First, giving honor to God for if it wasn’t for Him there wouldn’t be a me. I want to also thank Him for giving me another opportunity to do what I love. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” - James 1:22 The Seventh Universal Law of Success is the Law of Action, this is the law of performing the activities of life. These are positive principles of success that we should begin to use on a everyday basis. How we act toward other folks, how we conduct our own selves, our way of looking at things and if negative, try to find the positive. Make the most of any situation that you might find not pleasing to you. If you con-

4

tinue to find nothing but negativity in that non-pleasing situation that you continuously complain about, you’ll probably not make it to far past that situation. Take charge and see the positive in any direction because trust me it will help you in the long run. I didn’t like sales when I began working, nor did I like paperwork. When I would interview for all of these jobs, they would ask me, “what would you say is your weakest point with sales,” I would always say, “paperwork.” I hadn’t been bought aboard but had already shot myself down. When you speak out your downfalls your on the right direction for failure. Here’s another example, I hear recession this and recession that, I don’t have the money….you do know that there’s a recession.......right?, etc. but my spirit won’t allow me to agree with that. Now is the time to take charge, you can find other ways to make another income. If you’re a barber, learn how to become a stylist and if you’re a restaurant owner, try to find other ways to cook for folks, like catering. Always have a goal and think of ways to obtain it. Close your eyes and see it, open your mouth and speak it, open your nose and smell it, hold out your hand and grab hold of it. Look at yourself, do a self evaluation. If you are not where you want to be then change direction (I don’t mean tell your boss off and storm out the door) and make small moves for the big achievement. PEACE

(ARA) - Spring -- for many it’s synonymous with warmer days, greener landscapes ... and a more plentiful housing market. Just as daffodils start popping up in neighborhoods across the country, so too will “for sale” signs adorn lawns across the country. But given the current economy, does this mean that it’s a good time to buy for firsttime homebuyers? For Eric Wright, assistant director of admissions at Brown Mackie College - Louisville, who has more than 12 years of experience in the mortgage industry, the answer is yes. “It is probably the best time to buy or refinance ever,” he says. “It is a buyer’s market, and interest rates are the lowest they have been in history. Also, homebuyers can receive an $8,000 tax credit this year if they purchase a home by Dec. 1, 2009.” Formerly a broker, banker and lender dealing with residential and commercial loans, Wright currently helps mainly friends and family members in meeting their financial needs. In addition to the low interest rates most mortgage lenders are currently offering, the affordability of homes is rising. The National Association of Realtors Housing Affordability Index reported a 13.6 percentage point increase to 166.8 in January, which according to

8

the association, signifies a new record high. In simple terms, this means that a single family earning nearly $60,000 annually could afford a home that costs $283,400 with a 20 percent down payment. A year ago, a single family with the same earnings and down payment could afford a $263,300 home. Low interest rates. Check. Affordable pricing. Check. That’s all grand, but how do you know if buying now is a good time for you? “If you are first-time homebuyer who is planning on purchasing a home in the near future, the best advice I can give is to evaluate your financial situation,” says Wright. “Pull a credit report on yourself, calculate all your debt, know your liquid assets and have reserves, and expect a few extra monthly bills like homeowner dues, waste management and water.” Wright also conveyed that it’s important to know your debt-to-income ratio, as this is how an underwriter will determine your income qualifications. To get this number, add up your entire monthly outgoing bills and divide the total by your monthly gross income. The key is to be under 45 percent. Next step? Shop around. Wright advises to get at least three to five offers from lenders

(ARA) - It’s all over the news -- employment has fallen sharply recently. College graduates looking for a job often view the rise in unemployment as a formidable obstacle. Suzanne Roush, director of career services at Brown Mackie College in Moline, Ill., offers advice to graduates who are looking for work. “With the increasingly downward spiral of our economy, the outcome for new graduates can appear bleak at best,” Roush says. “But there are a few simple rules they can follow in their search for employment.” Roush works with graduates on a daily basis to prepare them for the work of finding a job. Her advice helps people set themselves apart from the crowd, and avoid discouragement during the search. Here, she shares a few simple rules that help in the search for employment.

records of all job descriptions, applications, and dates of contact.” Roush points out that two or three months can pass before a company contacts applicants. “I’ve heard many stories where someone calls for an interview, and the applicant doesn’t know who is returning the call. Not a good start,” says Roush. Organization helps when the callbacks come. “When a company calls to set up an interview, you will have the job description and can tailor your responses,” Roush continues. “If an applicant is not organized, that can be the cause of not landing the position.” Be Persistent

Persistence eventually pays off. “Do something every day that will take you a step closer to landing a job,” says Roush. “Check newspapers and Web sites. Treat your job search like a job.” It is common for college graduates to accumulate more than 100 jobs in a “job search” book. “Every 10 or 15 reGet Organized sumes result in a phone call,” says Roush. “It’s “It is extremely important to be organized in a numbers game. The more resumes you send the job search,” says Roush. “Creating a ‘job out, the more chance you’ll have of garnering search’ book is a good first step. You can keep a response.” www.757pages.net

10

Network “It’s important to talk to as many people as possible when looking for a job,” says Roush. “A high percentage of jobs aren’t even advertised. Don’t be shy about joining trade clubs and associations and networking clubs. Call past graduates, current students and friends and family members as well. You never know who may be able to help.” Roush even prompts graduates to do volunteer work with an eye toward networking prospects. “Keep a copy of your resume in the car,” she says. “The person volunteering next to you may be on the board of a company you’re interested in. Talk to everyone -- neighbors, people at church. Someone may be hiring for a company in your field.” Sell Your Best Attributes Some college graduates have little experience in the field they want to enter, while older applicants have concerns about competing with the young. “Both have good things to offer,” says Roush. “The younger graduates can sell enthusiasm and eagerness to work hard. Older graduates offer maturity and skills that go with the workforce.” “I remind everyone that Charlotte’s Web was rejected 30 times before it was published. Many successful people go through hardships. I use inspirational stories to show that anything is possible,” Roush says. “It helps college graduates feel better, build confidence, and it helps with interview skills.” With a mind for detail, and a concise “elevator pitch” about yourself, finding employment can become a systematic process that lands your job. (ARA) - Facing the prospect of a layoff amidst the economic downturn, many jobseekers find themselves on the defensive. Some employees have found that they must distinguish themselves in their current profession, while others have decided to change fields altogether, looking to promising new industries such as health, technology and other growing areas. In response, educational and career training institutions have had to expand to meet growing demand for career training. Criminal justice instructor Carol Sciannameo at Everest University in Largo, Fla., explains that a large number of jobseekers are returning to school, despite the recession. “Even though you might think that the recession makes higher education less affordable, we have actually seen increases in our enrollments despite economic difficulties,” he says. Sciannameo explains that students of all ages understand that education is an investment in their future. Much of the growth in career education comes from workers who are seeking specialized skills or certifications needed to get a raise or promotion. Others simply want to keep their skills upto-date in the face of changing technologies. And for others interested in entering a new career, a bachelor’s degree is now necessary,

12

when once an associate degree or on-the-job training would do. Long-term employment trends confirm students’ perceptions that higher education is more important today than ever before. In fact, a 2006 Department of Education report finds that jobs that require only on-the-job training are expected to see the greatest decline. In contrast, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports more than 90 percent of the fastest-growing jobs require individuals to have some form of post-secondary education. According to a July 2008 study by the National Center for Educational Statistics, the most common areas of study for adult work-related coursework are health, business, trades and computer technology. The report finds that 35 percent of adult students participating in career-related coursework took courses in business and 32 percent in health. Many higher education institutions are rushing to fill this demand. The NCES reports that in 2005, more post-secondary institutions offered coursework in the field of health care than any other field, with 3,700 institutions offering career programs in health care.

www.757pages.net

Business and marketing was the second most common field, with 3,500 institutions offering business programs. The focus on upgrading skills has meant that more adults are going to school than ever before, in all fields. Many educational institutions are trying to meet the unique demands of non-traditional students, by offering fast-track programs, night classes and online educational programs. With the growth of adult education, many institutions have tried to work around students’ busy lives. Students can often complete degree programs in a matter of months, as opposed to the years it takes to complete a bachelor’s degree, which helps account for the emergence of more career-training institutions and the explosion of online education. While most of the research on higher education tends to focus narrowly on universities, the 2008 NCES study reported that of all career-related credentials granted in 2005, a full 21 percent were associate degrees, and 36 percent were certificates from career-training institutions. And 13 percent of the career-related certificates came from career training institutions with programs shorter than two years. Despite the additional time and cost needed upfront, research shows that higher education tends to benefit individuals who invest the needed time and effort. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that while a high school graduate on average earns about $1.2 million over his or her lifetime, an associate degree holder earns about $1.6 million and a bachelor’s degree holder earns about $2.1 million -- almost $1 million more than high school grads. The possibility of increased salary is a powerful motivator for many potential students, even amidst a recession, says online instructor Chris Cozzolino from Everest University Online. “Our students recognize that education truly is the best investment they can make. They are willing to invest the time and effort needed to get a certification or degree that is necessary to find a stable career,” Cozzolino says.

Erica Steele, owner of Essential Wellness Comprehensive Bodywork, articulated to me the analogy of one’s body being akin to a vehicle that drives you to where you want to go in life. You must take care of your vehicle; regularly check the oil, overall inspections, etc. in order to receive continued service. In the same way, you must do that with your body. Going to get physicals, eating healthy, and exercise. Consider adding medical massage therapy to your list of diagnostic proce-

dures. Medical massage brings holistic health and wellness to every system of the body ensuring a life free of pain and discomfort. Not only does it relieve the pain you currently may have, but it also prevents any new flare-ups from occurring. Essential Wellness is the only medical massage therapy center in Hampton Roads. They specialize in pain management, trauma, accident, injury recovery, but also work with patients for preventative needs. Mirroring their tag line, “Patient-Focused Holistic Health Care & Wellness Center,” their mission statement reads, “to provide bodywork, mentorship, education, and inspiration”. Their underlying philosophy is that our bodies are interconnected and therefore we should seek to support wholeness in all areas, emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical. I asked Steele why mainstream physicians do not practice massage therapy. Her response was that they simply are not trained in understanding the benefits of medical massage therapy and as a result can only focus on the symptoms of illness and injury. The certified therapists at Essential Wellness dig deeper (no pun intended) to treat the cause of one’s muscular ailment facilitating the removal of the unpleasant, surfaced symptoms. The benefits reach all body systems, increasing blood circulation, bringing fresh oxygenated blood to the injured area, and increasing overall healing time by 50%. Furthermore, medical massage therapy

increases lymph flow for heightened immunity, reducing scarring, pain, edema, soreness, tenderness, and tearing. So, let’s say you walk in or schedule an appointment (preferred) with an Essential Wellness certified therapist…what can you expect? Treatment from long-term start to finish will always be personal. The therapist will begin with a free, 30-minute consultation where they will ask questions concerning past medical history, current lifestyle, and daily activities to properly evaluate your health and put together a custom designed treatment plan. After the first massage, the therapist will perform a post-massage consultation where they will review their findings, show areas of immediate concern, and focus on overall health with an improved vigor. The therapist, if necessary, will recommend a continuing wellness plan with your approval. It’s important the patient stay active in their healing process and want the treatment otherwise it won’t be beneficial. Although patients will recognize a noticeable difference after the first session, four sessions is used as a barometer to reevaluate how far you have come and the direction you should head based on your personal goals. Steele has created an empowering environment from all levels of therapists where they feel respected as health care professionals. As she has built success on a personal level, her business has prospered in return making room to assist new therapist on their journey. In these efforts, she has developed a reputable paid internship program. Interns will work as a therapist for the public under the supervision and mentorship of a certified therapist. Helping to develop and execute treatment plans, as well as learning specific medical massage treatments. They have the benefit of evaluation by both the therapist working with them and the patients they serve. Upon graduation, interns have the

option of moving into the externship program, offering more responsibility and increased compensation. Steele and all therapists at Essential Wellness know alternative medicine scares many away from its overriding benefits due to price. EW has come up with a system to combat this and enable as many persons desiring holistic health to receive treatment. If you have an acute case (meaning you are in pain at the time of treatment) therapists will recommend a weekly treatment plan for $40 per session. In between, you can expect a phone call from your therapist checking up to see how your body is healing making sure you don’t feel alone in your healing process. If you have a chronic situation (a sports injury for example), once every two weeks for $50 per session is recommended. In addition, support groups and educational seminars are available. Finally, for preventative treatment or the occasional treatment, a $60, once a month session is ideal. You can’t trade it in, dump it for a new one, or lease a different model every two years. The body you have is for life and with medical massage therapy can be the vehicle that enables you to live life to the fullest! “Come to Essential Wellness and regain the balance, wholeness, and complete wellness, that is your natural state!” Call today at 757.685.HEAL and visit their website at www.vabeachwellness.com currently all new patients receive 50% off an Introductory Session.

(ARA) - Job No. 1 for the American worker? Better sleep. With so many Americans unemployed -- 5.3 million joined the jobless rolls since 2008 -- there’s increased urgency to stand out from the competition, says Tempur-Pedic wellness advisor John M. McKee, founder and chief executive officer of the international coaching practice BusinessSuccessCoach.net. McKee, a 30-year veteran of corporate boardrooms, executive suites and an expert in career de-

velopment and success, says those trying to combat the longer work days and added stress of the economic downturn need to first focus on getting better sleep at night. More than 90 percent of Americans have experienced a problem at work because of a poor night’s sleep, according to TempurPedic’s 2009 Wellness Survey. One in four admit to shirking duties on the job for the same reason. A good night’s sleep begins with a supportive and comfortable mattress and pillow, like those offered by TempurPedic, but a worry-free bedroom environment is also important for optimal performance. A dark, quiet room free of work-related materials and distractions like a TV or computer is critical for sound, quality sleep.

(ARA) - The economic downturn in the United States has caused major job losses in recent months. With more applicants seeking fewer jobs, it becomes increasingly important to do more than simply “dust off” your resume. Anthony Davis, director of career services at Brown Mackie College in Fort Wayne, Ind. offers advice to help those now seeking employment. “If a worker has been laid off, the first priority is survival! Pay the bills, feed the kids, and hope that no major medical expenses come during this time,” he says. He goes on to offer these insightful tips: 1. Escape your own paradigm. “We tend to get locked into one view of ourselves. It can be helpful to consider re-inventing yourself before applying for any positions,” says Davis. “Before updating your resume, consider what skills and abilities you have that can transfer to your job search.”

“The priority in evaluating yourself should be to become aware of your skill base,” says Davis. “It requires introspection to identify both hard and soft skills.” Hard skills are demonstrable, measureable abilities. They include proficiency in working with different computer programs, or the number of years of experience. Soft skills are intangible. They include interpersonal skills, and critical thinking -- skills that are difficult to measure, but ones that can be included in a resume and mentioned during interviews. “For example, someone who worked as a food server could list sales skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task. This can open whole new areas of prospective employment. People don’t readily think of their own assets this way,” Davis says. “Look at yourself as a total person. What hobbies do you have? What sports do you play? What skills have you picked up CONTINUED ON PAGE 27

(ARA) - In this economic environment, everyone is looking for resourceful ways to decrease spending and save money. This is especially true for small business owners, as they look to reduce expenses, take advantage of discounts, increase cash flow and in turn, improve their business’s bottom line. Here are several resourceful and creative ways that small business owners can save money as they navigate today’s economy. * Barter While bartering may sound a little old fashioned, it’s a great way to work out deals between businesses and save cash. For example, if you are a paper supply company, barter to provide a printing company with all their paper needs in return for free copies. If you are a graphic designer looking for an accountant, offer your creative design expertise in return for sound financial advice. Through bartering, you can work out deals that are beneficial to you and the businesses you partner with. In addition, be proactive in your efforts to enhance existing business relationships in terms of operating expenses, etc. In tough times, many companies are willing to work out deals to retain your business. * Save

names such as Staples.com, HomeDepot.com, Walmart.com, and Costco.com, where small business customers spent the most money in 2008. “Small business owners make frequent purchases from these retailers as they manage their day-today business needs,” says John Durrant, Bank of America Small Business Strategy Executive. “By shopping online through the Add It Up portal, small business owners can potentially save over $1,000 a year -- that’s a savings of more than $80 a month, which could equal the money you spend on gas to visit clients, or monthly shipping expenses.” * Evaluate Expenses Take this time to reevaluate all of the annual service contracts that your business currently has in place. You may no longer need the comprehensive and often costly full-service phone plan because you use your cell phone to make most business calls. You may also consider getting rid of your traditional fax machine and utilize free online faxing Web sites in its place. Other items to evaluate include changing over traditional, printed company newsletters and mailings to paperless communications, as this can reduce your yearly business expenses for paper, ink, and printing. Savings that seem small in the short term can help make your company profitable in the long run.

Take advantage of programs designed to help you save money on everyday business necessities, such as office supplies and computers. Bank of America recently * Network launched an online shopping portal called Add It Up where small business owners Through networking, small business can earn up to 20 percent cash back from owners can learn how their peers and more than 270 retailers when they shop fellow entrepreneurs in the local business online with their Bank of America check community are navigating their business card. Participating retailers include top through the current economy. Many onwww.757pages.net

26

line networking sites, like Bank of America’s Small Business Online Community, are free to join, provide expert content and the opportunity for small business owners to get immediate feedback. To get some offline face time with colleagues and peers, find out if your local chamber of commerce hosts networking events that you can attend to meet small business owners in your area. Tapping into the experience of your small business peers is a great way to gain additional savings tips. * Promote Advertising is a good investment for business dollars, but keep in mind that you don’t always have to spend big bucks to conduct a successful advertising campaign. Consider advertising through an e-newsletter or a series of e-mail marketing campaigns. These online techniques are usually less expensive and allow you to target specific customers. If you want to continue with direct mail, be sure to cull down your mailing list and eliminate any customers you haven’t heard from in a while. Or, consider slipping advertising materials and coupons into items you are already mailing out, such as invoices. * Travel In this current economic environment, eliminating any business travel that isn’t absolutely necessary can save small business owners a great deal of money. In place of traveling to see customers and clients, plan weekly meetings using free Web or phone conferencing applications. If you must take a business trip, try to plan ahead and do your homework. A little researching for a less expensive flight or hotel can go a long way and save big money. through life that you can transfer and apply to an occupation?” 2. Keep your expectations high, but realistic. “We’re in recession. Those who love to eat steak may need to consider hamburger,” Davis says. “What’s available in your labor market right now?” He recommends considering work values in addition to money. “Values change based upon life circumstances. It’s not just a one-time process. People change with age and circumstance,” says Davis. Are you looking for authority on the job, or do you prefer to work alone? Is creativity important to you? As Davis points out, “Living true to your work values equals work rewards.” He emphasizes the importance of matching prospective career fields, and employers, with your own work values. “Don’t make yourself out to be something you’re not,” he says. “Be truthful. You may sell something else to land the job, but you won’t be able to maintain it. It’s OK to say ‘No’ to an employer based on values.” 3. Do your research. “Research everything. Look into the category, the prospective employer, and your local labor market,” says Davis. “Consider where you live and where you are willing to work. Read projected outlooks from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and talk with others in the field. Find out what qualities you need to cultivate to be a good prospect.” In summary, Davis points out, “If the old saying ‘you get what you put into it’ holds true, then if you put four hours per week in your job search or career change, you should find yourself a great four-hour-a-week job. Keep the faith in yourself and give it your all. Make finding your next position a full-time job.” Courtesy of ARAcontent

Some people can’t hear music without tapping their foot or bobbing their head. Certain people feel the music deep down to their core, and you can see it all over them that they love it. Tony Monk is one of these people. On a Saturday afternoon with black curtains blocking the light from outside, Monk’s Virginia Beach studio is filled with people and music. Beats from a set of congas fill the air as someone strikes a B flat on a keyboard, while a bassist strums themselves into tune in the background. Divine Measure, a Christian go-go band, is recording. The group, which consist of a keyboardist, drummer, conga player, several vocalist and a rapper, is just one of the groups Monk lends his expertise to. A songwriter, beat maker, producer, recorder and publisher; no style of music is taboo for Monk. He has worked on hip-hop beats to rap, R & B to pop, Latin infused Caribbean music to country songs and so. With his company Monastery Music Publishing and Recording Studio, Monk has plans to cement Virginia’s recognition as a hotbed for entertainment. Monk, who has been performing musically since the 4th grade, has always had a desire to work in the music industry. Monk and four other guys performed “Cool It Now”, by New Edition while in the Air Force, with Monk singing the part of Ralph. While attending Norfolk State University, he majored in music media, but knew

little about the technical side of making music when he started. “Someone could have asked me to find middle C on a piano and I couldn’t do it,” explained Monk. But what Monk did know how to do was make music, and his time spent at NSU only enhanced the musical knowledge and abilities he already had. Knowledge and abilities he now puts to use in his studio; which opened this past July. The recording process starts with an artist calling to make an appointment, after which they put down an initial deposit as they visit to take a tour of the studio; making time to discuss a particular sound they would like, the type of instruments they want to use and the set up they would like. The minimum length of a session is four hours and the artist leaves with a copy of the music. “One time I had a session last from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. the next morning,” said Monk. Monk’s studio is filled with many tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, instruments and software so thorough he can tweak the exact pitch of any sound or vocals. He even boast a keyboard that is only one of two of its kind in Virginia. “Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes has the other one,” Monk explained, “He had to special order it from Guitar Center because I bought the first one on display

from Audio,Light and Musical. Monk’s life wasn’t always so arranged. For three years on and off from 20032006 and many times before, he was homeless on the streets of Norfolk. At the time Monk only had three pairs of pants and five shirts. “I even had holes in my only pair of shoes,” Monk recalls. He explains how he used to beg at restaurants for food, iron his clothes on the floors of bathrooms and would sneak into those same bathrooms in hotels in Norfolk to sleep underneath the banquet tables. Then one day he heard the of voice of God telling him to start double tithing. A tithe is a tenth of a persons income that’s given to a church, double tithing would be giving 20 percent. For Monk, every time he was given or found money he would double tithe to a church. “Whenever you are in financial trouble the best way to deal with it is to give your way out of it,” stated Monk. Monk explains that it’s because of his faith in 2006, that he was able to go from homeless and on the street to living in shelters, to a small, cold and damp room for rent that needed buckets to catch water leaks from the roof. The landlady moved him in with no job, no deposit or first months rent or no immediate idea of a job coming. All because Monk was double-tithing any money he had, God made a way out of no way. Then from there Monk was able to move into two hotels for six weeks apiece all from a christian paying the weekly rent at one hotel

30

at $250.00 a week, and the second hotel at $400.00 a week. Because there is a law in Norfolk, a individual cannot live in a hotel for more than six weeks at one time. Because any time after that, it then becomes their home or a permanent residence. Monk then moved to an apartment for sixteen months at $700.00 a month amongst other monthly bills and a spirit-filled individual payed that as well for Monk. He moved to another apartment for a year at about the same rent and now has a house in Virginia Beach. God made all this possible because Monk decided to hear God’s voice and double-tithe. Monk attributes his success from following the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, the BIBLE. It’s from this faith that Monastery Music Publishing and Recording Studio was born. This is just the first step however, Monk has plans of creating the first ever recording studio franchise. He also has plans of starting two radio stations; one will play gospel music of all genres all the time, and the other would play sermons from prominent preachers 24-hours daily, which has never been done in radio broadcast history. “The word just can’t be preached on Sunday mornings,” said Monk. But Monk has no intention of stopping with music. Not only does he want to build up Monastery Music Publishing and Recording Studio, but Virginia as a whole. Ultimately he wants to bring Hollywood to the

east coast and establish it here in Hampton Roads. To do this he had plans to start Monastery Television Corporation, which will be an 18 hour daily television station that will focus on family and children based shows; consisting of food, health and fitness shows as well as Gospel concerts. Monk then plans to conquer the big screen by starting Monastery Motion Pictures Production Corporation and move to the stage with Monastery Opera, Ballet and Stage Play Theater. “Our country started here in Virginia, so lets bring it all back,” explained Monk. He advises, “You have to be persistent, do one thing and do it well before branching out to other skills, know your limitations and always be about business,”. Monk remembers while homeless, people said his goals were something he could never reach. However, with his faith in God and love of music, Monk has proof in Monastery Music Publishing and Recording Studio they’ve already began to come true and he has no intention of stopping now. Even in a wavering economy, there will continue to be dirty cars and a need for drivers to clean them. Donald White is putting a new spin on the traditional car wash: Mobile detailing. The business offers services such as washing, waxing, scratch removal, cleaning and conditioning leather, and engine cleaning for individuals and commercial organizations alike. It is easy to schedule into the day because they come to you. Prior to owning Jireh Detailing, White’s warehouse position simply was not making ends meet. He realized the only way to control one’s own destiny was to become one’s own boss. The idea for mobile detailing came from a co-worker. White recognized its potential and jumped on it. Locals involved in the business took him in and gave him skills and knowledge he needed to make this plan succeed. God took care of the monetary logistics of starting up the business. One day while visiting a friend at work, a piece of their equipment fell on his ankle causing White to miss many days of work. Instead of suing his friend’s company, his insurance worked out an agreeable compensation, which ended up to be the amount White needed to get the business going. More importantly White says, this act of generosity portrayed how Christ makes a practical difference in one’s life. Both his friend and his friend’s wife accepted Christ because of White’s witness. “Seek ye the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these other things shall be added unto you. I was blessed because I was faithful,” White attributes. Faith continues to play a key role in Jireh Detailing. It “is a ministry, place of healing; it’s more of a ministry than a business,” describes White. The name, “Jireh Detailing,” came from one of the names of God, “Jehovah Jireh,” meaning, “Provider”. White wanted to demonstrate his business has the ability to provide, not just a detailing service, but healing from past mistakes. “You can recuperate from decisions you make…when you get in a hole there’s always a ladder where you can climb out, even if it takes awhile,” advises White. His own testimony is, 17 years ago he was struggling with many different adversities, “I remember being in my car and my girlfriend (now wife) [and she] decided she had had enough, I told her, ‘its probably best that you leave because I’m not any good for you or your son’. I said, ‘Lord I’ve tried everything to overcome these problems and I would trade in everything if you change me’. I was willing to trade in everything that was important to me for new life and I’ve been fine ever since. I’ve been married for 16 years and I have three children and its all due to the grace of God”. One of the greatest advantages to being self-employed is the ability to choose who you want to work with. Due to his position, White has been able to see potential others have missed in individuals. He looks for those who have drive to excel not just receive a paycheck. He would rather “have someone come here and get healed and take what they’ve learned out into the real world. This is a place of healing. You get encouraged and ministered to.” The greatest challenge is getting new employees to see beyond their circumstances, a process that requires a great deal of patience, but Jireh Detailing’s success rate motivates them to keep going. Jireh Detailing empowers its employees by creating an atmosphere for business owners because they do not want employees to stay at that level but become contractors earning 60-70% of the job under the Jireh Detailing umbrella. White realizes from his own experience it is more exciting to own one’s own business than to work for someone else. He hopes to bring people together to own and operate their own businesses. White believes, “Jireh Detailing can grow in ways we could have never imagined”. cotact info: 757.681.2403

Speaking of a recent hospital stay only made the scripture Proverbs 18:21 real to me. “Death and Life are in the power of the tongue.” With the joy of the Lord being my only strength while I was unable to speak life, God chose life for me as He divinely cultivated my future destiny.

The heavens declare my glory and the earth is His footstool. I thank God for everything He is doing in my life. I always had a desire to motivate others to reach their full potentials in life, through hard obstacles, trials and tribulations, I still believed God. My vision is to be a motionvational speaker reaching the Broken, Bruised and Battered women and men through the word of God throughout the world. Once being called a throw away only made me realizes that God “specializes” in the mis-haps, mis-fortunes and the broken-hearted. I asked God, if it’s anything that He can use of me Lord- Use Me and God is doing just that. Often times, I feel like a woman at the well, so as I pronounce the benediction on my past which required me to forgive someone whom I had failed to forgive: Myself. Then the Lord spoke to me and said “write the vision and make it plain.” So I was compelled to birth REHMA Ministries to rightly divide the word of God, for my people perish for the lack of knowledge through imperfection as God perfected me through vision that everyone is Deemed Qualified to receive God’s love. According to Psalm 23 it let’s us know that the Lord is our Shepherd and while going through your transitional state the Lord is guiding you in your darkest hour to lead you through the shadows of your dismay days while passing through your hurt, shame, quilt, accusations, rumors, lies and persecution, there is Green Pastures on the other side. Galatians 6:9 “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

34

I am a firm believer, God will make room for your gifts, I ask God everyday to expand my horizons and to enlarge my territory, It’s all according to your faith, as far as you can see it, it is yours for the asking. Who said you can’t have it, upon the release of my first book (TBA). God has increased my faith and given me the power to command Demons to drop their weapons and flee out of the will and the work of the Lord. My company is no longer hanging around negative people nor do I accept it. People will always have negative words about you whether you do good or bad, you are only effected by what you allow to control you and render you helpless and powerless. God is Sovereign –Flavor isn’t Fair! God said we have not because we ask not, now my everyday walk with God is; Father, I thank you for allowing me to posses that which I desire. Psalm 126:5 “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.” As I turn ditch-digging folks over to God, He allows me to know “as much as you have done it unto the least of them you have done it unto me.”“Vengeance” is mine said the Lord. I want to let people know that it doesn’t matter what you have done or what the world think you did or where you have been, God will recover, rebuild and restore that which was lost. Your destiny is in the hands of the Beholder-Christ Jesus. When you have the determination and perseverance it creates an atmosphere according to Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing shall be impossible” Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. I have come this Far by Faith leading and depending on God.

(ARA) – At this time of year, it seems people are taking more pictures than ever. Another school year is wrapping up -- there are graduations, proms and sporting events. And don’t forget about summer holidays, family vacations, reunions and weddings. Without a doubt, the digital camera has made it easier than ever for anyone to capture hundreds -- even thousands -- of pictures of these cherished moments. But this modern marvel of technology has been both a blessing and a curse. We all take pictures that mean something to us, but then what happens? Weeks, months, even years go by and those same pictures are all but forgotten, held hostage in a camera, buried on a computer hard drive or lost in cyberspace. Then, when the time comes to share those photos, it seems they’re nowhere to be found. Some people still make their own prints, but that only solves part of the problem. Maybe you put one or two on the refrigerator, but what about the rest? Off to the shoebox they go with the forgotten promise that, “One day I’ll get them in a book.” If you can relate to this, you’re not alone. There are other options to help you turn your digital photos into lasting memories. First off, you’ll want to spend a bit of time finding out what you have to work with. If you’re buried in digital photos, start by paring down your photo library by deleting those you don’t like or need. Next, set up a file system and get in the habit of naming your photos as soon as you download them to your computer. Be consistent with your naming conventions to stay extra organized. For example, for all photos related to a specific event, begin your naming scheme with the same word (such as reunion). Finally, back up your files to ensure that nothing gets lost. If you’re drowning in a sea of shoeboxes

packed with prints, it’s time to get organized. Start by putting the photos into large acidfree envelopes or boxes, marked with the year. Discard the photos you don’t like or don’t want to keep. Next, decide which photos you want to scan and set them aside. Scanning is a great way to preserve older photographs and to make copies of the more current pictures you will want to keep forever. Don’t have a scanner? Send your photos to a service like Jostens Image Scan where they process your photos for you at a reasonable price. Once your images are organized, why not make the memories permanent and published? Jostens Photo Memory Books at OurHubbub. com are a great way for you to share your most memorable stories by creating your own hardcover photo memory books. With more than 150 designs and a myriad of custom covers, there’s a look and feel for just about any story, season or occasion. Parents can delight their child’s favorite teacher with the ultimate yearend gift, or make the perfect memory book for the graduate. Students can score points with a great gift for parents, capture the fun of prom night, or celebrate the team’s big season. If you’ve got pictures, a Jostens Photo Memory Book will help you turn them into a keepsake that you will treasure forever. Forget the cost of all those new ink jet cartridges and photo paper for your printer, not to mention costly scrapbook materials. Jostens’ photo memory books start at just $34.99 for a 22-page book -- saving you money and time. Plus, you’ll finally be able to show off your pictures and stories in a published coffee table book for your family and friends to see and not be forgotten. The fresh smell of hair product flooded my nose and my ears picked up the soft low hum from the row of hairdryers currently in use. Conversation mixed with laughter rang out in English and Spanish all throughout the salon. I continued to take in the multitude of leather seats, the antique-styled gold mirrors at each well-stocked hairdressing station, and the overall inviting atmosphere. After introducing myself to the receptionist it was not long until I had the privilege to sit down with the owner of this impressive establishment.

how many customers she would actually serve. To her overwhelming surprise, more people showed up on just the first day than she had expected. “The support from the community was overwhelming,” said Reyes. This year as they celebrate their one-year anniversary, the same affirmation remains the foundation of Quisqueya Salon. With spring blossoming into view, Quisqueya is more than equipped to offer a fresh look to enhance your natural beauty. They carry a range of products, Alter Ego, Ecoline, Alpha Parf, Paul Mitchell, and Joico (just to name a few) for any hair type and desired improvement (curl enhancement, sleek and shiny, color treated, anti-breakage, etc.). Furthermore, while their stylists specialize in straight and silky blowdry techniques, these professionals prove excellent in cuts, colors, perms, relaxers, and updos as well.

highly acclaimed soul food. The Navy stationed Herman during his 20-year career and Renee was pursuing her own in hotel management. When Herman retired, he decided to follow another interest…cooking. Renee incorporated her love of working with people and Tropical Delight opened on October 17, 1999. The Garrisons attribute this feat to their hard-working, “go-getter” attitude. “Don’t let anything stop you from what you’re doing in life,” Renee said. They have since remodeled the restaurant, open Sundays 7pm-1am, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 5pm-2am, and Thursdays 7pm-2:30am, to offer take out and catering. Their services have extended as large as State Farm conventions, Norfolk State half-time refreshments, Masonic events, but as intimate as banquets and house dinner parties. They can be booked at 757.366.9855 given two weeks to 30 days in advance depending on event size. Reserve the date of October 17th, 2009! Tropical Delight is commemorating their 10-year anniversary and you are invited to join in the festivities. You can anticipate live music, free food, and prizes! Tropical Delight strives to take care of their customers, offering a free buffet Friday evenings from 6-8pm full of their famous chicken wings, ribs, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, green beans, and corn with the purchase of two drinks. “The economy’s bad. People don’t have anything to eat. People don’t have money,” sympathized Renee. On a couple different instances the customers could not afford the drinks, “but I just told them to come on in and sit on down,” recalls Renee. No wonder Tropical Delight has successfully made it to their 10-year anniversary. For their commitment to good food in a relaxed atmosphere but perhaps more importantly for their concern for each person who walks through their doors, it is time to celebrate!

In harsh economic times, fashion is a luxury often sacrificed to save money. Even with many boutiques and department stores advertising sales, it is difficult to justify spending money on clothing when the cost of food and living is rising steeply. This is why now, more than ever, is the time to get creative and make do with what we already have in our closets. With inexpensive additions and easy adjustments to items currently in your wardrobe, you can refresh your clothing without emptying your wallet. Jennifer Shaw, senior design director for the Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. brand offers these simple solutions for spicing up your wardrobe on a budget: Closet Dive Pull out old tops, sweaters and blazers you haven’t worn in a while and work them back into your wardrobe rotation. Fashion is cyclical, and you never know when something will come back in style again. Add Accessories Inexpensive costume jewelry adds sparkle to a basic black top. Try colorful statement necklaces -- the bigger the better -- in bright colors or naturals like cork or wood. Funky vintage brooches and bauble rings also steal the show. Belt it Out Clothes too big and baggy? Change the shape of a frumpy old sweater by adding a thin belt around your waist. This will liven up the sweater while complimenting your figure.

Layer it On Extend the life of a summery blouse or sundress throughout the year by layering a cardigan sweater on top and opaque tights or skinny jeans underneath. Pairing with leather boots and a patterned scarf will also help change the season of your summer clothes while still keeping you warm. My Boyfriend’s Back Borrow clothes from the man in your life for a fresh look that is comfortably slouchy and undeniably sexy. Pair a men’s v-neck undershirt with cuffed jeans and a chunky necklace for an ultrafeminine accent. Head-to-Toe Chic Forget your flats, wearing a cute pair of shoes with a small or medium height heel will instantly lengthen the leg, flatter your figure and add style and glamour to any outfit. “The key to lasting style is to start with a fitted, basic pair of jeans in a clean, dark wash,” Shaw says. “Jeans with a boot-cut leg opening look great on all different body types and the cut is classic and timeless. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. jeans are fashionable, comfortable and best of all -- affordable.” Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. jeans are available at Walmart and Kmart stores and online for women, men and kids. All styles retail for under $25. Visit www.signaturebylevistrauss.com for more information.

At 1517 Lynnhaven Parkway is a miniature replica of the greater American melting pot. For the past ten years, Extreme Cuts & Style Barbershop’s clientele have represented numerous ethnicities such as, Spanish, Mexican, Columbian, Philippine, and Caucasian (just to name a few). The range of techniques and personal styles utilized by the Extreme Cuts & Style barbers allows for equal demand of varied requests. These stylists know every ethnicity, and

48

more specifically, every individual who is part of that ethnicity, will have a different hair texture, need, and preference. The professionalism and genuine concern of each barber meets this challenge every time. However, the barbers at Extreme Cuts & Style model more than the best haircuts and latest trends, they demonstrate the rewarding life that comes with a good reputation based on consistently doing one’s best and helping others.

www.757pages.net

The motto of Extreme Cuts & Style seems to be, “Do great work and be good to people”. As the barbers have practiced this day in and day out they simultaneously have created a relaxed, safe, comfortable, and family-friendly atmosphere. While the business has grown over the years, this original goal, set by entrepreneur, Jose (“Maneco”) Rivera, has not changed since he took over the shop. Admittedly, it was tough at the beginning to transform a shop previously concerned only with making money to the inviting “community center” it is today. Now, “we’re always talking, about family, our kids…we help people out this way”. Barbers take the time to get to know each client and what has been going on in their lives, all while providing customized services. For this reason, they do not have a set price list, but charge based on the client’s specific wishes, nothing more, nothing less. Some of their customary services include, beard design, hairstyles, short haircuts (for females too), and eyebrows. Owner, Maneco, grew up in Pennsylvania where he learned to cut hair from the Spanish community. They demanded very “clean and picky” haircut“…very picky,” Maneco chuckled, but that strict training enabled him to do what he does today and for that he is grateful. Primarily, Maneco wishes to thank God for leading him through life and for all the blessings he has today. In addition, he would like to say, “thanks a lot,” to Yiyi, a “little corner in Virginia Beach” who changed his life. Although he was not a “bad guy”, he did not care much about his life. Yiyi showed him “how good life can be and how important it is.” From her example and encouragement, Maneco changed his whole life and now wants to renovate the barber industry and start chain shops, beginning in the Hampton Roads area. “She made me see the world differently. That’s why I love her a lot.”

Take a pair of yard sale clippers, add some parental encouragement, combine “training from the streets” with formal cosmetology school, and a broad range of work experience in salons and barbershops both in the US and abroad in Puerto Rico, and you come out with the condensed version of Maneco’s history. Now, with kids of his own whom he “loves with all my heart,” he is actively refining Extreme Cuts & Style Barbershop to serve best the individuals and families of all ethnicities in the Hampton Roads area. Whether by appointment or walk in, Extreme Cuts & Style is available to all persons and people groups Monday-Saturday 9am-7pm and Saturdays from 10am-6pm. Contact: 757-368-2889

It never fails, whether you are about to interview for a job or have just been let go, whether you are celebrating a relationship milestone or getting over a break up, whether you are embracing a new beginning or closing a season of life, a simple hair cut can dramatically alter a person’s entire demeanor and attitude concerning the situation. At Loxidonta’ Hair Studio, owner Donna Lee believes giving someone hair care is giving them an improved look as well as confidence and a healthy boost to their self esteem. “A hair cut makes a difference in a person’s life,” she claims. Sitting in a class at Tidewater Community College as a Criminal Justice major, Lee found herself asking, “What am I doing here?” It was this question that propelled her into the beauty industry. Her journey commenced at Wards Corner Beauty Academy. It was not an easy endeavor. Several medical complications slowed her progress, but she endured thanks to God-given strength to continue in pursuit of her dream. In 2003 she graduated and opened her first salon. Since then, she has learned much by managing salons, but found the most pleasure when she was running her own.

52

Now, as of June 1, 2009, the grand opening of Loxidonta Hair Studio begins another chapter to her continued goal of quality service and hair care instruction for every client. Clients are the center of Loxidonta Hair Studio. Lee has focused their services around healthy hair care. The five stylists and three barbers she employs are a wealth of knowledge and capable of explaining comprehensive steps for clients to strengthen, grow, and overall restore their hair to a healthy, manageable state. Clients are welcome to come in Monday- Saturday 9:00am- 9:00pm. Lee has a special desire to mentor up and coming stylists by providing them with hands on experience in her own shop. Community service is a core value at Loxidonta Hair Studio. It’s a regular occurrence for persons unable to pay for a full price hair cut to walk away having received one for free. As the studio becomes established, community involvement is the area Lee hopes to increase first. In the meantime, she would like to thank her stylists (Dominica R. Exhem, Tiffany Carter, Ke’von Woods, Antoine Green (Barber and Stylist), Master Barber Shawn Singleton, and Barber DJ Big Row for their dedication to hard work, their loyalty, and embracing the studio’s goals. In addition, she would like to acknowledge her late mother (Patricia E. Smith) of 16 years, who was not in the beauty industry, but passed on her creative talent, a talent Lee is growing through her work and vision at Loxidonta Hair Studio.

(ARA) - Warm weather is here and it’s time to update your beauty routine for summer. Why not take some inspiration from warm weather’s renewal theme and refresh your beauty regimen? The welcome change in seasons brings longer days, trees and flowers in bloom and more time spent outside. Nature has so much to offer, including inspiration for products that can help you look and feel beautiful from head to toe. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choices with so many new products on the market,” says Jeni Thomas, a beauty scientist with Procter & Gamble. “It can be difficult to know which products really work and which natural ingredients can be effective elements of your beauty routine. The key to finding natureinspired products that do work is to look for ones that blend and balance nature with science.” Seeking out products that combine the best of ingredients with the best of science gives you nature-inspired options that really perform and keep you looking your best. While many new beauty manufacturers may be unfamiliar to you, some of the most highly recognized and respected cosmetics brands are now offering nature-inspired products. Consumers often gravitate toward these brands because they are recognized,

56

trusted, and easily available. Here is a sampling of nature-inspired products from brand names you recognize and that you’ll easily find on your local supermarket or drug store shelves: * CoverGirl now offers TruBlend MicroMinerals foundation, designed to fine-tune mineral coverage from sheer to full. The product incorporates iron oxides, minerals that give nice even coverage to skin, as well as pearl and mica to give skin a luminous, healthy glow. * Hair color goes nature-inspired with Clairol’s Natural Instincts line. Like other Clairol products, the hair color blends away gray in just 10 minutes, but relies on an antioxidant-rich, ammonia-free formula with vitamins C and E to accomplish healthy-looking color and shine. * Consumers know and trust the name Olay. Now the company has introduced a Botanical Fusion Body Wash formulated with scents and ingredients inspired by nature, such as patchouli, rosemary and ginger. The wash incorporates these invigorating scents with hydrating and skin-nurturing ingredients.

* The Cassia plant, a botanical science discovery that helps give hair radiance, softness and strength, is the key ingredient in Pantene Pro-V’s new Nature Fusion shampoo. “Consumers looking for natureinspired products no longer have to search specialty shops or the Internet to find the effective products they crave,” Thomas says. “Some of the most recognized names in health and beauty are responding to consumer demand with effective, cost-conscious, nature-inspired products.” To learn more about nature-inspired beauty products, visit www.pgbeautyscience.com.

After completing her time in the U.S Navy, Sharon Oldham had some decisions to make as she reentered civilian life. Her husband, Tony, inspired and encouraged her to choose a career allowing her to be her own boss. Beauty school proved itself as the venue to equip her in fulfilling future aspirations. Later, as Oldham contemplated opening her own salon, she faced an important question, “People can go anywhere for their hair care. What makes them come back?” At a time where salons continue to grow in number and popularity as a service choice, this was a vital question. The answer she gave continues to serve as the mission of Mahogany Styles Salon, “I must serve the total woman”. Now, 20 years into the beauty industry, swept up in her flourishing business, it is evident she has found her passion! At Mahogany Styles, it is the desire of all stylists to see their clients stand taller, walk more confidently, and leave happier

60

than when they arrived. Oldham witnesses transformations in women every day from the time they sit down to the time they finish, not just in appearance, but in their spirit. “If you look good, you feel good” and are then able to be a better you, explained Oldham. Her goal is to empower women in who they are as a person; they, in turn, are better mothers, wives, employees, managers, CEOs because they are confident in who they are at their core. A particularly special group of ladies Oldham services are from a local foster care agency. “The girls come and get done whatever they need free of charge. It doesn’t matter, we give whatever they need”. Oldham cherishes this opportunity to speak positive affirmation into their lives. From whatever road you come from, rest assured at Mahogany Styles you will receive customer service at its best.

Oldham highly endorses all professionals working at Mahogany Styles saying, “you can come to any one of them and receive professional hair care services from knowledgeable experts”. For Oldham, this salon signifies more than hair. You “don’t know what people are going through. Hair puts them in the chair, but then I get to offer my heart and ears,” she continued. Maintaining a faithful clientele, Mahogany Styles has developed into a full service salon, offering all types of hair care services, weaves, custom color, infusions, eyelash extensions, manicures, pedicures, and makeup. The underlying factor to Oldham’s success lies in her conviction, “If you put God first, everything else will follow,” and so it has for Mahogany Styles. Contact: 757-495-2200

If you don’t believe that one person can make a difference, then you know Ms. Kennetha Sanderlin. Hair braiding is an ancient art that has found itself at the forefront of hair fashion. In hair fashion, braids represent a unique style with a new attitude that can not be mimicked by any style. As hair braiding journeyed from its ancient roots into the world of cosmetology it was not always considered a professional career for cosmetologist and salon owners. But by the efforts of one Hampton Roads’ leading cosmetologist, Ms. Kennetha Sanderlin, that has all changed.

Ms. Sanderlin is a licensed cosmetologist, designer and master braid instructor with a vast background in the art and science of hair design. As an educator and creative artist in the world of cosmetology, Ms. Sanderlin came across much bias and uniformed knowledge about the treatment and care of natural hair. Instead of just allowing cosmetologist and salon owners to continue uninformed, Ms. Sanderlin initiated the campaign for braiders to have a separate license in the state of Virginia in 2001. After speaking at several cosmetology board meeting, it was suggested that she go directly to legislation with her proposal for hair braiders to become licensed in the state of Virginia. By January 2003, her hard work paid off and braiding hair is now considered a professional career that requires its own curriculum. Today, Ms. Sanderlin is the president of Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding and Natural Hair Care Academy. As the first hair braiding school in the state, she continues to work to promote and establish the professional standards, procedures and training of natural hair stylist and braiders. Male or female, persons of all ages will have a truly enjoyable time at Textures Salon. Why? Because at Textures, you are not a mere customer with an appointment but a valued member of the Textures family. This has been the continued goal of owner, Shaniqua Massenberg when she originally opened the salon, located on LaSalle Avenue in Hampton. The salon is open Monday-Friday from 9am-7pm and Saturdays from 9am-6pm. To set up a visit, call 757.723.HAIR. When Massenberg hires hairstylists she looks for artists with their own unique fashion who deliver their skill in a professional manner. They know from Massenberg’s training when it is time to work, work hard. When it is time to play, play hard, but do not mix the two. The stylists should serve as a role model and source of inspiration for their clients. They listen to the needs of the

client and are able to provide their expert opinion and practiced expertise to enhance the patron’s natural beauty. The charismatic attitudes and creative minds of these professionals allow Textures Salon to cater to its diverse group of clientele. Coming from a family of stylists, Massenberg, was in a sense, destined to join the beauty industry. Growing up, she paid particular attention to her cousin, Barbara Jones Blake who acted as a mentor for her stylists, and made hairstyling appeal as an art form. Massenberg noticed the atmosphere was akin to feeling like, “one big happy family” because of the genuine relationships formed between stylists and clients. Now owning and working in Textures Salon, she strives to provide the same opportunity for herself and her stylists to express themselves in their individual ways and together generate a family environment. “Every day is different. You meet new people from all walks of life. It’s a great way to network,” said Massenberg. She also contributes the financial stability of Textures to the example Blake set for her. “It’s just hair. It will grow”. Ever heard that after a hair cut? This truth holds little relevance to the businessperson with a promotion interview, the college freshman starting a new school, or the prom queen hopeful. If this statement brings back memories of past haircuts and styles, there is a salon dedicated to ease your fears by operating on a strict “honesty is the best policy” motto. The professionals at Hair Facts & Design by Renee take full responsibility for making sure each client leaves looking and feeling better than when they came in. Years of school and experience compel each stylist to suggest a compatible alternative to an ill-fitting style, color, or overall look in order to bring out your natural beauty and inherent positive assets. Be assured, a more attractive and confident individual will leave Hair Facts & Design by Renee than the one who walked in. Renee Holley, a single mother moved to Virginia Beach after completing her license in cosmetology at Wards Corner Beauty Academy in Norfolk. She began building a clientele at a local salon and when asked to leave, started what is now Hair Facts & Design by Renee with her faithful clientele. She wishes to primarily thank God for his hand of provision upon her life as well as her mother who pushed and encouraged her dreams and her clients who inspire her to do better and continue to expand the influence of her salon. The salon is open Monday- Friday from 8:00am-2:30pm and Saturdays from 8:00am-6:00pm where both walk-ins and appointments are welcome. The community has given Holley the foundation for her business and she in turn is always looking for innovative ways to give back. Last year she hosted a “Day of Beauty” at the salon and girls who could not ordinarily afford quality hair care, came, free of charge, for back-to-school haircuts. In an effort to rally together the community, she co-sponsored a hair and fashion show at the local library with TJ Maxx and Carlyle Williams (out of Newport News) where 10% of all proceeds went to library funding. In light of the economic recession, Hair Facts & Design by Renee will offer discounts for those working at minimum wage positions this summer. Holley’s underlying mission has always been to stay open in order to support outside goals of serving her surrounding community. When she opened the salon back in 2007, her mission was three parts: First, she offered apprenticeship where students could “earn while they learn”. Second, to be in a business that could open many other doors, and finally, to offer clients knowledge about hair and products right from the salon she managed according to her own preferences. As she has stepped through those opened doors over the past two years, she has grown to love the industry more and more and wants to continue to help people in any way she can. Hair Facts & Design by Renee’s reciprocal honesty policy has allowed Holley to build beneficial relationships and swap constructive criticism, ultimately improving and ensuring her business will be around doing good for many years to come. contact: 757.305.7080

How do you feel about your hair? Do you like it, do you love it, is it your own. Black women, for years have been plagued by feelings about their hair. We have even gone as far as labeling or categorizing hair. For instance the term, “you have good hair.” What exactly is “good hair?” Is it hair that shines, hair that bounces, hair that flows or is it hair that is clean. Ultimetly as black women, we have to reclaim our hair we should love, nurture, and honor our hair, as it is apart of ourselves. We often are always trying to cover up our hair with relaxers, weaves, wigs and an assortment of other scalp accoutrements so that we feel more like a beautiful woman. Can we get to a place where we are comfortable and in love with our hair without the need for additions? Granted being of mixed blood I have what is considered good hair, but realize good hair is not always good. For one, my hair is perfect Afro material. If this were the seventies that would be fierce, but the days of Pam Greer are over or at least revitalized. Being a professional woman, no matter how appealing it may be to let it all go, the reality is that it is important to represent a professional clean-cut image. Secondly, my hair is incredibly soft. So soft, in fact, running fingers through it leads to breakage, tangles and an assortment of other delightful neuances. All of which should not be classified as good, desirable or pretty in any way. And thirdly, water is “good hairs” enemy; swimming, showering, and even hot tub excursions all have to be carefully monitored to ensure complete dryness. Why? Pam Greer couldn’t even make that Afro look good. Ladies please note that “good hair” is indeed not all that good.

There is a stigma that African women should overcome about their hair not being good. I decided about eight years ago to forgo the grief of taming my mane and decided to lock my hair. This was the greatest thing that could happen to my “good hair”, although locking my hair did indeed turn ugly, quick. I lost gobs of my own hair and my hair just did not want to stay locked. For this, I wish I had traditional African hair, the good hair. This would have made my transition smooth and easy. Instead it was anything except, imagine a women fighting with her hair desperately trying to get it to conform. It would have been great if I were blessed with the traditional course strands that held position, as I had needed my hair to so desperately accept. After several jars of bees wax, dog flea combs, and rubber bands I have finally achieved what most black women can easily accomplish, my good hair. I would like to see women of color choose this option as a means to lessen their stress while increase their professionalism in today’s working world. Wearing your hair in a natural style fits any lifestyle. If I am swimming I need not worry, no frizz no fuss. While working out I just put it up in a ponytail with or without a hair band. It’s fun to dress your dreads up or down depending on the occasion. Plus there is no concern about breakage as my whole head is one giant split end. It is convenient, elegant, and beautiful but best of all my hair is my own. No more chemical treatments, relaxers, tingling scalps, fear of water any more. Just long natural hair and now eight years later as my hair is mid way down my back I have people come up to me and ask if this is my hair. I just smile and proudly say yes and I love it!

I have to begin this article with a disclaimer. What is really sexy is a matter of opinion. With that said, I welcome the opportunity to give you mine. Take it from someone who has been on the planet for more years than she cares to remember, sexy is a state of mind. Showing lots of skin and lots of cleavage will certainly get a man’s attention. However, a confident strut coupled with a subtle hip sway while covered from head to toe will get his attention and his respect. (Attention and respect is a great combination). The former may prompt him to invite you in (for example into his bed, a hotel or a back seat). The latter will encourage him to invite you out (in public) without assuming he can invite you in. The latter will also attract a different type of man; one who you can actually talk to. Most women have experienced trying to have a conversation with a man who is leering at you. Frankly, I’d rather converse with a man who is looking me in the eye than one who is staring below my neck or my navel. In business, being too overtly sexy can be a real slippery slope. If you have the sexiness that comes with confidence and self love, it can work in your favor. When a man finds you attractive, he may be more interested in doing business with you. However, if your sexiness takes the form of wearing you blouses down low and your skirts up high he may want to do more than business. If, for example, your legs are your best feature and you want to show them check out Seven Tv @ www.757pages.net off then by all means go for it.

69

Just be very careful about how you conduct yourself. You don’t want a man to think that your body is part of your business contract and you would be amazed at how often that happens. Ladies, I know it’s not fair and it’s not right but it is the world we live in. If someone were to ask me to sum up what is sexy to me in one word, that word would be confidence. A man who knows who he is and is comfortable with who I am will get my attention every time, regardless of how he looks. On the other hand, I have a hard time taking a man seriously when he comes at me crotch first. I don’t find bragging about what you can or will do in bed sexy. Especially when it comes from a man I hardly know. Have you ever met someone who you don’t find physically attractive but there is something about them that is still inexplicably sexy? Sexy is more about how you feel about yourself then how you look, whether you are male or female. There are large people, small people, light people, dark people etc. who love and value themselves. That can make them very sexy. When trying to decide if you want your sex appeal to be overtly over the top or subtlety sensuous, you should ask yourself two questions then carry yourself accordingly: What are you looking for? A man you can look up to in a meaningful relationship or a man you can look up at on a “one night stand?” Do you want to be considered sexy because you are showing as much of your body as possible or because you are fantastic and you know it? Mary J. Blige has a song in which she sings “I’m so sexy, remain a mystery ‘cause everybody always wants what they can’t see and what they can’t have and what they can’t grab and what they can’t buy and baby that’s me!” I’m with Mary J.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of women returning to school,” says Adena E. Johnston, campus dean of DeVry University’s Philadelphia campus. “Degree completion programs are very popular for those who have not finished their education, but we’re also seeing more questions about the bachelor’s programs with an entrepreneurship specialty. Women seem to want to learn more about starting their own businesses or having more flexibility and control over their movement in and out of the workforce.” There’s no arguing that an advanced degree can help mothers improve their employment situation, judging by Bureau of Labor Statistics. The higher an individual’s level of education, the less likely she or he is to be unemployed, according to the bureau. The unemployment rate in 2007 (the latest year for which data is available) for women 25 and older lacking a high school diploma was 8.2 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau. For those with a bachelor’s degree or higher, the unemployment rate drops to about 2 percent. Many working mothers, it seems, now perceive a return to school as not just a dream but a necessity. In an increasingly competi-

72

tive job market, they recognize they can no longer afford to remain in low-paying jobs, or to be the only competitors in the field without a degree. “In 1968, my father advised me I didn’t need a college education. He said all I needed was to get married and take up homemaking,” says Chris Dulaigh-Bates, a 56-year-old medical transcriptionist and mother of two. “I have worked out of my home for the last 17 years, but over the course of the last five years, technology and world trade have eroded away the job security I once enjoyed.” “My future needs a new ending,” she says. “I’m going to school to help rewrite the ending to my story.” Dulaigh-Bates is a DeVry University student who was awarded a full-ride scholarship in 2008 through a special “Project Working Mom” scholarship program for working mothers who wanted to return to school through an online program. For many working mothers, the online nature of the scholarship means they will be able to better fit their education into their busy lives, which already revolve around their children, family and jobs. continued on page 74

continued from page 72 The flexibility of online learning may be contributing to the growing interest among mothers to return to pursuing higher education, Johnston points out. The ability to fit online class schedules into already busy lives means many mothers will be able to better balance work, family and educational obligations. “Online education is the best route for me because sometimes my children with disabilities or special conditions require extensive involvement,” says Sandy Decker, a home daycare provider who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting from DeVry University. “This ability to attend school online will prove critical to my success as a student and allow me the flexibility I need as a mother.” Johnston says schools are seeing an increase in the number of women seeking information, scholarships and degrees in areas deemed recession-proof, like accounting. “Accounting concentrations for undergrad and graduate students are popular as more and more want to be able to have portable skills,” she says. “Working mothers looking to earn a degree should begin to identify their transferable skills, or those skills they bring with them as older adults who have significant life experience,” Johnston advises. “These students are usually motivated and just need encouragement as they move forward with their education.” To learn more about DeVry University and its online degree programs that can help mothers achieve their educational goals while still fulfilling personal and work obligations, visit www. In this article you will discover how anyone can improve there credit fast and easy. It goes without saying that it will take a little effort on your end. You have two things that I will hold you accountable for. The first is you must read this article in it’s entirety. The second is you must take action. With that being said and done let’s begin: The first strategy to repairing your credit is a simple one. You begin the process by obtaining a free copy of your credit report. Please bare in mind that free means free. Do not fall for any of those savvy scammers that claim that their credit report is free then turn around and ask you to provide them with your credit information. With your credit reports in hand you will need to take a mental note of your current credit rating. Armed with this knowledge you now have a clear idea of where you currently stand. From this point your main goal is to raise your credit score to at least 700 points. Take your credit reports and highlight all negative dings. Make sure to pay special attention to errors such as your name, address, job etc... Even the slightest error could effect your credit score. Report all errors to the credit bureaus via a credit dispute letter. I cannot stress enough the importance of this section. You will want to check the dates of ALL of your accounts. You are looking for accounts that are older than seven years. According to the credit consumer law the agencies must remove the accounts in question. REMEMBER IT IS THE LAW AND THEY MUST ABIDE. No time for relaxing. The fight isn’t over yet. It’s time to attack any late payments that you

have on your credit report. Approach each vendor that you have a late payment with and let them know that you are fully prepared to make some sort of payment arrangements. If for some reason the vendor chooses not to work with you, immediately contact the credit bureaus and report the late payment entries as errors. The lender now has to respond within 30 days to any disputes and if they don’t the bureaus are bound by law to remove all accounts from your credit report. It’s time to start paying down your debts. This is crucial if for whatever reason you foresee that you are going to be late paying your debt I highly recommend that you contact the lenders right away. Let the lender know your situation and that you want to workout some sort of payment arrangement. When paying your debts down you should always start with the debt that has the highest interest rate first. If your current budget allows for it I recommend that you pay a little extra instead of the minimum requirements. Within this article you have discovered techniques that have been proven to get you results. If you execute each step to the letter you will drastically improve your credit report. Obviously there is no way for me to tell you everything there is to know about credit repair in this article. For stepby-step instructions you can obtain your own credit repair kit by visiting visit http:// www.a1creditrepairkit.com

(ARA) - Ever wonder what your significant other is doing behind the shower curtain? Curious as to why women consistently take longer showers than men? Whether the toilet seat is left up or down or the toothpaste cap is left on or off -- the differences between men and women’s bathroom habits are undeniable. A recent “Behind the Shower Curtain” study by Water Pik Inc. took a peek at how men and women spend their time in the bathroom, what they value most about their behind-thecurtain experience and the nuances between each gender’s bathroom behaviors. Findings reveal that while a gender divide may exist -- knowledge can be powerful when it comes to conquering bathroom discrepancies between men and women. The survey’s steamiest findings include: * If you thought women were notorious for using all the hot water -- think again. On average, men shower only two minutes less than women (14 minutes for women vs. 12 minutes for men).

check out Seven Tv @ www.757pages.net

83

* While women use shower time to contemplate chores, problems and weight, men spend their shower time thinking about work, sex and day dreams.

pet-peeve relief and shower bliss is within reach. Consider the following shower tips for a better behind-the-shower-curtain experience:

* Although it takes two to tango -- more men (66 percent) than women (55 percent) admit to showering with another adult for intimacy.

* For the men -- Be sensitive to the slightly extended timing of your female counterpart’s showers -- considering she shaves an average of 4.9 minutes per shower and spends more time contemplating her to-do list.

* Despite a growing number of female doit-yourselfers, men are more than twice as likely as women to say they have personally changed a showerhead. * While a relaxing soak in the tub was once in high demand -- only one in 10 women and one in 20 men take baths more often than showers. Sharing a bathroom with an opposite-gendered counterpart can frequently trigger pet-peeve overload. The survey found that toothpaste gobs in the sink ranks in the top two on the list of pet peeves for women, while hair in the drain ranks similarly high on the list of pet peeves for men. While men and women spend plenty of time irritated with each other’s bathroom habits -- it seems they can agree on one thing -- low water pressure is the No. 1 bathroom pet peeve amongst both groups. Surprisingly, an overwhelming majority of both men and women also agree that they would rather pay bills than clean the shower. Though it appears the bathroom gender divide is unavoidable,

84

* For the women -- Appreciate your male’s willingness to change the showerhead -- but also keep in mind that changing a showerhead does not require a plumber and takes just minutes of your time. * Get the water pressure you deserve -- While it might not be so surprising that water pressure is the No. 1 concern in the shower, take time to explore the advanced water technology available today. For instance, the Waterpik brand showerhead line has advanced OptiFLOW technology which delivers up to 30 percent more water force -- even in its low-flow options. * Upgrade your bathroom for less -- Take small steps with big impact -- such as replacing a showerhead. With a vast array of showerheads, spanning traditional to contemporary design -- changing your showerhead can instantly transform the look and feel of your bathroom, without breaking the bank. * Create a spa experience in the shower -While 50 percent of people think it’s a hassle to change modes while showering, it’s easy to elevate your shower experience. Try replacing your showerhead with the Waterpik EasySelect showerhead. It’s the first handheld showerhead that features a fingertip five-mode selector in the handle.

Back-to-school shopping can be an exhausting and expensive experience and many parents start off on the wrong foot before they even get to the store. But there are simple ways to make this annual shopping trip efficient and affordable. According to the National Retail Federation, the average American family spends $385 on school supplies for elementary school students -- the bulk of which is being spent on clothing, electronics, shoes and school supplies. With more families feeling the pinch of the economy, that simply isn’t a feasible amount to spend this year. Follow a few simple tips and you can save money and time. Get a list from your child’s school According to a recent survey from Healthtex Children’s Clothes and Trone, Inc., 39 percent of parents fail to make a list of the back-toschool items they need. Once you’ve got a list, stick to it. Thirty-five percent of parents admit to purchasing school clothing and supplies using the “I see it, I like it, so I buy it” motto, according to the survey. Why buy what your child won’t need? Make a budget According to the same survey, 45 percent of parents do not make a back-to-school shopping budget. Use your list to figure out what you absolutely need and compare with your household budget to determine how

much you can spend. Make it a fun family activity to search out the lowest prices on things you need and give a small prize to the person who saves the most money. Affordable, fun clothing One of the biggest back-to-school expenses are new clothes. Shopping summer sales can be a great way to score bargains on the outfits you need. Kids will outgrow a $40 shirt just as quickly as a $10 shirt, so think affordability and durability. Stick to stylish, durable, age-appropriate clothing that’s always affordable like Healthtex clothes. Each item is only $8. Added savings Buy school supplies like notebooks, paper, pens, binders, scissors and glue in bulk at warehouse stores for extra savings or stock up when the dollar store has them available. Whether you’re shopping online or in the store, use coupons or online coupon codes. You can save hundreds of dollars on the clothing and supplies on your list. Stop before you hit the store Before you even head out the door, “shop” around your house first. You’d be amazed what you can find when you look around in drawers and in the back of your closet. You may even find a bounty of pens and notebooks you’d stocked up on earlier, and then put away and forgotten about.

This was not Lee’s first competition. He has appeared at the Attucks Theater, Berkley Family Reunion, Af’ram, Willet Hall, and with a favorite “old school” group, Blue Magic. Lee’s musical aspirations will take him to New York this summer to participate in the Act-So Program, hoping to return with the title of Top Contemporary Artist of the Year. This coming November, he will travel half way around the world to Japan with The Governor’s School of Arts to take part in yet another competition. Whatever venue and for whomever the audience, Lee is mindful God is the one who granted him this talent and therefore he purposes to “touch people’s hearts and bring people together” and cultivate friendship where there was once hate. www.757pages.net

On March 22, 2009 RoMo Entertainment collaborated with Kountry Boy Records to bring about “A Time To Shine II,” a competition of singers, musicians, dancers, comedians, and hip hop artists. This year, hip hop artist, Charlie Streetz, landed third place and William Andrews (“The Shadow”) followed in second. The first place winner of the 2009 Time To Shine competition was Michael Lee who sang, “Change is Gonna Come,” by Sam Cooke, one of Lee’s personal favorites and tribute to the positive change he foresees coming through America’s new administration. Along with the satisfaction of performing well, Lee also received four free studio recordings and an interview on 103 Jams, 91.1, and CW 27. His reward package rounded out with a Playstation II game system and free photo shoot.

Before there was the performer, upcoming recording artist, and musical competitor, his father and primary role-model, Reginald Lee, remembers hearing an 11 year-old boy singing “My Girl” while driving in their car. It was then he recognized the talent placed in his son. Through a connection brought by Lee’s producer and orchestrated by his father, Lee presently excels under the instruction of K’bana Blaq, an “artist development” agency providing training and image presentation to aspiring musicians. Lee said K’bana, though primarily his voice coach has also become his friend, allowing them to work productively together. The two meet together on Sundays and Thursdays for his training and development as a singer and songwriter. However, Lee attests one cannot make it in the music industry “singing tracks” alone. Therefore, he has taken up both piano and guitar to expand his breadth of skill. Together, they are polishing off Lee’s first single entitled, “Hypnotized,” describing a reality Lee observes daily in the halls of Princess Anne high school. Lee’s father, while actively encouraging his son’s musical gift, also stresses the importance of education. Before Lee begins his daily practice session, he completes all school assignments. His diligence and dedication to music forces Lee to forgo some of the normal extracurricular activities experienced by high school students, but he recognizes these sacrifices are necessary for immediate and long-term goals that lay ahead. As this is his sophomore year, Lee is considering his future plans. He fully intends to make music a vocation declaring, “if you like something, pursue your dream”. Whether in consecutive years or interspersed throughout his career, Lee plans to attend college to pursue higher education. Michael Lee…remember that name, time will only increase its representation of unity and frequency of use in the music industry. check out Seven Tv @ www.757pages.net

THE KING IS GONE BUT HIS MUSIC LIVES ON FOREVER... Words cannot express the sadness that we feel inside when it comes to the passing of Michael Jackson. His name has always put palpitation in our hearts and his music heals our soul. Even without him saying a word he causes fans to go crazy and lose self-control. The king was even more of an icon because of his personality and the love he had for his fans and people in general. What I will miss most outside of his talent, smile and dancing his behind off...lol. Is the excitement he provided me everytime he put out a record, when he was touring or just watching his videos. Michael Jackson is truly the greatest entertainer that ever lived. -K’bana Blaq

“Yes I’m a Pretty Big Deal, Glory to the King He’s the Reason Why I’m Ill.” On one of Hollywood Holly’s line on his track entitled “Big Deal,” he talks about giving honor where honor is due. Hollywood Holly has been in the music game for ten years. He produces songs and owns his record label named Kingdom World Records. He’s been on fire since he dedicated his life to God on April of 2007. Since then he’s been ministering

the Gospel of Jesus in such an artistic form through the very thing that the new generation gravitates to the most...Hip Hop. Hollywood Holly rocked the house at many events. He delivered his first head nodding music at his home church, Kingdom World Outreach Center, where seven souls were transfered to the Kingdom of God. He also ministered at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church 06/16/08, Little Piney Grove 07/27/08, Vision Ministries 08/01/08-08/05/08, Higher Ground Outreach 08/30/08, and I Am Ministries 08/31/08, HCCI Ministries 06/19/09 just to name a few. After several months of hard work, CBF (Christ Boy Fresh) Da Movement Vol.1 is HERE! The album is bold and filled with beats that even the mainstream media is hungry for. He features artists such as Prophet, Onika Flores, Trav Gutta, and Rose D. The 15 track album is lined up with head nodding music with lyrics that can make Christians and non-believers alike want to represent Jesus. The album is available online at CDbaby.com. Thanks for the love. We hope you will enjoy every single track.
