iving all honor to GOD who gives me the strength that I need to make this magazine happen. Without Him none of this is possible.Three years, wow, three years, I cant’ believe that we’ve made it. Its been a lot of work but it has been an awesome learning experience. Lets talk about learning. Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins. This is the reason why I have committed myself to Seven Magazine and Seven TV. When I started this magazine I had no idea what I was doing. I was a salesman, that’s it. One particular issue, 3 years ago, I didn’t have a graphic designer and I had to teach myself how to do graphics. I made countless mistakes with the editing, graphics, and layout because I rushed and rushed. I hadn’t learned to manage my time, how to build a team and delegate duties. I had to learn how to slow down, how to delegate responsibility, edit correctly, and read more. After learning these key things I started seeing the wealth. I started spending more healthy time with my family. I began to remove unnecessary and unhealthy things from within my circle. In this issue you’ll read about young men and women learning a trade for future gain. Tidewater Tech Trade teaches students HVAC, welding, and car repair. Most important the knowledge gain wealth working with a company or your owning your business. We have GMAN Entertainment who discusses the importance of learning the music business and growing from what you learned. Sit back, relax and enjoy our 3rd anniversary edition.

ull Figured Creations was established in September 2008; with a goal to cater to Real Women of Size. We are giving the tools that these women need, not only to make choices but to transform them into actions and outcomes. Believing that the first step is not to unlearn the things society has led her to believe about herself but embrace and change them. It is then that we must reach within and find the selfempowerment to command the respect that

This is just the beginning! I’ve had the opportunity to visit a variety of modeling agencies and model agents from New York to Miami, FL. Knowing how the industry works; they assume women of real size have little to no self esteem. Full Figured Creations is here to change that. We have great plans for full figured women in the near future. As our organizations grows, we are seeing more of the clientele come by word of mouth; women are starting to hear about the miraculous transformations that are occurring here at FFC; creating a curiosity among the full figured women of the Hampton Roads area.

fter returning home from working in the Persian Gulf, Michael Palmer got the surprise of his life while standing in line at a club on the military base back in 1991. He had no way of knowing, not only that the beautiful gem he laid his eyes on would one day be his wife, mother of their 3 kids, Ashley, Michael II and Esron, and would also be the other half of the what would make thier business,a love story and entreprepeur success. Their relationship started when they hit it off that night at the club, but it didn’t really take off until a few days later when Michael called her for their first official date. Once that spark had lit, there was no putting it out, and Michael made her Mrs. Palmer a few years later. However, this would not be the only important role she would play in his life. In 1998, a couple years into their marriage, the Palmer’s put all their faith in a dream and opened their first MP Island Café and Grocery at the corner of Virginia Beach Blvd and Raby Road. MP Island features some of the best Caribbean and Southern style cuisine as well as food supplies. Their business thrived so fast, they needed room to expand, and they moved to their current location at 5957 Virginia Beach Blvd in Norfolk, VA. Continuing to flourish, they have multiplied their property portfolio and now have locations at 3320 Holland Road in Virginia Beach and 203 Red Neck Road in Newport News. Much of their success comes from the fact that most area Caribbean restaurants depend on the MP Island Café and Grocery for their Carribean food supplies. Having the chance to observe other businesses successes and failures, Michael and Jackie realized what they

needed in their own restaurant to make it a successful, and they have achieved that. MP Island Cafe offers a variety of choices, to include daily lunch specials from 9am to 2:30pm, daily all you can eat caribean style buffet until 9pm, an array of desserts displayed in beautiful desserts showcase. MP Island Cafe is a family friendly enviorment mixed with great hospitality, you’re guaranteed to enjoy your dinning experience. You can also enjoy great entertainment on more than 5 flat screens placed throughout the cafe. Catch the latest games from football to cricket, the sport Mr. Palmer grew to love wile playing for his high school in Jamaica. Looking into the future, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer are working hard to assure a rock solid business so they can be anexample and provide leadership advice to other businesses. towards franchising their efforts. Right now, they are currently working to emphasize on their catering business and recently opened their very own banquet hall adjacent to their Norfolk location. The newly added banquet hall holds up to 100 people and is available for small or large groups. One thing is for sure, Michael and Jackie Palmer will always have a huge support system behind their every move, from their family and friends who love the blend of the Southern style and Caribbean cuisine to their three children they encourage and support, and to everyone else in between that has been lucky enough to discover and try the best Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken Hampton Roads has to offer, which happens to be at any of the three MP Island Café and Grocery locations. To order, get catering prices and all other information you can email the restaurant at mpislandcafeonline.com or call the restaurant at 5957 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA.

(ARA) - It is no secret that more and more families are making tough decisions when it comes to their entertainment options due to the rising costs of “going out.” But this doesn’t mean that there is no fun to be had. Instead, now is the time for families to get creative and enjoy time together by turning their home into an entertainment destination. There are a variety of ways to do this, and here are a few ideas for having a frugal “family night in” without sacrificing the fun: Movie night: Start by picking a theme -action flicks, comedies or even westerns. Once you pick a theme, why not dress up in character? The whole family will have fun putting their costumes together. Before the evening begins, gather the family and take a trip to your local grocery or convenience store to prepare for the night. Pick up a few snacks, a frozen pizza for dinner - or perhaps indulge a sweet tooth. Instead of driving to a local video store, simply rent a DVD at redbox on your way out. Available in grocery stores and other popular retail locations throughout the area, redbox is a fully automated DVD rental kiosk featuring the latest new releases for a low nightly rate. Game night: Playing games can be a great way for families to spend time together. Not only are they fun but they can help foster

14

manners like sportsmanship. Let each family member pick one game for everyone to play. It doesn’t really matter what games you play as long as everyone gets to participate. Keep score and give out a prize to the winner of the night - perhaps the winner gets to pick out the next game or can sit in the pre-designated winner’s chair. Dinnertime fun: Turn the kitchen into a full-service restaurant. Plan a fun, multi-step meal and assign each family member a responsibility. Pick a head chef, a sous chef and at least one person to set the table. Or, assign each family member a meal course. You might even choose a menu from somewhere around the world, like Greece, Italy or Mexico - then at dinner learn about that country. Pose questions and see who knows the answer; you might learn something new. One last tip that may help you fund any one of these activities is to use your spare change that many consider “found money.” Let your kids hunt for change around the house or dust off the family coin jar and head to a Coinstar machine at your local grocery store or other retailer. The average household has $90 in spare change and this could easily fund your “family night in.” Don’t let the rising costs of going out keep you from having fun. Stay in and enjoy the time being with family. You never know when you might create a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Harry has an impressive volunteer record including The Boys and Girls club of Norfolk, Women’s battered shelter, working with the drug program, and has been awarded multiple different awards by the city of Norfolk for his volunteering and mentoring efforts. He is an artist at heart, a three time Apollo winner, and has appeared on Star Search and Discovery. He told himself that if his music career did not pan out that he was going to open a business that he could retire from and he has done just that with his latest venture of Harryo’s. He has a motto he lives by that is “Keep believing, Keep focused and Keep pushing.” Its seems that this motto has worked to his favor.

With a personality suited for outdoors, Bridgette Armstrong was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area and grew up enjoying fishing and crabbing. She has spent her life working hard for companies that have fallen through and, after 11 years with Verizon Wireless, has felt the repercussions of the

economy and its recession when they laid her off. Facing hard times and knowing she wasn’t alone, she decided she wanted to do something different - something that would benefit those in her community as well as the environment she loves. So she took her experiences, used them to help her grow, and has recently started a new chapter in her life. Tired of being laid off, Bridgette made the bold decision to risk everything she had and started a business with the person who could share her passion, her mom. She wanted to provide the community with something that could help them save money and the environment with something that could stop wasting its resources. There isn‘t much she loves more than shopping, so without a hesitation she decided she would open a place that was great for recycling with unbeatable prices. The newest thrift store on the boulevard, The M & M Thrift Boutique, opened its doors November 21, 2009. The shop, which stands for Me & Mom, is a thrift store unlike any other you have ever seen before. Set up in the same style as a boutique, this shop houses new and used clothing of the highest quality, and for the best prices. You can find anything from name brand or vintage womens clothing, both formal and casual, as well as designer purses, shoes, jewelry, furniture and more.. One thing you can be sure of when shopping at M & M Thrift Shop, you’re getting the best deals for the best quality in town. Bridgette’s goal was to open up an outlet that could help those who needed it by offering reasonable prices that beat other thrift stores, and she has achieved. Her new dream is to one day expand her shop to give her room for a mens section, which is the only thing her thrift shop is missing. With enough business, this dream can be possible. M & M Thrift Store is located at 5608 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10-6. For any more information, contact Bridgette at 757-490-0505.

(ARA) - The current gloomy economic conditions contain some good news for the smallbusiness sector. According to a recent survey conducted by Citibank, some small-business owners and managers are finding a silver lining in the current recession, seeing more high-quality candidates available for hire, rising employee retention rates and gains in market share. As a business owner, how can you take advantage of these small-business opportunities and make them work for your business? Small-business expert Dan Goodgame recently moderated a robust roundtable of small-business owners, who offer these three tips: 1. Take advantage of the talent pool As a result of the recession, there is larger pool of highly qualified and highly skilled employees available for hire. Many who may not have considered working for a small firm are now more open to the idea. Take time to interview a variety of job candidates on a regular basis, even if you don’t have a current opening at the company. This technique can help you fill an opening as soon as it is created with the best possible talent, and avoid some of the costs typically 50 to 200 percent of the employee’s annual salary - normally associated with staff turnover. 2. Retain your best employees Holding on to your best employees is of course crucial to building your business, and it’s going to get harder as the economy starts growing again. First, create a two-way communication system that allows employees, on a regular basis, to give and receive feedback on their performance and the performance of their peers and managers. Second, create an employee recognition and rewards program that extends

20

beyond compensation and bonus. Be creative with the rewards program; provide employees with paid time off to volunteer at their organization of choice. Provide recognition with “surprise” thank you gift certificates to a local cafe or restaurant. The “thank you” does not have to be a big dollar amount - just the recognition can go a long way. 3. Seek feedback from customers as you seek referrals With marketing budgets pinched, many business owners are taking a fresh look at ways to gain new sales by winning referrals from existing customers. One of the most effective methods is to seek feedback from existing customers on the quality of your products and services, and on your pricing. Tell customers directly that you want to do whatever is necessary so that they will be so pleased that they will recommend your company to their friends and colleagues. Listen to their suggestions on how you can improve. And when you’ve followed through on their advice, check back with them. If you know of a good prospect, ask your existing customers if they know her, and can introduce you to her and recommend you. One advantage of this approach is that it helps you get the feedback that you need to improve your service, even as it brings in new business. The small-business sector typically leads the U.S. economy out of recession, and that pattern seems to be holding up in the current downturn. Leveraging tips such as these will be key to surviving the toughest business conditions in more than half a century. Courtesy of ARAcontent

(ARA) - It’s spring cleaning season, but you don’t have to dread the chores associated with freshening your home for warm weather. With the winter chill still in the air, thoughts turn to warmer weather, days spent outdoors and one dreaded task -- spring cleaning. This year, avoid the huge overhaul and use simple steps to ensure your home is sparkling fresh and clean, even in places you might forget to look. Follow the advice of “The Accidental Housewife” Julie Edelman and use these simple tips and tricks to help maintain a clean home while preserving both your pocketbooks and manicures. The average household uses 20 percent of its kitchen-related tools 80 percent of the time that’s a lot of space wasters. This spring, invest in long-lasting and functional appliances that will stand the test of time. You can also use hooks and shelves over the cooking area to clear space on counters and in cabinets. De-stink the wash: Keepin’ it smellin’ clean Residue from laundry soil,

22

water hardness, and detergent residue can build up and cause odor in your washing machine during the wash cycle. This is actually a common problem that many high efficiency (HE) machine owners face, and they do not know how to fix it. Fear not - your machine is not broken and your detergent is working just fine. Help is here, with handy-dandy, manicure-friendly, premeasured packets called Tide Washing Machine Cleaner that help remove those odor causing residues. Just tear one open and pour into your powder dispenser (works in either your HE or traditional washer) and it’ll help wash away those stinky smells and residues, leaving behind a fresh, clean scent. Moisture build-up can become a nasty problem whether it is in your towels, clothing or footwear. Moisture is a breeding ground for mold, so keep shoes and clothing dry by using newspaper to absorb excess water. During warmer months, make sure to toss towels into the dryer instead of placing on lines to dry. Feng shui is all about placing things in a certain way to find harmony and balance within your surroundings and to ease the flow of chi (that’s Chinese for energy, not tea). To help keep the positive energy flowing, take steps to de-clutter your home. Throw away junk mail you keep lying around as well as magazines that are older than three months. You can also toss remotes or other gadgets you have lying around into decorative boxes with fun flower patterns for spring.

(ARA) - Every mom knows that the only thing to expect in the morning is the unexpected. Between finding time for a shower, getting the kids’ teeth brushed and keeping the dog from drinking out of the toilet, morning madness begins in the bathroom for many busy moms. According to a recent Scrubbing Bubbles survey, 81 percent of women begin multitasking right from the start, with eight in 10 admitting to multi-tasking more now than ever before. “As a mom of two, I know the difficulties of trying to juggle everything in the morning,” says Janice Croze, founder of 5 Minutes for Mom. “Like many women, I start my mental to-do list as soon as I step into the shower, so the last thing I want to look at is a dirty bathroom. By utilizing tools that work hard for me and employing some organizational skills, my mornings run smoother.” Croze is partnering with Scrubbing Bubbles to offer moms a few simple tips to minimize morning madness: * Prepare in advance - Make the extra effort to prepare lunches the night before for the kids to grab on their way out the door to school. You can also use the time to start prepping something easy for breakfast, like pancake or muffin batter. * Turn morning hassles into nighttime fun

- Picking out outfits is another night-before activity that can cut down on chaos in the morning. Try making it into a ritual after homework and before bed. If your kids are budding fashionistas, let them help choose what you’ll wear, too. * Choose cleaning solutions that work overtime - Avoid looking around your house and adding cleaning to your worries by finding products that work harder for you. For example, new Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-AClean Power Sprayer has active cleaners that keep your bathroom surfaces clean for days. So, there’s one less thing on your to-do list for the day. * De-clutter as you go - Don’t let a mess pile up in the kitchen sink after every meal. Be proactive - leave the dishwasher open and empty, directing everyone to put their dishes in when they’re done eating. * Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork - Team up with your family members to make sure that everyone has what they need as they go out the door, from completed homework and lunch bags to gym clothes and cell phones. Making a night-before effort, finding products that work harder for you, and staying organized will cut down on unnecessary chaos in the mornings. To find more tips to help you minimize your morning madness visit www.5minutesformom.com or www. scrubbingbubbles.com.

(ARA) - Even the healthiest eaters have their weaknesses - those foods that make them “splurge,” ignoring calorie counts and fat grams. It’s an easy trap to fall into; we’re surrounded every day by foods that taste good and inspire cravings. The problem is that when you splurge too much, it can start to affect your health. America’s overweight and obesity rates are startlingly high, but the good news is that all of us are only one smart choice away from getting on track with healthy eating and snacking. It might sound like a difficult challenge, particularly if you have kids. So many of the foods that aren’t good for you seem to be a more convenient choice. A great way to start on the path to better nutrition is to take a new approach to grocery shopping. Start by making a loop through the store - by sticking to the outer edge, you’ll typically find the foods that are closest to their natural state packed with beneficial nutrients. You don’t have to sacrifice flavor to eat more nutritious foods. Those with a sweet tooth can snack on naturally sweet California Raisins for a healthy snack that doesn’t taste like “health food.” In fact, recent analysis, funded by the California Raisin Marketing Board, of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggests that raisin and

24

dried fruit consumption are associated with better overall eating patterns and nutrient intake among adults. You’ll inevitably need some dry ingredients for cooking at home, like pasta and rice. Browse the aisles carefully, looking for nutritious whole-grain pasta and brown rice. Or switch things up completely and try a different grain, such as quinoa. What is quinoa? Quinoa (pronounced keenwah) is an ancient grain from the Andes Mountains of South America. It is just as easy to prepare as rice, tasty and packed with vitamins and healthy amino acids. Another good rule of thumb for a more nutritious diet is to look for short ingredient lists that are mostly made up of words you recognize. When you take your healthy goods home, leaf through cookbooks or browse online for recipes. California Raisins are a versatile ingredient, as this family-friendly recipe shows. Look for more like it on the Web site, www.LoveYourRaisins.com and get your family started on the track to better nutrition.

(ARA) - CPR has come a long way since the early days when cardiac arrest victims had air blown into their lungs with fireplace bellows, were rolled over a wine barrel or strapped across the back of a horse that was sent galloping across a field. This year, the American Heart Association is celebrating the 50th anniversary of modern CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation): the combination of breaths and chest compressions that can help keep a cardiac arrest victim alive. “We’ve made tremendous advances in resuscitation science in the last 50 years,” said Michael Sayre, M.D., chairman of the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. “We’ve 6developed the technology for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and trained millions of people in CPR. But survival from cardiac arrest is still too low.” Cardiac arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function - the heart’s electrical system goes haywire, the heart can’t beat effectively and the victim collapses. Emergency personnel respond to about 300,000 victims of outof-hospital sudden cardiac arrest each year, but more than 92 percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die from it. Without immediate CPR, the chance of surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest drops up to 10 percent for each minute that passes without treatment. Unfortunately, fewer than one third of out-

of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from a bystander. “We’ve got the science - now we need to get more people to do something when they see someone suddenly collapse,” Sayre said. In October, the American Heart Association will release its new guidelines for how to best perform CPR. The guidelines, which are revised every five years, are based on the most recent research and science - meaning that CPR continues to evolve, ensuring the most effective methods are used to help save more lives. The American Heart Association is encouraging people to take action with HandsOnly CPR when they see an adult suddenly collapse. There are just two steps: (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast on the center of the chest until professional help arrives. Conventional CPR (with breaths and chest compressions) is still recommended to help children under eight years old and drowning and electrocution victims. The American Heart Association is committed to making learning CPR accessible. You can visit www.americanheart.org/cpr to find out about instructor-led courses in your area or order CPR Anytime, an at-home CPR kit with an inflatable mannequin and an instructional DVD. For CPR instructions at your fingertips, download the Pocket First Aid & CPR application or the free Hands-Only CPR application available for the iPhone or Google Android.

Latricia runs the beauty school and saloon at 5 East Queens Way in downtown Hampton, Virginia, but the path that led her there wasn’t a straight one. One afternoon while playing hairstylist with her girl friends at home, the three of them devised a plan. They wanted to take this seriously and do this with real effort, so the three made plans to go to beauty school. Right before school started, one of her friends abruptly passed away and left a huge sense of loss in their friendship. The two remaining girls made a promise to continue with their plans for their education and this time it would be in honor of their lost friend Shantel. Latricia found herself really enjoying her experience at Jan-Mar Beauty Academy in Newport News, and felt that as much as she wanted it, she also wanted education to be involved. However, once Latricia would turn a client away because of an already full appointment book, the school gave no effort in forgiving her and kicked her out. Without getting discouraged, Latricia went on to nursing school and received her C.N.A degree. While working as a C.N.A., she still found time to apprentice at Hibiscus Hair Saloon and her cliental built up so fast, nursing had taken a back seat and she was driven to stay in the beauty industry. Latricia has over 20 years of experience and

28

has been a licensed hair stylist for eighteen years. She earned her license at New Horizon Beauty Academy. She opened her own beauty salon, but still felt strongly that she wanted education to be a part of her business. Her beauty school has been operating for almost 2 years now, with the entire upper level set as the scene of her classroom. This is where where her students learn and practice before going downstairs and working their magic. She is proud of her school, describing it as modern, trendy and advanced. There is no set price to attend her school aside from the main enrollment fee of $65. Instead, the prices fluctuates to help individuals afford

it with their individual circumstances. She describes her school as a place for women of all ages where even older women who may have troubled pasts can come to start a fresh, new chapter of their lives and have doors open to them. The only requirement she has is that you have either a high school diploma, GED, or one in the works. She is also working on getting the government to offer student grants for those students that simply do not have the resources, but dream learning this skill. At most beauty schools, they teach the basic bottom layer of this industry, but at Latricia’s school she makes it a priority that her students learn to become designers, training them to create looks that will bring out a client’s personality. All of her clients come from different places and cultures, so she trains to provide different styles and looks for all ages and groups. To be successful in this business, Latricia explains that spending extra time on yourself is a major way to find clients. Looking great every day will have people asking, “Where did you get that?”, and nothing can help your business more than telling letting them know that you do it all. Even apart from being trained to design and bring out personalities, these ladies also learn how to be assistants in the business and how to talk to anyone who could be a potential client. Eventually, these young ladies will be marketing themselves one day in the industry, and Latricia is preparing them on how to succeed. She will not accept laziness, keeping her students working hard while instilling in them great work ethics. Giving back is another thing they take pride in. Even though there’s a recession, they did not feel it. They lowered their prices and people appreciated that. “We gave them a break when it was hard times,” Latricia said, and she believes this is why they keep coming back. If anyone that is less fortunate wants it bad enough but does not have the finance to pay, Latricia has even done price cuts or free cuts for those who just let her know. Even some from the homeless community have been touched by Latricia and her kindness. She

offers work for pay and even open her restroom to the public. The young ladies are working hard right now and are on their way to a competition in Richmond. They have done plenty of benefits and have helped with a lot of shows in the area. They just did a fashion show at Phoebus High School for and in honor of kids with Alopecia and Cancer, for Alopecia awareness. It is her priority to continue giving back, coming as a second nature to her. Her beauty salon and students can do it all, from braids and weaves to designer cuts and coloring (they’ll do 4 colors if that’s what you want!). The beauty salon doubles as a barber shop where men can get colored, beard trims, edge ups or cuts. Right now they have a special, two people for the price of one. That’s a wash and style for only $35 for two people right now! They also specialize in creating a magical wedding day for brides, offering fresh fruits, vegetables and juices to wedding parties while beautifying them for the big day. They want their clients to feel comfortable. Now, Latricia is currently working on nail saloon. She is looking into a expanding her saloon in Hampton to a bigger location, and she wants to get her business lined up so she can eventually expand her business to Atlanta and Southern California. None of this could be where it is now without her business partner, James Patton, who has been in this business with her for two years now. While they both have side jobs, he with his Dough Boy Construction company that specializes in building new homes and improving old ones and with her also selling DVDs, they keep the saloon their first priority. Latricia even has her family involved, with her daughter attending her school, she with plans to one day leave it all to her, and her fiancé has the roles of the secretary of finances and her assistant in all her businesses. Her saloon is 5 minutes from Hampton University, and to set up an appointment or ask a question, you can reach the saloon 757-265-2852.

Well, Salon403 is one of the few salons that are open on Mondays. From our opening day three years ago, we have been open on Mondays so that we could offer added convenience to our clients. We are also open on Sundays by appointment only. Where can potential clients learn more about Salon403? Clients and potential clients can visit our website at www.salon403.com where they can get discounts for services. We currently offer special rates on Mondays and Tuesdays for relaxers and re-touches. We encourage visitors to our site to email us for information or to schedule appointments. Our staff responds to emails quickly. We also have a myspace.com/ salon403 and facebook.com/salon403 page. In most salons a client’s hair is normally done out in the open. Are there any special provisions for clients who may want privacy? Certainly, we offer privacy for individuals who do not want to have their hair done around others. On Wednesdays the salon is closed to the public so that we can accommodate their needs. I do have several cancer patients and they appreciate having this type of privacy. Are you engaged in any type of community service? I currently volunteer at the American Cancer Society. They have a program called Look Better Feel Better. I assist in wig-fitting, teach skin care and make-up application, and I show the ladies how to use scarves to adorn themselves. It’s importantly to give back to the community… the community supports you –so you should support the community. I am also a member of Sigma Gamma Ro where I am involved in other community service projects. Are you associated with any professional organizations? I am a member of the National Cosmetology Association, I have a degree in Business from Norfolk State University and as I mentioned I am a member of Sigma Gamma Ro. Salon 403 is located at 11747 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, Virginia, (757) 595-4430, Salon403@gmail.com

How did you get started in the beaded Jewelry business?

have other locations for Designer Jewelry by Lytania?

My name is Lytania Reese, I am 42 years old and I am the owner of Designer Jewelry by Lytania. I have been in business for the past 8 years. I started my career in the Jewelry business when I was working at the hospital. I met an old Egyptian lady and she showed me how to make a bracelet and told me that whenever I was ready she would help me to get started. When I was finally ready to get started she flew from California to teach me. I am still in contact with her.

Yes I do. I have a location in Charleston, South Carolina and I am in the process of opening up another location in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on Ehring House Street. In the past, I have had locations in Atlanta, Georgia, Elizabeth City and Charlotte, North Carolina. Although the stores were doing well, I decided to close them because it was a lot of work trying to manage and maintain all of the stores at the same time. Presently, I am in Charleston, South Carolina from Thursday thru Saturday and in Norfolk from Sunday thru Wednesday. It has not been easy but I am still standing!

When did you decide to open up a location to sell your jewelry? Well, I would make and sell jewelry by day and work at the hospital at night. One night I got caught sleeping on the job and I got fired. I didn’t want to go back to the streets so I decided to get some business cards, a cell phone and my little black box. My first location was inside of Showcase shoes. The owner Michael Gale offered me a corner in his retail store where I could showcase and sell my jewelry. So, I looked in the trading post and bought a cash register and a showcase. Little by little I purchased more and before I knew it the business had begun to take off. It was growing so fast that when Mr. Gale decided not to renew the lease, he encouraged me to stay there and expand my business. I decided to take a step of faith, I had my pastor come and anoint the building and soon people were pouring in. At the grand opening in 2003 the line was so long that it was around the corner.

How do you see your business expanding in the future? I would really like to begin teaching classes and teaching people how to make beaded jewelry. I am ready to take Designer Jewelry by Lytania to another level. I currently visit client’s homes for jewelry parties. I enjoy doing that because it’s a lot of fun. I don’t think many people know that they can host a party but I definitely

Looking for a new nail salon that provides a comfortable atmosphere, quality service, and affordable pricing? The best salon to check out in Hampton Roads is All About the Sole. Located in Hampton, All About the Sole, offers products that most salons around here do not; natural organic products. Imagine getting a pedicure with products that contain no chemicals, are good for your skin, and are actually edible! Owner Swazette Francois, a native of Hampton, who opened her business nine months ago, had the idea to create a nail salon that specialized in providing treatments that would be healthy for the skin and nail without the added chemicals. You will never walk in All About the Sole and smell that strong familiar scent from acrylics and other chemicals. In addition to using organic treatments, All About the Sole has a special treatment that no other salon in the area offers; fish therapy! As a treatment used to remove bacteria from the pores, Dr. fish (or nibble fish) are placed in the pedicure tubs and gently nibble on the feet of clients as they remove excess skin. After hearing about the treatment on television, Swazette ventured to northern Virginia to test out the treatment before bringing it to Hampton Roads. Other treatments that the foot spa offers range from the basic pedicure to a signature pedicure using real chocolate and even manicures; all using products containing lemon grass, mangoes, peppermint, and even lavender. With over 15 years of experience as a nail technician herself, Swazette and her employees are passionate about healthy foot care and ensuring that each and every one of their clients walks out with a great experience. “It’s a good place to come to escape to the hustle and bustle of the day. When you come in, you step in to a whole different atmosphere, we provide a different vibe than your traditional nail salon.” says Swazette. As the owner of All About the Sole Foot Spa, she has made it her goal that every customer will leave feeling like they made a new friend. As the business continues to grow, Swazette plans to expand her services to include brow shaping, massages, and facial treatments. While they are based in Hampton now, she has plans of adding another location in Richmond. All About the Sole Foot Spa brings affordable luxury to the Hampton Roads area. Currently they are offering a special promotion of 20 percent off on all of their services until the end of 2009. A 10 percent off discount is available year round on all services for military, educators, law enforcement, and social workers. While they do accept walk in clients, they recommend that customers make an appointment to ensure that each visit is as relaxing and enjoyable as it should be. Contact the salon at (757)263-2193 and visit their location at 1114 Big Bethel Road, Suite 110 in Hampton. For many African-Americans and African immigrants, hair braiding represents an important celebration of natural beauty, culture and freedom. This age-old art involves the intricate twisting, weaving, extending or locking of natural hair. It is a natural alternative to the damaging chemicals that many African-Americans use to straighten their hair. It is also a great startup entrepreneurial option for those with limited resources: almost no financial capital is needed to open a braiding business and, rather than requiring a great deal of formal education, the necessary skills are passed from one generation to the next. Hair braiding, like so many other occupations, provides outstanding opportunities for economic self-sufficiency so long as governments don’t impose arbitrary barriers to entry. Mrs. Sanderlin has successfully challenged cosmetology regulations in The Common Wealth of Virginia that arbitrarily restrict the right to braid for a living with needless coursework and examinations. How long have you been in the hair industry? I have 25 years of experience in the hair industry. Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy has been in business for 5 years. What is the history behind Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy? Well, our hair academy was the first business to be an official hair braiding academy under the Commonwealth of Virginia’s new legislation allowing braiders to become certified specifically for braiding. Many would be surprised to know that I actually wrote the bill and lobbied for this legislation. Do you offer services to the public? Yes, we currently offer services to the general public. We have a staff of three licensed

34

instructors that supervise our students as they perform these services. Our prices are discounted because this is an opportunity for our students to receive hands on experience. Have you seen a decrease in students due to the economy? Actually, I have seen quite the opposite. People are looking for to change careers because of the state of our economy. They are also looking for ways to subsidize their income. In this industry there is plenty of potential for people to own their own businesses after they get licensed. Who can attend Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy? In order to earn your cosmetology license you must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D.; those who want to earn their instructor’s license must currently be licensed in cosmetology, barbering, hair braiding or nail technician. If you are at least 16 years of age you can register with your parent’s permission. Do you accept financial aid? We sure do. In fact, students can pay for their education with financial aid through the federal government; veterans can use the G.I. bill and we offer in-house financing for students who pay out-of-pocket which allows them to make weekly, bi-weekly or monthly payments. We are also a training provider for Opportunity Inc. Workforce Development.

The Commonwealth of Virginia only requires 170 hours; however, our program is 300 hours. We found that once we lengthened our program our success rate and our graduation rate went up. Has Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy been engaged in any community events? In the past we have worked with Project Ready Summer Youth Program. This program provides jobs for youth within the community and provides n opportunity for young ladies who may be interested in various careers to have a hands-on experience. We also participated in a program where we offered free back-to-school hairstyles for low-income families who were pre-selected through a screening process. Are you a member of any professional organizations in the hair industry? At the time we are not a member of any organizations. In fact, I am currently working on starting an association for AfricanAmerican cosmetology professionals. I am looking to re-establish some of those organizations so that we (African-American cosmetology professionals) can have a voice in the community. I am currently working on a legislation that will affect the cosmetology industry…but it will be a benefit. I cannot give you details right now but it is coming soon.

Where is Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy located? We are located at 623 E. Virginia Beach Blvd Norfolk Va.23510. I wanted to make sure that the school was located in a convenient location. There are many talented young ladies in the community. Unfortunately, sometimes transportation or income is a hinderance. So, it was definitely important to me that the school be accessible. Our key focus and target market has been low-income individuals who may not have the finances to get into a larger hair academy. Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy allows these individuals to get a quality education and get licensed through an academy that they can afford. How long does it take to get licensed?

and most importantly LOCS. We have spent years perfecting a combination of methods to maintain locs. There is finally an alternative to constant twisting, beeswax, grease, and the DRYER. It is a method which helps the hair to hold its form without the use of heavy product eliminating the usual build up during the locing process. It also allows the hair to mat more compact which results in a longer lasting, neat appearance and a much stronger loc. Along with maintenance we also offer a variety of loc services ranging from cuts to color to styles. Too long have locs been stereotyped and misunderstood. From corporate America to the urban club scenes, the image of locs and natural hair has been revolutionized. It is time for us to realize our natural hair is beautiful and the possibilities are endless. Professionalism, confidentiality, natural hair care expertise and a commitment to quality & health make Black Butterflies your premier choice for natural hair care. It’s our passion to enhance your natural beauty. “Bad” or “nappy” hair does not exist beyond our doors. It is time for us to embrace our hair and discover our individuality. Our hair in its natural state shouldn’t be taboo because of the lack of education and options.

(ARA) - Although it’s important to protect your identity throughout the year, tax season is one time that identity thieves are out in full force, looking to take advantage of Americans not safeguarding their personal information. One important step to protect confidential information is to properly store and destroy all paper documents containing sensitive information that you no longer need. Shredding is the single most effective way to ensure that this type of paperwork is destroyed into unidentifiable pieces.

The PS-79Ci also features Fellowes’ Jam Proof technology, which calculates the amount of paper being fed into the shredder and stops a paper jam before it occurs. For additional identity theft prevention tips and information on how long to keep financial records, visit www.fellowes.com or check with your tax professional.

By using a cross-cut shredder, such as Fellowes PS-79Ci, paper documents are nearly impossible to piece back together.

(ARA) - Top executives and leaders in the automotive industry recently gathered at the National Hot Rod Association Museum in Pomona, Calif., to discuss the future of the industry. The experts focused on the role of technology in changing the industry and expressed concern about the availability of qualified talent.

Many of WyoTech’s students are entering the automotive industry from other fields and possess a passion for learning new technology. “We’re seeing a lot of people entering the field from the construction field looking for opportunities - and finding them in the automotive industry,” he says.

Job opportunities will abound for skilled automotive technicians, and industry professionals agree that many shops have trouble finding enough qualified employees. The experts stressed the importance of reaching young people early to recruit them into automotive careers and ensuring that they have top-notch training in the technical aspects of the field.

Hurd expressed the importance of reaching out to young people and helping them learn about the options for a career in automotive technology. “We have to introduce them to the industry early and really light that passion in them,” he says. “That’s the key to getting new people in the industry.”

According to the 2010 Edition of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook, continued growth in the number of vehicles in use in the United States will lead to new jobs for workers performing basic car maintenance and repair, with more entry-level workers needed to perform these services. Additional job openings will also be created by the need to replace retiring baby boomers. “The real demand is for qualified technicians those with formal training, good diagnostic and problem-solving abilities and training in electronics and computer skills,” says John Hurd, president of the WyoTech campus in Sacramento, Calif. “In fact, those without the required skills will likely face stiff competition for entry-level positions.” Despite the bright job prospects, finding talented employees with the right skill set is difficult. Hurd stressed that WyoTech makes an important contribution to the automotive industry by training young people for careers in automotive technology. He said that advances in automotive technology do not pose significant challenges for WyoTech, “As far as manufacturing, if you build it, we are going to train our technicians to fix it.”

One of the challenges that WyoTech faces is a lack of basic knowledge among entering students. “We get students who don’t even know what a screwdriver is, so we still have to start with the basics.” Hurd went on to say that as a result, WyoTech adapted its curricula and programs not only to the technology, but also to the realistic needs of students today. “We’ve had to adjust to current and even advanced technologies so that we can introduce more hybrid technology and advanced diagnostics. You have to know how to tune the engine and chassis to work together, for instance. The adjustments we’ve made have allowed us to add to the programs. While we used to have a six-month program, we now go through nine-, 12- and 15-month programs so that students can raise their skill levels and become better employees.” Hurd stressed the importance of vocational education and technical colleges in helping the industry meet its future talent needs. “I think that society as a whole has to realize that four-year colleges aren’t possible, desirable or necessary for everybody. A focused technical education can teach people the skills that they are going to need for the future they desire,” he says.

(ARA) - Registered nursing is one of the fastest-growing careers in the U.S. By 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates, 580,000 more nursing positions will be needed, a growth rate of 22 percent since 2008. Nursing is also thought to be highly recession-proof, actually adding positions during economic downturns. In July 2009, when the U.S. saw job losses of more than 450,000, more than 20,000 new nursing positions were added to the economy. In fact, in a December 2009 report on employment trends, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that in 2009, the U.S. added 631,000 positions in the health care industry, many of which were in nursing. These huge increases mean that many hospitals and clinics are struggling to meet their need for nurses. In fact, a June 2009 Health Affairs article by Peter I. Buerhaus finds that by 2025, the U.S. is expected to have a shortage of more than 250,000 registered nurses. “Simply put, there is a huge need for nurses throughout the country,” says Martha Ke-

40

ough, nursing director at Everest College in Ontario, California. Demand for nurses is high in all types of medical facilities, including hospitals, medical centers, physicians’ offices, nursing homes and assisted living centers. “Nursing is an exciting career option - somewhere between an art and a science,” Keough continues. “You get to interact one-on-one with patients and know you are making a difference in their lives.” While the number of new nurses entering the profession is growing, growth is not fast enough to meet demand. The American Association of Certified Nurses reported a 2.2 percent increase in enrollments at entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs in 2008 over 2007; however, that increase will not be nearly sufficient to meet the projected number of openings. (ARA) - New Year’s resolutions for 2010: Lose weight, stop smoking, start exercising, get out of debt. ... Year in and year out, getting out of debt consistently ranks among New Year’s top 10 resolutions. If your household is like many American households struggling with the recession, or worse, unemployment, getting out of debt will be close to the top of your list again for 2010. Unfortunately, like other tough habits to break, it can be difficult to get out of debt after developing spending habits that have heavily relied on borrowing from credit cards and home equity loans. While some households can slowly work their way out of debt, others that have been affected by a recent job loss may have no choice. If you’re among the more than 70 percent of American workers who are living paycheck to paycheck or must immediately cut expenses due to sudden unemployment, here are seven tips from FindLaw.com, one of the world’s leading online sources for legal information, on how you can get your new year off to a great start by reducing and eliminating your debt. * Write down your goal. Give power and energy to your goal to get out of debt by writing it down on a piece of paper and taping it to your refrigerator. Be clear. Write down how much you’re in debt, your goal date for being debtfree and your determination to cut expenses and stop needless spending. In addition, write down what you dream of achieving - buying your own home, or paying for a child’s college education - to give you and your family added

purpose as to why it’s so important to get out of debt now. * Get help now. Some households need expert help to get out of debt and create new spending and saving behaviors. Seek the assistance of a debt management or credit counselor, available through many social service agencies. Try visiting the United Way at www.liveunited.org. If you are at risk of going into foreclosure, call (888) 995-HOPE for a toll-free foreclosure prevention hotline sponsored by NeighborWorks America and the Homeownership Preservation Foundation. Beware of any debt management companies that demand payment up front for their services, which is a telltale sign of a scam. * Call your creditors. Don’t wait for your creditors to call you. Call them to negotiate a new payment plan that you can realistically handle, including lower interest rates on your credit cards. It’s not uncommon for many Americans who are deeply in debt to be strapped with interest rates as high as 30 percent. Don’t be afraid to ask a creditor to settle a debt for a lower amount than what you currently owe. * Cut back to the essentials. Cut your expenses to the essentials - food, clothing, shelter and transportation. Stop eating out. Cut out the afternoon candy bar and soda pop and start drinking more water. Stop buying lottery tickets. Start taking the bus or the train to work or, better yet, start biking or walking to and from work. Drop cable

want to encourage people to contact me at lytaniajewelry@yahoo.com for more information about hosting a jewelry party in their home. They can also come to the store located at 1500 Brambleton Avenue Suite 102 in Norfolk and I will be happy to assist them.

* Don’t skip these expenses. Depending upon the laws in your state, there may be some expenses that you must incur, such as auto and medical insurance, student loan payments, child support payments, license fees and, of course, paying local taxes as well as state and federal income taxes, according to FindLaw.com. Skip any of these expenses and you may wind up with much bigger legal headaches.

Have you had support from your family and friends in your business ventures? I have had so much support from my family, friends, and my church family too. I really would like to say thank you to all of my customers for their support. Individuals like Ella Patterson; my son Tyrell Reese and my mother Marjorie Jones have all been so much help and encouragement. I also want give a big THANK YOU to my church family at Gethsemane Community Fellowship where Dr. Kirk P. Houston Sr. is the pastor. Also, I have an awesome friend named Deborah who taught me wire work. I’m so thankful to her for helping me. Whenever I call she is always so supportive. Do you have any special promotions that you are offering? Right now I am featuring the New Tennis Bracelet and The Mother’s Bangle. These items are made to your specifications and on the spot. We will soon begin promoting our Mother’s Day Sale from May 1, 2010 thru May 8, 2010. Bring in this article and receive $5 off your Mother’s Day Bracelet. For more information:

* Go automatic. Have your employer automatically deposit your paycheck into your bank account. But don’t stop there. Arrange for the most essential bill payments - mortgage, electricity, heat and water - to be automatically withdrawn from your checking account. If you have a mortgage, escrow property taxes to ensure that they’re automatically paid. * Make more money. At some point, you might realize that you can’t cut any more expenses to make enough headway on your goal of getting out of debt. You might need to make more money by either taking on another job or selling some of your household items. If you take on a second job, look for an opportunity to work for a retailer that offers benefits to parttime workers such as discounts on merchandise and health care benefits.

In society we teach kids that the best way for them to be successful in life is to go to college and learn the tools necessary to be knowledgeable in a career. The idea of self educating oneself in a trade or career path is not often spoken about and even rarely practiced. The truth is that you can be just as successful going to college and earning a degree as you would be buying books and educating yourself about a career choice. One woman in Hampton Roads actually took the theory

48

and turned it into a fact when she decided to teach herself how to be a fashion designer/consultant. Tamika Albritton, an active duty service member of the U.S Navy and former plus size model, decided it was time to create her own designs and show the world that she too had what it takes to be successful in the industry. I recently had the opportunity to meet with the creator of T.W.A.S (Thick Women Always) clothing, at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake and was really amazed at how she was able to make

www.757pages.net

her dream come true with little assistance from any outside sources. Here is our interview: Natasha: So Tamika, I understand that you are a fashion consultant but how did T.W.A.Z actually get started? Tamika: Well the business got started last year. I actually used to be a full figured model myself and a lot of clothes that the models were given to try on would work because some of us had big hips or were endowed in the breasts. So I said ok let me do something to try and help us out. So I taught myself how to sew clothes and I’ve only been sewing on the machine for less than a year now. Natasha: Wow! So you didn’t have any training in fashion? Tamika: No, no training in fashion. I was just blessed with it. This is all raw talent and I love it! (both of us start laughing) Natasha: What actually happens behind fashion consulting? When someone comes to see you what can they expect? Tamika:, Ok, when they come in I ask them what type of look they are looking for, what type of event they are going to. I look overall at their style and ask them if they like punk rock; do they want to something a little sexy? I discuss the different types of fabrics I have with them. Most of the women I deal with are between sizes 8 to 18 so with those sizes I like to use materials that stretch because it hugs our bodies in the right way. Then I will do a sketch of what I think would look good on them and see if they like it. We’ll go over the different parts of the outfit and make sure they like it. From there I actually do their measurements and do the basic outline of the dress and have them try it on. Once it fits, I can finish the design from there. Natasha: So you design the whole outfit yourself? Tamika: Yeah, they’re covered from head to toe. Right now we have a lot of stuff that has been designed. We just got finished doing a big fashion show where I had 26 models, so that’s like putting out two lines at one time. I got a lot of great feedback and we want to mass produce

a lot of those units we put up on the stage. Natasha: What type of designs did you showcase? Tamika: I would say my stuff….people say my stuff is more eclectic. I love laces and fur; I like to accentuate the positives. If you have nice breasts or nice curves, I like to accentuate that about you. We used a lot of lace, leather, fur, and jean material. There wasn’t anything on that stage that wasn’t practical, that you couldn’t wear….stuff you could see someone out at the club in or at the mall in. I like to think outside the box. Natasha: Do you add makeup applications to their outfits along with shoes and accessories? Tamika: It’s just the outfit but fortunately just this past fashion show that we did, Shoe City sponsored every last pair of shoes that the models wore on the stage. They were outstanding! They let my models and I go in their store and choose everything we needed. It was awesome. So I’m hoping that we can get some more backing from companies. Natasha: Where is your business located? If someone wants to have you design something for them, do they come see you or do you meet them? Tamika: Most of the time clients have been coming to me because I work out of my house, but currently we are setting up our office in Hampton in the Full Figure Creations building off of Coliseum drive in Hampton. We’re going to be upstairs, so no longer will people be coming to my house! (laughing) Natasha: What age group are you catering to for your fashion line? Tamika: We have t-shirts and I want to work on a jeans line for teens because we have teens that don’t look like teens anymore. (we both laugh out loud) I would like to go to a woman who is 80 years old. I want to cover all age groups. Natasha: If you had to summarize the future outlook for your business, what would you say the plan is? Tamika: I would say, household name. That’s where we’re aiming, myself and my business partner Nikki McGregory, a household name for thick women. Because we’re the forgotten size, either you’re dealing with the real petite women or the real full figured sizes but that in

49

between is where we are missing something. We want to bring focus to our size. Natasha: You have to admit that it’s pretty phenomenal that you went from being a plus size model into owning your own fashion line without having any technical training in the industry. What advice would you have for those people who want to get into fashion consulting who don’t have any technical training or a college degree? Tamika: I would say that the hardest part is actually doing it and I’m doing it. Research, if it’s something you really want to do, if there is a certain technique you want to learn; the internet, go to the library. I don’t have a lot of money to go out there and take all of these fancy classes. I just sat down and made a plan for myself and decided what I wanted to do and researched it and now I’m doing it. Don’t doubt yourself, if all else fails jump in. Believe in God, walk by faith and not by sight and you will go where you need to go. Natasha: What message do you want to people

“no matter what size you are really, you can feel good about yourself. You can be sexy, you can look very professional; you don’t have to be naked to be sexy.” to receive about your business?

Tamika: I would like people to know that no matter what size you are really, you can feel good about yourself. You can be sexy, you can look very professional; you don’t have to be naked to be sexy. Feel good about yourself. Tamika Albritton, the self educated designer who took mixed her dreams with ambition and determination to create a successful clothing line and consulting business, is a woman of strength and courage. She is the epitome and true example of creating your own destiny and choosing the measures of your own success. For more information about Tamika and T.W.A.Z log onto www. This leaves the doors open for newer skilled technicians,” says Tidewater Tech executive director, Greg Smith.

(ARA) - The Obama administration has set forth an extensive bill designed to get the economy out of the recession and moving again. This $70 billion bill has a large portion directed towards students and investing in their education. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. David Obey (D-Wisc.) said, “Our short-term task is to try to prevent the loss of millions of jobs and get our economy moving. The long-term task is to make the needed investments that restore the ability of average middle income families to increase their income and build a decent future for their children. The financing for continuing education will help people get the skills and knowledge they need to get jobs in the future, thus boosting the economy. According to the summary of the bill released by the House Appropriations Committee, the bill would provide the following additional funding for student aid. * Pell Grants: $15.6 billion to increase the maximum Pell Grant by $500, from $4,850 to $5,350 for the 2009-2010 academic year. * Federal Work-Study: $490 million to support undergraduate and graduate students who work. * Student Loan Limit Increase: Increased limits on unsubsidized Stafford loans by $2,000. * Student Aid Administration: $50 million to help the Department of Education administer surging student aid programs while navigat-

ing the changing student loan environment. The bill also provides funding that will benefit higher education institutions, including: * $20 billion for school renovation and modernization, including technology upgrades and energy efficiency improvements: $14 billion for K-12 and $6 billion for higher education.

“We help people learn how to take advantage of this bill,” says Hill. “All they have to do is visit our form and fill it out. We guide them through the rest.” Anyone interested in going back to school can visit www.OnlineSchools247.com to see if they qualify. They simply fill out the form and an education advisor will help them get their share of the stimulus money and find the best degree program for them. Or, call directly at (888) 361-6349.

* $1 billion for 21st century classrooms, including computer and science labs and teacher technology training. * $79 billion in state fiscal relief to prevent cutbacks to key services, including $39 billion to local school districts and public colleges and universities distributed through existing state and federal formulas, $15 billion to states as bonus grants as a reward for meeting key performance measures, and $25 billion to states for other high-priority needs such as public safety and other critical services, which may include education. “These kinds of incentives from the government don’t come along very often,” says Janet Hill, financial aid and education counselor at ClassesAndCareers.com, a free online education service. “If people have been thinking of going back to school, now would be the time to do it. If they are hurting financially, they can easily get the money they need to get a degree.” These benefits are set to expire after the 2010-2011 school year and are available for campus and online colleges. Thanks to a growing number of online education options, degree-seekers can take advantage of President Obama’s stimulus bill without leaving their jobs. (nurses) Continued from page 49 A number of demographic factors are contributing to this shortage of nurses, says Maureen Peterkin, nursing instructor at Everest University in Brandon, Fla. First, demographic changes are increasing the demand for health care of all kinds, and nurses and other health professionals are in high demand. “With an aging babyboomer population, the need for more qualified health professionals is increasing dramatically,” says Peterkin. Other demographic trends, such as longer life spans, are creating a need for nurses with specialized training in long-term care and elder care. Second, the rising age of nurses is expected to spur demand for new entrants to the profession. “Another reason for a shortage of nurses is retirements, which are

expected to leave many vacancies,” says Peterkin. Many argue that a shortage of nurses negatively affects the quality of care patients receive. A comprehensive study by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, released in 2007, studied data from hospital records and suggests a lack of nurses may be related to declines in patient care. The study found that an increase in nurses was associated with lower hospital-related mortality and shorter hospital stays. Peterkin explains that Everest University’s targeted nursing program is aimed at helping students from a wide variety of backgrounds and work experiences get the knowledge and hands-on skills they need to enter the nursing profession in a timely manner. “Nursing truly is a rewarding career. We need to spread the word about all the important work nurses do,” says Peterkin.

How long have you been in the game? 8 years How did you get started with music? Listening to “It was written” by Nas, then I started writing around 2001-2002. Nas totally turned me on to hip hop. Who put you in the game and what inspired you to do music? My brothers basically and they have been my biggest mentors, great mentors. Music really runs in the family so naturally music was passed down to me and that’s part of Pure Brilliance. How do you define your self in hip hop, are you a gangster, conscious, party type of emcee? I’m a every type of emcee. I like to come with everything, it’s a really good fusion, a lot of creativity I represent the struggle without the negativity and ingnorance, what I feel hip hop was and what it should be. With me your gonna find some party, street music just a lit everything. My main objective is to get out there and be heard cause I have a lot to say. On the album Gentleman & Scholar there is no cursing and no violence, I have all kinds of music whether it’s being gospel inspired, I also have a track aboutbeing a slave. I represent good music Who is your target audience? I feel like I’m versatile I can reach everyone and that’s what I did with Gentleman and Scholar. I want toperfectly bridge the gap. We want songs that kids and the old heads can listen to. I do music that you can spiritually feel as well. We want to take you on a educational journey learn about our historywe want to give you a history lesson. I want to reach all the generations. What’s in your mp3? Frank Manner Good answer. Good Answer. Right now that’s what I want to hear all the time, everyday. Who in the industry dead or alive would you like to collaborate with? Tupac, would be the one. As far as someone alive, Nas, that would be a dream. Tupac I feel had the best spirit in hip hop and that’s where I want to be. What is the hottest hip hop track? “Gave you power” by Nas. The record where he talked about being a gun.

from Frank Manner? Pure hip hop I got the new album coming out this summer called The Bailout with a song on there called “The Hip Hop Recovery Plan”, like President Obama I want to stimulate the hip hop game like the economy. I also have a record called, “I Don’t Need Swagger”. Swagger to me is a term of how you act, that’s not confidence, your putting on a front for the people. I don’t promote that. I have a song called “On Ya Own” about a woman who lost her man, ended up on drugs and lost her child while her life continued to spiral down. She eventually starts to get on her feet. Its definitely a perfect hip hop album a little different from the Gentleman and Scholar album though and all produced by Jimmy Bluntz Where can our readers pick up your music? On I tunes right now, and you will find no negativity at all. Back 2 the Lyrics mixtape is also on Dat Piff.com. There’s a lot of things going on with Pure Brilliance. You can go to the website, I got a video called “Not Impressed” up there. You can also find out where to download the music and check out what we have going on. What kind of advice would you give to someone or group trying to get into the hip hop business? Honestly, it’s a hard up hill battle, especially if your serious, its not glamorous like what television makes it out to be. It can really be a rocky road. Just stay humble you’ll make it happen, if your serious. What is your motto? Carpe diem. Live for the day. Its your life, make your life the best that it can be. Is there anything that you’d like Seven Magazine readers to know? Yes, you can check us out at Af’ram we’ll have a booth at Af’ram and last year we sold over 800 cd’s there. I also want everyone in VA to pick up the music online and at Af’ram this year. It’s all about support. I want to send a shot out to Rock the Mic and M$ Blendz and XXL and definitely the family, Pure Brilliance. And finally, I want to see real emceeing, its commercialized. I would like to see the movement represent the people again.

(ARA) - Family pets cherish the home environment - it’s where they curl up on the living room floor, wait patiently for a treat in the kitchen, and patrol the halls making sure loved ones are safe and sound. Although pets are undeniably loveable, the animal dander and other allergens that accompany these furry friends can jeopardize the well-being of those in the home. If pets are an integral part of your family, take note of a few tips to keep your pet and home environment healthy. Many of the same volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and irritants found in home air affect the health of your pet as much as they affect your family. Adding an air purifier will reduce the amount of pollutants and irritants circulating through the home, allowing people and pets alike to breathe a little easier (and cleaner). Air purification systems like the Idyllis line from Lowe’s also have added benefits for pet-loving households - they dilute odors that may result from a wet pet, accidents around the home, or other pet smells. “Family pets bring great joy to a household,” says Clint Davis, senior vice president of merchandising for Lowe’s. “You can optimize the quality of life for everyone living under one roof by routinely cleaning your home and adding an Idylis air purification system that will reduce the amount of pet dander and other allergens that circulate from your pet.” Many of the most popular pets have the potential to aggravate allergies. Even if you aren’t allergic, animal dander (hair or skin flakes) can be a bother. Pet dander can remain on floors, walls and ceilings

months or years after the animal has left the house. Frequently vacuuming the home will eliminate some of the dander and allergens left behind. The Electrolux 12-Amp Versatility Bagless Upright vacuum cleaner has HEPA filtration that helps to keep the air in your house clean and a hand-held wand that can be used for picking up pet hair. If allergies are an issue in your home, there are steps you can take to curb the problem. Regular baths and grooming for your pets will go a long way in keeping family members healthy and allergenfree. While you’re washing your pet, start to think about cleaning other parts of the home pets may inhabit. Throw your pet’s bed and toys in the laundry once a week to keep away fleas and dust mites and to cut down on dander. Pay attention to your floors, where dirt can get ground in or collect in corners. Scrub the carpet with a carpet shampoo to remove any pet stains and wipe down wood floors with Method Wood for Good Floor Cleaner to eliminate bacteria, add shine and cover paw and claw marks. After you are done cleaning, be sure to seal and store cleaning products and potentially harmful household and garden products that your pet’s nose might find appealing. For more ideas on maintaining a healthy home with pets, visit Lowes. com/HealthyHome. Taking a few extra steps to clean up after your pet will keep your furry friends where they love to be - at the heart of the family. Courtesy of ARAcontent

help you slowly dissolve fat in your body. Premium tea leaves give you the best quality and best taste. Teawan (www.Teawan. com) has both quality tea and teaware products from Taiwan. You can choose tea bags or loose leaf options, depending on your preference. (ARA) - Trying to lose weight could cost you a lot of money - gym memberships, special diet foods, exercise equipment for your home or even hiring a personal trainer. But there are ways you can lose weight without spending a lot of money. You will still need dedication, time and a willingness to make changes in your life to achieve your goal. Here are some inexpensive ways to lose weight and stay fit: * Start a neighborhood walking club. Invite neighbors who have dogs to come along. Or join a local pick-up game of dodgeball, basketball or racquetball. At the most, you’ll need the equipment for the game. Set a weekly time for games and a daily time for the walks. Having other people involved will help encourage you to continue moving and exercising. * Add healthy ingredients that benefit your body to your daily menu. For example, relaxing with a cup of natural tea can help you reduce body fat and increase your metabolism rate. Oolong tea contains rich amino acids and cellulose, which can help lower your cholesterol levels. Green tea leaves contain vitamins C and E and a good amount of fiber. If you prefer black tea, its benefits include help with digestion. Drinking a cup of tea (without the sugar or cream calories added) after each meal will

* Do your own home workout. Grab a full jug of laundry detergent and use it for some lifting. If you’re looking for something lighter, fill a plastic bottle with water to use as a weight. Start dancing around your house and in no time you’ll break a sweat. This is great for cardiovascular exercise, and enjoyable if you can crank up your favorite tunes. * Borrow a fitness video from the library and tone your body with the experts. Repeat the video several times and then switch it for a new one from the library. If you have cable or satellite television, tune into some of the fitness channels for different programs. You’ll find styles ranging from yoga workouts to belly dancing to step aerobics. Set specific times each week to run through a 30-minute workout. * Clean the house. Pushing a vacuum at a rapid pace is good exercise. So is scrubbing floors or bathtubs. These activities also are good for toning muscles. Don’t let money keep you from accomplishing your goal of losing weight and getting fit. If one exercise or activity gets boring, switch to another to keep your workout fresh and to target different muscles. And organize a plan with a friend or family member so you can help keep each other on task to accomplishing both of your goals.

(ARA) - In the sea of beauty lotions and potions, how do you know what really works and is worth your hard-earned dollar? It’s best to trust the experts who test them all so you know what is fabulous, and what will flounder. Polly Blitzer, founder and editor-in-chief of BeautyBlitz.com, has spent years immersed in the beauty industry. Today she offers her insider tips for getting the best style at an affordable price: Tip 1: Utilize the Internet for beauty buzz and best buys The Internet is a great place to research, find and buy beauty products. There are blogs, sites and forums devoted solely to helping you look good and they can even save you time and money by weeding through the fads and helping you cut through the beauty aisle clutter. Tip 2: As weather cools, keep hair healthy and shiny When looking at hair products, it’s hard to tell if it’s worth spending more for expensive treatments. What’s the difference between pricey and less expensive products? There are a few things that could account for the price difference - packaging, exotic ingredients, small manufacturing facilities, etc. That doesn’t mean, however, that products without those are any less effective. Look for hair care products that have won numerous awards by beauty and fashion magazines since they have expertise in the area. To get sexy locks at an affordable price, try Pantene Pro-V products. Experts agree that Pantene products provide damage protection that even the leading salon brands can’t beat and the line was even recently awarded the “Good Housekeeping” Institute Seal. Tip 3: Utilize household staples When looking to save a buck and still look fabulous,

64

see what you have around your house. Always stock up on cotton swabs because they can be used for virtually anything. Clear nail polish goes beyond nail use - fix a quick loose stitch on the bottom of your pants or stop an itching mosquito bite. Tip 4: Think quality skin care for less You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a quality skin care product. Magazines and beauty editors say great things about - and give plenty of awards to - drugstore favorite Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream. Priced at $25, it recently outperformed pricier luxury creams costing as much as $350 in testing by the “Good Housekeeping” Institute. Its high quality ingredients and both immediate and long-term results make it a great buy. Tip 5: Focus on the beauty trends Metallic nail polishes are in this season - everything from silvers to bronzes to golds. The red lip is still on-trend as is the smoky eye, although it’s been freshened up by using soft grays instead of severe blacks. Finally, on cheeks, try a nice pink flush to give yourself an almost fairy or pixie look. Tip 6: Get the hair color to match the look Want to find a way to extend the time between your salon visits without sacrificing great looking color? Current at-home dye kits are very easy to use. One that particularly stands out is Clairol Perfect 10 by Nice ‘n Easy. It was the most awarded at-home hair color in 2008 by beauty editors at national beauty magazines because it’s the first to offer high-gloss hair color that covers 100 percent of grays in just 10 minutes. Look for rich, shiny colors in shades of gold.

Unless you have been living under a rock I am sure that you have heard about the Erykah Badu music video controversy. The Dallas native’s new video features her taking off all of her clothing then being shot down near the spot where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The second the video was released it created a world wide frenzy online.

People on Twitter were tweeting their opinions left and right. Everyone from Youngstown, Ohio to Tupelo Mississippi was gossiping about Erykah Badu and her getting butt naked in her music video. It made world wide news. I was amazed that people made such a big deal over the video. Even more amazing people were putting her down for what she had done. I would like for you to stop and think about this for a moment... A few years back Halle Berry revealed her breast in the movie Sword Fish. No one said a word, in fact she was praised for her talented acting and was paid a large some of money. I’m not complaining about a chance to see Halle naked, however the point that I am making is it was since less nudity. There was no need for it to tell the story. The movie would have been just as good without the scene. From an artistic point of view I think that Erykah Badu’s video had a VERY strong message behind it, and I personally give her a standing ovation for being creative and daring. Even if she did it as a marketing ploy, it was still brilliant. In my personal opinion Erykah Badu made a huge statement that was the perfect example of what freedom of speech really stands for. Whatever your opinion is regarding this video, I hope that you at least appreciate her courage for her being so brave to make such an artistic statement. In the famous words of Martin Lawrence... “You Go Girl!” Stop by the website and hit me up... Let me know what you think about Erykah Badu’s music video 757pages.net

(ARA) - Water vapor on windows is unsightly. It obstructs the view to the outside, and a sweating window is a sure sign that it needs to be replaced. And, there couldn’t be a better time to replace those sweaty, unsightly windows. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) still in effect for 2010, homeowners can take advantage of up to 30 percent in tax credits for energy-saving upgrades - including qualifying energy-efficient windows. “Most homeowners, especially in colder climates, have experienced condensation,” says Erin Johnson, window expert for Edgetech I.G. “Causes of condensation vary from overhumidification in a bathroom, or simply old, single-paned windows with conductive components. And it can come in many forms - from water vapor and droplets, to frost and ice - any

of which can cause unsightly and possibly unhealthy issues.” When condensation exists, often so do these three undesirable effects: * Energy Loss: Inefficient windows, such as those consisting of a single pane or metal-based components, account for up to 35 percent of energy wasted in the U.S. annually. Condensation is a prime indicator that the window is inefficient because it is directly related to heat loss and it even occurs in fairly new insulating glass windows, especially those containing highly conductive metal spacers in the glass system. * Mold: Visible mold can often be found in poorly insulated or installed windows. Mold is more and more being linked to child asthma and increases in general respiratory illness, allergies and outbreaks of fungal diseases. * Damage: Excess moisture can damage curtains, walls, carpets and even the window itself, including the frame and sealants. Over time moisture damage can stain wood, peel paint and rot frames. But most importantly, moisture can lead to seal failure and the need to replace the entire window system. Condensation occurs when moist air comes into contact with a cool surface, such as glass. Windows with metal-based components are especially susceptible to condensation because they conduct heat and cold. Convection currents further concentrate cold air along the bottom edge of glass, making that area most vulnerable. The primary component to watch for to prevent condensation is the spacer - the window component that separates and seals the two panes of glass. According to the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC), an important step toward reducing the potential for condensation is the use of a warm edge spacer system that reduces the conductivity through the edge of the window. “Non-metal, double-sealed warm edge spacer systems such as Super Spacer, are less conductive than metal spacers, which leads to less condensation in insulating glass windows,” Johnson says. “Because of its all-foam, no-metal design, Super Spacer offers the best condensation resistance in

72

www.757pages.net

the industry, and it also provides superior thermal performance - saving homeowners money on heating and cooling bills. It also goes a long way in ensuring that windows meet and exceed tax credit requirements for energy-efficient improvements.” Shopping for new windows The first rule of thumb when shopping for new windows is to understand what the labels mean, and to read them carefully. Windows that bear the Energy Star label are proven to reduce heating and cooling costs, and are NFRC approved for U-factor (the rate of heat loss through the window and Solar Heat Gain, which measures how well the window blocks heat from the sun). Additionally, some NFRC labels include Condensation Resistance (CR), which is reported on a scale from one to 100, and measures the ability of a product to resist formation of condensation on the interior surface of the product. The higher the CR rating, the better that product is at resisting condensation formation. While this rating cannot predict condensation, it can provide a credible meth-

od of comparing the potential of various products for condensation formation. This rating is not required to be posted on new windows - so be sure to do your homework if it isn’t there. “When information isn’t immediately available on the window, don’t be afraid to ask questions,” Johnson says. “Be sure that you are getting a window system with a nonmetal spacer and other non-conductive components. A little legwork up front can make all of the difference in ensuring your investment will save you money on energy bills now, and that the window will continue to perform well into the future.” To take advantage of tax credits in the U.S., windows must achieve a .30 U-factor and .30 Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. For more information on avoiding condensation and its damaging effects, as well as more tips for buying replacement windows that qualify for tax credits, visit www. healthsmartwindows.com.

(ARA) - A new year always provides the opportunity for a fresh start - especially when it comes to taking control of your personal finances. Although you may not be able to control the economy, there are simple things you can do to get your own financial house in order and make sound decisions about money. “The past year of change has inspired many people to play a more active role in their finances,” says Kasia Czarski, senior vice president, chief membership and marketing officer, with Foresters, a life insurance pro-

84

vider. “While money matters can seem intimidating, many times it just comes down to building good financial habits. A variety of resources are available to help you learn these habits and improve your ability to manage money. Sometimes you need look no further than your own employer or an organization you already belong to.” Here are some ways to take control of your finances this year:

www.757pages.net

If you haven’t done so already, start saving more. Stretch your annual savings goal a bit further than last year. Take advantage of any savings opportunities that might be available through your employer, such as group rate discount programs at local merchants and retailers. Develop a month-by-month budget and plan to allocate a slightly larger amount each paycheck. This will help you track spending and provide a realistic vision of how much you can save. Allow for both “known” expenses such as a new baby in the family, and “unknown” expenses such as unexpected car repairs. If budgeting is new to you, organizations such as America Saves (www.americasaves.org) offer free savings tips online.

“With the abundance of confidential services available, you can learn to build good financial habits that will last far beyond this year” Review your retirement plan and make adjustments. Take another look at the status of your 401(k), IRA and pension plan and sign up for any automatic increases offered by your employer. It may be time to reallocate some of your funds to account for needs at your current stage of life. For example, if you are starting to raise a family, you might have more long-term investment needs, but if you are nearing retirement, you may need to plan for more short-term financial needs. Make tax adjustments. Review the withholding on your paycheck and adjust it if necessary. Take time to gather and sort out your receipts from the past year to identify tax deductions. This is also a good time to determine what charitable contributions you are able to make this year, and how best to allocate your available dollars. Review life insurance needs. As your life changes so must your life insurance. Review

your current policy, especially if your family has experienced recent life changes such as a marriage, an addition to the family or a divorce. Determine if more coverage is needed to ensure your family will be able to keep the house, send your kids to college or sustain the family’s livelihood should something happen to one or both income providers. Seek candid and unbiased advice from a finance expert. Leverage other forms of assistance that might be available from your employer, insurance provider or other organizations you are already involved with, as they often extend money-saving support services as a complementary benefit to employees or members. For example, Foresters (www.foresters.com), provides its members with innovative life insurance products and benefits such as a confidential financial helpline called Everyday Money. Members have toll-free access to accredited financial counselors who can answer questions about everyday money management. The counselors, who do not sell or recommend any financial products, provide objective, personalized help on a variety of topics - from dealing with credit card debt, to making sense of your employer’s benefits, to getting help with tax and insurance questions, to finding government resources for new home buyers. Foresters Sales Agents do not give legal, tax, or estate planning advice. Prospective clients should contact their own legal, tax or estate planning advisor(s) on their specific situations. “With the abundance of confidential services available, you can learn to build good financial habits that will last far beyond this year,” Czarski says. “Even if you feel you don’t know a lot about money, expert help is available to assist you in gaining control of your finances; all you have to do is ask. Before you know it, you’ll be off to a fresh start.”

Seven Magazine caught up with the very busy Ray Lavender!! Watch out! Ray Lavender is back at it again: he’s stealing the ladies’ hearts of America! His sultry voice and sexy dance moves leave captivated audiences on the edge of their seats, screaming for more! This artist has straight up talent. He needs no electronic intervention to make his music sound great! Ray is, by no means, new to music. He is not new to performing in front of live audiences. This Monroe, Louisiana native has been performing since he was a young child. He shared that he began singing in his church choir. By the time that he reached high school, he was the star performer in plays and musicals. He was the first artist that was signed to Akon’s label, Kon Live Records.

Most people in the 7-5-7 may have heard Ray’s first single “My Girl’s Gotta Girlfriend”. The single recieved a lot of radio play, as well as lots of spins in the clubs around Hampton Roads. Also, he has performed locally several times. I saw him perform, for the first time, two years ago at the Norva. He opened up for Lyfe Jennings. When I initially saw his name on the venue, I poked my co-conspirator-concert-goingbuddy, Romonta and asked “Who is Ray Lavender”? His reply was “That’s the dude that sings ‘My Girl’s Gotta Girlfriend’. I am very ashamed to report that my initial thoughts were “Ew. Yuck. That song is N-A-S-T-Y. I hope that this opening act does not last very long.” And, I (very grudgingly) stood with the rest of the crowd. I openly apologize for basing my first opinion of Ray’s music on that one single. For the record, those thoughts quickly dissipated the moment that he opened his mouth and began to sing. (Also, the very talented DJ Elementz, shared the stage with him that night. The two of them, together, were breathtaking!) Ray also spent time touring with Gwen Stefani, all throughout London and Sweden. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to share that Ray has new music coming out! Ray’s collaboration with DJ Scream, “DaBedrocker”, will be released in approximately three weeks. (I simply cannot get THAT image out of my head.) Also, his selfentitled debut album, “Ray Lavender”, will tentatively be released at the end of 2010. Music is not the only thing that this young artist has been working on! Lights! Camera! Action! His repertoire also includes appearances on television. On Thursday, March 25th, 2010, Ray will appear on the Maury Show. (Email the name of the song that is performed to RayLavenderMusic@ gmail.com in order to recieve a copy of his new single!) Also, mid-June, be looking for him on Donald Trump’s reality series “The Ultimate Merger”. Ray refers to this show as “guilty pleasure for the ladies!” (That’s enough to make ME watch it.) And, finally, Ray also reports that there will be an additional reality show that is a spin-off from

“The Ultimate Merger”. Stay tuned for more information. I asked Ray his thoughts on what advice he would give our young, up and coming local artists. His sound advice is: 1. “Have a great product to get the right attention.” 2. “Let producers and executives know who you are and your story.” (Everybody has a life story.) 3. “Make yourself likable. Be humble.” 4. “Be sure to choose the right people to be involved in your circle and your business. Stay in your solid circle. You want a business manager that is already established and respected.” 5. “Get your own publicist.” 6. “Never give up. Never let anyone tell you you can’t”. (For example: “You can’t succeed because you’re too black, too brown, too tall, too short, your hair is too long, your hair is too short,” etc.). On April 30th, 2010, you can catch Ray Lavender performing at Romonta’s event: Romonta & Friends at Mango’s, 544 Newtown Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia on April 30th! The cost of tickets will be $10 at the door. Also, the night of the performance, there will be a drawing for two lucky ladies to go on a date with Ray and DJ Elementz! Finally, Ray can be found online at: www.myspace.com/RAYLAVENDER www.facebook.com/RAYLAVENDERMUSIC www.twitter.com/DAREALRAYL EPK: www.myppk.com/go/raylavender. aspx For booking inquiries, please contact Robert Miller at (810)210.7616 or robertmiller.raylroad@gmail.com

(ARA) - Whether you intend to send your child off to college or plan to pursue an academic or vocational path for yourself, reducing student debt load makes good financial sense, especially since the sticker shock of almost all kinds of post-secondary education can be daunting. Here are some tips to help you get “smart about paying for education costs. * If your children are quite young, or if you are making plans of your own, you may want to consider putting savings aside, taking out a prepaid tuition plan or establishing a 529 plan.

CM Agency owned by Steven Macarthur is a management company based in Norfolk VA. The company was opened in January of this year and is currently recruiting talent. MCM has already signed three local artists and is busy recording a mix tape at Black light studios that will be entitled the NU V.A. Volume 1 recorded at G-Man studios and hosted by D.J. MARS, the tape is expected to drop on April 30th, 2010.The companies website is currently under construction, so if you want the tape you can contact the owner Steven at 757-528-0308. Listen out because you are sure to hear a lot more from this hard working agency. Why did you decide to open MCM Agency?

I have three very talented male hip-hop artists. The first is Swigg, from Norfolk. He is a front runner that Timbaland tried to sign when Swigg was still In high school. That was not the right time for him but now he is back and ready and working hard. The second is Carl who was born in Brooklyn and been in Norfolk for years. He has been rapping with Swig for 16 years. Carl is the street and he will really get you jumpin at the club. My third artist is Klazik who is currently in the navy. He is the Barry White of the trio, always laid back and chill. The three are currently working on a mix tape together. How do you feel about the state of hip-hop music?

I have been in some sort of management for years, mainly retail. I love music and seemed to meet a lot of talented people. This is how my management skills, love of music and the talent I have found, all mesh together to make this venture in music management a great fit for me. I was born and raised on Vernon Avenue in Diggs Park in Norfolk V.A.. I know that there is a lot of talent here in VA, al lot of artists feel they have to go to Atlanta to be heard. I want to stay at home to find talent, then groom that talent, then make great things happen for them. There are not a lot of people working with talent from my neighborhood and I want to change that. I am excited about all that is going on so quickly. I have a vision to, by summer find a local club that will devote one night a week to promote the local talent, we all need to support each other. Can you tell us a little about the artists that you have signed so far?

We need to go back to move forward. There was more meaning to the music back in the day. The industry in general is giving artists a way to be creative and make money, instead of making money on the streets. Even though the industry seems to promote negative more than positive. What kind of talent are currently looking for? Female artists and unsigned producers is what I am looking for. I am interested in an artist, or genre if they are willing to work. Is there anything that you would like to say to the readers? We are here! MCM Agency, G-Man Ent. and Major Movement welcome to the NU -V.A.!!! Rachel Wright

Mz. Meka was born and raised in V.A. beach. She wrote her first song at age 14 and began recording music in local studios at age 15. At age 19, she enlisted in the air force and had to put her music on hold for a few years. In 2006, she returned to V.A. and a short time later in 2007, Mz. Mekas song “Put Ya Heelz On” was played on 103JAMZ. The song continues to be played on the Local Sunday Night Spotlight. Mz. Meka just wants to be heard. When is your album is expected to come out and where can we get it? A mix tape in December, “Class Is In Session” get it my space status link Mz.Meka. If you want a hard copy then contact Mz. Meka on her My Space page. What are the challenges of being a female rap artist? It is much harder and earn respect, without people trying to force you to look a certain way or rap about certain things. Most male rappers rap about drugs, women and cars. I think that women are expected to rap about sex. I mean sex sells, right, but I want to be a versatile rapper and an individual. What is your opinion on hiphop/rap today? I would have to say it is all bubble gum wrapped. I wish it were more lyrical, many songs are not talking about anything, people just like the beat. Many rappers just don’t take time on the lyrical context. Is there anything you would like to say to the readers? Start listening and pay attention. I don’t feel the love in V.A. I wish that the artists in V.A. would come together. Who are your musicl influences? My biggest rap influences are Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Eve, Foxy, Rakim, Mc Lyte and Mobb Deep. ---------Rachel Wright

Bernie Burns is a complete package when it comes to making music. This talented and skilled producer can make a song from start to finish. Whatever his clients needs are his goal is to make sure that their needs are met. Bernie’s company name is E.M.P.I.R.E Entertainment; which is why I asked him if he was from New York. He says his company name came from something his grandfather would always say – ‘Build an empire’. Bernie says that people are often surprised when they learn that he is from Smithfield, Virginia. When people think of artist or producers in this area they tend to think of the seven cities which doesn’t include places like Smithfield. Burns says that many would be surprised to know that there

96

is a lot of talent coming out of Smithfield. I thought it was admirable when he gave a shout out to The Bosses, Ghetto Chris, Rip Austin, and producer Hi- Def to name a few. Burns said they artists like Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Raekwon, Pete Rock, CL Smooth and of course, NAS have inspired him. Burns says that he would compare himself to NAS because he likes to make thought provoking music.” What is getting head from a woman in a whip gonna do for you. I’d rather talk about how “Everything is Gonna be Alright “ which is one of my singles that cater to real women. “I’d rather talk about me and my woman and how I want to make things right between us”. Burns says he wants his music to make people feel the way Al Green makes people feel. “You listen to Al Green and his music makes you feel like you want to be in love. I like to call it mood changing music.” Burns says that he believes that music is a spiritual thing and that it can plant seeds changing the way you think and how you feel. I asked Bernie Burns how he felt about the new trend in music where rappers are stating that they need to get the female they are pursuing drunk or tipsy so they can take them home. Here’s what he had to say about that: “I think those cats have no game. If you have to get a young lady drunk to get what you want – your game is on E! It’s nothing to be impressed with. It’s like mind control and manipulation.” For the ladies reading this article, you might find it hard to believe that some woman hasn’t snatched this man up by now considering that he is

divorced with no children. Burns is currently working on a new project called “The Gilded Age”. Burns explains that the gilded age was a time period from the late 1800’s thru the early 1900’s where business and politics were booming in America and there was a lot going on in the country. In 1928 the stock market crashed due to corrupt politics which caused the country to go bankrupt. Gilded means shiny on the outside but corrupt underneath. Burns compares this concept to music stating that today’s music paints the image of disobeying the law and doing what you wanna do and talking about girls and whips. What they don’t tell you is that they are about to do federal time for tax evasion. I asked Burns about the people who have supported him along this journey to achieving success in the music industry. Burns says that having a good support system is very important. “Mike Watts from Black Shepherd Records has been there from the beginning. They take care of all of my paperwork and internet marketing. Anything behind the scene they take care of. Seaborne’s Barber Shop in

Smithfield has been very supportive of my work. People like Rachael Jones who from A&R Management is my Atlanta connection, definitely a good source and an excellent person to know.” Bernie Burns makes sure that he performs as often as possible. You can find him at Blakelys on Wednesday nights; Entourage the 1st Mondays of each moth; and Moon Star Tavern on Sundays. “Whatever is popping, that’s where you’ll find me!” In the future Burns sees himself still recording other artist and being an executive producer…building music and artist management. Voe Black and Dj Reign both have to be some of the most creative emcees that i’ve ever come across. I met up with Dj Reign out while he was promoting thier new cd and hands down it’s hot. Seven sat down and chopped it up with and asked them question that our readers wanted to know. Who has inspires you in the music game? Artist like Jay Z, Nas and legendary hip-hop artist have been my inspiration. How do you hone your skills as an artist? I go to the studio four or more times each week. If I am not there recording material, I am getting new ideas or supporting other artist. Have you done any collaboration? I have worked with D.J. Gataz and D.J. Al Boog. As for beat makers I have worked with Burd Swerve Records, Rob Base, Hood Legend Records, Truth and Dox and Dibb Stacks. I recently did the We Print It T’s Commercial on CW network. I also have music on D.J. Gen Starr’s mix tape out of New York and “Last one up gets the Leftovers” with D.J. Rein. Which one of your songs is your favorite track right now? I would definitely have to say “Step Step”. This track is a great opportunity to see how my flow is different than other artists. It was produced by Rob Base and I believe that colleges will love it because of the marching band music and style of the track. I am looking to reach out to the colleges like Norfolk State and Elizabeth State universities. For anyone wants to hear the track they can go to www.myspace.com/unitehoodz and check it out. Do you have any other projects that you are working on? Yes I do. I have a new mix tape called “Cash It Out” coming out soon. Also, I am putting together a slam dunk contest for athletes ages 17-30. This event will be held in Norfolk this summer and will be an opportunity for talented athletes to showcase their skills and also give them something else to do. We haven’t locked in the dates yet but we are working on that now. Voe Black is currently looking to collaborate with other talented artist in Hampton Roads. If you are a female singer, producer or dancer; Voe Black is looking for you.

N

ucklez is a Norfolk resident as of 2000, who grew up in South Nashville. He began writing his own music in 1995, after the passing of his father. Nucklez inspiration has been his family and life experiences. “There is not any one artist who inspired my music, but I do like listening to Jadakiss, T.I., and Cassidy.” Nucklez is a one-man group who said, “I am kind of a loner, like a Rolling Stone.” Can you tell us something funny that happened at a performance? I was performing at the Caribbean a few years ago. We had finished the set but the beat was still going, when my then, four year old son, jumped up on stage. He was in front of a crowd of 2,000 people with an Italian towel throwing and dancing. What do you think about the state of hiphop today? Some say its dead; some say it is as strong as ever. I think hip-hop does not know what direction it wants to go in. I think that it is evolving, like humanity. Hip-hop is an expression from the artist, so naturally there are many styles. I feel like many of those styles, do not have a label yet and all of them are put into the hip hop/rap category. I think my music is a blend of Southern hip-hop/hip-hop. What would you like the worlkd to know about Nucklez, is there anything that you would like to say? Yes, first I want to say that I wish as an artist in the Tidewater area, we could all come together. We could be as crucial in the hip-hop industry as Atlanta, if we would all come together. Second, I would like to say that I am willing to work with anyone who is serious and wants to work and not waste my time. Third and lastly, I would like to add. Do not forget who you are, don’t sing about jewelry you don’t own or places you haven’t been. Wordplay is important, so just be real and rap about the truth. When does your album come out and where can we get it? I have a fresh out the gate album expected to drop the end of April 2010. You can get it on Face book-Tony Nucklez or MySpace-T.NUCKLEZ. You can also watch my music video on you tube Tony Nucklez“hear em talkin.”

axwell Dixon, better known as Grand Puba, is best-known for fronting Brand Nubian for the group’s first album -- and the excellent full-blown reunion album, 1998’s Foundation -- but he actually made his commercial debut with the Masters of Ceremony, a group who released a 1988 album (Dynamite) on 4th & Broadway. Puba went solo with 1992’s Reel to Reel, which featured the classic singles “360 Degrees (What Goes Around)” and “Check It Out” (with Mary J. Blige). Never the most prolific rap artist, it took three years for a sophomore release (1995’s 2000), and his third album (the lackluster Understand This) didn’t come until 2001. Throughout his career, his lyrical schemes have been drizzled with the influence of his Nation of Islam beliefs. Basically some of the elements are still there, the rhyming is still there, you know, far as music it goes through transitions, like from the 80 to the 90’s it was more about having a good time. Then it went into hard sampling and being conscious and so on. When hip hop was growing it had a more soulful feel to it and we need a little more of that. When you first started, did you start with Brand Nubian? In the game or rapping? In the game. The Masters of Ceremony and we put out one album right before Brand Nubian. We had couple of hits and done very well in New York. One was “Cracked Out” and the other “Sexy” with the reggae in it and we got heavy rotation. After that, I formed Brand Nubian. in as well. That’s basically how we formed. We started making records together, came up with the name, and the rest was history. What rappers do you listen to now that you feel really emcee? I like Drake, Um j electronica definitely he’s officially. I really don’t listen to anyone specifically, you know what I mean? If its hot, it’s hot and I will listen to it, I appreciate good music. I’m not subject to any type of rap, it can be a party record, conscious record, if it’s hot, then that’s what it is. Man, my range is pretty wide. You know when its hot, you feel it in your soul, you cant deny it. Can we look forward to a Brand Nubian album soon? Oh yeah, defiantely, we’ve been touring. We’re just like brothers. Everyone still has their solo stuff going on and all that. We’ve been talking about a 20 year celebration, we’re gonna sit down and map it all out and make something happen. Do you have any projects coming out soon? Basically, I got projects that I’m working on for myself and others. R & B stuff, the same ole thing. I appreciate the opportunity for letting Seven interview you and I’m sure our readers will be waiting to hear your upcoming projects.

Five Da General, a product of New York, a natural leader and standout was always a kid that faced adversity and obstacles to living what mainstream America would consider a “normal” life, if there is such a thing these days. FIVE Da General is what you would call the total package in life as it relates to music. Standing 6 feet two inches tall with green eyes and a superstar presence, his music appeals to the ladies and the mainstream, as well as the streets and the underground alike. And with the five years of prison behind him, he is ready to embark on a new positive journey. Armed with real life experiences and not second hand tales, he has a real story and relates a story that demonstrates the fact that he has lived. He has star power and is one of the NICEST EMCEES (not rappers) lyric for lyric that you’ve ever heard. To FIVE Da General life translates to music and the music provides a means to transform his life. From an early age, FIVE Da General saw how life’s ills took its toll on the ones closest to him. From the heroine addiction his father was plagued with growing up, to his constant run-ins with neighborhood foes as well as the police, he learned how to speak his mind and protect his space from an early age. What you get from FIVE Da General is the core realism of a life told in the form of the underdog who personifies being blessed and cursed at the same time. With a commanding presence that immediately attracts your attention and a distinctive sound that differentiates him from being comparable to some of today’s supposed competition, there’s no questioning why Tight has the underground and southern markets on lock. Having already serviced the south with a number of hits that are still receiving steady radio spins, approval from the streets, and have resulted in coveted headlining club performances, Atlanta’s own Tight is grinding a lot harder than most major artist. Seated in the A room of Tight Sound Studios, you’ll find the Addicted to Money Records’ CEO and lead artist, busy at work on his next hit. With his first few singles “You Aint Fresh” and “Dump That,” becoming anthems for the clubs and the streets, his much anticipated follow up single “All Night” ft. Shawty Lo does nothing but secure Tight’s position as a hit making artist. Inspired by Hip-Hop Pioneers UGK, 2Pac, LL Cool J, and Eightball, he is an artist with more than just great music to give. The Gospel Power house Malaco Records has expanded their recorded label to now encompass an Urban division. As they expand into this genre of music they have singled out various artists to be the face and the foundation of their new division. One of the more recognizable talents signed to this new division of Malaco Records is Atlanta’s very own Brandy Hambrick also by her stage name Ms. B’Havin.

While working on her placements and song writing she focused on helping various up www.757pages.net and coming artist with Artist development.

Miss DOUBLE “S”...This multi-ethnic, talented actress, named after her grandmother Arlene Sweetie, is proving herself to be a “Triple Threat”: Actor/ Producer/ Philanthropist… It was while working at Miami based record label, Slip.N.Slide Records, that Sweetie discovered her true passion: ACTING. She headed to Los Angeles to pursue her dream and now has movies, several guest star appearances, numerous commercials, and producing documentaries & reality shows under her belt. Sweetie Sherrié has also graced the pages of several top publications and landing roles in national commercials, such as, Honda, TMobile, Oil of Olay, and recently shot a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial. Just wrapped on a film with Percy Miller and Tony Cox, where she plays one of her most challenging roles; a drug addict. Due out this FALL. Be it the abstract rhymes of multi-platinum duo Dre 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast or the gritty, soul-drenched sound of Texas tag team Bun-B and the late Pimp C of UGK right down to the pioneering kings of rock Run-DMC, two talented rappers have always given the rap world double doses of lyrical heat. Up next to add their names to the long list of two-man threats are Atlanta-based lifelong friends Spanky and Solo of emerging rap group Gutta Squad. This dynamic duo has already had ATL streets buzzing with two underground mixtapes. Riding off the runaway success of scorching track “Trap Everything” with accompanying video and strip club single “Come On,” they are readying for the release of their third mixtape Gutta Music Vol. 3 hosted by DJ Swamp Izzo of HoodRich DJs. “We’re more than just two people stuck together in a group,” Solo explains. “We know each other. We grew up together. We got a bond like brothers.” Both 24 years old, Spanky (Gerald Wallace) and Solo (Chris Watkins) first became acquainted at age 10. They initially met in the Atlanta suburb of Austell in the Baby Land community. Although they mutually had a deep love for music, they took different paths to their destination. Spanky knew from an early age that he wanted a career in rap music. Since middle school, he had been piecing together studio equipment and recording. He honed his skills rapping at clubs and performing at local talent shows. Solo, on the other hand, was making a name for himself freestyling and performing for neighborhood friends. He didn’t take the music seriously until he wound up in youth detention center for running with the wrong crowd. “All I had was those four walls. To keep me going, I started writing down what was inside of me,” says Solo. “I always had it in me but I didn’t have nothing to do but rap.” As soon as his foot touched free ground, he linked back up with Spanky and hit the studio. Song after song after song, they recorded constantly.
