Chef Skip admits that he has had some difficulty in the past which caused him to be incarcerated. He views that incarceration as a blessing and as something positive that has happened in his life. In fact, he says that going to jail has probably saved his life. It gave him time to sit still and to think about his future and a chance to clear his mind. He decided that returning to prison was not an option and he had to focus. It’s only been five years since his incarceration and clearly his dedication, commitment and drive has catapulted Chef Skip in the

even Magazine is happy to introduce you to Chef Skip. If you haven’t been to his restaurant at 1591Dahlia Dr #105, Virginia Beach, Va 23453, you don’t know

what you are missing. If you love seafood, served fresh and quick, then you need to visit Chef Skip. I asked Chef Skip what it was that set him apart from other chefs and other restaurants and his response was full of humility. He stated that he didn’t feel as though there was anything special about what he is doing. He’s just out working hard. After asking a few more questions, it became apparent to me that Chef Skip’s success is not by chance and certainly not by accident.

community. Chef Skip invested a lot of time and effort into assuring that his locations are comfortable, clean, and inviting to eat in. Opening up the space and creating an environment where customers can watch as their food is being prepared with fresh quality food was intentional and by design. Lastly, each meal you receive from Chef Skip will put two smiles on your face. The first smile is because the food is awesome! The second to go in. Chef Skip has been cooking and preparing food for well over 15 years. In addition to his hands on experience, he is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of Virginia where he was afforded the opportunity to develop his gifts and learn the technical side of cooking; which included learning the lingo as well as various cooking styles. After honing his skills, he decided to start his business by owning and operating a food truck. I

f you’re building a new home, a top priority should be the best possible fire protection: home fire sprinklers. Home fires today are hotter and faster than fires of the past and become deadly in just two minutes. Guidelines for customizing your fire protection: * Your contractor will customize your fire sprinklers to protect your home and its unique design. * Sprinklers will be supplied by the household water main or a tank and pump if the house is on a well. * Fire sprinklers work automatically if there’s a fire, controlling or extinguishing the blaze while it’s still small. * Each fire independently identification of sprinklers aren’t

REDUCE RISK OF HEART ATTACK “Despite the stats, people assume a heart attack won’t happen to them.” threat of heart disease. That was among findings in the MDVIP Heart Attack IQ Survey, a national study showing Americans are more concerned about cancer — although cardiovascular disease kills more people than all cancers combined. Consider these suggestions for reducing your risk of heart attack:

* Partner with your primary. Work with a physician who can provide ongoing support to keep you motivated and accountable. Those in the MDVIP network maintain smaller practices so that they can devote more time to each patient and provide important coaching. * Schedule screenings. Regularly track blood pressure, cholesterol and whether you have inflammation in your arteries or insulin resistance. * Make heart-healthy changes. Don’t skip exercise, weight management or smoking cessation programs. * Sleep more, stress less. Social Media MirandaNatural FB and IG (757) 512-4213 Specialty Natural Hair Care New Clients When I begin working with a new client, the first thing I do is get them into a regimen of water and oils to keep the hair and the scalp healthy. I also work with clients who have relaxed hair; however, I don’t apply any chemicals to my clients hair. I maintain their hair and keep it healthy. For those wanting to transition to natural hair I usually present 2 options. The 1st would be the Big Chop and the 2nd would be gradually cutting the relaxed hair off while transitioning to natural hair. Many women are uncomfortable with the Big Chop and then there are those who prefer the Big Chop. It’s always important to know what is important to the client. Benefits of Natural Hair The reduction of chemicals that are introduced into your body is a huge benefit. Everything we put on our skin, or on our hair and scalp is processed by our livers. I’ve seen women with scalp irritation and scarring occurring from dangerous chemical burns. Wearing natural hair eliminates this risk. Misconceptions One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that Locs require no maintenance. This couldn’t be more from the truth. It’s extremely important to wash, moisturize, cleanse and condi-

tion the hair and the scalp properly. I’ve started to notice that there is a stigma in the natural hair community that if you add human extensions that you are not “really” on a natural hair journey. I believe that is another misconception that I’m starting to see trend in some of the natural hair groups on Facebook. No one can tell you about “your” journey and no one can invalidate your journey. I encourage my clients to embrace their journey. The Art of Glass Blowing MirandaGlass757 FB and IG Passion Glass Blowing isn’t something I had ever imagined I be drawn to. I was going to school for photography and I had to take an elective. I decided to give glass blowing a try... Only to fall in love! I

didn’t know that it would change my life. It’s been two years now and I’m currently enrolled in advanced classes. In fact, I’m the only person of color in the advanced glass blowing classes. I absolutely love it, and thus far, my work has been received well. Satisfaction Glass Blowing gives me a relaxing, calming, and peaceful feeling. When I’m blowing glass, it doesn’t matter what I’m going through or dealing with. I just let my problems flow from me and right into the glass. I am always happy to see my customers faces when I hand them their order. It brings me joy to share my art with people

and know they appreciate it. New Ideas When I am creating a new project, sometimes I have ideas in mind beforehand , and sometimes I just free flow. My oldest daughter draws and she gets inspiration from my work and she also helps me to capture some of my ideas. I spend a lot of time watching videos and learning new techniques. If I come across a technique that catches my interest I’ll usually discuss with my professor. Family I’d like to think that my love for glass blowing has brought me and my 3 children closer together. It’s important ant to me that I leave a legacy for my children, so, I’d like to pass it on to them. Also, being able to keep this art form in the culture would be a wonderful thing. Honor I recently had the honor or incorporating my friend’s father’s ashes in a glass blown Memorial Ball. It’s a beautiful artful way to remember your loved one. You can pass it along within the family. It meant a lot to me that she allowed me to do that for her. Works of Art Some other glass blown items I make are Cups, Vases, Glass Floral Arrangements, Animals…it’s LIMITLESS! I plan on making a glass blown chandelier. Using the technique called glass fu-

sion, I’ve made glass cat masks as well. Vision I would love to open a glass blowing studio where the community can come and rent a space that is affordable and readily available. I’d also like to have some Exhibits. Glass Blowing is an old form of art that needs to be brought to the forefront and I am excited about being one of the artist who is striving to preserved and share the art of glass blowing.

4 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR STRESS

I

n the United States, a survey found that seven out of 10 people reported feeling some stress daily. To help you stay calm and focused, consider these four ways to reduce stress.

Smells: Certain smells can bring back specific and detailed memories. Seeking out smells that bring back those happy memories can help reduce stress levels. Salt: Stress is characterized in the human body by high levels of the hormone cortisol, the “stress hormone. Scientific research has shown that increased levels of salt consumption are effective in reducing levels of cortisol. Pets: Animal therapy has long been used to relieve stress, improve mood and treat anxiety. Some studies have indicated that just being around an animal can reduce blood pressure. Exercise: Regular exercise, even if mild, may be the best stress reducer there is. When you are active the body releases endorphins, which produce a feeling of well-being.

W

hen Jaylah Martinez has a paintbrush in hand, it’s like a conduit between the emotions inside Jaylah and the canvas. Like many teens, the budding artist has voiced big dreams for her paintings and art. In Jaylah’s case, she envisions them displayed in a modern art gallery in Los Angeles. Unlike most teens, however, Jaylah faces struggles with her health. The high school honors student from San Antonio, Texas, is battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Last August, she was diagnosed with stage IV Renal Medullary Carcinoma. Prior to her diagnosis, Jaylah was an active teen who had

taken on leadership roles, from serving as Teen Ambassador for the city of San Antonio, to designing and creating public art projects for Blue Star Contemporary’s MOSAIC Student Artist Program. Sadly, because of Jaylah’s health issues, she’s been forced to step aside from her extracurricular activities, which made the special surprise that Jaylah received all the more inspiring and uplifting. In December, Jaylah learned her dream as an artist, to show her work in LA, was about to come true. Make-A-Wish(R) Central and South Texas hosted a

special wish unveiling for Jaylah at North Park Subaru Dominion, which had set aside part of their showroom for a community celebration of Jaylah and an exhibit of her paintings during the annual Subaru Share the Love(R) Event. Jaylah greeted and hugged friends, family and local art lovers, and took time to describe the themes and inspiration running through her colorful paintings: Jaylah’s spiritual connection to God, celebrating life on Earth, and the comfort of familial love. Wearing bold silver earrings and a brilliant smile on Jaylah’s face, she looked every bit the part of an up and coming artist. “It feels good to know there are so many people in my life who are just supporting me no matter what,” said Jaylah. “And I’m very grateful for these people. Because they’ve helped me. A lot.” Jaylah’s upcoming LA exhibit will be held in January 2019. Despite Jaylah’s diagnosis, the high school junior is looking ahead to other life ambitions. Jaylah wants to attend college, major in biochemistry and become a research scientist who works to find a cure for cancer. Jaylah’s art show was also an opportunity to help other kids in her community who are facing a critical illness, so they could have their wishes come true, too. The exhibit was held in conjunction with the Pack the Outback Toy Drive, where families were encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to the North

Park Subaru Dominion to fill a new Subaru Outback in support of Make-A-Wish Central and South Texas. Kathrin Brewer, Make-A-Wish chapter president, said they were thrilled to have the support and partnership of the dealership. The heart of the matter is, she says, the wishes granted are more than “a nice experience.” “Wishes have the power to transform lives by providing hope and the ability to experience life beyond illness,” Brewer said. To learn more about how you can help grant more wishes to children who are faced with a critical illness, visit www.wish.org.
