WHERE else in the world can couples marry under the waves with just brightly-coloured fish for company; pledge undying loyalty whilst barefoot on a deserted pristine white-sand beach; say ‘I do’ deep in a lush rainforest surrounded by tropical flowers; or promise to honour, love and obey surrounded by the beautiful ruins of a former hermitage building? It’s no wonder that the Caribbean considers itself to be the romantic capital of the world, a reputation that draws couples looking for the wedding of their dreams followed by a honeymoon made in heaven.
Take advantage of the lush surroundings of several Caribbean outposts with a ceremony in botanical gardens. There are several across the Caribbean and some, such as the Botanical Gardens in Nassau, Bahamas and the St. Vincent Botanical Gardens (claimed to be the oldest in the Western Hemisphere) can hold wedding ceremonies. In Barbados, get spliced whilst surrounded by thousands of beautiful exotic blooms at Orchid World, or in Guyana team up for life in the heart of the rainforest at Shanklands Rainforest Resort.

Away from it all
Atmospheric & stratospheric
Larger villas such as Cerulean and Temenos on Anguilla, offer the perfect combination of exclusivity and luxury with a team of staff to meet the couple’s every whim.
Get wed at Shirley Heights on Antigua, a former hilltop lookout dating from colonial times, with one of the most breathtaking views in the Caribbean. It overlooks the picturesque English and Falmouth harbours and on clear days the islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat can be clearly seen away in the distance.
There are plenty of plush villas to choose from on other islands such as the Villas at Stonehaven on Tobago.
Or there’s the picturesque ruin, The Hermitage on tiny Cat Island in The Bahamas, which at 206 ft high is set on the highest point in the archipelago with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby Nassau enables couples to take their vows amid the ancient columns of a 14th century Augustinian cloister shipped from Lourdes in the 1920s, with beautiful views over the harbour.
Alternatively couples can marry at local beauty spot Pigeon Point on Saint Lucia and even time their nuptials to coincide with the popular annual Jazz Festival each May. Then there are historic plantation houses such as Sunbury Great House on Barbados or the La Dauphine Estate on Saint Lucia.

Other villas can be rented on islands such as Grand Cayman, Barbados, Saint Lucia, the British Virgin Islands and Grenada, where couples can tie the knot. Lovebirds wanting to push the boat out can even hire Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.
On the sister islands of St. Kitts and Nevis several picturesque boutique-style hotels have been built in the grounds of former sugar plantations whose ruined sugar mills make for beautiful wedding locations – as do the historic forts dotted across the islands, notably Brimstone Hill Fortress on St. Kitts.

Caribbean Wedding & Honeymoon Guide
Tradition with a twist For couples wanting a more traditional service, the Caribbean can offer any number of religious styles and creeds. Some of the traditional Anglican churches on islands such as Barbados, Antigua and Jamaica are just like ones you would find in a typical English village.
Aquatic Marry above the waves or beneath them. Couples wanting to stay dry can choose from boats of all types, from yachts to party-boats or even on the seabed in an Atlantis submarine in Barbados or Grand Cayman. As a more rustic alternative, exchange vows while floating through the forest on a river rafting trip in Jamaica. Those who don’t mind getting wet can wed under the sea in Grand Cayman where conch shells mark the watery aisle and an old anchor serves as the altar, or among dolphins in The Bahamas, who will present the rings to the couple after the vows are exchanged.
Enjoy the sight and the sounds of rushing water for nuptials by picturesque Caribbean waterfalls. Jamaica has several to choose from, including the famous Dunn’s River Falls, as do both Grenada and Saint Lucia.
Getting beached Beaches are where the Caribbean really leads the way. Choose from beaches of all shapes and sizes, on Antigua alone there are 365, one for every day of the year, with sands of different shades and hues from golden to dazzling white or romantic pink. Or why not try Morne Rouge Beach on Grenada or the romantic pink beach on Harbour Island in The Bahamas, which literally stretches for miles.
© Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority
Alternatively, there are historic Catholic churches dating back to the 15th century, while followers of the Jewish faith can marry at the Mikve Israel Emanuel Synagogue in Curaçao which was founded in 1732 or the Episcopal church in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands which is claimed to be the oldest Episcopal church in the whole Caribbean.
Then there are small intimate chapels on St. John in the US Virgin Islands as well as on various other islands.

Caribbean Wedding & Honeymoon Guide
Hotels & inns Virtually every Caribbean hotel can arrange weddings and some chains such as Sandals and Beaches Resorts, SuperClubs, Elite Island Resorts, Occidental, Couples Resorts and Rex Resorts have their own dedicated wedding co-ordinators to make the arrangements.
© Trinidad & Tobago Tourist Office
Smaller properties such as Coco Reef on Tobago, the Cotton House on Mustique,Young Island just off St. Vincent and Hermitage Bay on Antigua offer more intimate ceremonies where couples may be the only ones to marry during that day, that week or even that month.
© Curaçao Tourist Board
Some of the larger hotel groups offer free weddings. Most couples tend to marry in the grounds or on the beach and larger resorts have a limit on the number of weddings that will be held on one day.

TOP TIPS Unique Island Ceremony: For couples wanting to embrace their island location and add that special touch to their ceremony, the ‘Unity Of The Sands Ceremony’ provides a truly authentic experience. White sand from Antigua and pink sand from Barbuda is poured by the bride and the groom symbolising unity and the newly formed union. Make sure to also utilise tropical flowers native to Antigua and Barbuda, to capture the island’s vibes. Capitalise on the Historic Appeal: Throughout both islands, relics of the past mix with reminders of the present, making this an ideal location to stage an original wedding ceremony. Pick one of the romantic historical sites at Nelson’s Dockyard, Shirley Heights, Betty’s Hope or Fort James in Antigua, to make your wedding photos truly stand out.
Turquoise waters, picturesque views and laid-back charm are among the reasons why Antigua and Barbuda is the 2013 Caribbean’s leading Honeymoon destination. This tropical paradise is made for romantic weddings and honeymoons. Getting Married here is easy! And, as you'd expect, you can choose from a whole range of options, from barefoot on the beach to classical in the cathedral.
Take the leap of faith at the Antigua Rainforest Canopy tour; head off by boat, for moonlight turtle-watching tours; charter a yacht for your own private picnic; go diving with the stingrays; shopping through historic Redcliffe Quay; exploring Nelson’s Dockyard, the only functioning Georgian naval dockyard in the world or Barbuda’s Frigate Bird Sanctuary, the largest in the Western hemisphere.

Hot spot to watch: Still one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, Antigua’s sister island Barbuda offers ultimate privacy, and relaxation With a population of approximately 1500, this island and its beaches are never overcrowded. Honeymooners are likely to find they have Barbuda’s trademark 17 mile pink sand beach completely to themselves. TOP TIPS Make sure that you know the wedding rules of the destination long before travel. Choose your wedding attire to suit your desired destination and time of day as the island is warm and could get up to 30 – 31 degrees centigrade at mid-day. When choosing your dates be mindful of the season (rainy/dry) and the length of sunshine hours especially if you’re seeking the perfect romantic sunset setting (summer/winter). Discuss with your photographer the type and style of photos you require for your special occasion as you will want to capture memories to last a lifetime. Give your invited guest enough notice and information on your chosen destination. With miles of sun-drenched sands graced by towering palms, turquoise waters and a warm temperate climate, Barbados is easily a lovers’ paradise. Barbados infuses romance into every inch of the island from its dramatic scenery to its fabulous and intimate dining, glorious sunsets and colourful nightlife. Top properties: Sandy Lane, The House, Colony Club, Treasure Beach Hotel, Cobblers Cove Hotel, The Sandpiper, Fairmont Royal Pavilion, Mango Bay Hotel, Sandals Barbados. Hot spots to watch: SoCo Hotel for being boutique and very chic, Treasure Beach Hotel for its innovative offers and The House. Landscape: The landscape is relatively flat, composed mainly of coral with the peak of Mount Hillaby in the east. An almost continuous beach runs along the west coast.
Marriage Requirements: Couples can marry on the day of their arrival. Specialist wedding planners will organise everything from the licence to the cake and marriage ceremony, while most hotels and resorts also offer on-staff consultants. A Marriage Licence must be obtained in person from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Roman Catholic Church has additional requirements and fees to those listed. Contact the Bishop of Bridgetown for information. Residency Requirement: None. Documents Required: Essential documents including passport or birth certificate plus valid return tickets. Fees: Bds$200 cash plus Bds$25 stamp. Witnesses: Two people are required.
Activities: A diverse offering of attractions include Ariel Trek, Island Safari and Rum Tour (on land) to intriguing ship wrecks or swimming with turtles whilst on a catamaran cruise. Or simply experience one of Barbados’ festive events such as the Jazz Festival, Holders Season, Crop Over and Taste of Barbados.

TOP TIPS Walking on sunshine! A nice tan just before the wedding seems like a good idea, but forms a risk for clown-like (red nose) photos in the end. Please beware of the sun and use minimum of 30 SPF at all times. Melt down... If the wedding cake is going to be outside make sure it is made of sugar fondant because a creamy cake will melt in the sun. Happy feet: To keep yourself from sinking into the sand, you're going to need wedding shoes that have a solid or flat heel. Or better yet, go barefoot! TOP TIPS The biggest tip is to allow yourselves plenty of time to get all the legal formalities done. Haiti has many beautiful beaches which are totally isolated. Nearby hotels or guesthouses mean that you can have a unique wedding and honeymoon. Many hotels give a special discount for honeymooners. Flowers and cakes can be provided upon request. Troubadour groups and folklore dance groups can make your wedding a unique occasion. In most areas, the bride can come to the wedding in a decorated taxi boat. If you plan on having a formal wedding then you will need to bring your own dress/suit etc. But your hair and flowers/bouquet can be arranged in Haiti. A country of extraordinary beauty, rich history and tons of culture, The Republic of Haiti is the heart and soul of the Caribbean. Nestled on the western side of Hispaniola, this up-and-coming holiday hotspot is blessed with a unique personality and a tropical climate ideal for exotic outdoor adventure. Bursting with surprises around each corner, the people of Haiti welcome you to make yourself at home and share in their little piece of paradise. Celebrated for its’ exceptional beauty, Haiti’s pristine beaches, towering palm trees and mountainous landscapes beckon all to come out and play. Sun-worshippers have miles of unspoiled coastline to relax and catch some rays including the sandy shores of Ile a Vache, a small island on the south coast, which in 2013 was ranked one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. For those who desire more active pursuits, there are endless opportunities to enjoy the balmy Caribbean waters. Set off on a lively fishing expedition at sea, check out the brightly coloured fish while snorkelling along the reef, or explore eerie sunken wreckages while scuba diving. While Haiti’s natural beauty is plain for everyone to see, if you dig a little deeper you’ll see there’s much more to this country than sand and sun. A veritable treasure trove of historical significance, in 1804 Haiti became the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to gain independence. Caribbean Wedding & Honeymoon Guide

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path location, consider taking the plunge with an underwater ceremony on St. Croix, amidst the sugar mill ruins that punctuate the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John or in Blackbeard’s Castle, a medieval-style Skytsborg, on St. Thomas. The options are limitless!
Consistently ranked as one of the top Caribbean wedding and honeymoon destinations, the U.S. Virgin Islands is the perfect place to begin life as a married couple. TOP TIPS There are plenty of options to choose from while you are in Venezuela. It’s a country that is saturated with beaches, mountains, plains and natural wonders. Book a boat trip out to Angel Falls, one of the world’s highest waterfalls, or take a hike in the country’s Andes mountain range. Los Roques is an archipelago which makes for an interesting visit. Margarita is extraordinary There are few places that achieve to be called Heaven. Some people maintain that the secret of Margarita is the light that illuminates the island. Others believe the island’s location is the reason for its beauty. Many wonderful beaches would be enough, but the unspoiled region of Macanao and La Restinga, with its labyrinth of mangroves, add to its uniqueness. All found within short distances, the colonial past comes alive in Seventeenth Century fortresses and colourful churches, and all experienced in the lush vegetation of a tropical island. The Paradise of Los Roques The Los Roques archipelago was first known in 1529 by the Spanish explorers. From the air, the surface of the sea reveals extreme contrasts, of crystal lagoons, and white sandy cays. Imagine a tropical village, without cars, where you walk between picturesque inns and restaurants or boat to your own prívate island for a day of sun, Caribbean Wedding & Honeymoon Guide
