Last year I did a lot of complaining about what I felt was wrong. I expected people to be like me and treat me the way I treat them. What I found is that people do not always returns the goodness that you show to them. So, instead of complaining I have to accept that this is just the way it is. There are awesome people and business owners here in Hampton Roads and they will be the ones that I continue to be gracious and giving towards. Last year I also learned that it is so important not to take people for granted. I appreciate each of you who take the time to read or advertise with Seven Magazine. I also learned that there is a time for everything. Its one thing to know there is a time for everything but it is another thing to know and understand that statement. There is a time to work and a time to enjoy your family and friends. I would admonish each of you to take heed to that statement. Make time for the people who are important to you. Focus on doing a little more in the community, make time to help someone in need. Try to pay more attention to your yourself not making those same mistakes that you made last year.

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend so what if there was a place you could go to design your own unique piece of jewelry that will make others envious? Snake, the owner of Original Designs, had the idea to open a jewelry store that specialized in custom made pieces. With more than 20 years of experience in the jewelry business, Snake creates quality pieces for affordable prices. With the economy in a recession, some might think that purchasing jewelry is a luxury that most can not afford right now. Yet Snake has said that when it comes to his product, the quality is worth the price because it will last forever. The biggest difference between Original Designs and name brand stores such as Kay Jewelers is that create large productions of the same pieces all over the world so the piece of jewelry that you purchase for someone special can be seen on a random stranger off the street. When you meet with Snake and his associates, they sit down and help you create your own original piece of jewelry. Snake has even said that he can not even hold onto his product because it sells so fast! Even if you don’t know what it is that you want to create, he is there to help you make your one of a kind piece of art. Original Designs creates all types of pieces of jewelry from rings and bracelets to chains for men. They are open for business Monday thru Friday 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-6pm. Check out Original Designs in Downtown Norfolk at 763 Granby Street or contact Snake to make an appointment for your own custom made piece of jewelry at (757)328-0516.

Your shoulders are tight, your head throbs, your heart pounds and you don’t recall the last night you slept peacefully. Whether it’s because your 401(k) statement just arrived or you’re dreading the New Year, you – like millions of other Americans these days – are probably feeling economy-induced stress. Whatever its source, prolonged stress can have serious health consequences – a well-known fact that may contribute to Americans’ willingness to

spend money on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), like massage therapy. In 2007, Americans spent $33.9 billion on CAM, according to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics. And that was at least a year before most of us realized just how bad the economy had become. A professional massage might be more affordable than you think, and there are good reasons to invest in one. Allowing yourself to get a massage regularly is not only physically and mentally beneficial, it will give you something to look forward to and motivation for completing whatever tasks daunt you. Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting frequent massages can do even more, this is the beauty of Massage. Here are just a few of the many benefits massage has to offer. Reduce Stress Lower Blood Pressure Manage Pain Improve Flexibility Improve Posture Improve Circulation We can all benefit from a little stress management. I will provide exceptional care and design an effective massage treatment to address your individual needs.

If there is one thing that I absolutely hate, it is having to take time off of work just to get an eye exam and then finding out after you get there that your insurance does not cover all of the expenses for what you need done. I’m pretty sure that all of us have experienced hearing the dreadful message that we have to pay more out of pocket just because the vision care we signed up for with our employer, does not pay for the total cost for lenses or even the exam! In today’s economy, every dime counts and every dollar has to stretch, so finding vision care that is affordable and offers great hours is essential. Think about it, who really has the time now a days to take off work just to go to the doctor? The truth is, only the few but fortunate. For the rest of us who need to work the full nine hour days just to earn enough money for the week, there is one optometrist in Hampton Roads who not only dedicates his time to his patients, he also makes sure that their needs are met. Dr. Troy Morgan, a native of Virginia Beach, has been a licensed optometrist for the past 2 years. At age 31, Dr. Morgan is considered to be an overachiever who set forth a five year goal plan towards success. In 2005, he graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, now called Salus University and immediately went on to gain hands on experience in the field. By 2007, he obtained his medical license and was on the path to completing his goals. On November 10th of this year, he officially had his first grand opening for his own practice, Morgan Vision Care. Morgan Vision Care offers a luxury and comfortable environment with their designer décor and their caring and friendly staff. Each client who walks in the office is greeted with a smile, superior customer service, and experiences tranquility with their procedure. Unlike many optometrist offices, Dr. Morgan and his staff, dedicate their time to their clients and choose to work around the schedule of their patients. You no longer have to schedule time off from your job just to get your eye exam finished or your contacts prescription renewed. Morgan Vision Care offers office hours Tuesday-Friday from 9am-12noon, closed for one hour lunch, and then open again from 1pm-7pm. They will be closed on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays right now but hours will change as their business continues to expand. In addition to their convenient patient hours, Morgan Vision Care also accepts all forms of insurance with affordable pricing for their services so there is no more worrying about whether or not you will be able to pay for eye care. Also from now until December 31st, Dr. Morgan is offering a 20 percent discount on all of their frames and that does include designer eye wear as well. Morgan Vision Care is worth driving to for service and is located at 4540 Princess Anne Road, Suite 125, in Virginia Beach, in the Brenneman Farms Shopping Center. To get great quality service from people who treat you like family, call Dr. Morgan at (757) 963-6304.

Atlantic Laser Tattoo Removal is Virginia’s first and only clinic that specializes completely in the safe procedure of laser tattoo removal. Unlike most “med spas” and skin care centers that offer multiple laser procedures, our certified laser specialists are dedicated solely to tattoo removal at an affordable price Laser tattoo removal is a simple, out-patient procedure, that uses specific lasers to target tattoo inks, break them down, and gradually remove them from the body. The process is far less invasive than getting a tattoo, and takes less time. Treatments take a series of sessions, each one usually lasts from 5-15 minutes or less. Patients sometimes have treatments on their lunch break, and return to work the same day. Atlantic Laser Tattoo Removal uses a q-switched Nd: Yag laser, the most effective laser in the world, at removing tattoo ink. Laser tattoo removal works by directing light, laser energy, at the tattooed area for a fraction of a second, passing harmlessly through the outer layers of skin, and focusing directly upon the tattoo ink. The laser disrupts the ink, allowing the body to break it down and flush it out naturally. The energy from the laser is measured in pulses that are delivered very fast, between 10 and 40 nanoseconds in

duration. The speed is very important, this new q-switched technology is what allows us the ability to target the tattoo ink without harming the surrounding skin. Another feature these advanced lasers provide, is called “frequency doubling”. This technology gives us the ability to have different wavelengths of laser energy, from the same laser. Each of these different wavelengths target specific tattoo ink colors, making tattoos with multiple colors easier to remove. Atlantic Laser Tattoo Removal clinics pride themselves on being Virginia’s leading provider of laser tattoo removal. We are the first and only clinic, in the state, dedicated solely to laser tattoo removal, that’s why we are able to specialize in this field. Beware of clinics that offer multiple treatments, in the same facility, they may be using a laser that is either not intended for tattoo removal, or an older outdated laser. Keep in mind that laser tattoo removal is not new. For over 20 years, patients have been receiving laser treatments on their unwanted tattoos. Unfortunately, the older versions of tattoo removal lasers are not as efficient and/or leave heavy scarring, compared to the technology that Atlantic Laser Tattoo Removal clinics use.

(ARA) - It’s a disease so common it strikes every 20 seconds, yet Americans earn a failing grade when it comes to basic knowledge about diabetes, according to a recent Harris Interactive survey conducted on behalf of the American Diabetes Association. The Association has launched a new initiative, “Stop Diabetes,” in an effort to better educate the public on the physical, emotional and economic toll of the disease. Americans earned a 51 percent passing grade when asked a series of questions about diabetes, according to the Harris survey. The results showed that several diabetes myths and misconceptions are common and that diabetes remains a misunderstood disease. Myth: Diabetes is not a serious disease. When asked to rank which disease (diabetes, breast cancer, AIDS) was responsible for the greatest number of U.S. deaths each year, not even half the respondents chose diabetes (42 percent). Fact: Diabetes causes more deaths per year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. Myth: Eating too much sugar can lead to diabetes. According to the survey, approximately one third of respondents knew this myth was false (32 percent). Fact: No, it cannot. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease; type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and a diet high in calories, whether from sugar or from fat, can contribute to weight gain. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and exercising regularly are recommended to manage your weight.

Unfortunately, too many people disregard the other risk factors for diabetes and think that weight is the only risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Most overweight people never develop type 2 diabetes, and many people with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweight. The Stop Diabetes movement aims to educate people about the seriousness of the disease and to stop its spread bringing those affected by it together to share their stories, raise awareness, and support fundraising efforts. “We hear stories every day about the tragic toll diabetes takes in every corner of our society,” says registered dietician Sue McLaughlin, CDE, president of health care and education for the Association. “Stop Diabetes is a wake up call for the nation. Diabetes kills more people than breast cancer and AIDS combined.” “One in three children born today will develop diabetes if this trend continues,” she says. “Rather than let these facts scare us into denial and apathy, all Americans need to take a stand to stop diabetes by learning their risks and how they can prevent or manage this serious disease.” To join the Stop Diabetes movement, visit stopdiabetes.com or call the Association’s National Call Center at (800) DIABETES (800342-2383).

Myth: If you are overweight or obese, you will eventually develop type 2 diabetes. According to the survey, approximately three in five respondents did not know that this is a false statement. In addition, more than half of respondents did not know that risk for developing type 2 diabetes increases with age. Fact: Being overweight is a risk factor for developing the disease, but other risk factors, such as family history, ethnicity andcheck age also a role. outplay Seven Tv @ www.757pages.net

(ARA) - While the words “swine flu” are enough to scare adults and children, experts from Everest College’s nursing programs explain what H1N1 is, and offer advice for how to protect yourself from it. What is H1N1? H1N1 virus, more commonly known as “swine flu,” is a new strand of influenza that has been labeled a pandemic flu by the World Health Organization. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Who is at risk for H1N1? Complications from the flu usually arise in children under 5, adults over 65, and adults with chronic medical conditions including pregnancy, diabetes and asthma. What can you to do protect yourself from H1N1? Wash your hands with soap and water often, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose and limit contact with sick people. Flu shots against H1N1 are now available in all states, though many have a limited supply. “It is important to realize the flu affects everyone differently. Given this knowledge, we want to do all we can to protect ourselves and our families as flu season approaches,” says Cheryl Heintz, RN, BSN and nursing instructor at Everest College in Merrillville, Ind.

(ARA) - If sneezing, sniffling and coughing are frequent sounds in your house, don’t worry, you’re not alone in trying to find ways to stop them. An estimated 50 million people suffer from indoor and outdoor allergies in the United States, costing Americans nearly seven billion dollars annually, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Asthma and allergy triggers - called allergensaccumulate in unexpected places throughout your home. Furniture, bedding, curtains, drapes and carpeting can each house dust mites, pet dander and outside allergens entering through the windows. Here are some tips from appliance manufacturer LG Electronics to reduce the number of allergens in every room: * Use washable floor mats, and run them through the laundry once a week to remove small food particles. * Don’t let damp towels pile up as mold and mites can spread quickly. * Pet beds hold a lot of dander. Give them their own sleeping area somewhere in the house that isn’t a bedroom. Wash the pet beds weekly to cut down on dander collecting. * Make sure your wash cycle removes allergens. The LG SteamWasher with Allergiene cycle reaches a temperature of 131 F, which is recommended by the National Institute of Health to kill allergens, while still being gentle on fabrics. This cycle has been proven to remove more than 95 percent of household allergens like dust mites and pet dander from washable fabrics. It’s the first

26

washing machine to receive “asthma and allergy friendly” certification from AAFA. In addition to reducing allergens, the SteamWasher is Energy Star rated, reducing bills as it saves consumers more than 8,000 gallons of water each year compared to conventional machines. * Replace your mattresses every 10 years, and vacuum them regularly. * Use washable slipcovers on couches if you have pets to help control pet dander. Run the slipcovers through a steam cycle regularly. * Consider purchasing more products, including kids’ toys and table linens, that are machine washable to help reduce the number of dust mites causing you to sniffle. * Draperies can also harbor allergens. Use vertical blinds or other easy-to-clean window treatments, or wash and dry-clean fabric curtains once a month to keep the allergens to a minimum. “While removing allergens like dust mites and pet dander in your house won’t cure your allergies, it certainly will help you protect your family by reducing their exposure to these asthma and allergy triggers,” says Mike Tringale, director of external affairs for AAFA . “By designing a special wash cycle that meets our standards, LG has created a tool that can help Americans in their efforts to reduce their exposure to allergens throughout the year.” Courtesy of ARAcontent

You can always tell when someone is passionate about what they do. You know whether it‘s the first thing they wake up in the morning thinking about and the last thing they think of before they go to bed at night. This is the feeling you get when you talk to Phattz about the work she is doing in the hair industry. Phattz describes herself as a driven individual who grew up the hard way and didn’t finish school. Although she attended nursing school and was on the verge of graduating; Phatzz began working towards getting her cosmetology license and built her clientele while she was in school and never completed her nursing degree. When she was a little girl, Phattz says she always played school and she was the teacher while other girls were playing with baby dolls. She always knew she wanted to be an educator. Phattz has been privileged to work and hone her skills in some of the top upscale salons in Atlanta. Phattz found ATL to be very fast paced and she learned to adapt. The stylists were very business minded; some where real estate agents and many owned different types of businesses. Phattz knew she didn’t want to be the average stylist. Of course when Phattz returned to Virginia she was surprised to learn that VA was at a stand still compared to the fast pace of Atlanta. This is when Phattz decided to chase after something

others weren’t chasing after – education! Phattz has worked and traveled with Patrick Antonio, a well respected industry professional who specializes in cuts and coloring; David Fields, a celebrity hairstylist; Mega Hair, who are the originators of the “fusion” technique; and Studio 238 with Marie Antoinette. Phattz has won 1st place recognition in the Milky Way Competition, voted number one out of 471 stylists and has won 3rd place in another national competition. She’s done hair for Patrick Antonio Red Carpet Event in 2007 and in 2009 Phattz styled for T.I.’s clothing line Akoo in Virginia Beach. The Phattz Pretty Hair All the Timez Advanced Training Institute’s grand opening took place in January 2010 and currently has 9 students enrolled. The school is able to license hair professionals in instruction, braids and cosmetology. Beginning in March, their license will expand to license those interested in nails, barbering, and aesthetics. Since Phattz is a traveling stylist, there are plenty of opportunities for her students to learn and gain hands on experience. There is more to come from Phattz and we are certain that we haven’t heard the last from her.

The stylists should serve as a role model and source of inspiration for

their clients. They listen to the needs of the client and are able to provide their expert opinion and practiced expertise to enhance the patron’s natural beauty. The charismatic attitudes and creative minds of these professionals allow Textures Salon to cater to its diverse group of clientele. Now owning and working in Textures Salon, she strives to provide the same opportunity for herself and her stylists to express themselves in their individual ways and together generate a family environment. “Every day is different. Looking for a new nail salon that provides a comfortable atmosphere, quality service, and affordable pricing? The best salon to check out in Hampton Roads is All About the Sole. Located in Hampton, All About the Sole, offers products that most salons around here do not; natural organic products. Imagine getting a pedicure with products that contain no chemicals, are good for your skin, and are actually edible! Owner Swazette Francois, a native of Hampton, who opened her business nine months ago, had the idea to create a nail salon that specialized in providing treatments that would be healthy for the skin and nail without the added chemicals. You will never walk in All About the Sole and smell that strong familiar scent from acrylics and other chemicals. In addition to using organic treatments, All About the Sole has a special treatment that no other salon in the area offers; fish therapy! As a treatment used to remove bacteria from the pores, Dr. fish (or nibble fish) are placed in the pedicure tubs and gently nibble on the feet of clients as they remove excess skin. After hearing about the treatment on television, Swazette ventured to northern Virginia to test out the treatment before bringing it to Hampton Roads. Other treatments that the foot spa offers range from the basic pedicure to a signature pedicure using real chocolate and even manicures; all using products containing lemon grass, mangoes, peppermint, and even lavender. With over 15 years of experience as a nail technician herself, Swazette and her employees are passionate about healthy foot care and ensuring that each and every one of their clients walks out with a great experience. “It’s a good place to come to escape to the hustle and bustle of the day. When you come in, you step in to a whole different atmosphere, we provide a different vibe than your traditional nail salon. says Swazette. As the owner of All About the Sole Foot Spa, she has made it her goal that every customer will leave feeling like they made a new friend. As the business continues to grow, Swazette plans on expanding her services to include brow shaping, massages, and facial treatments. While they are based in Hampton now, she does have plans of adding another location in Richmond to provide service to. All About the Sole Foot Spa brings affordable luxury to the Hampton Roads area. Historically, the barbershop has always been a place for men to go to relax, unwind, and freely talk without the presence of women. A place to kick back and chop it up with the boys, Nexx Barbershop creates such an environment. As the owner of shop, Justice re-invented the original dream of the shop by bringing a modern and professional vibe to the spot. Years before, the shop was not just a barbershop, but also a hair salon. When the combination no longer was effectively working, Justice decided to take over as the sole owner of

34

the shop. After re-introducing the shop to the public as just a barbershop, Justice knew that with all of the shops just in Virginia Beach alone, he would have to find a way to make his establishment stand out from all the others. He took his business to a new level by remodeling the space with new flooring, a wet bar, large plasma T.V’s, and a more professional atmosphere. “When clients come into the shop, they are not just coming to a place of relaxation; they are coming to an

www.757pages.net

experience.” With all of the competition in the area, Justice no longer feels that he has to keep up with the other shops. As a matter of fact, it is more of the other way around. He provides an upscale and luxurious scene that other barbershops will have to compete against. When asked what really draws customers to his shop, “It is a comfortable establishment that really makes you want to stay”. Justice provides a full staff of barbers so there is no more waiting for hours just

to get your turn in the chair. His clientele is currently at 600 people and is steadily growing each day. As more and more people hear about the shop and visit the location, they quickly become regular customers. In the next few years, Justice plans to expand his clientele to over 1,000 and hire even more barbers to handle the large amount of business that will be coming in. Visit Nexx Level at 3972 Holland Road Ste 104, Virginia Beach or contact the shop for your next appointment at (757) 284-2462.

Every year many people make New Years resolutions that they say they will follow, but they never do. Being overweight can cost money that many people don’t have to spend. A weight loss resolution is only effective if you follow it. We all know that being overweight is not health and can lead to many major health problems. Now people are starting to realize that they need to get in shape and stay in shape to avoid those costly trips to the doctor’s office or hospitals. Now the question becomes what do you do to lose the weight in 2010 and keep if off? In order to create a weight loss resolution that you will follow you need to set some attainable goals and objectives for yourself. Without goals and objectives you will not lose weight and keep if off, it’s just that simple. You can have to best intentions in the world to lose weight, but without goals you have to way of planning how you will go about losing the weight. Your goals are like your road map to the future. You would not go on a trip without knowing how to reach your destination. So why would you start a weight loss program without a plan of action that consist of goals and objectives.

When you sit down to create your New Years Weight Loss Resolution plan, think about all the benefits of why you need to lose weight. Then think about how much healthier you will be as a result of getting your weight down to a manageable level. You also need to think about how much your self confidence and self esteem will be boosted because you have lost the weight. Do you remember the last time you put on an outfit

and looked at yourself in the mirror and you were so proud of the way you looked? But now that you have gained all of that weight you no longer looked at yourself that way any more. Well, you need to get that look back and you can do this and you can lose the weight. True weight loss starts in the mind and if you are not in the right frame of mind to lose weight, guess what you won’t lose weight. You need to convince yourself that this time you will devise a plan to lose weight and you will stick with your plan. If you don’t convince you that this is achievable, you have lost the battle before it even starts. I would like for you to stand in front of a full length mirror and have a talk with the person on the other side. Tell that person that 2010 will be the year of the new you. No more excuses, no more putting off exercising, no more eating foods that you know are harmful to your body, no more finding ways to get out of working out. Tell that person that you will not be stopped this time. Let that person in the mirror know that this time you have set realistic goals for yourself and you also have objectives that you plan to meet. You know how much weight you want to lose and you have developed a plan to lose the weight. You also need to tell that person that you have set milestone dates that will measure your progress and you have a reward and punishment system in place if you meet your objectives or fall short of an objective.

You tell that person in the mirror that they will not get in your way this time. Losing weight is not easy and if it was everybody would be thin. But you can do this and you are not alone. There is so much that society tells us to believe about ourselves. Whether we are tall or short, light or dark, thick or thin; society has an impact on what we believe about ourselves whether we choose to believe it or not! Full Figured Creations was established In September 2008, Cherina established Full Figured Creations with a goal of catering to Real Women of Size who needed a little help with self empowerment and self confidence. “Full Figured Creations are giving these women the tools that they need, not only to make choices but to transform them into actions and outcomes. Believing that the first step is not to unlearn the things society has led her to believe about herself but embrace them and change them. It is then that we must reach within and find the self-empowerment to command the respect that we rightly deserve from others.”

continues to grow, they are seeing more and more women come by word of mouth; women are starting to hear about the miraculous transformations that are occurring at FFC which is creating a curiosity among the full figured women of the Hampton Roads area. “Women have gone from wearing big bulky pants and boots to wearing clothing that is feminine and lady-like because they feel better about themselves.” Cherina describes some of the changes in attitudes she’s seen from some of the women as unstoppable. Full Figured Creations inspires women with Biblical wisdom and eventually, as they begin to change their way of thinking, rejection is not an option and they will not take no for an answer. Full Figured Creations has developed a program called Seasons which focuses on teaching women that everything you go through is just for a season. F.F.C.’s Seasons program meets the last Friday of every month and F.F.C. engages in a community event at least one Saturday out of each month. Whoever registers for F.F.C. is qualified to participate and there are no restrictions limiting who can join. If you would like more information about Full Figured Creations please visit their website at www.fullfiguredcreations.com. For more info contact: 757-927-8028

This is just the beginning and the future is bright for F.F.C. Cherina shares that she has had the opportunity to visit a variety of modeling agencies and model agents from New York to Miami, FL. Along the way, she heard it all! You’re too this or you’re too that! Knowing how the industry works; these agencies assume women of real size have little to no self esteem. Full Figured Creations has great plans for full figured women in the near future. On January 15, 2010, F.F.C. will expand their vision to Durham, North Carolina where they hope to inspire and support women and meet other aswww.757pages.net piring motivational speakers. All across America, business owners and employees are experiencing the impact of the declining economy. Even in Hampton Roads, there are many business owners who are now closing their doors after dedicating their entire lives to their company. Yet while all of this is going on, there is one industry that is still going strong and rising above (hair salons), and Rhea Carson is one woman who determined to make sure that her business stands above the rest. Less than 20 years ago, Rhea Carson, decided to turn her talent for creating beautiful hair into a business endeavor. After relocating to Norfolk, VA, from her home state of Connecticut, she opened her own salon close directly across from Norfolk State University. While her salon

was successful for a few years, she reached a point where she knew that she would need to relocate her business to broaden her fan base and bring in new clients. Because she enjoys working in Norfolk, Carson decided to open a new salon in the city she loves, but in a different location. Over seven years ago, she completed her task and officially opened Nu Beginningz Hair Salon. While it may be a small shop, Nu Beginningz Hair salon, offers clients one thing that many salons may lack, one on one attention from beginning to end. With each client that walks into her shop, Rhea takes the time to focus on what the customer wants to receive and what they need to maintain beautiful hair. In addition to personal time, her services are affordable for the general public and continue turn new clients into returning customers. Nu Beginningz Hair salon offers a variety of services from cuts and color, relaxers, top of the line weaving techniques, and also certified training in wig care. When asked what keeps her business thriving while others are diminishing, Rhea says she works for the people and wants every person who walks in her salon to feel like they are appreciated and taken care of. She also says that her down to earth personality plays a huge part in her success, because many of her clients have not only turned to her for her services, but also her friendship. In the future, she hopes to transform her business by including an on site daycare service for her employees and clients. After visiting her salon, I can say that this is one business owner who definitely is on the road to success. To schedule your visit to Nu Beginningz salon, contact Rhea Carson at (757) 218-7914.

SEVEN: Maree Antonette, how long have been in the hair and make-up industry? MA: I have been doing hair since I was in high school. Professionally, I have been licensed for the last 18 years. I like to consider myself a Hair Technician because I am an educator and I educate my clients while I am doing their hair. I have been a certified make-up artist for 10 years and I have my own make-up line named Maree Antonette Cosmetics. SEVEN: So, I heard that you just came back from a tour. Can you tell us about it? MA: Yes, I would love to. I have recently partnered with Kevin Kirk. Kevin is a well respected color technician in the hair industry; he was recently featured in the movie Good Hair with Chris Rock. Kevin has also won the Bronner Brothers Hair Show four times. We have developed a tour named The Art of Cutting and we are traveling from city to city allowing stylist to exhibit new hair cutting techniques that they are using. SEVEN: Have you been inspired or influenced by anyone in particular? MA: I am influenced by people who are tangible. People like Patrick Bradley, an international hairstylists and Belinda Baker. She is fierce. I love that she is so detail oriented. There is no way you can sit in her class and not get something out of it. SEVEN: Do you still attend classes? MA: I sure do. Although I am an educator, I believe that it is very important to continue learning. The hair industry is a very trendy field. And as we all know, trends come and they go. So, you have to constantly educate yourself. Even though I am a travelling stylist and make up artist, I still make time to take classes. When I am at my station, I have a DVD player so that when I have down time I can educate myself. SEVEN: What’s happening in your business right now? MA: Well, as I mentioned earlier, I just came home from The Art of Cutting Tour and that is an ongoing project. I do a lot of hair and make-up for print and video on location, I have celebrity clientele that I work with and currently we have our seasonal launches for Guilty Pleasure and Alter Egos for Maree Antonette Cosmetics. At the upcoming Bronner Brothers show, for which I am an educator, I will be launching two new products; the M.A. Glove and the M.A. Sleeve. SEVEN: Since your business is growing so quickly, do you find that you have time to relax? MA: I find that when I am not working I have to make myself relax; because this business and these products are my babies it’s hard to relax sometimes. My business is a new business that doesn’t have the look of a new business – that takes a lot of work. I am a mother and a foster parent. Actually, my daughter is my assistant. Family is very important to me and they support me in my business. I have also found tremendous support from my church Living Waters Christian Fellowship. My pastor, Bishop Steven W. Banks and his wife Dr. Keira Taylor Banks have been very supportive and encouraging as well. 10019 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA www.mareeantonette.com

In society we teach kids that the best way for them to be successful in life is to go to college and learn the tools necessary to be knowledgeable in a career. The idea of self educating oneself in a trade or career path is not often spoken about and even rarely practiced. The truth is that you can be just as successful going to college and earning a degree as you would be buying books and educating yourself about a career choice. One woman in Hampton Roads actually took the the-

48

ory and turned it into a fact when she decided to taught herself how to be a fashion designer/consultant. Tamika Albritton, an active duty service member of the U.S Navy and former plus size model, decided it was time to create her own designs and show the world that she too had what it takes to be successful in the industry. I recently had the opportunity to meet with the creator of T.W.A.S (Thick Women Always) clothing, at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake and was really amazed at how she was able to make

www.757pages.net

her dream come true with little assistance from any outside sources. Here is our interview: Natasha: So Tamika, I understand that you are a fashion consultant but how did T.W.A.Z actually get started? Tamika: Well the business got started last year. I actually used to be a full figured model myself and a lot of clothes that the models were given to try on would work because some of us had big hips or were endowed in the breasts. So I said ok let me do something to try and help us out. So I taught myself how to sew clothes and I’ve only been sewing on the machine for less than a year now. Natasha: Wow! So you didn’t have any training in fashion? Tamika: No, no training in fashion. I was just blessed with it. This is all raw talent and I love it! (both of us start laughing) Natasha: What actually happens behind fashion consulting? When someone comes to see you what can they expect? Tamika:, Ok, when they come in I ask them what type of look they are looking for, what type of event they are going to. I look overall at their style and ask them if they like punk rock; do they want to something a little sexy? I discuss the different types of fabrics I have with them. Most of the women I deal with are between sizes 8 to 18 so with those sizes I like to use materials that stretch because it hugs our bodies in the right way. Then I will do a sketch of what I think would look good on them and see if they like it. We’ll go over the different parts of the outfit and make sure they like it. From there I actually do their measurements and do the basic outline of the dress and have them try it on. Once it fits, I can finish the design from there. Natasha: So you design the whole outfit yourself? Tamika: Yeah, they’re covered from head to toe. Right now we have a lot of stuff that has been designed. We just got finished doing a big fashion show where I had 26 models, so that’s like putting out two lines at one time. I got a lot of great feedback and we want to mass produce

a lot of those units we put up on the stage. Natasha: What type of designs did you showcase? Tamika: I would say my stuff….people say my stuff is more eclectic. I love laces and fur; I like to accentuate the positives. If you have nice breasts or nice curves, I like to accentuate that about you. We used a lot of lace, leather, fur, and jean material. There wasn’t anything on that stage that wasn’t practical, that you couldn’t wear….stuff you could see someone out at the club in or at the mall in. I like to think outside the box. Natasha: Do you add makeup applications to their outfits along with shoes and accessories? Tamika: It’s just the outfit but fortunately just this past fashion show that we did, Shoe City sponsored every last pair of shoes that the models wore on the stage. They were outstanding! They let my models and I go in their store and choose everything we needed. It was awesome. So I’m hoping that we can get some more backing from companies. Natasha: Where is your business located? If someone wants to have you design something for them, do they come see you or do you meet them? Tamika: Most of the time clients have been coming to me because I work out of my house, but currently we are setting up our office in Hampton in the Full Figure Creations building off of Coliseum drive in Hampton. We’re going to be upstairs, so no longer will people be coming to my house! (laughing) Natasha: What age group are you catering to for your fashion line? Tamika: We have t-shirts and I want to work on a jeans line for teens because we have teens that don’t look like teens anymore. (we both laugh out loud) I would like to go to a woman who is 80 years old. I want to cover all age groups. Natasha: If you had to summarize the future outlook for your business, what would you say the plan is? Tamika: I would say, household name. That’s where we’re aiming, myself and my business partner Nikki McGregory, a household name for thick women. Because we’re the forgotten size, either you’re dealing with the real petite women or the real full figured sizes but that in

between is where we are missing something. We want to bring focus to our size. Natasha: You have to admit that it’s pretty phenomenal that you went from being a plus size model into owning your own fashion line without having any technical training in the industry. What advice would you have for those people who want to get into fashion consulting who don’t have any technical training or a college degree? Tamika: I would say that the hardest part is actually doing it and I’m doing it. Research, if it’s something you really want to do, if there is a certain technique you want to learn; the internet, go to the library. I don’t have a lot of money to go out there and take all of these fancy classes. I just sat down and made a plan for myself and decided what I wanted to do and researched it and now I’m doing it. Don’t doubt yourself, if all else fails jump in. Believe in God, walk by faith and not by sight and you will go where you need to go. Natasha: What message do you want to people

“no matter what size you are really, you can feel good about yourself. You can be sexy, you can look very professional; you don’t have to be naked to be sexy.” to receive about your business?

Tamika: I would like people to know that no matter what size you are really, you can feel good about yourself. You can be sexy, you can look very professional; you don’t have to be naked to be sexy. Feel good about yourself. Tamika Albritton, the self educated designer who took mixed her dreams with ambition and determination to create a successful clothing line and consulting business, is a woman of strength and courage. She is the epitome and true example of creating your own destiny and choosing the measures of your own success. For more information about Tamika and T.W.A.Z log onto www. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” But what is real beauty? Is it a fabulous outfit, gorgeous make-up or a magnificent hairstyle? If you ask Shawnie she just may tell you that various forms of beauty walk into her full service salon everyday. “Allure,” is located in the heart of the Historical Phoebus community. However, the people that know Shawnie say that the real beauty lies within Shawnie. What she does for the community outside of her salon only adds to the beauty that makes her an unsung hero. Shawnie began her career in hair as a shampoo girl at Molly’s Soft Touch in Hampton, VA. After two years of shampooing, she realized, “I can do more than this.” She enrolled in New Horizons Vocational School for Cosmetology and received her license. Even after receiving her license, Shawnie felt there was still more she could do to enhance her skills and make the salon experience even more pleasurable and meaningful for her clients. She went back to school at the Institute of Healing in Newport News and received her Esthetician License. “I am always upgrading my skills so I can keep up with the demands of this industry.” After working for 16 years in a salon in Hampton, Shawnie realized that it was time for her to venture out on her own. With faith in God, years of experience and a supportive family, Shawnie opened the new “Allure Full Service Salon” in Historic Phoebus in December of 2008. Allure offers an “escape” to a full service salon. On staff is a massage therapist, barber, weave specialist, lash technician, and waxing specialist. Located at 25 Mellen Street in Phoebus, Shawnie has turned her “doll-

house” into the salon of her dreams. “Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” That is a true testament to the works Shawnie performs outside of the salon. “My enjoyment in helping and interacting with people comes naturally. I feel it is in my God given talent, a calling of sorts.” Shawnie has a passion for working with troubled teens, especially teen moms. She has a partnership with juvenile services and is an advocate for the youth in the community. Shawnie participates in 95.7’s “Day of Sharing for Back to School” for underpriviledged children. She also facilitates prom awareness seminars that educate the youth on the potential dangers of prom night and heightens their awareness of safety measures such as no drinking and driving and saying no to drugs. Her services, however, extend beyond helping teens. She annually chooses two women from the Battered Women’s Shelter and provides them with a make-over. Due to partnering with the Phoebus Ultra Lounge, she makes sure the ladies have a hot and nutritious lunch. Beauty can be defined in many ways. Some see it as an outward appearance and some see it as deep within. To encompass both outward and inner beauty one would have to consider oneself truly blessed. Shawnie is the epitome of the word beauty, inside and out. She possesses a warm heart and a giving spirit that makes her a natural beauty in the eyes of her clients, her community, her family and friends.

(ARA) - With the New Year just around the corner, could it be time for a new you? Have you been wearing the same outfits, in the same order? Has your hair and make-up regimen remained unchanged for the last decade? Reinventing your style can give you a new attitude and outlook. And with a few simple updates, you shouldn’t have to worry about breaking your budget. A new style does not mean a whole new wardrobe. “You can start with garments you already have in your closet,” says Anne Hankey Forman, fashion marketing and management instructor at The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago. “Mix up the way you wear your pieces,” suggests Art Institute of Philadelphia fashion instructor Karen Karuza. “If you always wear a white blouse with a black skirt, try wearing a lavender sweater.” Adding new accessories can bring last year’s - or last decade’s - outfit back to life. Mary Jo Miller, department chair of fashion and retail management at The Art Institute of Atlanta, says: “Scarves, hats and gloves make your current wardrobe more up-to-date.” Shoppers may want to consider getting those accessories in purple, the hot color this season. Karuza agrees: “Accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize!” She recommends costume jewelry, belts and colored tights as well. A new pair of trendy shoes is another simple way to update your look. “They’re a fun and easy item that makes you look trend forward,” says Forman. And what is the hottest foot trend this season? Both Forman and Miller agree you can’t go wrong

with the over-the-knee boot. Miller suggests, “Wear them with your skinny jeans, dresses, jackets and leggings from last year’s trends and have an instant update.” What about getting professional help to update some older garments? “Make sure the garment is worth it,” cautions Forman. Karuza agrees that the garment has to be a high enough quality to justify the cost of a great tailor. If you can spend a few extra dollars on some new garments, Miller offer this advice, “It’s critical that you remain true to your own style and remember that not every trend works on every body.” Forman adds: “Dress for your body type, invest in classics, think about what makes sense for your lifestyle and dress for the life that you have.” And instead of looking just to your closet for a new look, take a look in the mirror. Both Miller and Forman agree that a different hairstyle and new makeup can dramatically change and update your style. When reinventing your style, what’s the top “don’t”? All three fashionistas agree - do not overspend. They suggest you create a budget and stick to it. Make sure the trends you buy today are still wearable tomorrow. And don’t sacrifice quality for quantity. Karuza cautions, “Don’t spend a lot or over-invest until you’ve test driven your reinvention!” If you’re a fashionista looking for a career in style, learn more about options at The Art Institutes schools by visiting www.artinstitutes.edu/nz. It’s Friday night and you are on way home from a wonderful night of spending time with your friends and loved ones when you hear a siren and see police lights glaring in your rearview mirror. You pull over and the officer asks to see you drivers license and then asks, “Sir, have you been drinking tonight?” Unfortunately, the answer is yes. From this moment on things begin to whirl out of control. You are being taken in to the station and possibly arrested for driving while intoxicated. Sure, this scenario may seem a bit of a stretch, but I am sure that when you start you day off you don’t plan to spend the night in a jail cell. Who does? Hopefully, many of us will never have the need for a bail bondsman, but isn’t it good to know that if you did JP Paige not only comes highly recommended but is just a phone call away. Here’s a phrase to remember, “If you want to be free call JP!”

64

As a bondsman, Mr. Paige understands that good people can find themselves in bad situations. With that in mind, JP Paige is proud that he is able to serve his community in a manner that is non-judgmental and professional. “Unfortunately, I grew up needing a bail bondsman so that enhances my ability not to judge. To the mom whose son is locked up and she’s feeling discouraged, I offer them the encouragement that where your child is now is no indication of where he will end up”. Mr. Paige believes that it is important to show compassion towards his clients. If you are locked up and you want to get out you need a bail bondsman to make that possible. The process of posting bail involves a contract that is guaranteed by a bail bondsman, like JP Paige, and the individual posting bail. The bail agent guarantees to the court that the defendant will appear in court each and every time the judge requires them to be present. The defendant is charged a percentage of the bail amount, for this service. The defendant, a relative or friend of the defendant, typically contacts a bail bondsman to arrange for the posting of bail, before getting released. Prior to the posting of a bail bond, the defendant or a co-signer must guarantee that they will pay the full amount of bail if the defendant does not appear in court.

www.757pages.net

Mr. Paige makes it clear that there are many bondsmen who are in this business for the sole purpose of making money because they know you need them and they know your back is up against the wall. You may be wondering what makes JP Paige different? Well, JP Paige’s genuine concern for his clients is what separates him from the others. He cares and he goes beyond just getting his clients out of jail. “I’m the bondsman that helps good people in bad situations!_”

When it comes to applying for a mortgage, good credit is perhaps the best and most effective tool to have at your disposal. In fact, your credit rating is so important that many experts say you should make sure your credit is good before you start applying for mortgages at all. Your credit rating, while it may be the most important factor, is by no means the only factor that lenders consider when deciding whether to grant you a loan. That means it’s still possible to get a mortgage even if your credit rating is not optimal. So how do you go about this? Understanding your Credit Rating The first step to getting a mortgage with bad credit is understanding how credit scores actually work, and why they affect your ability to get a mortgage. Your credit score is based on several different factors, the amount of available credit you have, how much of the available credit you have used, the length of your credit history, your employment history, and whether you pay bills and debt repayments on time. Your credit rating is a number between 300 and 850, with 850 being the best credit score you can achieve. As far as lenders are concerned, anyone with a credit rating of 700 or more is a “good risk,” meaning someone who is likely to make mortgage repayments on time every month until the loan has been repaid. Below that level, lenders consider you are more of a risk in terms of whether or not you will continue to make payments on time. If your credit score is below around 620, you’ll find it difficult to get an affordable mortgage, and below 500, most lenders aren’t willing to offer loans at all. Repairing Your Bad Credit

repairing any damage done. To check your credit score for errors, simply obtain a copy of your report from one of the three main credit-reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Examine the report thoroughly, and check for errors or out-of-date information. Even a single error can reduce your score by a significant margin, so this is a worthwhile step to take. To fix the error, call the creditor involved and explain why you think the item should be removed from your report. Make sure the creditor agrees to send you a letter verifying that the item was removed, to provide proof for the credit bureau. Next, it’s time to start repairing your credit score. The most effective way to do this is simply to pay your bills on time, and keep your debt total low, while maintaining a small amount of available credit. Lenders like to see a fairly small amount of available credit, with a wide gap between the amount of credit you have, and the amount you actually use. Another point lenders look for is a long credit history, so if you have old credit card accounts that are in good standing, keep those open and active in preference to newer accounts. Getting a Mortgage with Sub-Optimal Credit Even if you’ve taken steps to repair your bad credit, it might not be good enough for lenders to consider you an excellent risk. If your credit is still below 700, you may find you have to do some serious shopping around to find a lender willing to accept your application. If you’re able to make a larger down-payment, this can help off-set the negative effects of a lower credit score. Other factors that may help include a good income-to-debt ratio, and a stable employment history.

Lower than 620, you’ll probably be limited to what are known as sub-prime lenders. These offer loans to people with bad credit and other issues, but the loans typically have higher interest rates. The problem here is that if your credit is bad due to tight finances, you’re less likely to be able to afford the higher repayments that come with the higher interest rate. If you’re in a situation where a sub-prime mortgage is your only option, it’s very wise to stop and think about whether it might be a better option to wait until Repairing bad credit has two main steps: first, www.757pages.net your credit is higher. check your credit report for errors, and second, So what can you do if you have bad credit? First, know that if you have bad credit and you want to apply for a mortgage, it’s important to do whatever you can to repair your credit before you apply. A second important point is that it can take six months to a year to rebuild bad credit enough that it will positively affect your ability to get a mortgage. So it’s also vital that you’re willing to be patient, and take the time to repair your credit before applying.

Rachael Faunce has made a name for herself in the Hampton Roads community. Many know her from her days at 103 JAMZ, a Clear Channel radio station, where she was a marketing consultant. Currently, Rachael is the Marketing Coordinator for The DowningGross Cultural Arts Center operated by the City of Newport News. While conversing with Rachael it is clear that she is passionate about music and compassionate towards the artists who are trying to make it in the music industry. For that reason, Rachel started Rachael Faunce Enterprises, where she provides marketing and consultation services. Rachael analyzes her client’s needs and then develops a strategy to move her clients in the direction that will be the most successful. When working with artists, Rachael understands that sometimes she has to start from scratch. Her services range from developing press kits, creative writing, bios and artist development. Everything from A to Z. Rachael stresses the importance of branding and having a successful and creative marketing campaign. Going above and beyond for her clients is apart of what

she does. Creating opportunities for her artists to participate in parties and tying them into community events are some of the ways that Rachael gains exposure for her clients. Rachael says that she often receives calls from artists who just want to ask a question or need some advice. When she knows someone is passionate about their music but they just don’t know what to do, she doesn’t mind helping them and pointing them in the right direction. She is currently partnering with Ms. Blendz, a well-respected former radio host, to develop and present a series of seminars and workshops to offer aspiring artist some much needed information and direction. Rachael Faunce began her career as a receptionist for a television station at the age of 19. Her boss saw something in her and felt that she would do well in promotions. Rachael describes her experience working in promotions for 7 years as boot camp. She credits her former supervisor Toni Jones as the reason she is where she is now. Although Rachael has some college experience, the majority of her experience has been learned hands on. In many ways, Rachel feels as though she stumbled into this career path because she didn’t know what she wanted to do. Fortunately, for the artists she currently works with and the many she will help in the future, Rachael has excelled in her chosen career path of promotions, marketing and consultation. She is currently working with R&B artist Tisha Howard, who’s single “You Are”, is currently in heavy rotation on 103 Jamz. Rachael also consults for rapper LOS-C and is promoting his single “She’s Callin’ Me” and C.U.N.A. Entertainment from Ocean View. Rachael says that she has never been “in the box”, instead she has been “all over the box and outside the box” in how she thinks. M$. Blendz is originally from Gainesville, Georgia. She is now in Virginia by way of the U.S. Navy. Unfortunately, while in the Navy M$. Blendz was injured and received a honorable discharge from the military. Fortunately, for those of us who have come to know her, M$. Blendz decided to hang around Hampton Roads for a while and was discovered at, what she considered her going away party, when a DJ didn’t show up at the club. A friend dared her to tell the club owner she was a DJ and of course she couldn’t resist. M$. Blendz says she will always remember a dancer named Bandit who recommended that the club owner hire her to DJ for the club permanently. At the time she didn’t have a name so she became known as DJ Punkin and continued to DJ for the next 9 years and the rest is history. As time passed, she adopted the name M$. Blendz. (Based on her ability to mix) The Boodha Brothers announced on the radio that they were looking for DJ Punkin (AKA M$. Blendz). To her surprise, they were looking for her because K.J. Holiday wanted to hire her to work for the radio station as an on-air personality. M$. Blendz began her radio career with the radio program Foxy Fridays with fellow hosts Golden Girl and Lex Coupe. Soon, there were other shows that Ms. Blendz came to host like Crunk Radio and The Production Room. It was when her mother passed away that M$. Blendz lost her motivation to DJ, however, she decided to pursue some of the goals and ideas that she had become passionate about. It was then that M$. Blendz founded The Blendzville Awards and eventually added The Blendzville Hip Hop Awards show. SheTv felt@ifwww.757pages.net BET check out Seven

What Kind of business is Burn Central? At Burn Central we specialize in CD and DVD duplication. Generally, we cater to independent artist. Burn Central is a place where artists can get their CDs professionally duplicated. We also sell and repair duplicators and we also sell all blank media associated with duplication. How long have you been in business? My partner and I have been in business for 6 months now. Surprisingly, we have already outgrown our current location. We are already making plans to move to a larger building.

10 years. Throughout the course of that time, I worked for Def Jam as an A&R rep, at Rush Artist Management, and various other production/management companies like Supermen Production (DJ Clark Kent). I have found that presentation is almost as important as talent these days. There are a lot of artists who are really talented but they don’t take the time to work on the presentation of their product. When you pass on a CD to A&R and the name of the artist is scribbled on with a marker, more than likely that CD is going to get tossed. What promotions are you currently offering?

What made you start a CD duplication business?

We are offering 100 promo CDs with full color art for $100.

I noticed that there was a need for this type of business in the Hampton Roads area. The larger companies that many people use for CD and DVD duplication are in New York and New Jersey. My partner and I felt that artists, DJs and others would benefit from having a company that was local.

What does the future hold for Burn Central?

Are your prices competitive? The fact that we are local helps to keep the cost down. We’ve done a lot of research and we have found that our prices are more than competitive since the other companies charge almost double. Our clients are also able to order short-runs and that’s a service that the other companies do not offer. Why is there a need for your services? I worked in the music business for about

Our goal is to become a one-stop-shop. We are planning to expand Burn Central by adding a recording studio, pressing plant, graphic arts and eventually a record label. At the moment, we are working on two TV shows on what we are calling Burn Central TV. The first show is called Spinners, a rap battle concept and the second show (in association with Board Room Records) is named Meeting at the Board Room, which will feature a one-on-one of how to get signed. Where is Burn Central located? 5804 Chesapeake Blvd, Norfolk, VA. Our number is 757-390-4442 and our email is brad@burncentral.net. We also have a blog at www.burncentral.blogspot.com.

(ARA) - Hunger is a growing problem globally and the United States is not immune. Nearly 12 million American children have limited access to the nutritious foods they need to learn and live active, healthy lives. Hunger impairs children’s health in significant and long-lasting ways by impeding growth and development, contributing to poorer mental health and playing a part in a child’s greater susceptibility to obesity. On the other hand, the World Health Organization has reported that there are 1.6 billion overweight people in the world. The rise in both obesity and those without enough resources for nutritious meals is creating plenty of areas of need. Here are some ways you can make a healthy investment in yourself and neighbors in need. 1. Volunteer There are resources available to help locate volunteer opportunities all over the country - such as with Operation Frontline; a program from Share Our Strength that connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a budget. You can find a volunteer opportunity near you by visiting www.strength.org. 2. Make a donation. There are many great programs focused on long-

term strategies to end childhood hunger - the difference between feeding a family tonight and helping to ensure that a family never again has to worry about where the next meal will come from. You may not think a dollar goes far, but by investing in the right organization, it can go further than you might imagine. For example, as little as $35 can help feed a child three meals a day for more than a month, according to Share our Strength. For less then the cost of a nice meal out, you can help a child forget about his hunger, and focus on just being a kid. 3. Get involved. The national Lose for Good campaign from Weight Watchers focuses on both achieving better health and fighting hunger at the local, national and global level. During a seven week period, from Aug. 30 to Oct. 17, Weight Watchers Members and Online Subscribers worked toward adopting a healthier lifestyle and lost approximately 4 million pounds, allowing the company to reach its $1 million donation goal to help feed children and families in need. In addition, during the campaign, Weight Watchers staff voluntarily organized local food drives at over 3,300 locations across the country, resulting in the donation of more than 2 million pounds of food to local food banks. “Its well known that obesity has an impact on a variety of health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer,” says David Kirchhoff, president and CEO of Weight Watchers International, Inc. “At the same time, so many people in our country and abroad are struggling to get enough to eat. Now more than ever, we all need to take action - for our own health as well as the health of our families, friends and neighbors.” As the leading organization working to end childhood hunger in America, Share Our Strength works to surround children with healthy nutritious food. “Children in America are hungry not because they lack food,” says Bill Shore, co-founder and executive director, “but because of a lack of access to programs that can help.”

Dknyce hails straight from the heart of Hampton Roads. Dynyce started his career in 1996 performing at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk with Nicole Wray. Back when folks from VA were getting put on the map, Dknyce decided to sign on with Bad News Records while his friend Nicole Wray signed with Missy and Timberland. Although they chose different paths, Dknyce was invited to Atlanta by Missy and Timberland to perform for several of their shows. Unfortunately, Bad News Records did not live up to their promises and Dknyce decided to take matters into his own hands. If you could go back and make different choices what would you do differently? I would definitely go to school and get an education. I was on the fast route and about to be rich. I felt like I knew I was gonna make it and like I didn’t need an education. If I had gone to school I could probably be the CEO of my own label by now. I could have made better business decisions. I believe that that the young people coming up now should make sure they stay in school and get their education. It’s important to learn from other people’s mistakes. If I could make some different choices, I would have stayed off the streets. I wasted a lot of time by being locked up. I was away from my family and I definitely couldn’t pursue my career behind bars. What lessons did you learn while you were away? While I was away, I did a lot of writing about what I wanted to do with my future. I decided to stay out of trouble and I was convinced that being locked up was a waste of my time. I want to send a strong message especially to the youth that whatever you want to do make sure you take the positive route to get there. Trying to take the easy route only takes longer. Believe me! I have learned that there are no shortcuts. Don’t invest in stupidity when you can invest in a craft or a talent. Who are some of the artists that have inspired you? I grew up listening to old school music and groups like Crime Syndicate and Missy and Timberland. Who are some of the artist you have performed with? Just this past November, I opened up for Rick Ross at a local night club in Chesapeake. I have opened up for Missy, Timberland and Magoo; Gritty Mob, EPMD, and Naughty by Nature to name a few. What projects are you working on now? I’m currently working on a new project named UNCROWNED KING VOLUME I. The theme of this project is to bring attention to the VA movement. Basically, I’m just trying to say that the VA movement didn’t just start, but it’s been going on for a long time. There are artists like me who have been here since the beginning. A lot of VA artists were doing it for a while but just weren’t www.757pages.net main stream. contact:-757-217-5838

Ever wish you could get more done in a day? Now it’s possible - and easy - to pay bills, transfer money, check balances in your bank accounts, even send money to a strapped family member, all with the device most people never leave home without: the mobile phone. New upgrades to mobile phones give multitasking parents and busy people the opportunity to take care of routine chores while on the go. Whether you’re sitting in the bleachers or on the bus, you can use your mobile phone to help manage everyday financial tasks. Some people think they need “smartphones” when it comes to mobile banking. Not true. The type of phone you own doesn’t matter, as long as you can send and receive text messages. For example, some innovative banks offer a text banking service that gives customers easy access to account balances, lets them review activity, such as seeing when a bill was paid, receive alerts about low balances and provides locations of nearby ATMs. Text banking doesn’t require you to log into a Web site. At Wells Fargo, for example, customers who sign up for free text banking service (mobile carrier charges still apply) can send a quick text message to Wells Fargo with a command like “bal all” and receive their balance in moments, without logging in or going to a Web site. And, by typing and sending “command” to Wells Fargo at 93557 (shortcode for “Wells”) customers will receive a list of all text banking commands they can use, such as “ATM,” to retrieve additional information. After the initial text to 93557, the text number can be saved in the mobile phone’s address book to help make

the process even faster next time. Do you own a smartphone? Then it’s even easier to take care of tasks and manage money while on the go. By downloading the icons you want from your favorite Web sites, including one from your bank, such as WF.com (for Wells Fargo Mobile), you can pay bills, and even send money to family members whether they are in town, traveling out of state, or in another country. For Arah Erickson, head of mobile banking at Wells Fargo & Company, the ability to manage money on the go allows her to spend more time with her family. “As a mom who works outside the home every day, I have to make the most of each minute. I love that I can pay bills while waiting to pick my kids up from school or from their friends’ birthday parties. I can also look at the balance in my checking account right at the store before I splurge on an expensive household item or gift.” According to Javelin Strategy & Research, mobile banking may offer a greater degree of security than relying on paper statements because consumers can monitor their accounts any time, any place. That means consumers can spot suspicious transactions and stop fraud far faster than they can with paper statements. So next time you have a question about your finances and you are not near your bank or a computer, think about “banking on the go.” Banking on your mobile phone can help save time. This allows you more time to do the other things you need and want to do.

Two young men from the same neighborhood in Suffolk decided one day that the best way for them to make money in life was to create their own business. With the bright idea of his friend Ski, Hollywood used the name Flamed Up to launch a hip hop music label that would be known to the world as Flamed Up Entertainment. After bringing in long time friends and neighbors Artistic and B’Menace, two up and coming artists, the young men knew that with all of their talent, motivation, and ability, they were bound to make an entertainment company that would spread music all over the world. I met up with these young men at the 7 magazine office and was able to sit down and really get to know how they came together and what they were bringing to the table individually as well as collectively to really push their business towards success. Natasha: So, B’Menace, Artistic, and Hollywood, you guys individually helped create Flamed Up Entertainment. Even though you are all solo artists who actually runs the everyday operations of the company? B’Menace: Everybody has separate entities. It’s not like it’s a group, we’re just an entertainment company. Hollywood: Well actually my friend Ski is the one who runs the business side of the company and Artistic here is not only an artist he also makes all of the beats for us. Everyone writes their own stuff, there’s no ghost writers in this. Natasha: So whose album is about to drop first, whose album can we look for first? B’Menace: See when we come together, we do it as a collaboration. We do it as Flamed Up. We just dropped the Flamed Up mix tape. That’s Family Love of Money With Destiny on Rise and that’s in the streets right now. Natasha: And where can we find the album right

92

now? Hollywood: You can find it everywhere. We’re out pumping it in the streets every day. We’re doing it all on our own, just grinding, rain, hail, sleet, and snow…(we start laughing) We got a couple of mix tapes coming out soon like The Real McCoy, the Young Starz with Artistic and Flavz, Menace and Hollywood’s mix tape too, so they should all be coming out the first of the new year. B’Menace: we’re trying to wait until after everybody gets out of the recession and throw a party (as everyone starts laughing) Natasha: So B’Menace, as an artist what would you say your music is about? What can people expect to hear from you? B’Menace: I write about stuff I’ve actually seen. Most people, they write about stuff that they portray but me, I write about real stuff and everything that I’ve been through. That’s why I started rapping. This December will make two years since I started rapping, so the way I started off it was a way to relieve my stress and write about what I’ve been through. Everything that I rap or write about is about me. Natasha: When listening to your album, would you say that your music tells a story of your life? B’Menace: I wouldn’t say that, well maybe some of the songs I write. You’ve got to get it out there and then I touched basis on the hype songs for the girls. I touch on the real, girls, whatever. Natasha: What’s one single that you think our readers should pay attention to that describes who you are and what you represent? B’Menace: the song Because I’m Black, because it just touches on the struggles and the things that I’ve been through and it’s something that everybody can relate to it. You know I write

www.757pages.net

party tracks, street tracks, that’s how I was raised so Because I’m Black symbolizes me. I mean I can’t say my whole life story right now but I can say that I was raised in the streets and I made a come up out of that. I went from thinking I wasn’t even going to graduate to being on the Dean’s List in college. I was working on a project for myself called The Coming of a Menace, but I pushed it back because when I drop my solo, I’ve got to make sure it’s perfect. Natasha: What are you guys hoping to gain from creating Flamed Up Ent.? You have to admit that there are a large amount of artists out right now creating their own record labels so it can be hard to decipher who is going to be number one. What’s going to make you stand out from everyone else? Hollywood: We’re all real and we grind. This is more than just music. Flamed Up Entertainment is more than just rap. If you’re a singer or a model, anything we’re gonna hop behind you. We support each other. It’s a movement you know what I mean; we pump the mix tapes to get the name buzzing everywhere. We’re trying to become a demand out here and coming from where we’re from you don’t get chances. You’ve got to go out there and get what you want. You tell people you from Suffolk, they like ‘oh you from Suffolk? Oh that’s country’; they ain’t trying to hear nothing you have to say. So we’re just out here grinding. B’Menace: We’re not trying to just fit in one category, we’re trying merge out, we’re talking overseas money, everywhere, you know global. We’re trying to be everywhere that wants us and if they don’t want us, we’re gonna give it to them anyway. Natasha: Do you think that now that you guys have so many groupies around that it is harder to find a woman who is really sincere and into just you? Hollywood: Where my circle was at in the beginning that’s where it’s going to stay. I stick to people I know over the years. To me, you find out what people are really like when you’re at your lowest point. When you’re at your lowest point, people are quick to turn their back on you. So if you ride with me through my lowest point then I’ve got love for you. That’s why I like to keep my circle tight. I love everybody in my circle but I’ve got love for people who are outside my circle. Natasha: Well I want to thank you guys for taking the time to sit down with me today I love the fact that you guys are grinding in the streets and still remain humble at heart. I definitely wish you guys much success in the future. She dumped you, but you’re still in love with her. So what’s next? Do you walk away and try to move on, or do you work toward getting your exgirlfriend back? Either one of those two choices is fine, but the one thing you simply cannot do: stay friends with your ex. Not only does the exgirlfriend friendship never work out, but it also destroys any chance you might have of ever getting back together again. I think we should break up, but I’d like to stay friends... It sounded so simple and easy when she said it. And of course, you immediately agreed. Staying friends with your ex girlfriend enables you to still talk to her, email her, text message and even hang out together from time to time. Instead of losing her completely, you’re only losing the romantic aspects of your relationship. You were friends first, right? So why can’t you still be friends even after you break up? Quite simply, friendship after breaking up is impossible. When you’re still in love with your exgirlfriend, friendship puts you in some very awkward situations. You’ll want to look for signs that your ex still loves and cares for you, but you’ll be weighing them against her just trying to be nice. In turn, she’s going to feel awkward around you because she knows you still have definite feelings. From here, there’s a lot of pretending. You’ll pretend to be such a great buddy who’s truly happy for her suc-

cesses in life, but in reality you’ll be jealous that her life no longer includes you in it. She’ll pretend to care about your own situation, but she’ll gauging your every move and keeping you at arm’s length. Your ex girlfriend will also hide certain things from you if she senses they will upset you something true friends would never have to do. What will happen when your ex starts seeing a new guy? Can you really be happy for her, or will you feel like someone punched you in the stomach? In a clean break, you would never have to witness those things. But in staying friends with your ex girlfriend when you still love her, you get a front row seat to her new social life. You’ll feel envious of every little thing she does without you, and when she begins seeing a new boyfriend it will feel as if your heart is being ripped out all over again. Instead of trying to swindle your way back into her heart through a guise of friendship, why not trying more legitimate ways to get your ex girlfriend back? If you want to date her again, there are methods and techniques to draw out her more romantic feelings and emotions for you. Learning these methods can help put you on the path to creating an all new relationship with your ex, instead of pretending to be her friend. Only by being honest with yourself can you begin working toward a reconciliation... up until then, you’re going to push yourself deeper and deeper into the Friend Zone: a place that’s very difficult to climb your way out of.

The next big breakout artist has emerged out of Hampton Roads and is ready to make his mark in hip hop as a force to be reckoned with. DeWaine Faulks aka E Dot from Norfolk has been writing and performing his rhymes since a kid. During his years in high school he started his own hip hop label, Home Base Entertainment, and set the foundation to be in full control of his career. Now eight years later, he has managed to create a balance for establishing his career as well as the four other artists signed to his label. His upcoming album, the Elevator Man, provides the listener with a ride of music going from one floor to the next. He has created a perfect mix of songs ranging from street hits, club bangers, and strictly for the ladies. Each song is said to tell a story that will lead from the bottom level of the Elevator Floor and take you all the way to the top and leave you with an upbeat high. His song “The Elevator Man” is a symbolic description of himself. “The song is an evolution of me, because I’ve come from the bottom and I’m striving for the top”. While he is promoting the release of his album now, the Elevator Man will not be available to the public until the spring of 2010. As an artist, E Dot describes himself as an innovative young artist who is hungry for the love of the game. Grinding in the streets every day has made him not only passionate and knowledgeable about the hustle but also well known in the area. His mix tapes, Critical Condition and the Product have been sold throughout neighborhoods tremendously. With his skills and knowledge, he is able to pass down his wealth of information to other artists trying to make a name for themselves in the industry. As the co-owner of Home Base Entertainment, E Dot is responsible for molding the talent of all artists signed to the label. He is seen as the go to man in the company for guidance and advice on how to create a hit song. As his artists continue to learn and grow under the label, E Dot is sure to the value of his success financially as well as creatively. His goal is to sign more artists and continue to motivate and guide them through the course of business and entertainment success. Eventually with the success of his own career, he dreams of creating various business ventures such as starting his own clothing line. Some might wonder with all of the hats he has to wear in business and the goals he wants to accomplish, when does this busy entrepreneur even has time to sleep or even take time for himself? Yet as E Dot knows, in order to gain success in life, you have to put in the work now to get the benefits later. So many artists in Virginia know that getting recognition from major record labels is an arduous and difficult hurdle to overcome. As one knowledgeable person said once, “you work hard now; you sleep when you’re dead”. Carlos Daniels, aka Los-C, da Baker Man, is a hip hop artist based out of Norfolk who is steadily making a name for himself in the industry. As the CEO of his own hip hop label C.U.N.A Minute Ent., Los C has full control over his own music and is able to guide new artists on the path towards success. Since the age of 12, it was his writing skills and talented flow showcased to the public that has led to his large fan base throughout country. With the success that he has received and the knowledge he has gained, he has been able to teach artists under C.U.N.A Minute Ent., how to stay hungry in the game. While he has taken the time to mold the careers of his artists who specialize in hip hop and R&B, Los C da Baker Man also finds time to continue working on his own career. He recently shot the music video for his hit single, “She’s Calling Me” from his upcoming album. As for the release date for his new album, Los C has said that he plans to put it out for the public as early as April or May of this year. When listening to his album, fans can hope to gain a better sense of who Los C really is as an artist from his hard hitting messages for the streets to his sexy lyrics for the ladies. This is one album that can not be passed up on!

working with Interscope Records on a music deal. With all of the hard work and grind that he has put into his music, it is no wonder that this hustler from the streets of Norfolk is about to create a permanent mark on hip hop music. To learn more information about Los C like where he will be performing next in the 757, check out his Myspace page at www. myspace.com/loscva as well as on Twitter at www.twitter.com/loscva. Look out for his upcoming album to drop in local FYE music stores as well as Walmart in the spring.

With every new artist trying to become the next hit creation in hip hop, it took someone to ignite the spark of inspiration inside of them, and for Los C that person was Jay Z. The rap mogul who was once a member of the streets himself, re-invented the term and vision for the hustle game and has demonstrated that it is possible to not only be a rapper but an entrepreneur as well in this industry. It is the roads that Jay has paved along the way that have made artists like Los C strive for his success. His drive and ambition alone has landed him the opportunity to travel across the country to places such as North Carolina, Miami, Atlanta, New York, and California and perform alongside hip hop superstars such as Rick Ross. In addition to his touring, Los C is currently working on a deal with BET to land a spot on their music video rotation for his new single “She’s Calling Me”. Dontae aka Dirty D.O.N is a lyrical talent who is flooding the streets of 757 with his straight forward messages about whom he is as an artist and what he represents. Originally from Norfolk, he found a way to start his own business that would allow him to play two very important roles: the artist and the owner. He could sell his own music while also recruiting other artists who could be a part of his record label company Grinding Rubel Entertainment. Like many independent labels, D.O.N has the creative freedom to say what he wants without the corporate strings and attachments a main stream label would provide, yet he knows that it will take the guidance and acceptance of the main stream labels to catapult him to the next level of stardom. As a lover of music and writing, D.O.N found a way to express his emotions and thoughts that would allow for an audience to listen to. He started his label company after breaking away from TRB (Third Related Brotherhood), a powerful squad of musicians a few years ago, when he realized that he could create his own company and have full control over what sells in the streets. “The name Grinding Rubel” as D.O.N says,” comes from hard work because I have been on the grind all this time trying to get my music out there and I definitely see the fruits of what grinding can do”. His latest mix tape I Am the One dropped August 9th of this year with rave reviews in Maryland and allowed him his first taste of success. It is also the reason why he shows so much passion to work hard, with each and every artist he works with. So what makes D.O.N a stand out artist in Hampton Roads? According to the man himself, it is because, “I don’t necessarily fit into any category or any box. Just even starting out to

104

get the label known as a respected name, I had no help. I pretty much had to be a leader and make it happen”. With songs like Post Up and Bag Em’ Up, D.O.N tells the story of his life and takes the audience on a journey into what struggles he has had to overcome. Born into a family of eleven kids, where his mother did not want children, six by his mother and five by his aunt, D.O.N was seen as the outcast child. He learned quickly that the only person he could depend on in life was himself. It was the lessons he received in his youth that gave him the strength to feel confident in his talent without worrying about what everyone else thought. One of the biggest lessons learned was that of assurance, when his sister (the closest member of his family) ran away from home and was removed from the household. After that, it was clear to him that he would have to look out for himself. Like many talented artists who are trying to make a name for themselves, D.O.N has found that people will try to bring you down. His current work I’m On My S*@t sends a hard gritty message about some of the haters who have crossed his path. He considers himself a trendsetter and because of it, people tend to envy what he has and where he plans to go. He is busy working in the studio on his untitled album scheduled to drop June 2010 along with his next mix tape the Norfolk Nightmare scheduled to drop December 31st. With his most recent performances being at places such as Blakely’s, Entourage, the Virginia Beach Amphitheatre, and Norfolk State University, Dontae has created a large fan base for himself. His next performance will be opening for Slim Thugg in February at Blakely’s. To get more information about his next performance, log onto Dirty D.O.N’s website at www.myspace.com/definitelydon and also listen to his latest music. You can also place an order for his mix tape on his site or visit Player’s Beauty and Barbershop off Newtown Road.

As the manager of hip hop group Short Circuit and R&B singer Samantha Starz, Fernando aka Uncle Nan, has created a name for himself as the man of action. After discovering Short Circuit at a talent show two months ago, he put them on the map as the next best thing to come out of Hampton Roads since the Clipse. With radio appearances and album releases happening so quickly after meeting with the group, Fernando is on the right path towards completing his goal of getting Short Circuit signed to a major music label by the summer of 2010. He has also worked hard to get public appearances for Samantha Starz through talent shows in Hampton Roads as well as in Florida. While he has been working with two talent groups so far, he is currently on the search for more talented musicans, models, and dancers. If you are looking for someone to manage your career and make you a household name, contact Fernando at (856) 495-4803 or hit him up at fernandobells@yahoo.com. This hip hop duo hailing from Norfolk created a family unit with two cousins who decided to combine their musical talents to create one sound. Young Fresh and D Smooth created their group name Short Circuit to describe the loose fuse of their music that will allow them to blow up into hip hop superstars at any minute. Their first taste of stardom was their recent feature on 103 Jamz with radio personality Mz. Blendz where they were given

the opportunity to showcase their latest work. Currently, they are featured in the Superstar Tuesdays Showcase held every Tuesday night by Desiree Williams, at Illusions nightclub in Chesapeake. They have been a crowd favorite throughout the competition and are now in the finals to win an all expenses paid trip to New York City to compete in the well known talent competition, Faces In the Crowd. In addition to using media outlets and talent shows to spread their name all over Hampton Roads, Short Circuit has been working hard on their album, Life and Misery, which will drop in the streets in the spring of 2010. Right now, they have been busy pumping out mix tapes in the streets to help create a larger fan base for when the album does drop. When asked what songs they wanted their fans to really pay attention to, Short Circuit responded by saying, “we definitely want our fans to look out for I See You, Check Out My Swag, and Strictly for the Haters. We’ve got the club songs, the songs dedicated to the ladies, and the songs for the streets; we have a little bit of everything for everyone”. When you want to gamble your money on success, you take your chances in Las Vegas, but when you want to win the jackpot of a hit record, you contact Jon Vegaz. As a native of Hampton Roads, Jon Vegaz is a music producer with the Midas touch. With musical training in four different instruments: guitar,

108

piano, saxophone, and live bass, Jon has been able to diversify himself and bring a new flavor and sound to the cities of 757. When I spoke with him over the phone, I was able to tell immediately that this was no ordinary guy. This was a man with an amazing talent who lived up to his name by intertwining his adventurous lifestyle with

www.757pages.net

his musical ear to create a one of a kind sound in Hampton Roads. During the conversation, there was a sense of ease that he brought which made me feel as though I was talking to an old friend from back in the day; which makes it easy to see that wherever he goes, Jon can make a friend out of anyone. So what makes Jon Vegaz such an amazing producer? Other than the fact that he has worked with hip hop celebrities such as Nicole Wray, Kinetic 9,Wu Syndicate, and producing the remixes for Nas and Jay Z (for the movie American Gangster); he has over 20 years of experience in the game. Also he was named the 2008 and 2009 VA Ultimate Beat Battle Champion along with being the recipient of the 2008 and 2009 VA Producer of the Year Award. Although he is a hip hop producer, Jon has a love for rock and roll music and started his musical career listening to classics such as Led Zepplin,Black Sabbath and Journey. Even though he loved rock music he also fell in love with hip hop listening to Rakim, the Get Fresh Crew, and the Geto Boys. Growing up in Portsmouth, his family introduced him to different genres of music that allowed him to start his own rock band as a kid. With so many musical influences surrounding his upbringing, Jon is able to draw inspiration from some of the great artists and mix them into new sounds for today’s music. Because there are so many different artists trying to shine as a best there ever was, many do not realize that it takes more than just remaking the hits that sold records. You have to surpass what is popular today and think about what is better for the future. Jon, himself has said that he fears there will come

a day when the sound of hip hop will become unified. Using references from the originators of hip hop and mixing it with new creations is the way to keep hip hop alive and constantly growing. When working with artists, he sets high standards for himself as well as for the artists by not selling just another gimmick. “I think it takes a little bit more pride in yourself than just selling yourself short”, says Jon, “You lose all sense of who you are as an artist and I am able to see that from production. I might go to a spoken word poetry one night or be at an underground rock performance to draw inspiration from”. During his free time, Jon is still using various resources to draw inspiration for production. By traveling to different countries, he not only learns more about the culture of people, he is also able to bring back new sounds from all types of music. Like his career, Jon likes to take risks in life because as he says, “you only fall as high as you climb”. Currently he is working on production of the new albums for Wu Syndicate as well the Hofflaboyz and the Traksmithz. In the future, Jon hopes to venture into movies and produce the soundtracks played in films. Like the famous city, with Jon Vegaz, when you play with quarters, you win with quarters and when you play with dollars, you win with dollars.
