THE 7TH ANNUAL POPCORN N ROSES RISING STARS LIST JULY 4 2012

It’s that time of year again, folks! Time to roll up our sleeves, go through the huge lists we compile every year, and make the big decisions – as in who will make it to the top ten men and woman on the annual Popcorn N Roses Rising Stars list! We started the Rising Stars list in 2006, shortly after launching our podcast “Subject:CINEMA”, and it almost immediately became one of our most listened-to shows each year. In 2008, we started doing the show as our annual Independence Day special, and in 2010 we began ranking the honorees. This year, in addition to the announcement on July 4, we will take the next step in the lists’ evolution – we will launch “Rising Star Central”, a brand new PNR Networks website devoted to all up and coming young stars, with an emphasis on those performers who have graced the annual lists. The process for making each year’s list is not easy either. Each year, Kim and I keep a short (or, in total truth, rather long) list of performers we want to keep an eye on, and possibly put under consideration for the list. As always, there are many more performers on our consideration list than we have room for on each years’ official list, so every year in late May, we sit down to discuss (and argue) about the contenders and why each performer should or should not be considered for that years’ list. Some performers remain on the considerations list for several years (including several of this year’s honorees) before we actually name them to the list – for example, Josh Hutcherson was under consideration for the list since 2007, but didn’t make the official list – and at #1 to boot – until 2010, when he was really beginning to break out thanks to his roles in “Journey To The Center To The Earth” and “The Kids Are All Right”. Others make the list almost immediately due to a huge impression they make on us (and this happened several times this year as well). This year, 39 males and 31 females were on the considerations list, and those who didn’t make the top ten will remain under consideration for a future list.

We also have a considerable track record – we have spotted a number of young performers before they became household names, including Robert Pattinson, Dakota Fanning, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emile Hirsch, Elizabeth Olsen, and others. Overall, we are lucky enough to have about a 75% accuracy rate with our picks. Sure, not everyone is going to be huge – but they ARE still working and doing what they want to do. This year’s crop of Rising Stars – the Class of 2012 as it were – is all over the road, as we have begun considering ALL mediums – TV, Film, Music, and Internet – for the list, as long as a film career is beckoning in the future. It is our hope that if you haven’t listened to the annual announcement show yet, that you will check it out – and hopefully become a regular listener of Subject:CINEMA and a regular visitor to Popcorn N Roses and it’s sister sites that make up the PNR Networks family. We are at http://popcornnroses.com and http://subjectcinema.com; and the new site is at http://risingstarcentral.com as well. Without further ado, we are extremely pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Popcorn N Roses Rising Stars List! Enjoy!

COLIN FORD #10 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Popular with the CW’s “Supernatural” fanbase  Hit it out of the ballpark in “We Bought A Zoo”  Also a versatile voiceover artist Colin has been involved with the business since the ripe old age of four, and Kim has been interested in his career since he landed a recurring job as the young Sam Winchester in her favorite TV series, “Supernatural”. He has looks, determination and drive to make it big, and he also happens to be quite the voiceover maniac as well, frequently doing voices for “Family Guy” and as the lead in the hit Disney Channel animated series “Jake and the Neverland Pirates”. He lit up the big screen this past winter in “We Bought A Zoo”, playing surly teenage son to Matt Damon’s clueless newly widowed dad, and he has a very bright future ahead of him. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Eye Of The Hurricane” – currently making the film festival rounds, he plays a teen in a community trying to pick up the pieces after a devastating hurricane “Disconnect” – a drama following people who struggle to personally connect in our ever increasingly wired world

NINA DOBREV #10 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  SEEN ON “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” EVERY WEEK  A “DEGRASSI” CLASSIC  IN ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF THE FALL Nina has hit the big time this past year. After appearing as Mia Jones in several episodes of the cult hit “Degrassi: The Next Generation”, this Bulgarian-born Canadian import began hitting her stride in the monster hit (no pun intended) “The Vampire Diaries”. And this fall, she takes on the role of Candace, the older sister of Charlie, the main character in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s best-selling novel “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower”, starring alongside 2010 Rising Star alumni Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller and 2011 alumni Owen Campbell. Nina’s drop-dead gorgeous looks don’t hurt her either, but don’t let her looks fool you – she’s got major acting skills right at her fingertips…. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “The Perks of Being A Wallflower” – see above “The Vampire Diaries” – Season 3 begins on The CW in October 2012

JOEL COURTNEY #9 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Starred in the hit “Super 8” in 2011  About to take on another literary classic  Fell in love with acting thanks to his brother Not every kid gets to start their career working with two of the biggest people in show business, but Joel did – his first professional gig was in the Steven Spielberg-produced “Super 8”, directed by the phenom himself, JJ Abrams. And it was THE LEAD too – as Joe Lamb, our hero, he gets to have fun making films with friends and also gets the girl in the end to boot. Since “Super 8”, Joel has done the popular kids horror show “R. L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour”, and is about to take to the big screen again as Mark Twain’s classic character Tom Sawyer in the upcoming film “Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn” (like they were going to call it something else?). His charming smile and easy to like on-screen personas are making him someone to watch closely in the months and years ahead. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “The Healer” – a fantasy about a critically ill father trying to reconnect with his kids after a messy divorce “Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn” – see above

BRIT MARLING #9 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  A full blown talent – acting, writing, and producing too  Turned down a job with Goldman Sachs after getting a degree in economics from Georgetown University  Quickly becoming a festival circuit favorite What do you say when a young woman has already made her mark in several fields in show business at barely 30? Brit is doing it all, and living a dream. She wrote and starred in the 2011 festival favorite “Another Earth”, and is doing the same in 2012 with her latest project “The Sound of My Voice”. She has instincts that have made her successful as an actress, as a writer, and as a producer on most of her projects. Let her shout “I’m Queen Of The World”…she’d be right on the money. And let’s face it guys, she’s pretty HOT too… UPCOMING PROJECTS: “The Sound Of My Voice” – her latest writing and acting work, she plays the girlfriend of a journalist investigating the leader of a religious cult “Arbitrage” – a financial drama (that ironically she did NOT write, given her background in economics) “The East” – already being talked about as a sure bet for Toronto this fall, she plays a contract worker who falls for the leader of the anarchist group she’s supposed to infiltrate

NICK KRAUSE #8 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Got major exposure and a lot of female attention from his hilarious role in “The Descendants”  Now seen on the hot new soap “Hollywood Heights”  He’s grown up considerably since eating his share of fried worms Nicks’ first major exposure came in the 2006 kids comedy “How To Eat Fried Worms”. Since then, he’s racked up a half-dozen appearances on various TV shows and now to a recurring role on the new weekly summer kids soap “Hollywood Heights”. But he’s best known as the goofy Sid in the critically-acclaimed dramedy “The Descendants” from 2011. After all, how can you get punched in the face by George Clooney and NOT be remembered for it? Funny, smart, good-looking, and talented is a hard thing to find all in one place, but with Nick, you’ve got the total package! UPCOMING PROJECTS: In addition to his recurring role on Hollywood Heights, Nick is also involved with director Richard Linklater’s latest project, currently listed in the IMDb as “Untitled 12 Year Project”. Since it IS Linklater, your guess is as good as mine…

MAGGIE ELIZABETH JONES #8 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  A charmer in “We Bought A Zoo”  Hitting the small screen this fall in “Ben and Kate”  Commercials and episodics galore give her skills well beyond her tender years Maggie is the youngest performer to ever grace the PNR Rising Stars list and she gets that honor by totally walking off with her role as the adorable Rosie Mee in last Christmas’ “We Bought A Zoo”, starring opposite Matt Damon and fellow 2012 Rising Star honoree Colin Ford. In fact, she was the BEST part of that film. Already a veteran of a ton of commercials and episodic appearances, the adorably cute 7 year old makes her series debut in the fall of 2012 on the new Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate” and she’s bound to do what she does best – charm the ever lovin’ socks right off ya… UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Ben And Kate” – Fox sitcom premiering in fall 2012 “The First Time” – recent festival fave co-starring several PNR Rising Star alumni including 2011 #1 Female Rising Star Brit Robertson and #2 Male Rising Star James Frecheville “Identity Thief” – a Seth Gordon (“The King Of Kong”, “Horrible Bosses”) comedy (!) about identity theft starring Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, and John Cho

DANE DEHAAN #7 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  STARRED IN “CHRONICLE”, ONE OF THE BEST REVIEWED MOVIES OF THE YEAR THUS FAR  IN WITH BOOTLEGGERS IN “LAWLESS”  STARRED IN “IN TREATMENT” ON THE SMALL SCREEN DeHaan made the leap in 2012 from his popular role as the troubled Jesse on HBO’s award-winning series “In Treatment” as…yes, another troubled young man, Andrew Detmer, in one of the best-reviewed films of 2012, the cinema-verte found footage thriller “Chronicle”. Dane brings such intensity to all the characters he plays that he makes them instantly believable, no matter how outlandish the situation may be. This summer, he will hit the big screen again starring opposite PNR Rising Star alums Shia LeBeouf and Mia Wasikowska in “Lawless”. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Lawless”- bootlegging drama hitting theaters in August 2012 “The Place Beyond The Pines” – a thriller putting him alongside some of the hottest talent in the biz, including Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Rose Byrne, and “Animal Kingdom” star Ben Mendlesson “Kill Your Darlings” - a fictional murder mystery featuring classic beat generation writers and artists including Allen Ginsberg with another amazing ensemble cast that includes Daniel Radcliffe, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster, and 2011 PNR Rising Star alum Elizabeth Olsen

BROOKE PALSSON #7 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Recognizable to Canadian fans from her hit series “Less Than Kind”  Steals the show in director Guy Maddin’s latest oddball odyssey, “Keyhole”  About to break loose worldwide There is no doubt about the fact that Brooke’s star is on the rise. With her hit Canadian series “Less Than Kind” in the books for good, she’s branching out. As a dead girl come back to life in director Guy Maddin’s latest cult film “Keyhole”, she completely steals every scene she’s in, and Maddin’s usual habit of filming in black and white really highlights Brooke’s classic film beauty as well. Now doing both film and TV projects, we think she’s a sure bet for a booming career in the not too distant future. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Euphoria” – destined for the festival circuit later this year, Euphoria brings together two intersecting road stories about the same person - a little girl called Lily who is taken away from home by her mother Celeste, and a young woman, Michelle, who journeys home to unravel the truth about her mysterious past. Brooke is playing Michelle and it should be very interesting indeed.

JOHN BOYEGA #6 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  His role as gang leader Moses in “Attack The Block” electrified people, including director Spike Lee  John, director Joe Cornish and producer Edgar Wright are rumored to be collaborating on a proposed sequel to ATB  Already one of the most in-demand young actors in the UK John’s spot-on performance as the 15 year old Moses, a gang tough who takes on aliens in the hilarious UK horror comedy “Attack The Block” put him on everyone’s radar, and now he’s capitalizing on it. Almost immediately after the film became a festival favorite, winning the Audience Award for best film at the 2011 Los Angeles Film festival, people began to offer John roles, and he’s poised to take off into the stratosphere. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Junkhearts” – already released in the UK, this indie feature is scheduled for American release later this year “Half Of A Yellow Sun” – an already highly anticipated drama about the struggle for independence in Nigeria, look for it on the Festival circuit either in time for Awards season this year, or in time for Cannes next spring.

JACQUELINE EMERSON #6 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Featured role in one of the hottest movies of the year, “The Hunger Games”  Has her own YouTube channel promoting her music career  Very active in charity work Jacqueline is completely unlike her ruthless, conniving “Hunger Games” character Foxface, and that’s a good thing…trust us. Although the film was Jackie’s first major film role, we’re betting that it’s only a launching point for her career. Her YouTube channel shows off her music very well; she’s also a gifted vocalist. And she’s also done voiceover work in the past, providing various voices for the 2004 TV series “Father Of The Pride”. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, she knows what she wants when it comes to a career, and she’s taking the point and making it happen..and it couldn’t happen to a more talented and deserving young lady. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Son Of The South” – a period drama about the civil rights movement, Jacqueline has a featured role

SPENCER DANIELS #5 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  On our radar for several years, with over a dozen episodics and several films to his credit  Adept at both comedy and drama  Willing to take chances with a wide variety of roles Spencer has been on our radar for a number of years, having been very visible in both TV and Film since his pre-teen years, and especially since his role on the television series version of the Academy Award-winning film “Crash” and his turn as the 12 year old version of Benjamin Button in the Oscar nominated “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. And his no-line walk-on part in JJ Abrams’ reboot of “Star Trek” also helped put him front and center, even though you only see him for a couple of seconds. No matter whether he’s playing serious drama or fun comedy, Spencer clearly has the talent to take him a long way in show business. His winning smile and bubbly personality don’t hurt him, either…heh heh heh.. UPCOMING PROJECTS: ”Thunderstruck” – Spencer has a featured role in this family basketball comedy starring 2010’s #4 PNR Male Rising Star Brandon T. Jackson and hitting theaters next month. “Leashed” - we weren’t able to find out much about this project – there’s no description in the IMDb and the film’s official site is no longer active; Spencer plays “Jason Roarke” in this film. “The Midnight Game” – Spencer plays one of four privileged teens dabbling in witchcraft in this thriller due out next year.

QUVENZHANE WALLIS #5 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  A starring role in this year’s festival darling “Beasts Of The Southern Wild”  Her natural gift of being an average kid on screen can be compared to some of the great child stars of the classic era  She had never acted before If Quvenzhane decides to stick with acting, and we think she should, she could rival the legendary Shirley Temple as a child star someday. At just 8 years old, Quvenzhane is one of the youngest performers we’ve ever named to the PNR Rising Stars list, and with good reason. Front and center and in nearly every scene of the inspired fantasy allegory (and festival circuit MONSTER) “Beasts Of The Southern Wild”, as Hushpuppy, she will charm the socks off of you. She will elict peals of laughter and genuine tears, and no child star has been this effective or has made this kind of overwhelmingly powerful debut in quite a long time. UPCOMING PROJECTS: Nothing as yet, but as she continues to do the publicity circuit for the film, she continues to rack up the praise of even the most jaded reporter, and the sky is the limit for her if she chooses to continue as an actress.

BLAKE MICHAEL #4 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  A multitalented actor and musician with teen idols looks  Adept at comedy and drama  The first-ever “Disney Prince” to grace the list One look at Blake and you can see exactly why he’s going to be huge in the near future. With the uber-popular Disney Channel TV-movie “Lemonade Mouth” already in his resume, he’s about to add “Disney sitcom star” to his credits as one of the leads in the fall 2012 comedy “Dog With A Blog”. And he’s not just a pretty boy either – he handled both comedic and serious scenes from “Lemonade Mouth” and did so with great flair and charm. And prior to his work as a “Disney Prince”, Blake had done several short films, both as an actor and as a director, so obviously this 16 year old has plans for a long and varied career in the business. If he takes care to watch what he does, and to avoid the pitfalls that Zac Efron and the Jonas Brothers have had, he is going to be someone to watch take off in the next couple of years. Oh, and yeah, he’s another young performer who has taken to YouTube with his own stuff…so keep an eye there as well… UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Dog With A Blog” – Disney Channel sitcom premiering fall 2012

COBIE SMULDERS #4 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  On TV each week on “How I Met Your Mother”  Making a big screen impact in “The Avengers”  Could she be the future “Wonder Woman”? Cobie has been very visible since 2005 as one of the co-stars of the hit CBS comedy series “How I Met Your Mother”, but it was as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in “The Avengers” that she really leapt out at us and showed off just how serious her chops are. An actress, musician, model, and mom – Cobie is the total package. Back before he left the long in development feature film version of “Wonder Woman”, director Joss Whedon said she would have been his choice for the title role, and after the ass-kicking she did in “The Avengers”, I’m inclined to agree that she would be excellent in the role (although I’m still leaning towards Jill Wagner as another potential Amazon princess). With tons of tv and movies to her credit, she’s poised to make the leap to the big screen in a really big way. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Iron Man III” – she reprises her role as Agent Maria Hill, and is also expected to be in the Nick Fury movie now in the planning stages “Safe Haven” – co-starring with 2009 PNR Rising Star alum Julianne Hough and actor Josh Duhamel in this chick flick based on the Nicholas Sparks novel

BRENDAN MEYER #3 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Starring in the hot multi-national sitcom “Mr. Young”  Adept at both comedy and drama  Winning personality charms everyone he sees Brendan is another young actor who’s been on our radar for several years, popping up in a number of TV series and TV Movies since his pre-teens. But since the premiere of his hit sitcom “Mr. Young”, airing on Disney XD in the US, he’s quickly moved to the top of the pecking order. As Adam Young, a 16 year old child prodigy who returns to his old high school to be a teacher for kids who are also his longtime friends, he is spot on hilarious in all the goofy situations that arise on the show. But don’t be fooled by his comedic talents; his dramatic talents have also been on screen over the years, on the hit horror series “R.L. Stein’s ‘The Haunting Hour’” and numerous other TV and film projects. He should have no problem making the transition from teen actor to adult actor, and no matter what comes his way, you can bet Brendan will give it his best shot. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Mr. Young” – Brendan has just started filming the third season of this hit Canadian import “Girl Vs Monster” – Brendan has a featured role in this Disney Channel TV movie airing fall 2012

FELICITY JONES #3 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  The best thing about director Julie Taymor’s version of “The Tempest”  Star of the 2011 Sundance Grand Jury winner “Like Crazy”  Making the difficult transition from teen to adult actress with no difficulties Felicity has been acting since her early teens, mostly on UK television programs, and has been on our radar for quite a while. But in the last couple of years, she’s jumped into a major film career and every role she takes brings her greater praise and a growing fanbase. I wasn’t a fan of Julie Taymor’s version of Shakespere’s “The Tempest” but Felicity really stood out in that film. But she’s excellent as the somewhat pampered Brit who falls for 2009 PNR #1 Male Rising Star Anton Yelchin in one of 2011’s most critically acclaimed films, “Like Crazy”. And she never seems to stop working, either. She has several films in the can or currently underway, so you’re going to be seeing a lot of her in the near future, and without a doubt, she’s going to make you remember every role she plays. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Hysteria” – Felicity has a featured role in this period comedy about the birth of the vibrator about to open nationwide “The Invisible Woman” – again, a featured role in this period piece (oh those Brits and their period pieces, heh heh) about the hidden mistress of author Charles Dickens

ALEX ESMAIL #2 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Completely steals everyone’s thunder in the horror comedy “Attack The Block”  Straight out of performing arts school to the big screen  A martial arts master, parkour enthusiast, and major league pro wrestling fan From the moment we saw the original and hysterically funny UK horror comedy “Attack The Block”, we knew Alex was destined to take off. While co-star John Boyega (see #6 Male) was technically the lead, it was as the irrepressible and annoyingly hilarious gang pyromaniac Pest that Alex took over the film; he got the funniest lines because director Joe Cornish knew he could make them work. We have no doubt Alex will be able to handle drama as easily as he handles comedy. And with his love for martial arts and the running sport of parkour, and as a big fan of pro wrestling, most notably the American TNA Wrestling federation, Alex might be able to handle what it takes to become a major action star as well. UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Payback Season” – already out in the UK, this film is likely to go straight to DVD in the US if it gets released; Alex has a small but still noticeable role “Strippers Vs Werewolves” – this comedy has had me intrigued since I first heard of it, and it’s getting good word of mouth in the UK; again, no definite US Release date has been announced

AMANDLA STENBERG #2 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Has one of the most pivotal roles in the spring smash “The Hunger Games”  A huge career in commercials leading to acting success  Started her career as a child model for Disney Amandla plays Rue, the little girl whose demise triggers a major uprising in the spring hit “The Hunger Games”. With almost no lines – her character is seen a great deal of the time and not heard, which makes even more impressive that she takes over her part of the film, and the chemistry she has with her co-star, 2011 #3 Female Rising Star Jennifer Lawrence, is utterly amazing. With a very successful print ad career AND a very successful commercial career as well already under her belt, it’s only a matter of time before this 13 year old beauty takes off towards major stardom. UPCOMING PROJECTS: She has none announced at the moment, presumably because she’s also a full-time student. But we’ll be watching her every move over the next couple of years because she’s just AWESOME!

LUCAS CRUIKSHANK #1 MALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  YouTube star makes good  Talents both in front of and behind the camera  Genuine and self-effacing attitude will take him to the stratosphere Lucas is the perfect example of the self-made teen star – he created and starred in a series of homemade YouTube comedy videos featuring an annoying yet charming six year old named Fred. And the rest is HISTORY. Within months of Fred’s debut, it was getting millions of YouTube hits, and when Nickelodeon came calling wanting to bring Fred to TV, Lucas jumped and hasn’t looked back. He’s an excellent actor, he’s proven his talents at writing and directing, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a genuinely funny young man. The trip from the Nebraska countryside to Hollywood can’t be easy, but Lucas is handling it with grace and charm; I have never heard a cross word about him (though there ARE anti-Fred trolls out there). With a career as an actor, writer, director, and probably standup comedy in his future, he is going to go all the way…and we can’t think of a nicer guy to be this year’s #1 MALE RISING STAR! UPCOMING PROJECTS: “Fred” – Lucas continues to star as the character in a variety of formats, in his YouTube shorts, 15 and 30 minute versions of “Fred: The Show” and is now filming the character’s expected big-screen debut, “Camp Fred”, set for release next spring. “YouTube” – Lucas continues to do hilarious commentary as himself all the time on YouTube; be sure to check them out!

SHAILENE WOODLEY #1 FEMALE RISING STAR 2012 HOT POINTS:  Has hit it big in both movies and television  Started as a pre-teen actress and model  Awards attention in 2011 shows she’s going to be huge Shailene has been around for years, starting as a pre-teen model and actress. She became a household name with her peers thanks to the longrunning ABC Family hit drama “The Secret Life Of An American Teenager”. But she became a name to everyone with her award-nominated performance as George Clooney’s eldest daughter Alexandra in the critically acclaimed comedy “The Descendants” and since that time, she’s really on a roll. She brings her acting skills, along with her considerable grace and beauty, to each role she takes on, and has proven to be adept at all kinds of characters. I’ve heard her talent and professionalism compared to Meryl Streep – no small complement that is, either. Without a doubt, as she matures into adult roles, Shailene’s comet is going to be streaking through Hollywood, and you can believe millions of fans will be along for the ride, and that is what makes her 2012’s #1 FEMALE RISING STAR! UPCOMING PROJECTS: “The Spectacular Now” – upcoming teen comedy co-starring Brie Larson “White Bird” – the latest project from hot fave indie director Gregg Araki will see Shailene in her first major lead, playing a young woman who’s life is thrown into disarray when her mother disappears. Look for this at Araki’s usual Sundance haunts in 2014.
