Dear Graduates,

I am pleased to extend sincere congratulations to each of you, the members of the Tri-County Technical College Class of 2024. You have reached a significant milestone toward achieving your career and personal goals. We celebrate your accomplishments and a job well done.

Earning a college degree, diploma or certificate is an outstanding achievement for every student, and, in particular, for those who are the first in their families to graduate from college. Student success is our top priority. This means that, when you succeed, we succeed. We applaud you for the tenacity, hard work and dedication you showed during your time as a student at Tri-County Technical College.

I am certain the education you received at Tri-County will provide the foundation and career preparation you need to succeed in life and work. You are well positioned to meet future challenges and opportunities because of your talents, skills, education and strong work ethic.

I want to thank faculty and staff for helping to prepare our graduates for the future. 2024 Presidential Medallion for instructional excellence aMy Borders english instructor in the arts and sciences division

The medallion is presented each year to the instructor who has contributed the most during the academic year to the profession of teaching, to the development of the College and to the students.

Amy Borders’ commitment to student success, through her innovative teaching practices and co-curricular student support activities, earned her the highest award presented to faculty.

She was honored with the Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence at the College’s spring convocation.

Borders has taught English in the Arts and Sciences Division for the past 17 years.

“Amy creates opportunities for students to individually learn and connect with learning,” said Jennifer Hulehan, dean of the Arts and Sciences Division.

She noted Borders’ willingness to be available to students in both teaching and advising. “Amy regularly volunteers to find new ways to help students. She takes her job as an advisor to heart; her care and concern for students is evident in nearly every interaction she has with them.”

Borders has maintained a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous improvement as demonstrated through her participation as an inaugural member of the Rural Educator Academy (REA) over the past year. The work of the REA cohort has been intentionally focused on discussing and understanding the needs of under-resourced students and developing specific success strategies to meaningfully connect with them individually - both in and out of the classroom.

For the group’s capstone project, REA members partnered with the College’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Council and United Way of Anderson County to offer a Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS). This experience sensitizes community participants to the realities of poverty and creates awareness of the challenges under-resourced individuals face every day.

Borders co-presented on this initiative at the 2023 Community Colleges of Appalachia conference in Asheville, N.C.

She serves as an integral part of the College’s graduation ceremonies by serving as a marshal.

She also is a longtime faculty advisor for Alpha Zeta Beta (AZB), TCTC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), a national honors society for two-year colleges. She served as an advisor from 2016 to 2023, earning the Advisor of the Year award in 2022.

Linda Jameison, vice president of student support and engagement at TCTC, said, “I have always been impressed with Amy’s energy and desire to help students achieve what they didn’t know they could. She meets them where they are and connects intentionally with each individual.”

Borders holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Clemson University.

Burdette

chief

of united Way of anderson county

Carol Burdette has served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Way of Anderson County since 2002. Under her leadership, United Way has improved the health, education and financial stability of the Anderson community.

After 22 years as CEO, preceded by 13 years of voluntary service, Burdette will retire at the end of the year.

A Pendleton native and lifelong Anderson County resident, Burdette has been involved with community organizations as a volunteer or staff member for more than 35 years. For 22 of those years, she served in elected office for the Town of Pendleton as a council member from 1987 to 1997 and as mayor from 1997 to 2009.

Among many of her volunteer positions, she served as board chair of the Anderson Area YMCA, chair of the United Way of Anderson County Campaign and Board of Directors, chair of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and chair of the South Carolina Association of Non-Profit Organizations. She is a past president of the Rotary Club of Anderson and a Rotary Past District Governor. Burdette was president of the Municipal Association of South Carolina and was the first female chair of Ten at The Top. She also served a six-year term on the Board of Directors of Sister Cities International.

Recently Burdette completed 11 years on the Anderson Oconee Mental Health Board and a 12-year term on the Board of Trustees of Spartanburg Methodist College.

Currently she serves on the Board of Visitors of Anderson University, as board president of AdvanceSC, and is chair-elect of Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

She is a member of Pendleton United Methodist Church where she has served as lay leader and as a member of the Council of Stewards and Board of Trustees. She also serves as a lay speaker and has served on district committees and as a lay delegate to the S.C. United Methodist Conference.

Burdette has been honored with the Pointing the Way Award, the Athena Award, and the Leadership Anderson Alumni Award. She received a presidential citation from Southern Wesleyan University and was named 2014 Economic Development Ambassador for Anderson County by former Governor Nikki Haley. She was also named one of 15 over 50 by the Independent Mail and Non-Profit Director of the Year by the Anderson Chamber of Commerce. In 2020, Burdette was named one of the 25 Most Influential Women of the Upstate by GSA Business Report. She received the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian award, and Rotary’s prestigious Service Above Self Award, the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award, and the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award. In December of 2023, she received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Anderson University by President Evans Whitaker. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Wesleyan University.

gonfalons

The five academic gonfalons on display represent the College and its four academic divisions. Gonfalons, which are banners hung from crosspieces on poles, have been used since medieval times as symbols of state or office. The navy gonfalon with the official College Seal represents the institution as a whole. The gonfalons for the four academic divisions display the division names and the colors associated with the academic disciplines of the divisions: Arts and Sciences – white and science gold; Business and Public Services – crimson, drab, light blue, midnight blue, peacock blue, and science gold; Health Education – apricot, gray, and sage green; and Engineering and Industrial Technology – orange and science gold.

Mace

The Tri-County Technical College Mace is carried by the president of the Faculty Senate, who leads the academic procession at commencement. Historically, the use of a mace dates back to the Middle Ages and was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. In commencement exercises, the mace specifically indicates the authority of the College president to award degrees. The College Mace is made of pecan and brass and depicts the official College Seal. It was designed and manufactured by students in the Engineering and Industrial Technology Division.

Academic regalia worn by persons in the procession varies in style and color according to the highest degree earned. The border and edging of the hood are in the color of the discipline for which the degree was earned as follows:
