PJV officials visit Suffolk’s Real Time Crime Center BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM
Last week, Port Jefferson village officials took a trip out to Yaphank to take a look at the Suffolk County Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center. The village’s parking and mobility administrator, Kevin Wood, was joined out east by trustee Kathianne Snaden and chief of code enforcement, Fred Leute, where the team was updated by Stuart Cameron, chief of police department and acting commissioner. Wood said that Cameron gave a detailed report on the integration of Port Jefferson’s security caeras into the RTCC, and learned that the crime center has around 4,000 integrated cameras integrated. This network of cameras has been created to deter and solve crimes. “It was fantastic to be the first village on the Island to be hooked up to the Real Time Crime
Center,” Snaden said. “That partnership is invaluable, and our village is on the cutting edge of all technology when it comes to public safety. I’m happy to where we are and am proud of it.” According to Wood, back in May 2019, Village of Port Jefferson officials announced it become the first village on Long Island to connect through videography with the county’s RTCC. This allowed the police to tap into the eight village security cameras (at the time) positioned in places like the train station and the three-way intersection at West Broadway and Main Street. “The technology is growing, and getting better and better,” Wood said. “I thought it was important to bring Kathianne and chief along — who have never been there before — to catch up to see where they’re at and where we’re going with it.” These cameras were instrumental in capturing the murder of David Bliss Jr., of Shirley, in March, which led to an arrest just 72 hours after the incident.

New school mask guidelines cause confusion BY JULIANNE MOSHER & KIMBERLY BROWN JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM
Parents, students and school districts had a confusing week with mask mandates for kids pre-K through 12 needing clarification from the governor. On Friday, June 4, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said an announcement was coming to drop in-school mask mandates for children. But shortly after, the state Department of Health’s announcement didn’t align with what he said. Health officials said they had not yet received an OK from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and on Monday, Cuomo announced the CDC would not be changing guidance for wearing masks, therefore they are still required inside schools. According to Cuomo, school districts can lift the requirement that students must wear masks outdoors. The state’s guidance on mask use indoors remains in place, but school districts may choose to no longer require masks outdoors, for example during recess. This change aligns with guidance relating to summer camps, where even unvaccinated campers are not required to wear masks outdoors. “Children wear masks in school inside, and when they’re outside of the school building in recess, etc., it’s hot, they’re running around, but they’re outside, there is no mandate for masks
outside. We’ll leave that up to the local school districts,” Cuomo said Monday. This came just days after rallies were hosted across Long Island, demanding that the governor “unmask our kids.” Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-NY1) and upset parents gathered Wednesday, June 2, outside the H. Lee Dennison building in Hauppauge to demand a mask-free environment for children in schools and camps. “This is the right decision for children across New York, who have sacrificed so much throughout the pandemic and suffered emotionally, physically and mentally from lockdowns and remote learning,” Zeldin said at the rally. The week before, May 26, Andrew Giuliani (R) — another contender for Cuomo’s seat in 2022 and son of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) — stopped by the same spot to show his support for the same cause. These rallies were put together by parents and advocacy groups who hoped to influence Cuomo’s decision to lift the mandate. “It’s a parent’s right to take care of their children the best way they feel fit,” said Mike Hathaway from Long Island Loud Majority, a conservative organization. “Not the government, not for political pull, and not for control.” Moms for Liberty, an advocacy group from Suffolk County that focuses on unifying

America while educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights, has been working to get the mask mandate lifted in New York. A member of the group, Barbara Abboud, said her children, among many others, have been suffering in school, whether that be academic, mental or physical. “Everyone here today knows what’s at stake,” she said. “It’s more than just unmasking our children, it’s about getting our basic freedoms back.”
Zeldin also discussed his animosity with the prior COVID-19 restrictions, where businesses were forced to close at earlier hours to prevent the spread of the virus. “There was a time when they said you couldn’t go to the gym after 10 [p.m.] because, apparently, that spreads COVID,” Zeldin said. “However, if you go at 8:30 with a whole group of people, that would mitigate the spread.” Cuomo said virtually all restrictions can be lifted once 70% of New Yorkers aged 18 and older have received the first dose of the vaccine.
Community comes out to support Hahn’s run for Congress BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM More than 150 people, celebrating a local elected official’s announcement, filled the front courtyard of the Three Village Inn, Stony Brook, in the late afternoon of June 2. Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) announced her bid to run in 2022 for New York’s 1st Congressional District. Hahn, who is also deputy presiding officer of the county Legislature, will run against fellow Suffolk Legislator Bridget Fleming (D-Noyac) for the Democratic nomination. U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R) has held the seat since 2015. The congressman is currently campaigning for the Republican nomination for New York State governor in 2022. The June 2 event was organized for Hahn to make her first public remarks about her decision. When she was younger, the legislator was a waitress at the Three Village Inn. Hahn said her father, who was a volunteer firefighter in Stony Brook, gave her inspiration to serve the community. “I always try to match the level of service my dad gave,” Hahn said. “He is my hero, and my prime example of what it means to show up for your community and help families in need. It’s his example that led me to pursue a career in
social work and become a civic leader.” She said his influence also helped her tackle difficult issues in the Legislature where she has worked on legislation to protect land and water from pollutants, confront Long Island’s opioid epidemic, and helped victims of domestic abuse. Hahn said more than ever the district needs a leader in Congress, “who actually wants to find solutions for our problems, and that is what I will do — find solutions.” “I have so much hope and optimism right now,” she added. “We are back together close enough for handshakes and hugs.” Hahn compared the pandemic to a storm, and said like other storms, residents will come out stronger “if we are willing to face head on together the enormous challenges that need to be tackled for Long Island’s hardworking families.” The legislator said she recognizes the impact the pandemic has had financially on many. She added Long Islanders’ finances were affected long before the COVID-19 shutdowns when the federal government capped the state and local tax deduction. “This punitive tax has hurt families and hurt our economy,” she said. “Of course, I’ll stand up for Long Island homeowners and vote to repeal that tax.” In addition to removing the tax cap on

SALT deductions, among her goals, if elected to Congress, are making health care affordable, child care more accessible, investing in local infrastructure and protecting land and water from pollution and having access to parks and shorelines. “Washington must be better for us,” she said. Hahn said she believes a campaign can be built with Long Islanders across the political spectrum “while upholding deep-held Democratic values of respect, equality, justice and opportunity for all.” She made it clear she is ready for the task of running for Congress and described herself as a problem solver.
“I work to get things done,” Hahn said. “I lead with respect, and I listen. I have a track record of working with anyone, to put family first and get results. That’s the kind of leadership our community needs in Washington. This campaign isn’t going to be easy, but like a lot of Long Islanders, I’ve never backed down from a challenge.” Nancy Goroff, who challenged Zeldin in 2020, was at the event. In an email to her supporters earlier this week, the former Congressional candidate endorsed Hahn. “Kara is a leader who is deeply connected to this community and understands the problems families here face,” Goroff said. “As our county legislator, she has tackled tough and important challenges and has come up with creative, practical solutions.” Alexandra VanDerlofske, executive director of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee, said in an email statement that voters will have a difficult decision to make when it comes to the primaries. “Kara Hahn has been a dynamic legislator and has a proven record of getting things done for Suffolk,” she said. “Voters are going to have a tough choice to make, but either choice will be a good one as Kara or Bridget will both be strong advocates for Suffolk in Congress.”

Port Jefferson Village candidates debate Two trustee seats up for Belle Terre for upcoming election
BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM
BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM
For two hours on Tuesday night, dozens of people sat inside the Port Jefferson Village Center to watch the highly anticipated election debate, hosted by the League of Women Voters. Incumbents trustee Kathianne Snaden, trustee Stan Loucks and Mayor Margot Garant sat alongside Barbara Ransome and Suzanne Velazquez to answer questions from the audience surrounding village issues and how they will work toward them if elected. Two trustee seats are up, with the two incumbents and Velazquez vying for the spots. Ransome, the director of operations with the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and a past village trustee, is looking to take over Garant’s seat as mayor. After opening remarks, the first question up was regarding uptown revitalization. Garant said, “Everyone knows uptown is a very challenged business improvement district.” With a master plan in place, she and her team have helped initiate the start of building mixed-use spaces as of three months ago — bulldozing the vacant Bada Bing location to start construction with the Conifer Realty apartments. More plans are being implemented to continue the growth and revitalization of Upper Port, which will continue to take time and planning. Ransome added that during her tenure with the chamber, membership has increased by 50%. By working with landowners, landlords and closely with Stony Brook University, she said the village is a vital place to conduct business. “There has always been a line of communication to try to encourage businesses to come down into the village as well in Upper Port,” she said. The topic of cannabis became heated when all five participants had different views on smoking or ingesting the plant within the village. Garant noted that under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) legislation, cannabis can be ingested or smoked and for dispensaries to operate, but the village has until the end of the year to opt out. As of right now, Garant has not made a decision because she said it is a “tough decision.” “Cannabis dispensaries are clean and safe,” she said. “People will want to go to other places and purchase it and come back, but I think it might be an incentive for uptown redevelopment. So, I’ve not closed the door on this. I’d like to hear from my community before I make that kind of decision.” The village currently has a code which prohibits the use or smoking of tobacco or cannabis products on any village-owned property, which includes village parks but excludes the golf course at the country club. “We know when we’re on a golf course in the open space, some of the ladies and gentlemen like
the multitude of complaints that they received of criminal activity going on around the benches. “It’s not about selectivity,” she argued. “We do not discriminate as to who can sit and who can rest. We welcome everyone to this village, and we help them in any way that we can. We cannot have crime, we cannot have drug deals, we cannot have what was going on at the train station.” For public safety concerns, Loucks started off with how proud he was that the Suffolk County Police Department Whiskey Tour would be patrolling the village at night, afterhours. “They have a little bit more clout than our code officers,” he said. “Our code officers are somewhat restricted with what they can do but are always the first ones there.” Snaden, who throughout her two years as trustee has implemented several different policies for public safety including the “See Something — Say Something” campaign, as well as a new kiosk for code enforcement to be readily available during their tour. Ransome argued that when the officers are off duty is when trouble arrives, especially when the bars are let out. She said she would prefer officers to be touring during later hours. “I think that we need to change our shifts on our codes so that they are working in conjunction with Suffolk County,” she said. Snaden responded that she is working on making the now part-time officers full time. “So that would help with those hours, and for them to work closer with Suffolk County later hours into the evening,” she said. The LIPA power plant and water quality in the harbor were also discussed, with everyone equally acknowledging the importance fiscally of the plant and of renewable green energy. Loud music was asked about, and what the village can do to better control noise after dark, as well as political signs outside of businesses in the village. When the conversation about the Port Jefferson Country Club came up again, Loucks noted that as of that day, the club had 700 new members. “I believe the country club is the crown jewel,” he said. “If you’ve not gone up to the country club and walked around the facilities, you really don’t know what you’re missing.”
On Tuesday, June 15, Village of Belle Terre residents can vote in the election for two trustee positions. This year’s candidates are incumbent Richard Musto on the Citizens Party ballot, with newcomer Richard Harris. Incumbent Caroline Engelhardt is on the Residents Party ballot. Musto has been a resident of Belle Terre for over 30 years. Running for his third term, Musto said he brings 70-plus years of life experience to the table. “I have a strong interest in the village,” he said. “I want to keep it going — I enjoy living here.” Before his retirement, he spent two years of service in the Navy, with one year of sea duty and a second year at the Naval Air Station in San Diego, with a rank of lieutenant commander. After his residency at Downstate Medical Center, he joined a urology group in Port Jefferson in 1977 and remained there until 2014. Since then, he has been president of the medical staff at St. Charles Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center. Musto has been chief of urology at Mather Hospital, and a member of the board of trustees at Peconic Bay Medical Center for the last 15 years. Richard Harris is running for his first term as trustee and said he can bring 20 years of professional experience. “I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the village where I live,” he said. After moving to Belle Terre with his wife seven years ago, “We could not think of a better place to raise our family,” he said. He is the father of two school-aged boys. Harris said he has served as counsel to town and village boards, planning and zoning boards, conservation boards, public safety commissions, code enforcement and emergency management departments and agencies conducting internal affairs. Currently, he serves as Port Jefferson deputy village attorney and Belle Terre special prosecutor. Since moving to Belle Terre, he has served on the traffic safety committee, where he recommended traffic calming measures on Cliff Road, helped build a second kayak rack at Knapp Beach and served on the recently reconvened Marina Committee. If elected, he has a list of goals he plans to accomplish. “I know how to make government work for all residents,” he said. “I will use my expertise and my municipal and law enforcement contacts to improve traffic safety in the village, to address erosion and water runoff issues, add amenities to our village beaches, and examine options to fund and build a village marina.” Caroline Engelhardt has lived in her home in

to enjoy a smoke,” she said. “If we cannot enforce one type of tobacco, it’s difficult to enforce another type of tobacco. So, we’re looking to make it the policy of membership — when you join the country club to prohibit the use of cannabis as a policy when you become a member.” Ransome said that is called “privilege.” “It should be an even-lane regulation,” she added. Loucks believes there should be absolutely no use of cannabis anywhere within the village, while Snaden looked at the issue from both a financial and public safety point of view. “It could be an opportunity for our town,” she said. “There are tax implications there where we would receive tax revenue but, as the commissioner of public safety, I have a lot of concerns.” Velazquez, too, was concerned about the close vicinity of the middle and high schools, but also as a health care professional who acknowledges the positives medicinal marijuana could have on a person. Things got heated again when the discussion of bus shelters and the future of transportation came up. Garant said previously there were issues with graffiti and homeless people using the shelters as a home, along with the loss of the Stony Brook shuttle during COVID. However, she said the shuttle is coming back with the university sporting 50 percent of the bill. Snaden, who is also the liaison to the village parking and transportation departments, said that the bus will help continue to bring business back. “I think it’s very important for businesses to have students and staff and anybody else on that shuttle route come into the village to patronize the businesses and the restaurants without their vehicles,” she said. Velazquez agreed, but was upset by the lack of places for people to sit while they waited for their buses, and that Port Jefferson is the only train station on Long Island that has removed its benches. “I think that we should make sure that we have places for people to sit,” she said. “Seniors, the disabled or just people wanting to enjoy. I think we should have bus shelters and benches at the train station for everybody to use — not just select who should be allowed to rest.” Snaden rebutted, noting the reason benches were removed at the train station was because of

The long-awaited retaining wall at East Beach is finally done after a total makeover of the decaying former wall. Back in March, the project was awarded to Galvin Brothers and Madhue Contracting, both of Great Neck, as a joint venture for a total of $474,830. The expenses for the structural repairs were included in the budget and were part of a bond anticipation note. This came as part of the ongoing revitalization

According to Mayor Margot Garant, the wall was finished on time and as expected by Memorial Day weekend. “I think the community is really happy with it,” she said. “It’s important that we got this wall completed.” Garant said they are continuously keeping an eye on the wall and watching the upper slop to make sure everything stays in place. “When there was a monsoon [that weekend],” she said, “Everything stayed intact.”

Trailing Newfield 2-1 to open the 4th inning, Comsewogue loaded the bases when Christopher Valazquez laid off a pitch for the walk to plate Aaron Freidman to tie the score, but it was Dominic Schuch’s bat that spoke next for a base clearing inside the park grand slam homerun to jump out front for a 6-2 lead. But Newfield chipped away at the deficit loading the bases in the bottom of the 4th inning plating a runner when the batter was hit by a pitch then Mike Madina drove in Stephen
Lumme and Dylan Johnson. Newfield’s Joe Hackel scored on a passed ball in the bottom 6th inning to make it a one run game when Medina struck again with a 2 run rbi double to take a 10-9 lead to open the 7th inning. Newfield’s defense prevailed to close out the one run victory. With the win Newfield improves to 13-2 for the top spot in league III with 3 games left on their schedule while the loss drops Comsewogue to 7-8. Post season play begins Tuesday June 15.

Continued from A6 Ransome agreed, but argued about the senior citizen discount that was taken away, as well as allowing more walkers on the property. “I think we need to do a better job with our contract we have with our current vendor there, which is The Crest Group, because right now we’re only getting $20,000 a month from the rental of that facility, which is extraordinarily less than what happened when Lombardi’s was there,” she said. Loucks argued back that when the Lombardi

Engelhardt has served on several boards and volunteered with Doctors Without Borders. She is a teaching faculty member at Northwell/ Hofstra Medical School. Engelhardt did not respond to TBR News prior to press time. Residents can vote for two of these three candidates from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Community Center in Belle Terre. Group left, the space was empty. “No one wanted to go up there,” he said. “$20,000 per month goes directly to the village — the village residents pay absolutely no tax money to support the club. Zero. It is a selfsustaining country club.” Other topics included the marrying of Upper Port and downtown, planning committee critiques, the Gap store vacancy and its parking, also the continuous Lawrence Aviation impact and its future. To watch the whole debate online, visit the Village of Port Jefferson’s YouTube page. Residents can vote on Tuesday, June 15, at the Village Center at 101A E. Broadway between the hours of 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Correction: Last week’s article titled “Suffolk County Landbank works to find solutions for blighted Port Jeff Station property” incorrectly stated the land was owned by the federal government. We regret the error.

Editorial
We need impartiality and fairness in our Village Government I want to publicly support Dr. Suzanne Velazquez, LCSW, as village trustee because we need the professional social work skills that she brings to the position. Social work is about helping people by putting forth their collective voice into action. It’s about listening to their issues, challenges, and problems. It is always about trying to find solutions to make a difference in people’s lives. Dr. Velazquez is an ethical and
experienced social work professional who is committed to public service and is running for PJV Trustee to provide us a professional “ear” and “voice” for our concerns as village residents. I have worked under the competent leadership of Suzanne for over a decade. I’ve witnessed her ability to view issues from multiple perspectives in order to transform problematic circumstances into successful outcomes. She actively listens, collaborates, and effectively advocates
for needed changes. She utilizes a critical and systematic approach to think “outside the box” for resolutions that are fair, impartial, and in the best interest of the community. She leverages and manages resources for fiscal efficiency. It for these reasons that on June 15th I ask my fellow residents to vote “Row B” and elect Dr. Suzanne Velazquez for village trustee. Stephen Rabeno Port Jefferson
I have owned my restaurant now on Main Street for well over 20 years and anyone who knows me knows I’m passionate about my food and my service, but most of all my customers. I really want to thank Mayor Garant and the incumbent Unity Team because without their support and the initiatives that they took during the COVID pandemic, my business may not have survived those dark days to be open today. On the onset when we were totally closed, the Village took the initiative to eliminate parking on Main Street to provide for convenient and quick curbside pickup only. The mayor then started her own initiative called “Zooming with the Mayor.” She personally reached out and set up
Zoom interviews with business owners so they could connect with their patrons to tell them that they were open and explain how they were conducting business. For many, like myself, it was my first introduction to “Zooming,” and I was grateful that the mayor taught me this technology skill which would soon become a way of life and a necessary skill to surviving the pandemic. As the weather improved, the village was also very proactive and helped every single restaurant create an outdoor dining venue. In conjunction with the Business Improvement District, promotional ads were run on News 12 and other venues to let everyone know the village was safe, and open for business with outdoor dining and curbside pickup.
These initiatives helped my business and I’m sure many others to survive the long and difficult days of the COVID pandemic. I, for one, as a business owner and a resident, am grateful for the steady leadership of Mayor Garant and Trustees Loucks and Snaden. I support their reelection as they have supported us. We are not officially thru this pandemic and I believe we need the unwavering leadership of the incumbent Unity Party and their continued support to ensure the stability of our business district and our complete and total recovery from this pandemic as a village.
Whatever happened to just doing your job? What you were hired or elected to do, what your job description says? Why must over the top accolades be given out for just doing your job? Thanks and gratitude are important for service that goes certainly above and beyond what is expected, but for just doing your job? Accomplishments are part of the title or job, you signed up for. In 12 years, you better have accomplishments. It is your responsibility to execute activities that
reflect the well-being of our village. Praises, tributes are for exceptional, remarkable acts of work ethic. Getting the job done is what you are supposed to do! Do you reward narcissism? No, I think not. Anyone choosing to go into public service I would hope that they are passionate and sincere and want the best for their constituents and community, kind of goes without saying. I want to vote for someone who wasn’t “dragged” into running, who isn’t tired and “fried
to a crisp.” We need new energetic government. Let the incumbent retire graciously and move on, as what was promised, but did not happen. Change is good, term limitations are good, let’s move forward in this election and vote for Barbara Ransome for mayor and her teammate Suzanne Velazquez for trustee, June 15, PJ Village Center, hours 6-9 p.m. Mike Napoli Port Jefferson
I was watching the debate between the current trustees and mayor and their opponents last night on YouTube. I was stunned by the League of Woman Voters lack of preparation for this debate. I realize that these are volunteers, but if you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all. The debate started off with directions and times given for statements and questions, and right off the bat Ransome’ s opening statement — which was supposed to be two minutes — was cut off after one
minute and when she commented on that, nothing was done. The timekeeper was all over the place and while everyone was being pleasant to these volunteer senior citizens there was confusion among the candidates, league and attendees. Garant at one point had to say she didn’t understand the question and it was not clarified they just kept ongoing. The order of answering the questions seemed to always start at the ends of the line not giving candidates equal opportunities to be first to answer.
All through the evening the time keeping was inconsistent and a bell was rung at improper times causing the candidates to pause. The microphones were at times loud and sometimes too low, and Velazquez’s mic seemed to cut out. The facilitator seemed perplexed at times. For such an important night it seemed like a waste of time —too bad.

Andy vs. Lee in the mask game
The last week has been really confusing surrounding children wearing masks in schools and during recess. With under three weeks left of classes, parents across Long Island have been rallying outside the county offices, demanding that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) ends the mask mandates for little ones. But it became political, fast. We agree: Masks are annoying, and we can only imagine how it’s impacting children in schools emotionally and physically. The weather has been hot — field days and outdoor sports have been starting back up in high and humid temperatures. But public health is still a top priority. It should not be political. And while U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY1) and Andrew Giuliani (R) held the same exact rally, in the same exact spot just a week apart, something must have worked because Cuomo announced a change in the state mandate two days after Zeldin’s gathering. But then that changed because the state Department of Health said it isn’t time for kids to be maskless inside yet — outside they can. Parents were confused, upset — and rightfully so. Districts had to send out letters every other day updating what was allowed and what was not allowed. We’re all very tired. We want this to end. What we don’t want, though, is for things to happen prematurely. Is it better for the kids to spend the next few days with a mask on and then its summer break? Remember only people over 12 can be vaccinated, leaving many students in schools unvaccinated either because of age or their family’s choice. In this case we think patience is a virtue. It’s not completely over yet. Be safe and be smart.

ou don’t have to look hard to see them alongside the road. They aren’t even always on the sharpest curves or the steepest hills. There, along the median or over there, by the right side of the road, are the homemade crucifixes, the flowers, the stuffed animals and the personal effects of people who never made it wherever they were going, their lives ending on or near asphalt as other vehicles collided D. None with theirs. My family recently of the above took a road trip, where BY DANIEL DUNAIEF we easily could have become another statistic, and our family or friends could have just as easily been visiting the spot where it ended for one, two, three or all four of us. I was driving during a recent weekend, excited by the open road and eager to remove the family
from the neighborhood patterns that have defined our lives for well over a year. My wife navigated, checked her email, exchanged texts with friends, and regularly asked if I wanted her to drive, if I needed a drink, or if I was hungry. Our son was napping behind me, his head tilted back and to the left. Our daughter was immersed in virtual interactions with her friends, head down, a Mona Lisa smile plastered on her face. With my peripheral vision, I traced the flow of the taller and shorter trees that passed by, the familiarity of the Texas, Indiana, Ohio and California license plates on nearby cars and trucks, and the click, click, click of the road that churned beneath our wheels. Up ahead, the driver of one of the thousands of SUVs that dot the American landscape hit his brakes. My wife instantly saw it and closed her eyes. Unlike me, she typically hits her brakes as soon as she sees the red lights at the back of the car in front of her. I immediately take my foot off the accelerator, where it hovers over the brake. As we rapidly approached the car in front of us, I applied the brake with some force, coming to an almost
complete stop just feet before reaching the bumper. I exhaled in relief, while immediately hitting the hazards. I wanted the cars behind me to know I wasn’t merely touching my brakes, but that I, and all the other cars around me, were stopping. For a moment, I chatted with my wife. I have no idea what she or I was saying, when I noticed a truck coming towards at an incredible rate of speed. “Hold on! This isn’t good!” I shouted, waking my son and drawing my daughter away from her phone. I reflexively tapped my accelerator and drove my car directly towards the nearly stopped SUV on my right side. The truck, meanwhile, dove into the thin shoulder. As it flew by, the truck somehow missed us completely. The car next to me honked in frustration, as the driver, who must have moved to her right, glared. I wanted to tell her that a truck might have crushed our family if the driver and I hadn’t each made last second adjustments. Her lane kept moving, and she likely didn’t give my sudden maneuver another thought. With my hands in a vice grip on the wheel and my breathing rapid, I stared at the truck in front of me. I wasn’t
sure whether I would have liked to punch or hug the driver, who didn’t notice me slowing down, see my hazard lights or leave himself enough room to stop. At the same time, though, he — and it could have been a woman, because I never saw the driver — turned onto the small shoulder, finding just enough space to squeeze past me without destroying my car, my family or my life. For the next several minutes, I struggled to drive, as the image of the speeding truck with nowhere to go in my rear view mirror replayed itself in my head. “Are you okay? Do you need me to drive?” my wife asked anxiously. My family and I were okay. We weren’t a part of a sad story that ended on an American highway. Skid marks left on the road weren’t a marker for the final seconds of our lives. We are grateful for the combination of factors that turned a close call into a near miss. Perhaps this happened for a reason beyond giving us more opportunities to extend the journeys of our lives. Perhaps one of the purposes is to provide a warning to everyone else to remain vigilant, to brake early and to stay sharp and focused on the roads.
Ever heard of a white tick? Please read on

ere we go again. I have had another encounter with a tick, but this time, to make the story more interesting, the villain is a white tick. At least it can appear white when it is engorged with blood. My blood. Just the thought of it is enough to make one’s skin crawl, right? Well, it’s tick season particularly now, and you don’t have to go into the woods to find them. They can be in the beautiful lawn at your house or in the bushes that you brush against when you take out the garbage. Unless Between you are wearing long you and me pants that are tucked BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF into your socks and a long sleeve shirt and hat, you could be a victim.
More likely, your dog could appear to a tick as a delicious steak on four legs, and if bitten, the dog can inadvertently carry the tick into your home. I think the white tick found me as I was sitting on the cement edge of a pool and wearing just shorts and a short sleeve shirt in the recent 90-degree weather. (Chicken that I am, I found the water still too cold to jump in.) We all know that ticks can carry Lyme disease. But there are other diseases that could potentially be transmitted through their bite. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is another, and despite its geographical designation, this malady can occur throughout the United States and yes, even on Long Island. A local internist I know tells me he has seen several cases in the course of his practice. RSMF, as it is sometimes referred to, is a bacterial disease that typically begins with a fever and fierce headache. A few days later a rash develops, made up of small spots usually starting on the wrists and ankles. Other symptoms may

include muscle pains and vomiting. To my surprise, when I had routine blood work done for an annual check-up a couple of years ago, I discovered that I had indeed had RSMF from that previous tick bite but with no symptoms. Asymptomatic versions do indeed occur, and I was one such example. Now I have again been bitten, and the question is whether I could get the disease again, if the tick carried RSMF, or if I have antibodies sufficient enough to make me immune. Then again, I cannot be sure that this recent tick did not carry Lyme disease or some other microbial agent of infection. What to do? It never helps to have a medical problem on a weekend. I apparently was bitten on Saturday afternoon and found the tick behind my right knee on awakening Sunday morning. My hand was drawn to it because of a severe itch. At first, because it was small and white, we thought it was a skin tab that had spontaneously

appeared. But upon pulling, it came off and began crawling away. Since I had experience with a tick bite before, I knew to capture the tick in a plastic sandwich baggie and save for the physician to send for testing. As the day progressed, I could feel a tiny lump where I had been bitten, and the area around the lump became red and warm, with the same intense itch that had originally drawn my attention. By Tuesday, I had an appointment with my physician, and I had more than only the tick to show him. The red area had increased from the size of a silver dollar to that of my palm. I am now taking doxycycline, the antibiotic of choice, as well as an antihistamine for what is probably an allergic reaction. I share this with you as a cautionary tale to urge you to check yourselves daily for ticks that might have targeted you as a good meal. And further, don’t just assume a tick on you will be black and therefore readily spotted. Take heed from my experience. They can also be white.
