The Louis Armstrong Suite
Raymond Jacobs Photographer Portfolio of 8 Photographic Images of Jazz Legend Louis Armstrong from the 1950’s
Raymond Jacobs [1923-1993]
In the early 1950s, Jacobs studied with noted
photographers Lisette Model and Sid Grossman. As a prominent and successful advertising photographer, he received over fifty Art Directors’ Awards. He continued to do photo-essay assignments for such prestigious publications as FORTUNE MAGAZINE, ESQUIRE, HARPER’S BAZAAR, VENTURE, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, GLAMOUR, SHOW, EROS, McCALLS, REDBOOK, and many other publications. His work also appeared in many issues of PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL, and POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY. Edward Steichen, then Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City soon acquired a series of Raymond’s photographs for the Museum of Modern Art’s Permanent Collection.
Among the acquisitioned photos was a Jacob’s work that was included as part of the seminal
FAMILY OF MAN Exhibition in 1955, and for a later exhibition, SEVENTY PHOTOGRAPHERS LOOK AT NEW YORK which occurred in 1957. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN and the P.T.Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT.
Jacob’s fascination with the world of Jazz resulted in a series of remarkable, candid images captured in the
early 1950’s of legendary jazz greats which included Anita O’Day, Billie Holiday, Arvil Shaw, Louis Armstrong and many others. These were sometimes private moments. Some were of live performances. Jacob’s documented an era of American Jazz. This Suite includes eight - 11”x 14”- black and white photographs of Jazz legend Louis Armstrong and is being produced and authenticated by the Jacob’s estate in a limited edition of 100 portfolios. The Louis Armstrong Suite is available exclusively worldwide through New Arts Gallery.
