iving ALL honor to GOD. Thank you for allowing me another day to expose the many gifts that you’ve giving me. “The greatest form of maturity is at the harvest time. That is when we must learn how to reap without complaint if the amounts are small and how to reap without apology if the amounts are big.” John Rohn I took this quote to heart. When business is up be greatful for the down times. Overcoming obstacles, negativity, etc. is what you should smile about cause you’ve made it passed that. So when your checking account doesn’t look the way you feel that it shouId look, think of the times when GOD has blessed you with the extra. This quote also made me think of our last issue. The good thing about life is most of us have a lifetime to fall, make mistakes and get back up. Everything you need for your better life and success has already been written. And guess what? It’s all available. All you have to do is go get it, its already written.

ull Figured Creations was established in September 2008; with a goal to cater to Real Women of Size. We are giving the tools that these women need, not only to make choices but to transform them into actions and outcomes. Believing that the first step is not to unlearn the things society has led her to believe about herself but embrace and change them. It is then that we must reach within and find the self-empowerment to command the respect that we rightly deserve from others.

This is just the beginning! I’ve had the opportunity to visit a variety of modeling agencies and model agents from New York to Miami, FL. Knowing how the industry works; they assume women of real size have little to no self esteem. Full Figured Creations is here to change that. We have great plans for full figured women in the near future. As our organizations grows, we are seeing more of the clientele come by word of mouth; women are starting to hear about the miraculous transformations that are occurring here at FFC; creating a curiosity among the full figured women of the Hampton Roads area.

fter returning home from working in the Persian Gulf, Michael Palmer got the surprise of his life while standing in line at a club on the military base back in 1991. He had no way of knowing, not only that the beautiful gem he laid his eyes on would one day be his wife, mother of their 3 kids, Ashley, Michael II and Esron, and would also be the other half of the what would make thier business,a love story and entreprepeur success. Their relationship started when they hit it off that night at the club, but it didn’t really take off until a few days later when Michael called her for their first official date. Once that spark had lit, there was no putting it out, and Michael made her Mrs. Palmer a few years later. However, this would not be the only important role she would play in his life. In 1998, a couple years into their marriage, the Palmer’s put all their faith in a dream and opened their first MP Island Café and Grocery at the corner of Virginia Beach Blvd and Raby Road. MP Island features some of the best Caribbean and Southern style cuisine as well as food supplies. Their business thrived so fast, they needed room to expand, and they moved to their current location at 5957 Virginia Beach Blvd in Norfolk, VA. Continuing to flourish, they have multiplied their property portfolio and now have locations at 3320 Holland Road in Virginia Beach and 203 Red Neck Road in Newport News. Much of their success comes from the fact that most area Caribbean restaurants depend on the MP Island Café and Grocery for their Carribean food supplies. Having the chance to observe other businesses successes and failures, Michael and Jackie realized what they

needed in their own restaurant to make it a successful, and they have achieved that. MP Island Cafe offers a variety of choices, to include daily lunch specials from 9am to 2:30pm, daily all you can eat caribean style buffet until 9pm, an array of desserts displayed in beautiful desserts showcase. MP Island Cafe is a family friendly enviorment mixed with great hospitality, you’re guaranteed to enjoy your dinning experience. You can also enjoy great entertainment on more than 5 flat screens placed throughout the cafe. Catch the latest games from football to cricket, the sport Mr. Palmer grew to love wile playing for his high school in Jamaica. Looking into the future, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer are working hard to assure a rock solid business so they can be anexample and provide leadership advice to other businesses. towards franchising their efforts. Right now, they are currently working to emphasize on their catering business and recently opened their very own banquet hall adjacent to their Norfolk location. The newly added banquet hall holds up to 100 people and is available for small or large groups. One thing is for sure, Michael and Jackie Palmer will always have a huge support system behind their every move, from their family and friends who love the blend of the Southern style and Caribbean cuisine to their three children they encourage and support, and to everyone else in between that has been lucky enough to discover and try the best Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken Hampton Roads has to offer, which happens to be at any of the three MP Island Café and Grocery locations. To order, get catering prices and all other information you can email the restaurant at mpislandcafeonline.com or call the restaurant at 5957 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA.

struggled and made a lot of sacrifices to open this restaurant and lounge. Harry Green built almost the whole place with his own hands. He gives a lot of credit to his wife for being where he is today. Harry has an impressive volunteer record including The Boys and Girls club of Norfolk, Women’s battered shelter, working with the drug program, and has been awarded multiple different awards by the city of Norfolk for his volunteering and mentoring efforts. He is an artist at heart, a three time Apollo winner, and has appeared on Star Search and Discovery. He told himself that if his music career did not pan out that he was going to open a business that he could retire from and he has done just that with his latest venture of Harryo’s. He has a motto he lives by that is “Keep believing, Keep focused and Keep pushing.” Its seems that this motto has worked to his favor.

Bridgette Armstrong, was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area and grew up shopping at thrift stores and flea markets. She has spent her life working hard for companies that have fallen through and, after 11 years with Verizon Telecommunications she felt the repercussions of the economy and its recession when

they laid her off. Facing hard times and knowing she wasn’t alone, she decided she wanted to do something different - something that would benefit those in her community as well as the environment she loves. So she took her passion and experiences that helped her to grow, and has recently started a new chapter in her life. Bridgette made the bold decision to risk everything she had and started a business with the person who could share her passion, her mom. They together wanted to provide the community with a place where people could buy good quality items at reasonable prices. There isn‘t much she loves more than finding treasures at thrift stores, so without a hesitation she decided she would open a place that was great for recycling with unbeatable prices. The newest thrift store on the boulevard, The M & M Thrift Store, opened its doors November 21, 2009. The shop, which stands for Mom & Me, is a thrift store unlike any other you have ever seen before. Set up in the same style as a boutique, this shop houses new and used clothing of the highest quality, and for the best prices. You can find anything from name brand or vintage women’s clothing, both formal and casual, and she also carries plus sizes. Her store also has designer purses, shoes up to size 12, jewelry, furniture and more. One thing you can be sure of when shopping at M & M Thrift Shop, you’re getting the best deals for the best quality in town. Bridgette’s goal was to open up an outlet that could help those who needed it by offering reasonable prices that beat other stores, and she has achieved it. Her new dream is to one day expand her shop to give her room for a men’s section, which is the only thing her boutique is missing. With enough business, this dream can be possible. M & M Thrift Store is located at 5608 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10-6. For any more information, contact Bridgette at 757-490-0505.

Meet Ms. Lytania Reese. She has to be by far one of the most laid back, and business savvy businesswomen that I’ve ever come in contact with. Ms. Reese gave us a few minutes of her busy schedule to talk about her busy lifetime and success in her industry. .How did you get started in the beaded Jewelry business?

My name is Lytania Reese, I am 42 years old and I am the owner of Designer Jewelry by Lytania. I have been in business for the past 8 years. I started my career in the Jewelry business when I was working at the hospital. I met an old Egyptian lady and she showed me how to make a bracelet and told me that whenever I was ready she would help me to get started. When I was finally ready to get started she flew from California to teach me. I am still in contact with her.

When did you decide to open up a location to sell your jewelry?

Well, I would make and sell jewelry by day and work at the hospital at night. One night I got caught sleeping on the job and I got fired. I didn’t want to go back to the streets so I decided to get some business cards, a cell phone and my little black box. My first location was inside of Showcase shoes. The owner Michael Gale offered me a corner in his retail store where I could showcase and sell my jewelry. So, I looked in the trading post and bought a cash register and a showcase. Little by little I purchased

more and before I knew it the business had begun to take off. It was growing so fast that when Mr. Gale decided not to renew the lease, he encouraged me to stay there and expand my business. I decided to take a step of faith, I had my pastor at the time, James V. Williams at 6th Street Baptist Church in Suffolk, come and anoint the building and soon people were pouring in. At the grand opening in 2003 the line was so long that it was down to the 7-11.

Besides the store in Norfolk, do you have other locations for Designer Jewelry by Lytania?

Yes I do. I have a location in Charleston, South Carolina and I am in the process of opening up another location in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on Ehring Hause Street. In the past, I have had locations in Atlanta, Georgia; Elizabeth City and Charlotte, North Carolina. Although the stores were doing well, I decided to close them because it was a lot of work tying to manage and maintain all of the stores at the

same time. Presently, I am in Charleston, South Carolina from Thursday thru Saturday and in Norfolk from Sunday thru Wednesday. It has not been easy but I am still standing!

them.

How do you see your business expanding in the future?

I have had so much support from my family, friends, and my church family too. I really would like to say thank you to all of my customers for their support. Individuals like Ella Patterson; Curtis Delk; my sons Tyrell Reese and Ricky Haley; and my mother Marjorie Jones have all been so much help and encouragement. I also want to say to a big THANK YOU to my church family at Gethsemane Community Fellowship where Dr. Kirk T. Houston Sr. is the pastor. Also, I have an awesome friend named Deborah who taught me wire work. I’m so thankful to her for helping me. Whenever I call she is always so supportive. 1500 Brambleton Avenue Suite 102 Norfolk, Virginia (757) 625-1000 – Store/(757) 9274484 – Cell www.designerjewelrybylytania.com

I would really like to begin teaching classes and teaching people how to make jewelry (wire work specifically). I am ready to take Designer Jewelry by Lytania to another level. I currently visit client’s homes for jewelry parties. I enjoy doing that because it’s a lot of fun. I don’t think many people know that they can host a party but I definitely want to encourage people to contact me at lytaniajewelry@yahoo.com for more information about hosting a jewelry party in their home. They can also come to the store located at 1500 Brambleton Avenue Suite 102 in Norfolk and I will be happy to assist

or many African-Americans and African immigrants, hair braiding represents an important celebration of natural beauty, culture and freedom. This age-old art involves the intricate twisting, weaving, extending or locking of natural hair. It is a natural alternative to the damaging chemicals that many African-Americans use to straighten their hair. It is also a great start-up entrepreneurial option for those with limited resources: almost no financial capital is needed to open a braiding business and, rather than requiring a great deal of formal education, the necessary skills are passed from one generation to the next. Hair braiding, like so many other occupations, provides outstanding opportunities for economic self-sufficiency so long as governments don’t impose arbitrary barriers to entry. Mrs. Sanderlin has successfully challenged cosmetology regulations in The Common Wealth of Virginia that arbitrarily restrict the right to braid for a living with needless coursework and examinations. How long have you been in the hair industry? I have 25 years of experience in the hair industry. Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy has been in business for 5 years.

34

www.757pages.net

What is the history behind Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy? Well, our hair academy was the first business to be an official hair braiding academy under the Commonwealth of Virginia’s new legislation allowing braiders to become certified specifically for braiding. Many would be surprised to know that I actually wrote the bill and lobbied for this legislation. Do you offer services to the public? Yes, we currently offer services to the general public. We have a staff of three licensed instructors that supervise our students as they perform these services. Our prices are discounted because this is an opportunity for our students to receive hands on experience. Have you seen a decrease in students due to the economy? Actually, I have seen quite the opposite. People are looking for to change careers because of the state of our economy. They are also looking for ways to subsidize their income. In this industry there is plenty of potential for people to own their own businesses after they get licensed. Who can attend Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy? In order to earn your cosmetology license you must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D.; those who want to earn their instructor’s license must currently be licensed in cosmetology, barbering, hair braiding or nail technician. If you are at least 16 years of age you can register with your parent’s permission. Do you accept financial aid? We sure do. In fact, students can pay for their education with financial aid through the federal government; veterans can use the G.I. bill and we offer in-house financing for students who pay out-of-pocket which allows them to make weekly, bi-weekly or monthly payments. We are also a training provider for Opportunity Inc. Workforce Development. Where is Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy located? We are located at 623 E. Virginia Beach Blvd

Norfolk Va.23510. I wanted to make sure that the school was located in a convenient location. There are many talented young ladies in the community. Unfortunately, sometimes transportation or income is a hinderance. So, it was definitely important to me that the school be accessible. Our key focus and target market has been lowincome individuals who may not have the finances to get into a larger hair academy. Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy allows these individuals to get a quality education and get licensed through an academy that they can afford. How long does it take to get licensed? The Commonwealth of Virginia only requires 170 hours; however, our program is 300 hours. We found that once we lengthened our program our success rate and our graduation rate went up. Has Saidah’s Beauty Connection Braiding & Natural Hair Academy been engaged in any community events? In the past we have worked with Project Ready Summer Youth Program. This program provides jobs for youth within the community and provides n opportunity for young ladies who may be interested in various careers to have a hands-on experience. We also participated in a program where we offered free back-to-school hairstyles for low-income families who were pre-selected through a screening process. Are you a member of any professional organizations in the hair industry? At the time we are not a member of any organizations. In fact, I am currently working on starting an association for AfricanAmerican cosmetology professionals. I am looking to re-establish some of those organizations so that we (African-American cosmetology professionals) can have a voice in the community. I am currently working on a legislation that will affect the cosmetology industry…but it will be a benefit. I cannot give you details right now but it is coming soon.

any have tried but only a few have been successful at bringing a local entertainment magazine to the forefront of the happening in Hampton Roads. Thomas Corbin, the military brat with big dreams, brought his tenancious drive to succeed with his keen business sense to bring Se7en Magazine to the forefront. While managing a talented staff, planning events all over the seven cities Corbin is a full time dad that holds his family values close. I sat down with Corbin for some insight on him musical influences, his laundry list of sales experience, and up and coming events for Se7en and Paragon Publishing. 1. Where are you from Mr. Corbin?

Well, I’m originally from Hampton Roads but spent a majority of my life in different locations throughout the world. As a military brat, whose father was in the Marine Corp, I’ve had the opportunity to live many places throughout the world. 2. What influenced you to get started in the entertainment industry? My love for music is what got me into this industry. I started playing the recorder in second or third grade and then I began writing music and playing the tuba in 6th grade. My family encouraged me to do music if that’s what I wanted to do. My pops, John Baxton, bought me 2 turntables, an amplifier, lights and speakers and i quickly started djing parties at 14 because I loved the music and true lyricism. I use to listen to Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Slick Rick, Stetsasonic, EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, NWA, etc. and fell into it with Hip Hop music. With television production at Kadena High School, I started doing video editing and camera work with my teacher John Zagorski and he taught me how to appreciate video prodution, angles and lighting. One thing that I often reflect on is how GOD put me in alot of these positions as a young man to condition me for what was to come. 3. How long have you been in the publishing business? I started publishing over three years ago but I’ve had magazine experience for over 4 years. I worked for another local publication for a few years. While I was at the publication I picked up all of the know how that I needed in order to put together my own successful publication. 4. What was your motivation for starting a magazine? Well, quite honestly, I wouldn’t have imagined that I would be a publisher for anything. I’ve ran my own business for quite a few years befor working at Clear Channel, The Talking Phonebook, another local publication as a salesperson. I’ve always loved sales and relationship building.I enjoy meeting new people, learning about their businesses, their family and their lifestyle and writing about it. I’m all about networking with anyone who’s positive. 5. Who is your target audience? My target audience is whoever is reading this interview. Anyone who has something to say about who they are, what they can do to help out the community, and whoever is looking to maximize thier exposure. 6. Who have been some of the most interested people interviewed? Definately Grand Puba, JP Paige, and Fred from Big Daddy’s Southern Cooking. Their lives are very interesting. From work to being at home with thier

irst and foremost I want to thank seven magazines for giving me the opportunity to be on the cover of Hampton roads premier publication. For those who don’t know me I am Mr. Innovative Twist the King of Print. So let’s get started with this interview SM: How did you get into the print game? MR. I.T: When I got out of the navy in 2004 it was hard to find a job in the computer industry with only the navy schooling so I got a job at FedEx Kinko’s where I learned a little bit about the print game. A friend of mine told me about another media company that did flyers and business cards, so I started doing side jobs with them and was doing well with it. The company asked me to come on full time and that’s how I learned everything I know now. From there, I decided to step out on my own. I sat in the living room writing words that I liked and combining them to see what I would call my business. From there I came up with INNOVATIVE TWIST (were your imagination is our determination).

question, are you single? MR. I.T: No, sorry ladies I am very happy to say I’m in a relationship and wouldn’t change it for the world. I have a woman who supports me, enjoys my kids, and just amazes me with everything she does. From being there for me and my girls, to being a full time mother, raising her son (Nicholas Besse). Thank you, baby. SM: What do you feel the future holds for you? MR. I.T: I feel like this is just a beginning. I’ve been through a lot, personal and business; and all I can say is I can’t give up. I have people who depend on me to help their business grow. I feel like I am on top of this print mountain and there isn’t anyone who can take me out without me putting up a good competitive fight. Many have tried but none have succeeded. So if I sound cocky I’m sorry it’s nothing but marketing

SM: What makes you keep on going? MR. I.T: My family, as a Hispanic I was always taught that family comes first….so I get up every morning knowing that I’m doing this for my girls Ymariana & Jalyssa. I want to leave them with something and teach them that anything is possible with a little dedication and hard work.

Continued on Page 52

SM: What makes you different from any other media company in the area? MR. I.T: I feel like it’s not about the money more than it’s about building relationships with my clients. Every company has their ups and downs but without loyal, valuable clients you have no business. Everyone can try to steal what you built by looking on the outside in but they don’t know what s on the inside, what the vision is, what I see for the future on how to expand this print game into different markets. SM: Who helps you run the business? MR. I.T: I have one person along side of me who helps me keep everything in line. Her name is Cathy Torres aka Wonder Women. I call her that because while she helps me stay straight and runs Innovative Twist, she also makes time for her kids, Seth and Ilyana Sanchez. Between sports and school, I honestly don’t know how she does it. So seven magazines when you do the next women of the year award make sure she gets nominated. SM: A lot of girls want to know that famous

should do more. What I mean by do more is to host an annual open showcase that they’re behind or get involved by giving something back. For aspiring artists, learn more about the business that you want to be a part of. You need a good team to be successful, one mission one goal.

How do you feel that Hip-Hop has changed, today vs. old school? I think old school had more of a message, now simple rhymes and catchy hooks took over hiphop. I feel that is the labels fault. Labels are not trendsetters they are followers. What kind of talent are you currently looking for? Everything, Hip-Hop/ Pop/R&B/Alternative. You can send any inquiries or if you want to submit music, you can send music to www.gmanmgt@yahoo. com. We are looking for people that are hungry and loyal that do not mind being guided and coached. What are some of your artist’s upcoming events? The events are put on the calendar as they get verified, they can be found on their website www. gmanent.com

Hip hop is the beast that seems to mask and re-mask itself from year to year, staying fresh and sometimes questionable. From conscious to Baltimore club the mindset of hip hop still says the same, express yourself and hold nothing back. Newer artist have taken that mindset and run with it, concocting truly unique contributions to the hip hop community and keeping the art form alive. Kenny-P may be the breath of fresh air that VA needs this summer. He raps, produces, and even dabbles in a bit a modeling making him a force to reckon with. feel really emcee? I like Drake, Um j electronica definitely he’s officially. I really don’t listen to anyone specifically, you know what I mean? If its hot, it’s hot and I will listen to it, I appreciate good music. I’m not subject to any type of rap, it can be a party record, conscious record, if it’s hot, then that’s what it is. Man, my range is pretty wide. You know when its hot, you feel it in your soul, you cant deny it. Can we look forward to a Brand Nubian album soon? Oh yeah, defiantely, we’ve been touring. We’re just like brothers. Everyone still has their solo stuff going on and all that. We’ve been talking about a 20 year celebration, we’re gonna sit down and map it all out and make something happen. z. Meka was born and raised in Va. Beach. She wrote her first song at age 14 and began recording music in local studios at age 15. At age 19, she enlisted in the air force and had to put her music on hold for a few years. In 2006, she returned to VA and a short time later in 2007, Mz. Mekas song “Put Ya Heelz On” was played on 103JAMZ. The song continues to be played on the Local Sunday Night Spotlight. Mz. Meka just wants to be heard. When is your album is expected to come out and where can we get it? A mix tape in December, “Class Is In Session” get it my space status link Mz.Meka. If you want a hard copy then contact Mz. Meka on her Myspace page. What are the challenges of being a female rap artist? It is much harder and earn respect, without people trying to force you to look a certain way or rap about certain things. Most male rappers rap about drugs, women and cars. I think that women are expected to rap about sex. I mean sex sells, right, but I want to be a versatile rapper and an individual. What is your opinion on hip-hop/ rap today?

I would have to say it is all bubble gum wrapped. I wish it were more lyrical, many songs are not talking about anything, people just like the beat. Many rappers just don’t take time on the lyrical context. Is there anything you would like to say to the readers? Start listening and pay attention. I don’t feel the love in VA I wish that the artists in VA would come together. Who are your musicl influences? My biggest rap influences are Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Eve, Foxy, Rakim, Mc Lyte and Mobb Deep. ---------Rachel Wright

ernie Burns is a complete package .When it comes to making music this talented and skilled producer can make a song from start to finish. Whatever his clients needs are his goal is to make sure that their needs are met. Bernie’s company name is E.M.P.I.R.E Entertainment; which is why I asked him if he was from New York. He says his company name came from something his grandfather would always say – ‘Build an empire’. Bernie says that people are often surprised when they learn that he is from Smithfield, Virginia. When people think of artist or producers in this area they tend to think of the seven cities which doesn’t include places like Smithfield. Burns says that many would be surprised to know that there is a lot of talent coming out of Smithfield. I

thought it was admirable when he gave a shout out to The Bosses, Ghetto Chris, Rip Austin, and producer Hi- Def to name a few. Burns said thatartists like Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Raekwon, Pete Rock, CL Smooth and of course, NAS have inspired him. Burns says that he would compare himself to NAS because he likes to make thought provoking music.” What is getting head from a woman in a whip gonna do for you. I’d rather talk about how “Everything is Gonna be Alright “ which is one of my singles that cater to real women. “I’d rather talk about me and my woman and how I want to make things right between us”. Burns says he wants his music to make people feel the way Al Green makes people feel. “You listen to Al Green and his music makes you feel like you want to be in love. I like to call it mood changing music.” Burns says that he believes that music is a spiritual thing and that it can plant seeds changing the way you think and how you feel. I asked Bernie Burns how he felt about the new trend in music where rappers are stating that they need to get the female they are pursuing drunk or tipsy so they can take them home. Here’s what he had to say about that: “I think those cats have no game. If you have to get a young lady drunk to get what you want – your game is on E! It’s nothing to be impressed with. It’s like mind control and manipulation.” For the ladies reading this article, you might find it hard to believe that some woman hasn’t snatched this man up by now considering that he is divorced with no children.

Burns is currently working on a new project called “The Gilded Age”. Burns explains that the gilded age

was a time period from the late 1800’s thru the early 1900’s where business and politics were booming in America and there was a lot going on in the country. In 1928 the stock market crashed due to corrupt politics which caused the country to go bankrupt. Gilded means shiny on the outside but corrupt underneath. Burns compares this concept to music stating that today’s music paints the image of disobeying the law and doing what you wanna do and talking about girls and whips. What they don’t tell you is that they are about to do federal time for tax evasion. I asked Burns about the people who have supported him along this journey to achieving success in the music industry. Burns says that having a good support system is very important. “Mike Watts from Black Shepherd Records has been there from the beginning. They take care of all of my paperwork and internet marketing. Anything behind the scene they take care of. Seaborne’s Barber Shop in Smithfield has been very supportive of my work. People like Rachael Jones who from A&R Management is my Atlanta connection, definitely a good source and an excellent person to know.”

often as possible. You can find him at Blakelys on Wednesday nights; Entourage the 1st Mondays of each moth; and Moon Star Tavern on Sundays. “Whatever is popping, that’s where you’ll find me!” In the future Burns sees himself still recording other artist and being an executive producer…building music and artist management. axwell Dixon, better known as Grand Puba, is best-known for fronting Brand Nubian for the group’s first album -- and the excellent full-blown reunion album, 1998’s Foundation -- but he actually made his commercial debut with the Masters of Ceremony, a group who released a 1988 album (Dynamite) on 4th & Broadway. Puba went solo with 1992’s Reel to Reel, which featured the classic singles “360 Degrees (What Goes Around)” and “Check It Out” (with Mary J. Blige). Never the most prolific rap artist, it took three years for a sophomore release (1995’s 2000), and his third album (the lackluster Understand This) didn’t come until 2001. Throughout his career, his lyrical schemes have been drizzled with the influence of his Nation of Islam beliefs. The editor-in-chief Thomas Corbin was able to catch up with Grand Puba and discuss where he is with his music. What age did you start rapping? 13 What inspired you to start emceeing? Cold Crush Break out Furious Five the all pioneers of the game. When I was younger we use to get tapes from parties and go home and watch the cassette spin around and listen to these brothers and that’s how we started getting our swag together. That was something we wanted to do follow the true pioneers. What do you see in comparison with hip hop then and now? Basically some of the elements are still there, the rhyming is still there, you know,

far as music it goes through transitions, like from the 80 to the 90’s it was more about having a good time. Then it went into hard sampling and being conscious and so on. When hip hop was growing it had a more soulful feel to it and we need a little more of that. When you first started, did you start with Brand Nubian? In the game or rapping? In the game. The Masters of Ceremony and we put out one album right before Brand Nubian. We had couple of hits and done very well in New York. One was “Cracked Out” and the other “Sexy” with the reggae in it and we got heavy rotation. After that, I formed Brand Nubian. Who discovered you guys? Dante Ross gave us the deal, he was with Tommy Boy Records but he was leaving. He informed me that he had this new thing bout to go on over at Elektra. He told me to wait a minute, let me leave Tommy Boy situation because I definitely want to sign you. So during that process I was producing Sadat X and Lord Jamar as a solo artists. I let the guys know that we need to do this together and since I was about to sign with Elektra, they’d be in as well. That’s basically how we formed. We started making records together, came up with the name, and the rest was history. What rappers do you listen to now that you Continued on page 92

CM Agency owned by Steven Macarthur is a management company based in Norfolk VA. The company was opened in January of this year and is currently recruiting talent. MCM has already signed three local artists and is busy recording a mix tape at Black light studios that will be entitled the NU V.A. Volume 1 recorded at G-Man studios and hosted by D.J. MARS, the tape is expected to drop on April 30th, 2010.The companies website is currently under construction, so if you want the tape you can contact the owner Steven at 757528-0308. Listen out because you are sure to hear a lot more from this hard working agency.

Can you tell us a little about the artists that you have signed so far? I have three very talented male hip-hop artists. The first is Swigg, from Norfolk. He is a front runner that Timbaland tried to sign when Swigg was still In high school. That was not the right time for him but now he is back and ready and working hard. The second is Carl who was born in Brooklyn and been in Norfolk for years. He has been rapping with Swig for 16 years. Carl is the street and he will really get you jumpin at the club. My third artist is Klazik who is currently in the navy. He is the Barry White of the trio, always laid back and chill. The three are currently working on a mix tape together.

Why did you decide to open MCM How do you feel about the state of Agency? hip-hop music?

I have been in some sort of management for years, mainly retail. I love music and seemed to meet a lot of talented people. This is how my management skills, love of music and the talent I have found, all mesh together to make this venture in music management a great fit for me. I was born and raised on Vernon Avenue in Diggs Park in Norfolk V.A.. I know that there is a lot of talent here in VA, al lot of artists feel they have to go to Atlanta to be heard. I want to stay at home to find talent, then groom that talent, then make great things happen for them. There are not a lot of people working with talent from my neighborhood and I want to change that. I am excited about all that is going on so quickly. I have a vision to, by summer find a local club that will devote one night a week to promote the local talent, we all need to support each other.

66

We need to go back to move forward. There was more meaning to the music back in the day. The industry in general is giving artists a way to be creative and make money, instead of making money on the streets. Even though the industry seems to promote negative more than positive.

What kind of talent are currently looking for? Female artists and unsigned producers is what I am looking for. I am interested in an artist, or genre if they are willing to work. Is there anything that you would like to say to the readers? We are here! MCM Agency, G-Man Ent. and Major Movement welcome to the NU -V.A.!!!

Voe Black and Dj Reign both have to be some of the most creative emcees that i’ve ever come across. I met up with Dj Reign out while he was promoting thier new cd and hands down it’s hot. Seven sat down and chopped it up with and asked them question that our readers wanted to know. Who has inspires you in the music game? Artist like Jay Z, Nas and legendary hip-hop artist have been my inspiration. How do you hone your skills as an artist? I go to the studio four or more times each week. If I am not there recording material, I am getting new ideas or supporting other artist. Have you done any collaboration? I have worked with D.J. Gataz and D.J. Al Boog. As for beat makers I have worked with Burd Swerve Records, Rob Base, Hood Legend Records, Truth and Dox and Dibb Stacks. I recently did the We Print It T’s Commercial on CW network. I also have music on D.J. Gen Starr’s mix tape out of New York and “Last one up gets the Leftovers” with D.J. Rein. Which one of your songs is your favorite track right now? I would definitely have to say “Step Step”. This track is a great opportunity to see how my flow is different than other artists. It was produced by Rob Base and I believe that colleges will love it because of the marching band music and style of the track. I am looking to reach out to the colleges like Norfolk State and Elizabeth State universities. For anyone wants to hear the track they can go to www.myspace. com/unitehoodz and check it out. Do you have any other projects that you are working on? Yes I do. I have a new mix tape called “Cash It Out” coming out soon. Also, I am putting together a slam dunk contest for athletes ages 17-30. This event will be held in Norfolk this summer and will be an opportunity for talented athletes to showcase their skills and also give them something else to do. We haven’t locked in the dates yet but we are working on that now. Voe Black is currently looking to collaborate with other talented artist in Hampton Roads. If you are a female singer, producer or dancer; Voe Black is looking for you.

ucklez is a Norfolk resident as of 2000, who grew up in South Nashville. He began writing his own music in 1995, after the passing of his father. Nucklez inspiration has been his family and life experiences. “There is not any one artist who inspired my music, but I do like listening to Jadakiss, T.I., and Cassidy.” Nucklez is a one-man group who said, “I am kind of a loner, like a Rolling Stone.” Can you tell us something funny that happened at a performance? I was performing at the Caribbean a few years ago. We had finished the set but the beat was still going, when my then, four year old son, jumped up on stage. He was in front of a crowd of 2,000 people with an Italian towel throwing and dancing. What do you think about the state of hip-hop today? Some say its dead; some say it is as strong as ever. I think hip-hop does not know what direction it wants to go in. I think that it is evolving, like humanity. Hip-hop is an expression from the artist, so naturally there are many styles. I feel like many of those styles, do not have a label yet and all of them are put into the hip hop/rap category. I think my music is a blend of Southern hip-hop/hip-hop. What would you like the worlkd to know about Nucklez, is there anything that you would like to say? Yes, first I want to say that I wish as an artist in the Tidewater area, we could all come together. We could be as crucial in the hip-hop industry as Atlanta, if we would all come together. Second, I would like to say that I am willing to work with anyone who is serious and wants to work and not waste my time. Third and lastly, I would like to add. Do not forget who you are, don’t sing about jewelry you don’t own or places you haven’t been. Wordplay is important, so just be real and rap about the truth. When does your album come out and where can we get it? I have a fresh out the gate album expected to drop the end of April 2010. You can get it on Face book-Tony Nucklez or MySpace-T.NUCKLEZ. You can also watch my music video on you tube Tony Nucklez“hear em talkin.”

Seven Magazine caught up with the very busy Ray Lavender!! Watch out! Ray Lavender is back at it again: he’s stealing the ladies’ hearts of America! His sultry voice and sexy dance moves leave captivated audiences on the edge of their seats, screaming for more! This artist has straight up talent. He needs no electronic intervention to make his music sound great! Ray is, by no means, new to music. He is not new to performing in front of live audiences. This Monroe, Louisiana native has been performing since he was a young child. He shared that he began singing in his church choir. By the time that he reached high school, he was the star performer in plays and musicals. He was the first artist that was signed to Akon’s label, Kon Live Records.

Most people in the 7-5-7 may have heard Ray’s first single “My Girl’s Gotta Girlfriend”. The single recieved a lot of radio play, as well as lots of spins in the clubs around Hampton Roads. Also, he has performed locally several times. I saw him perform, for the first time, two years ago at the Norva. He opened up for Lyfe Jennings. When I initially saw his name on the venue, I poked my co-conspirator-concertgoing-buddy, Romonta and asked “Who is Ray Lavender”? His reply was “That’s the dude that sings ‘My Girl’s Gotta Girlfriend’. I am very ashamed to report that my initial thoughts were “Ew. Yuck. That song is NA-S-T-Y. I hope that this opening act does not last very long.” And, I (very grudgingly) stood with the rest of the crowd. I openly apologize for basing my first opinion of Ray’s music on that one single. For the record, those thoughts quickly dissipated the moment that he opened his mouth and began to sing. (Also, the very talented DJ Elementz, shared the stage with him that night. The two of them, together, were breathtaking!) Ray also spent time touring with Gwen Stefani, all throughout London and Sweden. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to share that Ray has new music coming out! Ray’s collaboration with DJ Scream, “Da-Bedrocker”, will be released in approximately three weeks. (I simply cannot get THAT image out of my head.) Also, his selfentitled debut album, “Ray Lavender”, will tentatively be released at the end of 2010. Music is not the only thing that this young artist has been working on! Lights! Camera! Action! His repertoire also includes appearances on television. On Thursday, March 25th, 2010, Ray will appear on the Maury Show. (Email the name of the song that is performed to RayLavenderMusic@gmail.com in order go to 757pages.net to finish this hot interview!!

Five Da General, a product of New York, a natural leader and standout was always a kid that faced adversity and obstacles to living what mainstream America would consider a “normal” life, if there is such a thing these days. FIVE Da General is what you would call the total package in life as it relates to music. Standing 6 feet two inches tall with green eyes and a superstar presence, his music appeals to the ladies and the mainstream, as well as the streets and the underground alike. And with the five years of prison behind him, he is ready to embark on a new positive journey. Armed with real life experiences and not second hand tales, he has a real story and relates a story that demonstrates the fact that he has lived. He has star power and is one of the NICEST EMCEES (not rappers) lyric for lyric that you’ve ever heard. To FIVE Da General life translates to music and the music provides a means to transform his life. From an early age, FIVE Da General saw how life’s ills took its toll on the ones closest to him. From the heroine addiction his father was plagued with growing up, to his constant run-ins with neighborhood foes as well as the police, he learned how to speak his mind and protect his space from an early age. What you get from FIVE Da General is the core realism of a life told in the form of the underdog who personifies being blessed and cursed at the same time. With a commanding presence that immediately attracts your attention and a distinctive sound that differentiates him from being comparable to some of today’s supposed competition, there’s no questioning why Tight has the underground and southern markets on lock. Having already serviced the south with a number of hits that are still receiving steady radio spins, approval from the streets, and have resulted in coveted headlining club performances, Atlanta’s own Tight is grinding a lot harder than most major artist. Seated in the A room of Tight Sound Studios, you’ll find the Addicted to Money Records’ CEO and lead artist, busy at work on his next hit. With his first few singles “You Aint Fresh” and “Dump That,” becoming anthems for the clubs and the streets, his much anticipated follow up single “All Night” ft. Shawty Lo does nothing but secure Tight’s position as a hit making artist. Inspired by HipHop Pioneers UGK, 2Pac, LL Cool J, and Eightball, he is an artist with more than just great music to give. The Gospel Power house Malaco Records has expanded their recorded label to now encompass an Urban division. As they expand into this genre of music they have singled out various artists to be the face and the foundation of their new division. One of the more recognizable talents signed to this new division of Malaco Records is Atlanta’s very own Brandy Hambrick also by her stage name Ms. B’Havin. Ms.B’Havin emerged onto the scene in 2004 with her club anthem “Bottle Action” that was reproduced by Nitti Beats, followed up by a string of hit features and placements including Brooke Valentines Remix to “Girl Fight” and Young Joc “I Know You See it which she co-wrote and revived and BMI award for”, during this time MS. B’Havin made a decision to work behind the scene, as a writer and in 2007 she ventured out to start her own publishing company Brook’lynn Entertainment. While working on her placements and song writing she focused on helping various up and coming artist with Artist development.

Miss DOUBLE “S”...This multi-ethnic, talented actress, named after her grandmother Arlene Sweetie, is proving herself to be a “Triple Threat”: Actor/ Producer/ Philanthropist… It was while working at Miami based record label, Slip.N.Slide Records, that Sweetie discovered her true passion: ACTING. She headed to Los Angeles to pursue her dream and now has movies, several guest star appearances, numerous commercials, and producing documentaries & reality shows under her belt. Sweetie Sherrié has also graced the pages of several top publications and landing roles in national commercials, such as, Honda, TMobile, Oil of Olay, and recently shot a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial. Just wrapped on a film with Percy Miller and Tony Cox, where she plays one of her most challenging roles; a drug addict. Due out this FALL. Be it the abstract rhymes of multi-platinum duo Dre 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast or the gritty, soul-drenched sound of Texas tag team Bun-B and the late Pimp C of UGK right down to the pioneering kings of rock Run-DMC, two talented rappers have always given the rap world double doses of lyrical heat. Up next to add their names to the long list of two-man threats are Atlanta-based lifelong friends Spanky and Solo of emerging rap group Gutta Squad. This dynamic duo has already had ATL streets buzzing with two underground mixtapes. Riding off the runaway success of scorching track “Trap Everything” with accompanying video and strip club single “Come On,” they are readying for the release of their third mixtape Gutta Music Vol. 3 hosted by DJ Swamp Izzo of HoodRich DJs. “We’re more than just two people stuck together in a group,” Solo explains. “We know each other. We grew up together. We got a bond like brothers.” Both 24 years old, Spanky (Gerald Wallace) and Solo (Chris Watkins) first became acquainted at age 10. They initially met in the Atlanta suburb of Austell in the Baby Land community. Although they mutually had a deep love for music, they took different paths to their destination. Spanky knew from an early age that he wanted a career in rap music. Since middle school, he had been piecing together studio equipment and recording. He honed his skills rapping at clubs and performing at local talent shows. Solo, on the other hand, was making a name for himself freestyling and performing for neighborhood friends. He didn’t take the music seriously until he wound up in youth detention center for running with the wrong crowd. “All I had was those four walls. To keep me going, I started writing down what was inside of me,” says Solo. “I always had it in me but I didn’t have nothing to do but rap.” As soon as his foot touched free ground, he linked back up with Spanky and hit the studio. Song after song after song, they recorded constantly.
