Getting Down to Business

The Caribbean not only offers captivating islands for leisure pursuits, it also provides a host of excellent facilities for business travel and corporate gatherings. This region can be easily reached from North and South America, Europe and Africa. There are numerous direct flights, enabling business delegates from around the world to easily jet in for events. Some islands can be reached by regional flights and, in some cases, ferry routes. Most of the islands have their own currencies, but accept US Dollars – prices are regularly quoted in this currency. The Caribbean islands are famous for their relaxed way of life, but their charm and welcoming nature also encourage many international business seminars, meetings and incentives trips. With glamorous tropical backdrops, the islands provide first‐class hotels, excellent infrastructure and modern conferencing facilities. The largest

of these facilities are concentrated on the islands of The Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Martinique and Puerto Rico. Some conference centres are attached to well‐established hotels, thus making it easy to manage business events and delegate accommodation in one place. Alternatively, smaller business gatherings can be fully hosted at boutique hotels or on tiny, remote island resorts. Whether the occasion is a large conference for international business leaders, a series of commercial meetings and seminars, or a small group on a corporate incentive trip, the Caribbean has an excellent reputation of being the destination for such events. The Caribbean is a diverse region, and much of the different destinations’ heritage influences their culture and way of life today. For French flair, sophisticated hotels, upmarket restaurants and designer boutiques, the French‐speaking islands of Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique and Saint Martin offer the best of France within a tropical landscape. The colonial history of the Spanish Caribbean lives today through the islands’ architecture, language, music and dance. These islands include Belize, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Dutch‐speaking islands of the Caribbean are unique in their Dutch heritage combined with modern American culture. The islands of St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Bonaire and Curacao offer casino resorts, tropical beaches, excellent diving opportunities and distinctive Dutch‐style architecture to visitors. St Maarten, shared with French territory Saint Martin, is the smallest island in the world.


The Caribbean’s diversity extends to the English‐speaking islands; the largest group in the Caribbean ‐ they stretch from the Gulf of Mexico down to the northern coast of Venezuela. These islands have had links with Great Britain for hundreds of years, and include the British and US Virgin Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Jamaica. Some islands, including Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Montserrat, are still British Overseas Territories, and will offer an air of familiarity to British travellers. Islands in the north of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands can be reached by direct flights from the UK. The Bahamas, an archipelago of islands just off the coast of Florida, offer sophisticated casino resorts on Nassau and Grand Bahama Island, while Jamaica’s rugged interior provides many adventure and outdoor activities for business delegates in pursuit of action away from the conference room. English‐speaking islands in the east of the Caribbean include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and the US Virgin Islands. Anguilla’s superb beaches provide a breathtaking backdrop to any business event held at its luxury hotels and villas. Getting there Currently, there are no direct international flights to Anguilla. However, from the United Kingdom ‐ British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all have excellent services into Antigua and St. Kitts with onward connections to Anguilla. Inter island airlines are: LIAT and charter airline operators offer services to all Caribbean islands and the USA. Connecting services fly from St Maarten (just seven minutes by air), which is served by Air France via Paris,

KLM via Amsterdam, plus Jet Blue, American Airlines and Continental via New York and other US gateways. Flights are also available from Puerto Rico (one hour by air), which is served by several US and inter‐island carriers.

Ferries begin operation at 7:30am and run regularly at 30‐45 minute intervals up until 7:00pm from Marigot, St. Martin. The last ferry of the day from Anguilla leaves Blowing Point at 6:15pm. The crossing is about 20 minutes. Private ferries are also available. Fares vary with providers. Charter service is also available from Blowing Point to the Princess Juliana Airport and Simpson Bay.

Airport: Clayton J. Lloyd Airport is situated on the immediate outskirts of The Valley, the island’s main administrative and commercial centre. The runway is 5,440 feet and can accommodate small to medium size aircraft including the Dash 8, Super ATR 72, and most corporate jets. A locally owned licensed fixed base operation, service is available providing aircraft refueling, ground handling and full concierge services.

Departure Tax: A US $20 departure tax applies to all tourists departing from Anguilla, via the airport. There is no charge for children under twelve years old. The departure tax for day trips to surrounding islands is US $5 for trips through Blowing Point Ferry Terminal ONLY. Residents of Anguilla and residents of St. Martin/St. Maarten are also subject to a US $5 departure tax through Blowing Point Ferry Terminal.

Hot Activities A variety of activities are available to Antigua and Barbuda visitors. Jumpstart the creative process, with adventure‐ seeking and team‐building activities that include swimming with stingrays, kayaking, zipping through rainforests, cricket, sailing, golfing, clay pigeon shooting or dining out. Antiguans and Barbudans are cricket‐ lovers and the country has produced four of the greatest West Indies Test cricket players. Antigua’s Nelson’s Dockyard, is the perfect base for those who enjoy sailing or would like to learn to sail with any of the island’s qualified sailing instructors. In April, the harbours surrounding Nelson’s Dockyard, fill with the yachts and sailboats of some of the world’s greatest sailors and sport enthusiasts who journey to the destination for one of its many yacht regattas including the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, and the Antigua Sailing Week. Food aficionados visit the historic Nelson’s Dockyard on a Friday night for Seafood Fridays; one of Antigua’s best kept secrets. With dining taking place outdoors, the vibe is relaxed and laid‐ back and is the perfect opportunity for group bonding. Festivals and Events No matter the time of year, there’s always something happening in Antigua

and Barbuda. Known as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, Antigua’s yachting calendar runs from December through to April, and culminates with the premier sailing regatta in the Caribbean, The Antigua Sailing Week. From July – August, Antigua hosts its annual Carnival, a ten day summer festival where masqueraders in colourful costumes parade through the streets in the capital city of St. John’s. Sport fishing tournaments, triathlons, literary festivals and outdoor food fairs are other great events visitors can experience in Antigua and Barbuda, throughout the year.

Diving paradise Bonaire is mainly known as a divers’ paradise. The island has 87 official dive sites, 54 of which are accessible from the

Martinique is a small island and a seductive little corner of France, which combines all the elements of stylish French savoir‐faire with a sensuous and fun‐loving Creole joie de vivre. The north is a rugged, mountainous region whose highest point is Mount Pelée, an active volcano that stands at 1397m. Just to the south is a range called the Pitons du Carbet, whose peaks reach an impressive 1197m. All these mountains are swathed in rainforest, dense tangles of oversized trees, creepers and bracken fern cut through by brooks, springs, and waterfalls. The

north also boasts beaches with sand that’s silver or bluish‐grey, a sign of their volcanic origins. The centre of the island is dominated by an alluvial plain. It’s in the centre that you will find Martinique’s largest costal swamps of mangrove trees. The roots of these trees aren’t underground, but out in the open air, arching over the swamp waters. That’s why mangrove swamps are sometimes called “forests taking a foot bath.”

The activities range from freedom hike, freedom run, exhibitions, lectures, church service, dinner, pub crawl; and on St. Patrick’s Day itself a traditional “Slave Feast” which is housed in a recreated slave village. This is a truly festive atmosphere with traditional foods, local entertainment and the wearing of green and white. In addition to this event are many other activities that take place throughout the year such as the Calabash Festival in July, Cudjoe Head Day Celebrations in August, Literary Festival in October/November, the Volcano Half Marathon in November and the Year End Festival in December. Montserrat celebrated fifty (50) years of festival from December 14 2012 to January 2 2013. This event saw a large number of returning residents and first time visitors to the island who participated in the many activities.

A visit to the island today will reveal a new beginning following the many disruptions caused by the volcano. Commerce is now centred in Brades in the northern part of the island. Businesses and homes are being built almost non‐stop. The road network has been improved with ghaut replacements, underground cable ducting, pedestrian walkway extensions, and resurfacing of main roads. Just recently, the Government of Montserrat has started a project to search for geothermal energy. A concept for a new town which includes Port Facilities at Carrs Bay, construction of a hotel and a business/residential centre around Little Bay has been finalised and will be built in phases. Montserrat has a good mix of Conference and Meeting rooms ranging from small spaces, found at different locations around the island accommodating 15 people or less, to medium sized rooms as at the Cultural

The written history of Nevis begins with the account recorded by Columbus when he sailed by Nevis in 1493. The name Nevis is derived from “Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves” which means “Our Lady of the Snows,” because of the cloud capped mountain reminding Columbus of snow. Prior to the Columbus saga, Nevis was named Dulcina “Sweet Island” by the Arawaks and later Oualie “land of beautiful waters” by the Caribs. Later in the 18th century Nevis became known as “Queen of the Caribees.” Evidence of pre‐ceramic people includes finely crafted stone tools and intricately coloured pottery found at various sites across the island. Over the years Nevis has made a number of significant contributions to the Caribbean and the World. Two men who

played part in international history were Alexander Hamilton and Lord Horatio Nelson. Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States and its first Secretary of the Treasury was born on Nevis on January 11, 1757. Nelson, Britain’s most famous admiral, used Nevis as a base of operations in the mid 1780s and married a Nevisian; Frances Nisbet in 1787. Nevis continued to be part of the British colonial holdings until 1967 when it achieved Associated Statehood with St. Kitts. On September 19, 1983 Nevis became part of an independent nation and formed part of the sovereign democratic state of St.Christopher and Nevis. Credit Cards Most hotels, restaurants, and businesses accept credit cards, but it is best to check ahead before relying on just credit cards. Bank ATM machines will give EC funds through some credit cards.

All visitors must present a passport. Visitors may stay for a maximum of six months, but extensions may be requested at the immigration office in Charlestown. The locals refer to this 11.8 square‐mile island in the Dutch Caribbean as Statia. Though small, the island reveals a surprisingly rich past to travellers. During the 1700s, Statia’s capital, Oranjestad, was a trading hub for slaves, sugar, cotton and commodities from Europe and the Far East. At its peak, the island’s population reached 18,000, and Oranjestad was perhaps the richest port in all the region. However, in 1776 the government brought the wrath of England upon the tiny nation after recognising the newly independent United States by firing an 11‐gun salute to a passing warship. The decline began, and today the sleepy island has approximitely 4,000 inhabitants.

More than 100 sunken trading ships off the shores of Statia make this a diving mecca; submerged anchors, cannons and pottery shards create a silent testimony to the island’s story. However there are things to do above the water too: visitors can take a half‐ day hike to the (600m) 2,000 foot Quill, a classically shaped volcano with a forest‐filled crater. Orchids, fruit trees and ferns thrive in this unique environment.

Ash Wednesday with the death of the Carnival King, King Vaval as the climax.
