EUKARYA BIOTECH-ART CENTER ARCH 101 | FALL 2012 | INSTRUCTOR PAZ GUTIERREZ IN COLLABORATION WITH JONATHAN IZEN AND JACQUELINE WU

> This project looks at soil surfaces and sea level rise to serve as a structural foundation in order to create an architecture that leaves little footprint on the site itself. We investigated what kind of architecture could be generated based on these conditions. Suspended above the protected wetlands of Emeryville, the main program of the building is held up by site generated research towers within the building volume. Under that mass these labs create adaptable spaces within the building, allowing for program to modulate throughout the year and seasons. The project synthesizes the territoriality and artificial implementation on the site into a unique generated form.

ELASTIC DEFORMATION DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOMETRIC UNIT

> THE ORGANISM_ Siphonophores is a class of marine invertebrates that resemble the jellyfish. They are composed of individual zooids, which are functionally specialized, live as a colony, and lack the ability to survive on its own. Siphonophores have a small gas-filled pneumatophore that keeps the entire colony upright in the vertical position and allows it to emerge above the surface of the water. The nectophore, or swimming bells, hold large quantities of mesogloea, a type of muscle tissue, in between two layers of epithelial cell layers that allow the nectophore to expand and contract, and propels the organism forward.

> EXTRACTION OF PRINCIPLES_ Using similar geometry as the nectophore and the idea of expansion and contraction, the unit derived has a pod-like form consisting of a rigid framework in the transversal direction and materials that have different elastic properties in the longitudinal direction. While the elastic bands are held in tension, its form shifts in accordance to the magnitude of placed tension or torsion: more tension allows the form to expand, less tension allows the form to contract, resulting in a smaller space condition.

> In this study of elastic properties in different materials, the form can be reduced to half its size in increments of 1/8� under contraction in comparison to be fully tensioned by ways of pulling straight outwards or by torsion. The unit introduces a new opportunity for a dynamic architecture that can be compressed when unused and expanded or manipulated when needed. It presents many possibilities of constant shifts in its form that alter and change in accordance to various spatial and environmental conditions by means of controlled tension and inflation.

WURSTER CANOPY

IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CLASS OF ARCH 269

> The Wurster Canopy was designed and built by the students of Lisa Iwamoto’s digital fabrication seminar. The purpose of the canopy is to provide shade in the Wurster courtyard for the graduation reception every year for the next 10 years. Made of laser-cut mylar modules, this ephemeral interconnected cloud expands up to 16’W x 25’L x 8’D. When taken down, it collapses like an accordian, is rolled up and stored in a small storage room until the next year.

> The concept of this project is about maximizing views of the site and within the building by interlocking the four major programs that form these unfolding surfaces and by incorporating a double skin to introduce opportunities of constant visual contact with the other programs. Using the same concept of a structural double skin from the precedent study of the Harpa building and the idea of diverging moments of this double skin from our previous project of the conceptual cut so that it is occupiable, the skin informs the vertical circulation of the building. It wraps through the building to provide structure and moments that allow users to look into other spaces.

> The overall scheme of the building is directly translated from the site analysis that studies the movement and interaction of people on the site. It takes the same form of the way Market Street cuts diagonally across the city’s orthogonal grid, allowing these programs to be interlocked in a way that permits the users to see and be interactive with multiple programs.

> The organization of program within the building is arranged so that the community center is on the first floor, in which it caters to the widest range of user types and to the community as a whole, while the recreational sports facilities that are for specific users are located above. There are two entrances into the building, one on Golden Gate Avenue and the other on MacAllister. The swimming pools are located on the second floor so that swimmers can look down over the small plaza of the entrance. The yoga room, studio, and fitness center are at a half level so that its users can overlook the swimming pools. The basketball court is on the very top floor so that spectators will have a superb view of the city and the swimming pools. The roof terrace is made from a series of slight depressions that follow the framework of the double skin to bring diffused light into the basketball court. It is scaled to a size so that it can also be used as furniture or planters.
