62nd Annual Convention JULY 20-22, 2017

HENRY B. GONZALEZ CONVENTION CENTER • SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Welcome to our 2017 Convention! It is exciting to welcome every one of you to our 2017 Convention. Make sure you take advantage of all we have to offer our members this year. As always, there is an exciting line-up of clinicians to bring you development opportunities and inspiration to keep teaching fun and relevant. Note that several sessions this year are cross-listed across divisions to give members even more opportunities to participate. In addition, don’t miss out on the Treble Directors Chorus, the MS/JH Honor Choir, the Southeast Texas Vocal Artists Performing Group, and an exciting Worship Service with performances by Credo and the Park Cities Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir & Orchestra. Wow! So much great music this year! Have fun and enjoy networking at the Soiree this evening, and please make time to visit the Exhibit Hall. We would not be able to pull together this wonderful convention every year without our valuable Exhibitors, Sponsors, and Advertisers. I am making a special request to you to build in time to visit exhibitors and take advantage of the many resources available to you as a director. Lastly, this is our second year to offer you the handy convention guide, as well as an expanded Guidebook, giving you more convenience at your fingertips! Give us your feedback and let us know how we can improve your convention. We always want to hear from you. Enjoy San Antonio, and thank you for your support of TCDA! Greetings from the President K ARI GILBERTSON Welcome to the 62nd Annual TCDA Convention! Thank you for making time for TCDA in your summer and professional plans! “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, Kari Gilbertson President and success have no meaning.” This quotation from Benjamin Franklin is at the core of why we are here this summer. We are conductors, teachers, artists, ministers, singers…we are professionals. We know that being here adds depth to our craft and meaning to our efforts. The great thing about TCDA is that it is exclusively “Choral-centric.” I may have made up a word, but I think it fits. The TCDA Board has been working all year to offer you the best in choral-centered professional development and growth. Enjoy the workshops, reading sessions, rehearsals, concerts, worship services, the sing-in, etc. Immerse yourself in the joy that is singing and learning. We’ve also built in time for learning and connecting with our amazing exhibitors. They are here to serve us and to make our professional lives easier, more convenient, and more efficient. May I strongly encourage you to spend time in the exhibit hall? We have the best vendors in the world, and without their attendance and their investment, we would have a very different convention. The time we spend with them brings them back every year, and their ongoing commitment to our organization allows us to contain the costs of offering you this convention. Be sure to include us in your TCDA journey. Post on our TCDA Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. #tcda2017 It has been a true honor to serve as your TCDA President. Have a great time in San Antonio and have a wonderful choir year! P.S. Don’t forget to vote! It is a right, a privilege, and an expectation of our TCDA Membership.

J.R. Smith, clinician

Wondering what to do with general music? Starting to have that loathing feeling? No curriculum from your school on what to teach? This session will take you through a semester-long music class and provide you with an accessible framework to run with. Topics covered will include: Theory, Musicianship, Games, Classroom Projects and Activities, and Choir Recruitment. Go from “HATING” to “APPRECIATING” in no time flat with invigorating ideas that will make your classroom the coolest place in school.

E Workshop 8: EL – Folk Dancing, Movement and Games - Oh My! Lauren Bain, clinician

Anyone who has taught a group of upper elementary students knows that kids need to move! Even during a beautifully planned choir rehearsal, children need an opportunity to get rid of the wiggles and pent up energy. Brain breaks are a great way to channel their energy into productive musical experiences, and these can be incorporated into concerts and programs. Participants will experience folk dances and folk games that will bring life and energy to their upper elementary choral rehearsals.

Creative Musicians

Music educators love to claim that our courses develop creativity, enhance problem-solving skills, and utilize higher order thinking. However, oftentimes our daily rehearsals demonstrate only that singers can follow our directions. With large ensembles it can be challenging to activate ingenuity in our students and train them to be true musicians, not merely obedient performers. We will discuss strategies and activities to facilitate inventiveness and leadership in students on a daily basis, while enhancing student performance, learning, and engagement without decreasing rehearsal time.
