High proĮle revitalisaƟon of college grounds Lead consultant managing concept, design and construcƟon of landscape Compliance with the Disability DiscriminaƟon Act and University restricƟons and Ɵmetables

A well known landmark within the University of Queensland, Union College is the university’s largest residenƟal college. The coeducaƟonal insƟtuƟon has housed students since the mid-60’s in buildings which have been heritage-listed for their social, cultural and architectural signiĮcance. As lead consultant presented with the task of creaƟng a fresh look for the landscape surrounding the College, JFP’s Įrst step was to creaƟvely assess how best to work with the exisƟng environment. This involved understanding the sites heritage and its former use as the university forestry site; which explained some of the signiĮcant vegetaƟon found on the college grounds. The Įnal design also had to pass the precise requirements of both the Union College Board and the University of Queensland Senate. The outcome of JFP’s educated approach to the design of the College landscape could be described as a seamless union between the new and the old on the site. JFP’s design sought to deinsƟtuƟonalise the College’s landscape by balancing light-weight materials that create a sense of openness against personal spaces created through the use of nooks, decks and plaƞorms. The new landscape appears to blend in with the exisƟng buildings to create an accessible place within which students can comfortably study, rest and play.

“JFP designed a modern, aesthetically pleasing and functional area for use by residents and visitors to Union College. JFP’s Project Management style was client focused and responsive to the operational needs of a community residential college..... The College is excited by what JFP has created.” - Jill Hewitt (Head of College)

Large mulƟ-purpose Public Plaza Comfortable, sub-tropical central hub Design and research of Brisbane’s largest greenroof IntegraƟon of a Heritage Listed landmark Custom furniture and planter design Project Partner: Cox Rayner Architects

The Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark is an extensive, master planned, mixed use development, with the heritage listed and predominant Brisbane landmark, The Gasometer, at its centre. The FKP Gasworks precinct is part of Newstead Riverpark Development of riverfront land that was once a series of yards, stores, pipelines and storage devices associated with gas supply. It was a fragmented place that was dissected by access roads, rail lines and the main drainage line. JFP’s role in the development is to design one cohesive space, while sƟll providing for the various diverse precincts envisioned for the development. Precincts include retail, commercial, bars and restaurants, as well as a very unique public plaza set around and within the structure of the Gasometer itself. JFP has also been involved in the research and design of a large green roof, including ‘beach’ pool, to service the large residenƟal tower that overlooks the commercial and retail precinct below. JFP’s vision for the space is based on creaƟng a comfortable, subtropical place of renewable experiences rich in detail, choice and variety; while sƟll integraƟng the play, permeability and legibility of a public space. Much emphasis has been put on oīering the excitement of discovery by telling the stories of the Gasworks in the subtle detail of lighƟng, pavements, seaƟng and material selecƟon.

experiiencees rich in detail, ch hoice and variety...

JFP’s role involved the research, design and documentation of the large green roof to the precinct which will be one of the largest of its type in Brisbane and Australia. Through close coordination with project architects, Cox Rayner, the green roof and associated recreational amenities will provide a distinct residential experience for Brisbane.

The Gasometer Plaza is the subtropical heart of the wider Gasworks Precinct at Newstead Riverpark. While the surrounding development focuses on commercial, retail and residential uses, the Plaza will provide a vibrant public realm that will act as a central hub of entertainment &recreation.

The Ipswich Waterside Parks Project involved two Ňood aīected parks; Joseph Brady Park & Riverside Park, located along the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers, in Karalee, Ipswich. AŌer the 2011 Ňoods, Ipswich City Council required a team of Landscape Architects, Landscape Contractors and technical subconsultants to redesign and re-construct the baƩered parks, which had previously been popular public spaces. JFP/Dig It Landscape’s proposal included redesign of carpark and access to both parks, open space, gathering spaces and a large intergrated playground area in Joseph Brady Park. The main aim of the design was to re-establish the parks as important recreaƟonal spaces for the community, while also improving resilience for future Ňood events. The bank stabilisaƟon and revegetaƟon of banks that were washed away during the 2011 Ňoods aims to secure the bank in a way that will reduce the impacts of a future Ňood. Working with and coordinaƟng with a number of subconsultants, which included JFP’s own Engineers, Planners and Surveyors, JFP’s Landscape Architects were able to create park systems that are userfriendly, inviƟng and which will ulƟmately provide valuable open space opportuniƟes for the community.

Brown Įeld redevelopment of a former industrial site Worked in tandem with Ellivo Architects to provide Development Assessment and Landscape Architecture perspecƟves Achieved residenƟal yield in excess of normal planning scheme constraints

JFP’s Planners and Landscape Architects worked as part of a small project team, in tandem with Ellivo Architects, to prepare a high quality development proposal for lodgement and approval by Brisbane City Council. The locaƟon of the site, being close to Oxford St in the trendy Brisbane suburb of Bulimba, lent itself to a development density in excess of the nominated City Plan requirements. Working with the project architects and the client, a design was prepared which maximised the height and bulk achievable on the site. This was done acknowledging the seƫng of the site and character of the area. The high quality nature of the design combined with input from JFP’s Planners enabled Council to support the proposal in a Ɵmely and eĸcient manner exceeding the Client’s expectaƟons. The project reinforced JFP’s ability to work in combinaƟon with high quality architects to revitalise an inner city “brown Įeld” site; enhancing the immediate streetscape and the residenƟal amenity of the area as a whole.

Appointed as internaƟonal design consultant advising on the high proĮle project; located between the naƟonal capital and a popular tourist town. Provided Urban Design and Landscape Concepts for the project

JFP was appointed as the internaƟonal design consultant for urban and landscape design on the Pink City Expressway Project in India. The 225km expressway connects the naƟonal capital, Delhi, to the popular tourist city of Jaipur; the capital of Rajasthan State. JFP’s assignment was to provide concepts relaƟng to the urban and landscape design of the Expressway that would mark the project as being world-class. JFP’s design creaƟvely balanced the Client’s desire for a worldclass road environment, which would encourage new travellers to use the Expressway, against the needs of the high volumes of freight traĸc, which currently uƟlise the exisƟng highway. Modern interpretaƟons of intricate paƩerns and styles inspired by tradiƟonal Rajasthani architecture and handicraŌs were creaƟvely and precisely incorporated into the wide variety of landscape features designed for the Expressway. JFP’s involvement with the Pink City Expressway Project expanded its experience in designing urban landscapes associated with expressways and also provided valuable experience and business connecƟons within India.

Situated in the heart of the buzzing Taringa SCIP precinct, the development at Harry’s Road will become a premium inner city address for both residents and businesses alike. Making the most out of the close proximity to transit hubs, such as Taringa Train StaƟon and the popular bus routes adjacent to the property, the development will encourage the use of public transport by incorporaƟng passive surveillance techniques and buīering to ensure both residents and the public are safe and comfortable. The spacious communal recreaƟon areas will be landscaped to create a lush, subtropical environment with many opportuniƟes for deep planƟng to support feature trees and large shrubs. Due to the signiĮcant slope of the site, JFP’s Engineers and Landscape Architects had to devise creaƟve ways of treaƟng the sites stormwater and whilst not reducing the potenƟal of the site. Water sensiƟve urban design (WSUD) principles helped to achieve this. Working with Ellivo Architects, the development has been designed to achieve the most return from the great posiƟon, while sƟll keeping valuable views and acƟvaƟng the street frontages. The Harry’s Road development also provides substanƟally improved access to Taringa Railway StaƟon through new path systems built with the new streetscape.

Located adjacent to Melaleuca wetlands and with signiĮcant vegetaƟon exisƟng on site, the Noosa Northrise Development required intense coordinaƟon between JFP’s various disciplines to create a high quality estate which respected the areas ecology. For example, collaboraƟon between JFP’s Engineers and Landscape Architects created an eĸcient road design which also allowed for vegetaƟon retenƟon. Due to sensiƟve receiving waters nearby, Water SensiƟve Urban Design features suggested by JFP’s Engineers were creaƟvely incorporated by JFP’s Urban Designers into the plan for the site. Earthworks on the project were creaƟvely balanced between the need to win Įll material to minimise construcƟon costs against minimising excavaƟon works to retain vegetaƟon. Also, aƩenƟon to detail was required to manage the extensive demoliƟon works required at the commencement of construcƟon, and in the management of hazardous material which existed on site. The Noosa Northrise Project is proof that JFP possesses the skills required to provide integrated urban consulƟng services to achieve high quality outcomes in environmentally sensiƟve locaƟons. The project also provided JFP with experience in parƟcipaƟng in public consultaƟon processes which inŇuenced the design for the environmentally sensiƟve site.

DISCIPLINES HIGHLIGHTS

High level open space amenity focussed on three constructed lakes at the centre of the development along a major channel IntegraƟon of Aged Care Precinct within large residenƟal estate

This Central Queensland estate is a prime example of eīecƟve Water SensiƟve Urban Design (WSUD). The major design features for the estate are a set of lakes and wetlands located centrally. The lakes provide a number of funcƟons including stormwater management, stormwater quality improvement and visual amenity. By devising an integrated design for the lakes in-house, JFP ensured that construcƟon of the lake system would proceed smoothly and that the lakes would both funcƟon eīecƟvely while having a high quality aestheƟc appearance. JFP’s creaƟve and integrated approach to the design of the estate resulted in both economic and markeƟng beneĮts for the Client. For example, the Client had originally proposed a bridge to cross the creek at the access point to the site. Working in tandem, JFP’s Landscape Architects and Engineers creaƟvely suggested a mulƟ-cell culvert crossing; this opƟon was signiĮcantly more cost eīecƟve yet it also delivered higher level aestheƟc qualiƟes. JFP’s focus on precision was also important for this project, parƟcularly in relaƟon to devising a recirculaƟon system to keep the complex lake system alive and thriving. The Pioneer Lakes Estate further reĮned JFP’s capability to design and produce a complex lake system as the focus for a major urban development. The project also included a signiĮcant Aged Care Facility for which JFP provided urban consulƟng services.

MuƟple recreaƟon spaces with varying requirements Proposed mulƟ aged playgrounds Themed playground including custom designed furniture Designed to be completed in stages as funding becomes available

Toowoomba Regional Council comissioned JFP to complete a Masterplan over the exisƟng Glenvale Park located in Toowoomba. While the park was well used by local residents, Council required a Masterplan that would create an exciƟng desƟnaƟon park for the wider community. Many of the exisƟng faciliƟes within the park were upgraded or improved as part of the revitalisaƟon project. The new playground proposed by JFP was designed to incorporate mulƟ-aged playground equipment with varying play experiences. Elements of the playground, including park furniture, have been custom designed by JFP to reŇect Toowoomba’s cycling heritage and the surrounding sporƟng faciliƟes. New path systems have been designed to encourage acƟve use of the park and to improve accessibility to both new and exisƟng faciliƟes. These pathways meander through exisƟng and proposed vegetaƟon, providing passive recreaƟon opportuniƟes. As part of the masterplan, JFP has to design for the future uses of the park, including an anƟcipated higher number of users. This required an extension and upgrade of exisƟng carpark faciliƟes, as well as providing improved ammeniƟes such as BBQs and shelters, to support these larger user groups.
