Noho Design Museum Spring 2019 | New York City, New York

01

Located in the Noho district of New York City, this design museum focuses on highlighting the architectural design of furniture. The main gallery displays the famous pieces of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, with the secondary galleries showing such artists as Eames, Knoll, Saarinen, Bertoia, and Wegner. The program of this museum culminates gallery spaces, educational spaces, a material workshop, a product shop, and a public cafe. The formal design focuses on the shifting of forms and planes to blur the line between the public and private realm of the busy street corner and the intimate interior. 3

Architectural Design Portfolio

The form and layout of the Noho Design Museum began by conducting code and setback studies to determine where I could actually place the building. I decided to set the first floor back from the plot lines to create a mixed private/public space beneath the overhead form. Once the form was realized and created, I used a planar screen element to help continue the surrounding regulating lines and planar surfaces. In the end, the museum is a complex set of offsetting forms behind a simplified terracotta screen that is as much as an artifact as the art within the building. B

Formal Sequence

The formal qualities of the museum focuses on carving away to reveal program and spaces, with additive forms that encourage circulation and privacy. The form begins with carving away the ground floor’s corner to create a transparent corner that encourages inward movement. A public cafe was added adjacent to this transparent facade to offer protection off of the street, and create a new hub in Noho. This cafe has the ability to blend indoor and outdoor together, while still maintaining its function. Circulation cores were then added to strengthen the structural rigidity and serve as emergency exits. The spaces leftover in the layouts were transitioned into gallery spaces, educational spaces, a material workshop, and a product shop. The complexity of the forms are camouflaged as people move throughout the plan, and are only understood in the double-high spaces and outdoor niches.

South Congress is a bustling community south of the city center. The area is welcoming to PUD zoning, which makes this building perfect for its corner lot location on Elizabeth and Eva Street. 8

02 | MidMixATX

MidMixATX Fall 2019 | Austin, Texas

02

MidMixATX combines retail/commercial, office and residential in response to the necessity for denser land use in Austin, Texas. Located adjacent to the busy South Congress corridor, the project meets the demand for walkable amenities, shorter commutes and proximity to work. The mixing of uses within a compact corner lot created an interesting set of dilemmas and ideas. The initial design objectives were to create outdoor space for all occupants, maximize usable space, and provide small affordable retail units for local businesses. The distinguishing factor of the design is the implementation of blackened local iron work that act as visual buffers for the exterior openings. 9

Architectural Design Portfolio

MidMixATX is about as funky and interesting as the neighborhood it is located in. Due to the area’s rapid growth, PUD zoning districts are being used to bring in mixed-use programs and facilities. At the corner of Elizabeth and Eva Street there will be a building that offers four small personalized retail space, two large office spaces, and six one-bedroom apartments. This building has an L-shaped form to utilize the entirety of the site, while allowing for a private entry and parking lot in the rear. In the South Congress neighborhood, every building has a unique facade or physical element, and this building is no exception. The decision was made to set back a portion of the form to draw in pedestrians off the sidewalks. Once drawn in, the pedestrians are then offered an escape from busy public life through the use of a covered retail balcony. This balcony is used to relax and unwind from the very normative bustle of modern Residential Outdoor Balcony life and problems. A

02 | MidMixATX The existing site is surrounded by a wide range of building heights. The corner lot separates a large residential neighborhood and the newly developed PUD district.

Voids are then subtracted from the form to create intimate outdoor spaces for the public and the private. With the building located in Austin, Texas, I wanted everyone who inhabits the building to have outdoor space.

The building’s footprint is shifted toward Elizabeth street to encourage pedestrian traffic. The vehicular presence is kept hidden and entries are placed on less trafficked streets.

The last step to determining the form is to add directional elements to the building. The pedestrian usage is the main concern, all design moves are aimed to encourage an increase in foot traffic and usage.

A L-shaped building form helps utilized the majority of the site, and create a continuous corner. The back portion of the form is lifted off the ground to allow for vehicular parking and traffic to occur.

The residential program is independent of the rest of the building, with the office and retail located right off the street. Circulation Residential Office Retail

Pizza Cahen is situated at the eastern edge of the city. The piazza serves as the main entry to the city, and connects to Piazza Matteotti at the base of the hill via funicolare. 16

Funicolare >>> Train Station Spring 2020 | Orvieto, Italy

03

Orvieto has one of the most unique arrival and departure experiences in the world. A visitor arrives by train and makes their way to Piazza Matteotti to the funicolare to start their ascent to the historical city center. Upon arrival, passengers navigate to Corso Cavour, a street that directs people to the urban city center. The current condition of this transition is unsafe due to overlap of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and has no physical barriers or wayfinding objects to filter people into the town. We address these challenges by creating pavilions that separate pedestrians from vehicles and include distinct zones of usage. These zones create an unobstructed pedestrian connection between the train station, funicolare station, and Corso Cavour. 17

The city of Orvieto has a very historic and beautiful design language unlike anywhere else in the world. The newly renovated funicolare station using modern materials that mimic the old ones through texture, color, and course direction. The wooden pavilion to the south of the station plays off of the forms of local artist Bottega Michelangeli. The undulating forms create an overhead element that feels like you are standing beneath a grove of Stone Pine trees in the center of Rome. The design moves from this pavilion are carried throughout the piazza to create a unified design language.

03 | Funicolare >>> Train Station

The main purpose for the redesign of Piazza Cahen and the funicolare station is the existing dilapidated conditions they are both currently in. The welcoming sequence into Orvieto proper should not start with a crumbling, outdated funicolare station and vast concrete parking lot. The sequence should start with an experience that pays homage to the culture, building techniques, and materiality of the city center that visitors are coming to visit. By providing this experience and a safe pedestrian crossing toward Corso Cavour, the redesigned piazza master plan will create a sense of place and beauty in a highly complex entry sequence.

The Umbria region of Italy is one of the most beautiful areas of the world, so why should a small cable car station be the exception. Focus was spent shaping specific views of the landscape with clerestories and overhead elements. Even the small scale design elements are focused on by creating details and connections that will thrive and be standing far into the future of Orvieto.

To understand the proximity of the mall to the surrounding, there has to be an understanding of the effected watersheds. These watersheds show the areas in which the storm water flows past the site. The location of the mall is at a junction between all three of these watersheds: Kitten Creek-Wildcat Creek watershed, Cedar Creek-Big Blue River watershed, and Eureka Lake-Kansas River watershed.

04 | Three Rivers Mall

Three Rivers Mall Fall 2020 | Manhattan, Kansas

04

The Manhattan Town Center Mall is failing due to its inability to adapt to the modern mall typology. The Three Rivers Mall design idea focuses on incorporating stormwater management into a mixed-use mall program. The formal layout, parti, and programming of the site create a live, work, play location in the heart of the city. To create a focal point for the city of Manhattan the forms of the mall create quiet courtyards. This allows for pedestrians to interact with the stormwater on the site. Through the culmination of stormwater analysis, stormwater typologies, and stormwater phase construction, a complete idea of stormwater management has created a new typology for urban shopping malls in the Midwest region. 25

Architectural Design Portfolio

The Manhattan Town Center Mall used to be the icon of the downtown district. With online shopping and the expenses of in-person business, the normative interior-circulation mall is dying. The Three Rivers Mall is the exact mall development style that will bring malls back into existence. With the introduction of small businesses, restaurants, offices, and residential units, the mall offers a mixed-use development in the center of downtown. Three Rivers Mall also focuses largely on the environmental impact of shopping centers by introducing stormwater management techniques into the master plan. Once fully matured, the stormwater management construction will serve the entire downtown district of Manhattan.

The visible and physical connection between mall patrons and the stormwater techniques is a very important aspect of this design. The building forms create exterior courtyards that are places to rest, interact with the architecture, and even learn more about the stormwater techniques that are employed across the site. While most malls have large retail stores as anchor spaces, Three Rivers Mall has a large permeable outdoor courtyard instead. The main goal of the mall isn’t to increase retail consumption, but to instead lessen the impact of stormwater flooding in Manhattan and create a new design typology for urban stormwater management and remediation in shopping centers for the Midwest region.

Watercolor in Architecture Fall 2020 | Location Varies

05

Watercolor is one of the oldest media in the art world and has been used for centuries. Watercolor has always been a primary medium in sketching due to its charming and fluid quality. Its classic beauty withstands the test of time. The technique of watercolor focuses on the mixing of pigments and capturing the drama of light and shadow to develop tonal value in observational painting. The unique character of watercolor offers a healing quality while being constructive in the learning process of architecture. Watercolor is a method that encourages the artist to look at an object or landscape in a looser and more fluid way to truly capture the essence of a place in time. 31

Architectural Design Portfolio

Piazza Shadows and context are the most important parts of historic buildings. The shadows of the surrounding buildings cast dark and light zones onto the ground. The piazza adjacent to the Pantheon is usually riddled with tourists and city goers that flock to the sunlight that shines between the buildings.

Living History Trying to convey a monolithic historic object in a fluid loose way was the main objective of this piece. The varying tones and levels of blues, reds, and violets were used to add depth, mystery, and a sense of power over the background. The added people and birds give the image a sense of life and movement to closely resemble the actuality of the place.

The Pantheon 32

05 | Watercolor in Architecture

The Pope Saint Peter’s Cathedral’s massive scale and amount of detail shows the complete significance and importance of the building. The monochrome color scheme was chosen as a washed bronze to signify the age and history of the place. The added people and statues add life and scale to the painting to make the viewer feel more connected to the place.

Assisi, Italy This painting is one of the only situations where I have personal experiences to help me form my painting. I chose to focus on the different stark zones of light and shadow that are cast through the building forms. The bronze and brown is used to portray light washed area, where the red shows the heat and intensity of uninterrupted light. The overall painting is all about the negative and positive space between light and dark.

Italy 33

Architectural Design Portfolio

Riquewihr, France This piece is set in a small town in France that boasts a very bright and loud color palette. Through the sketch and the watercolor my main focus was on creating stark highlights and dark shadows to add a dynamic viewpoint to the work. In my work I chose a cool vibrant color palette to represent the town’s hues, shadows, and overall aesthetic. The subtle hints on pure reds and blues are meant to add significance and depth to the work.

Burgundy, France The focus of this painting is the clock tower that takes up the middle third of the composition. The dark portions along the bottom of the painting anchor the scene and allows the protruding tower to stand out as the focal point. Adding streaks of raw blues and reds add detail and abnormalities to the otherwise monochrome painting.

France 34

05 | Watercolor in Architecture

Dilapidated Barn This piece’s primary focus is to highlight the tarnish and age of the stand alone barn. The scattered brush strokes along with a wide variety of color makes this work take a life of its own. The simple strokes of raw reds and blues create highlights that draw the eye toward them.

Changing Seasons In the Midwest the changing of seasons between Fall and Winter create beautiful colors and tones in the landscape. This piece uses a mix of warm and cool colors to portray both of these seasons in the landscape and on the built form. The strong shadows hint at a setting sun to the left of the image that creates a warm tone on the painting.

“Architecture is a kind of making of a validity. It isn’t an answer to something; it’s a validity, like we’re not the answers to anything, like a mountain is no answer to anything. It’s a validity — it’s that — stronger than the truth.” -Louis Kahn
