One of six qualifying events for the Northern California region, the winner of this competition moves on to the Northern California Championship January 19. A total of 17 teams participated, eight from Fremont. Teams were composed of up to 10 students and one mentor. The game called “Get Over It,” included two alliances who used their robot to clean out baton dispensers and put 6-inch PVC tubes in stationary or rolling goals. Alliances – of red and blue - were made by combining two teams. The game was played on a square field composed of mountains, bridges, and two cliffs. While several teams received awards, a Fremont alliance comcontinued on page 31

ecked out in goggles and matching t-shirts, teams huddled together to discuss their plans, and form strategies to improve before the next round began. On December 19, high school students from across Fremont gathered at Irvington High School for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) – “Get Over It.” Introduction and set-up began at 7 a.m. and the finals and awards ceremony lasted until 9 p.m. As described by FTC, teams used the “Tetrix robot kit, which leverages the Mindstorms NXT controller with powerful motors, sophisticated sensors and metal hardware and gears to create a robot to solve the annual challenge.” INDEX

SuperFreakonomics “SUPERFREAKONOMICS (ILLUSTRATED EDITION)” BY STEVEN D. LEVITT STEPHEN J. DUBNER Your budget is connected to your income. The income’s connected to a sales goal. The sales goal’s connected to the economy. The economy’s connected to consumer spending. And consumer spending’s connected to the ankle bone. Flow-charts, studies, old songs, and graphs can help you comprehend cause-and-effect in business, but when it comes to the world as a whole, things are messier. Or are they? Read the newly-illustrated “SuperFreakonomics” by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner and you’ll see connections and corollaries everywhere. Uganda is a fair drive from Michigan, as anyone with a GPS can tell you. So how do you explain that babies born in Uganda this May and babies born in Michigan in the same month will share a higher-than-average rate of disabilities as adults? The explanation, say Levitt and Dubner, comes from freakonomics, a word they coined to account for the freaky things that happen in the world, especially when it comes to human influence. People, the authors found, respond to incentives that are not predictable, and those responses result in unintended consequences that start a chain of events. Separate chains may be related in ways that are seemingly incongruent.
Take, for instance, those beautiful New York City brownstones. There’s a reason they were built high and imposing, and horses are almost completely to blame. And speaking of houses, sex and real estate don’t often overlap, but this book shows how it happens.
As for those private matters, how is it that prostitutes in Chicago are like department store Santas? Are Ladies of the Evening – or is any entrepreneur – selling themselves short, or can they utilize an economic fact to boost income without losing customers? Is it possible that there are advantages to things that seem disastrous? Yes, say the authors, just as there are hidden penalties for good news. Although the “Shoe Bomber” never caused loss of life, for instance, his actions cost travelers nearly six hundred million minutes a year, or the equivalent of 14 lifetimes.
But back to those babies in Uganda and Michigan. Can their parents give them a leg-up on becoming professional athletes? Nope. Sadly, the month of May could be doubly unlucky for them… In the illustrated “SuperFreakonomics”, authors Steven D. Levitt (an economist) & Stephen J. Dubner (a journalist) offer a wry romp through trivia, business, economy, and fluff, making you think, laugh, and run to your computer to look up more information. But if you read “SuperFreakonomics” when it came out last year, you may wonder if this is the same book. The answer is yes, but… Yes, you’ll find mostly the same words, but this illustrated version contains charts, pictures, and fun drawings. Yes, but this book is more a browser’s delight. Yes, but it’s zippier and the sidebars are literary peanuts: you can’t stop eating them up. Yes, it’s basically the same book, but improved. If you’ve got a curious mind and love to play with stats and facts, don’t miss the illustrated “Superfreakonomics”. For you, it’s definitely a book to connect with. c.2010, Wm. In August 2010, the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) expanded its Consumer Assistance Program to cover many of the same vehicles as the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Vehicle Buyback Program. Expansion of the state’s vehicle retirement program will allow the Air District to end the regional Vehicle Buyback Program on December 31, 2010. “The Air District’s Vehicle Buyback Program has proved to be a very cost-effective way to reduce pollution on Bay Area roads,” said Jack Broadbent, exADVERTISING REPRESENTATIVE Colleen Ganaye ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS Pahoua Sayaovang Patricia Cragin BOOKKEEPING Vandana Dua CARTOONS Angelo Lopez PHOTOGRAPHERS Don Jedlovec Mike Heightchew

ecutive officer of the Air District. “We encourage Bay Area residents to continue to retire older polluting vehicles by taking advantage of financial incentives available through the State Consumer Assistance Program.” Individuals interested in receiving $1,000 to retire their cars and light trucks can visit www.smogcheck.ca.gov or call 1-800-952-5210 for details on BAR’s Consumer Assistance Program. In the next few months, the amount will increase to $1,500 for qualified low-income motorists. Since 1996, the Air District’s Vehicle Buy Back program has retired over 50,000 cars, vans, pickup trucks and SUVs. Removal of each pre1990 vehicle from Bay Area roads reduces annual air pollution by an estimated 75 pounds. In 2010, 6,000 vehicles were retired, representing
248 tons of air pollution. The Air District continues to operate its Smoking Vehicle Assistance Program which notifies motorists when their vehicle has been observed on Bay Area roadways smoking excessively. This situation requires vehicle repair and causes the engine to use more fuel and run less reliably. Smoking vehicles are a significant health problem for air quality generally and also impacts indoor air in the vehicles. The public can find out about smoking vehicle health impacts, connect to vehicle retirement assistance programs or become a clean air advocate by visiting www.smokingvehiclehelp.org. Sunol Glen School Board meeting review BY ALYSON WHITAKER The December 13 school board meeting began with the swearing in of newly elected board members Gerry Beemiller and Diane Everett. The two join Neil Davies, who will continue on as President of the Sunol Glen School Board for another one-year term. Following the swearing in, a brief celebratory reception was held before the official meeting was called to order. Seventh grade teacher Suzette Takei made a presentation about the CPR-7 program, in which the 7th and 8th grade classes are participating. The Alameda Health Department has partnered with Alameda County School Districts and Fire Departments to increase awareness about the importance of early response in the event of a medical emergency. It typically takes paramedics three to seven minutes to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency. If the patient does not have a heartbeat during these critical first moments, their
brain is deprived of oxygen. Research has shown that only about 20 percent of patients who are without a heartbeat for this amount of time survive the incident. Of those, only about 10 percent are able to regain full function and return to a normal life. Receiving chest compressions following a heartstopping event pumps oxygen to the brain, even when mouthto-mouth breathing is not given. This increases the survival rate up to 80 percent. The CPR-7 program teaches the basics of CPR to young people, primarily 7th graders, throughout the county. The 17,000 students receive a training kit including a dummy, and are trained in the techniques as well as encouraged to go out and train five more people. To date, the 25 seventh graders at Sunol Glen have trained 143 others in CPR, and the 18 eighth graders have trained 118 people. The program is tied into both the health and science curriculums, and has been received with great enthusiasm by students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
A representative from the Community Club gave an update on current events and activities. A big need this year is improved technology, both in the classrooms and computer lab. The Community Club has allocated $5,000 of their annual budget to assist in the efforts to increase the availability and quality of the technology at the school. A grant from NASA Ames will be providing a large supply of three-year old computer workstations, printers, and laptops to the school, replacing the current outdated machines. In addition, the Community Club is teaming with the school Technology Committee to research improved Internet speed options as well as the availability of wireless Internet service in the classrooms. Board member Gerry Beemiller suggested working with the community and downtown businesses to research options for a downtown wireless Internet “hub,” similar to what Pleasanton and Livermore currently have. This would provide increased Inter-

net speed to the school, as well as free access to visitors in the Main Street area of Sunol. Jeff Potter, of the Alameda County Office of Education, presented the First Interim budget report. The 2009/2010 fiscal year ended slightly better than expected, which has improved the financial outlook of the district for the 2010/2011 year. However, he cautioned that the future of state funding to education is still grim, and current projections show the district will have a deficit of nearly $100,000 by the 2012/2013 school year unless cuts are made or additional revenue sources are secured. Due to delays at the county level, the board did not have the opportunity to review the First Interim report prior to the meeting. As a result, board members were not comfortable voting to approve the budget report without further discussion. They have 72 hours to review, discuss, and request changes or revisions to the budget before submitting their approval and final First Interim
budget update to the County. A representative from the SPEAC Up (School Preservation & Enhancement Action Committee) was in attendance. The SPEAC Up group’s primary goal is to seek out ways to raise money to help and support the school. The group has applied for a couple of grants and is in the process of establishing the Sunol Glen School Foundation. The non-profit foundation would provide the community and other potential donors a way to support the school financially, and would team with the school administration and board members to determine the best use for the funds. The next meeting of the SPEAC Up committee will be held on January 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. All are invited to attend. During the public comments portion of the meeting, community member Barbara Dröher Kline stood up and voiced her support of the school. While she does not have continued on page 30

WHAT’S HAPPENING’S TRI-CITY VOICE
SUBMITTED BY JOHNNY NG It started simply as a way to keep his Hayward neighborhood streets clean. During his twice-weekly morning jog, Greg Galati, MFT, a Kaiser Permanente family therapist based at the Union City Medical Offices, would bring a grocery bag with him to pick up litter along his run. Soon, he was filling up 8 to 10 bags of garbage and his 2-3 mile run quickly became a different type of exercise. “I would jog, stop, pick up litter, and then continue,” he said. After a few months, Galati learned about the Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task Force, a grassroots-based cleanup effort pushed by Hayward Mayor Michael Sweeney. He met with the task force director and decided to create a neighborhood volunteer team to help clean up local streets in the Glassbrook area, where he has lived for the past 10 years. Then, during a National Night Out block party in 2009, Galati convinced four of his long-time neighbors to become part of this volunteer effort. Among his neighbors was fellow psychiatrist David Ringo.
The volunteer team started with a once per month street cleanup effort, on the first Saturday morning for two
hours. They concentrated on a five-block long stretch of Huntwood Avenue. The Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task Force provided the litter grabbers and garbage bags, and later would pick up the filled garbage bags. “We enjoyed the camaraderie and fun as we were helping to improve the look of our streets,” said Galati. “But we knew more was needed because the litter quickly returned.” Six months later, Glassbrook Elementary School principal Ruben Pulido noticed a cleanup captain picking up litter from the school’s lawn. They chatted and Pulido immediately thought this would be an opportunity for his students to become involved in their community and take pride in it. In March, Galati’s team and Glassbrook School partnered for the first neighborhood-wide cleanup event. Prin-

cipal Pulido rallied the students on the importance of respect for themselves and their communities. More than 115 students and their families turned out for this event. They split into teams and covered almost four miles of neighborhood streets, amassing tons of garbage and debris. “We had an amazing turnout,” Galati said. “It was touching to see the sense of pride so many of us have in our neighborhood.” In early October, Galati was honored by the City of Hayward for spearheading the cleanup efforts in his neighborhood and for his active participation in the Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task Force. At the “Hero’s Banquet” attended by more than 700 people, he received the prestigious Mayor’s Award. The special cleanup effort involving the families in the Grassbrook area and the students of the elementary school has now become a monthly event. Galati and his team now have 10 “Cleanup Captains” who keep their block or section of streets clean once or twice a week. “When people see a clean street, they are less likely to litter it,” he said. “We take pride in keeping out streets clean and looking good.”

the Year Jason Livermore. “Bob is a Hayward original,” said Hayward City Councilman Bill Quirk. “He has worked both in his business and as a volunteer to improve the Hayward community.” Sakai grew up in Hayward, graduating from Tennyson High School, then UC Berkeley and Hastings College of Law. He practiced law with the Hayward firm of Haley, Purchio, Sakai & Smith for 33 years. He has had his own practice since 2008, specializing in zoning and use permit applications. Because of his experience in probate, wills and trusts, he serves as a California state probate referee, a position he was appointed to by the state controller in 1993. Sakai’s contributions as a community volunteer include past service on the boards of the Boy Scouts of America Tres Ranchos District, Japanese American Services of the East Bay, Eden Township Japanese Community Center, Hayward Ed-
ucation Foundation, One Hundred Club of Alameda County, the United Way, and Cal State East Bay Foundation, Inc. His work with local non-profits included handling the incorporation of cHime-in, the organization that supports music programs in Hayward schools; the PC Clubhouse; and the Hayward-Funabashi Sister City Committee. As a 27-year member of the Hayward Rotary Club, Sakai has served as president, won the Outstanding Rotarian Award, and headed numerous club philanthropic activities, including presiding over the club’s foundation from 2000 to 2006, when it reached $1 million in assets. Sakai presided at the club’s meeting Dec. 13 when the foundation dispersed a total of $30,000 in checks over 18 community service organizations. wo local dentists were recently recognized for excellence in ethics, leadership and professionalism when they were invited to become Fellows of the American College of Dentists (ACD). This singular honor is bestowed upon just three percent of practicing dentists in the United States. Longtime Fremont dentist Bernard Stewart, D.D.S., and Ruchi Sahota, D.D.S., who has been a dentist in Fremont for the past six years, were inducted into the ACD last October at the organization’s 2010 meeting in Orlando, Florida. “The exciting thing about being part of the ACD is that it is dedicated to promoting the value of ethics and leadership among dentists,” said Dr. Stewart, who has practiced in Fremont for the past 40 years. “They also help the public become more aware of what to expect from a professional dentist.” The process for becoming an ACD Fellow is quite rigorous. A dentist cannot apply but must be nominated by a sponsor, who is required to provide documentation about the nominee’s merits and accomplishments. “I am very humbled to be among such a respected group
of peers,” commented Dr. Sahota who, at age 28, was the youngest person ever to be inducted into the ACD. “As dentists and ACD Fellows, there is
so much we can do for our profession and our communities.” Both dentists are involved in family-based dental practices. Dr. Stewart practices with his son Mark Stewart, D.D.S., and Dr. Sahota practices with her mother, Maninder Nijjar, D.D.S., who has been a dentist in Fremont for the past 30 years. In addition to his dental practice, Dr. Stewart has been an elected member of the
Washington Township Health Care District Board of Directors for the past eight years and is currently the board’s outgoing president. In November, he

Celebrate Fremont was a community wide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the City of Fremont. (NOAA) will operate it. GOES-R will be able to help flight controllers plan safe flight paths. It will provide quick and accurate data about not only volcanic ash plumes,

t. Merapi is blowing its top—again. This volcano in Indonesia erupts every few years, making big trouble for the people who live close by. This hotheaded mountain also causes problems for airplanes. On November 6, Mt. Merapi’s ash plume rose to 55,000 feet (16 kilometers)—way higher than airplanes usually fly. The plume also spread out 220 miles (350 kilometers) to the west and southwest. Volcanic ash is not like ash from a forest fire. Volcanic ash is more like tiny, floating particles of broken glass. It’s very bad to breathe and very hard on airplane engines. Even far from the volcano where the plume is almost invisible, volcanic ash particles can do a lot of damage. So, if the plumes can be invisible, how do pilots know where it’s safe to fly? Satellites can help. Even a thin cloud of ash reflects light differently from air and from rain clouds. With help from a computer, satellite images can highlight volcanic ash. This information is reported to air traffic controllers, who warn pilots to stay out of the broken glass!
The erupting Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in Iceland this past April and May (2010) cancelled many flights to and from Europe. You can see why pilots would like to be warned before flying into such plumes of tiny shards of broken glass!
Satellites provide other vital information for aviators. Sometimes thunder clouds suddenly overshoot their normally flat tops with a sudden updraft of turbulent air. Even though a plane is flying above the cloud, it can still get caught in a sudden pocket of turbulence and

here are many professional sports teams and recognizable athletes in the Bay Area. There are also many “faces in the crowd,” those whose accomplishments have flown under the radar. One of those faces whom you may not be familiar with – though that might change in the near future – is Robert Przepioski. Robbie is a 20-year-old Newark resident who is a nationally-accomplished figure skater. In January, Robbie and his pairs skating partner Janelle Unger will be competing in the Senior Nationals Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Robbie started skating at an early age – roller skating, that is – which he did
WHAT’S HAPPENING’S TRI-CITY VOICE
competitively starting at age 5. Robbie and his partner Amanda Ballard won the Nationals four years in a row, but moved
from the wheels to the ice after his partner made the transition, and his parents felt there were better career opportunities in ice skating. But in order to compete in the Junior Nationals, then 14-year-old Robbie would have to make the leap from a beginner ice skater to an advanced level. To do this, he had to pass 10 tests in six months. He accomplished this task and made the Nationals. Afterward, he and his partner went their separate ways. “I thought I was done with skating after that,” Robbie said, “but my friends, family and coaches said I had talent and pushed me to focus on my singles.” For three years, Robbie didn’t find another pairs partner so he concentrated on singles, with impressive results: He was the Skate San Francisco champion in 2010, the Silicon Valley Open champion in
2009 and 2010, and a regular competitor in the Pacific Coast Sectionals since 2007. His path back to pairs skating began when he started working as a skating coach at Sharks Ice in San Jose. One day, his boss Dave Delago – also a coach at Sharks Ice – asked if Robbie wanted to start pairs skating again; there was a young, talented skater, who Delago was coaching, who had seen Robbie on the ice and was interested in forming a partnership with him. Robbie was open to the idea and was introduced to his current partner, Janelle Unger, who is currently a senior at Willow Glen High School in San Jose. Robbie has high hopes for his team, which include working towards a chance to compete in the 2014 Olympics in Russia. Despite the fact that they are a relatively new team, the duo’s chemistry has helped them to compete with teams that have several more years of experience. “Our supporters are always amazed how fast we were able to ad the more complicated lifts and movements to our programs. We love it when they tell us they can’t believe how fast we have moved up in skating,” said Robbie. Robbie and Janelle have won their share of accolades, including the 2009 ISI world championship, the Silicon Valley Open title in 2009 (they got the silver medal in 2010) and the CCIA championship in 2008 and ’09. At home in Newark, Robbie lives with his parents Stanley and Christeen, and his two twin brothers Joshua and Andrew, who are a year older than Robbie. Having a pair of twin brothers a year older than him helped to hone Robbie’s competitive instincts.
December 24, 2010
“We were always competitive against each other,” he said. “They were always trying to make me better.” Robbie’s dream is to be an Olympiclevel athlete, and he has put a lot of hours into pursuing that dream. “I spent my high school years getting up earlier than the crack of dawn so I could get a couple hours practice in before classes, only to return to the ice rink after school to work on my moves some more,” said Robbie. “At first, I thought my only goal would be to try for the Olympics in singles and follow in the steps of some of my skating heroes, superstars like Brian Boitano and Evan Lysancek. Now my dream has gotten bigger as I hope to be the first to try and take a shot at winning or placing at the Olympics in both singles and pairs. “Even after that,” Robbie continued, “I would never imagine life without skating, as I coach the newer skaters and show my joy of performing at shows in the area.”

Chabot College wrestler Craig Sherman earned All-American status in the California Community College State Wrestling Championships which took place Thursday, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Dec. 11, at Victor Valley College in Victorville. Sherman, of Oakland, is a graduate of Oakland Technical High School. Chabot College sent five wrestlers and an alternate to the championships. Following are the results: Sherman (157 lbs.), an unranked wrestler, placed third in the state and also became an All-American; Janik Santana (125), an unranked wrestler, placed sixth in the state; Alex Williams (133), an unranked wrestler, placed sixth in the state; Milo Anderson (184), ranked fifth in the state, but after getting injured in his quarterfinals match, ended up placing seventh in the state. The top four places at the state championships earn All-American status. As a team, Chabot placed 10th in the state. Fresno State won the championship with a score of 148.5.
UC Premier TOPS, a U-9 girls Division I soccer team, concluded their inaugural season by winning the championship of the Juventus Coppa d’Oro Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 11, through Sunday, Dec. 12. The TOPS captured the NORCAL Premier Silver Division league title and played in seven tournaments and jamborees throughout the year. TOPS finished with an impressive 26-8-3 overall record, scoring 102 goals while allowing 38. UC Premier TOPS had just 11 players on the roster throughout the season; they were able to achieve success with hard work, strong coaching and a lethal combination of speed and aggressiveness. TOPS players include Annika Kennedy, Logan Bell, Jordan Hong, Kyanna Cruz, Alex Carpio, Dawson Bell, Natalia Bartolome, Andreea Dan, Jessica McNair, Marwa Nekrawesh and Anmol Gill. Coached by Rob Hernandez, the TOPS will be holding tryouts for the 2011 team in February.
Local college update BY GARY VAN DEN HEUVEL PHOTO BY DON JEDLOVEC Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Cal State University East Bay continued to struggle in the early portion of their respective seasons, with each team losing both of their games last week. CSUEB men traveled to UC San Diego, and despite 21 points from Mark Samuels, fell 69-55 after keeping the game close in the first half – the Pioneers trailed 34-30 at the break. Roshun Wynne scored 15 in the losing effort. UCSD was led by Christian Hatch’s 16 points. On Dec. 19, the Pioneers hosted Sonoma State and despite a horrific beginning in which Sonoma broke out to a 28-11 lead, CSUEB rallied to pull within eight points at halftime. The second half was much like the first, in that the Pioneers fell further behind, but rallied furiously in the final minutes only to succumb by a 68-62 final score. Wynne was
the leading scorer for the Pioneers, with 21 points, 16 coming in the second half. At week’s end, East Bay is 2-7 overall and winless in the
CCAA after four conference games. CSUEB’s women’s team started the week with a 61-37 loss at UC San Diego. Lauren
Lucchesi was East Bay’s scoring leader with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds. Claudia Nelson scored 11, and Marlene MacMillan added eight with nine rebounds. The Pioneers returned home on Dec. 19 and made a valiant attempt to come back, but ultimately saw their record fall to 0-9 with a 60-56 loss to Sonoma State. Nelson led the Pioneers with 13 points. Lucchesi and Sarah Finlay each scored 11 points. MacMillan nearly had a double-double, with 10 boards and nine points. The local junior colleges had considerably more upbeat weeks, especially at Ohlone College, whose men’s and women’s team each won tournaments. The men began the West Valley event with a 66-51 whipping of Diablo Valley College, who came into the game ranked fourth in the state. The Renegades, who are currently ranked in the state’s top 20, were led by Levon Grey’s 20 points. Following the upset
win, Ohlone rolled to the tournament title with victories over Alameda (by an 87-44 score) in the semis, and a 77-68 final win over Siskiyous. Ohlone’s women did their school proud with a win in the CSM tournament in San Mateo. Coach Julia Allender’s squad dispatched Reedley in the first round, Butte College in the semifinals, and finished with a 72-59 thumping of Santa Monica on Dec. 19 to take home the title. Chabot College’s basketball teams had a quiet week. The men’s team won their only game of the week, a 94-68 spanking of visiting Modesto College. The Gladiators spread the wealth, with five players scoring in double digits: Kyle Luckett (21 points), Joshua De La Torre (18 points), Jourdan DeMuynck (11), Howie Manzo (11) and Colin Chadwick (10). Chabot’s women’s team was idle until Wednesday, Dec. 22, against Butte College at Chabot (score unavailable at press).

The Foundation, in the sixth year of its classroom grant program, received applications this year for 26 projects representing the efforts of 29 educators, from kindergarten through high school. Requests were accepted for up to $500, and the District’s Health Education and Resource Team (HEART) accepted applications for grants of up to $200 for projects promoting a healthy lifestyle. A total of 16 projects were selected, involving 17 educators. They received their awards as Santa and his “elves” – including New Haven Superintendent Kari McVeigh, Foundation Executive Director Barbara Aro-Valle, Foundation President Cindy O’Brien and others– toured the schools to surprise the winners in front of their students. Cathy Schoon, who teaches kindergarten at Pioneer Elementary School, became the first teacher in the history of the program to win two awards in a single year. She received $498.70 from the Foundation for her “Mobile Listening Center” project and $200 from HEART for continued on page 29

What Women Want: The Global Market Turns Female Friendly “Go ask your father.” Yeah, there’s a good chance you heard that a time or two during your childhood. Or this: “Just wait til your father gets home.” And though your mother uttered those two sentences more times than you can remember, and though they both were enough to make your blood turn to ice, it was all just an act. The truth is that everyone knew who granted grant permission, meted out punishment, and held the reigns: Mom. Some things never change, as you’ll learn in the new book “What Women Want” by Paco Underhill. Everywhere you look, whether in business or elsewhere, you can see the influence that women have on the way we buy, travel, and live. That’s no surprise since about 70% of American women work
outside the home, all women are consumers, and many of them control their own finances. If your business doesn’t acknowledge and respect what they want and invite them to see for themselves, Underhill says, “it’s bad business.” A woman, for instance, notices when a store is unclean. If there’s dirt on the floor or on the shelves, she’ll remember that. She won’t forget bad smells or lack of hygiene. And
the bathroom better be spotless, or she’ll never be back. At a time when headlines scream of danger, smart hoteliers accommodate women by not loudly broadcasting their name, room number, and lack of traveling companion at check-in. Smart retailers add cashiers so that women aren’t rushed when check-out is complete (watch a woman rearrange her purse sometime). Smart banks do it, too. It’s easy to see the influences that women have on homes (more storage, big bathrooms), home offices (multitasking equipment), web design (the biggest online sites lack the industrial look for a reason), home repair (brightly-colored tools in the tool department), technology (women hate “even the merest whiff that a male employee is in any way talking down
his nose to them.”), and more. “Why don’t retailers get it?” Underhill asks. “Why aren’t they following the money?” Perhaps because they haven’t read this book – yet. Non-retail businesses might not think they need to read it. One browse through “What Women Want” will prove otherwise. Author Paco Underhill is the founder and CEO of Envirosell, Inc., a business that studies human behavior in retail, service, online, and home environments. He’s made it his job to know how and why we buy, and what he’s discovered is fascinating. In this book, you’ll learn why vacuum cleaners sell better to men, why change is not always good, and why department stores are often empty these days. You’ll see the reason for the shape of displays, why you
should strategically add staff, and which three little words sum up the female shopper’s wants. Oh, and you’ll learn why your business – any business – should care. If you want to stay relevant in this economy, or if you’re just curious about human behavior, you’re going to love what you read. “What Women Want” ain’t your Daddy’s marketing book. c.2010, Simon & Schuster $25.00 / $32.00 Canada 214 pages, includes index

ashington’s ‘gift’ to tax payers was signed into law by President Obama on December 17th. While the argument is still raging behind closed doors, we the tax payers now have some additional clarity to guide us through our year-end tax planning. In a nutshell, our ‘gift’ (depending on how you want to look at it) includes the following: • All Bush-era taxes will be extended for two more years for all American families. Tax brackets will stay at 10 percent, 15 percent, 25 percent, 28 percent, 33 percent and 35 percent through Dec. 31, 2012. • Higher exemption amounts for AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax): For 2010, the AMT exempt income levels increase to $47,450 for individuals and $72,450 for married filing jointly, and will increase again for 2011. • 13-month extension of unemployment benefits. The extension is expected to help about 9 million Americans. • One-year Social Security tax reduction for employees, from 6.2 percent to 4.2

percent for individuals. • Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and the tax credit increases for college tuition (American Opportunity Tax Credit) adopted in 2009 as part of the economic stimulus package will be extended. • Businesses will be allowed to deduct 100 percent of capital investments in 2011, a doubling from the current write-off figure of 50 percent. • The agreement also calls for holding the estate tax at 35 percent for two years, with a $5 million floor for individuals. We recommend the following tried-and-true tips for your year-end tax planning: 1. Make an Investment in Developing Small Business. For QSBS purchased between September 27, 2010 and December 31, 2010, a zero percent effective income tax rate will apply to at least the first $10 million of gain upon its ultimate sale if applicable requirements are met. Excluded gain from these investments will not be treated as a preference item for AMT purposes, so the benefits extend equally to AMT taxpayers. 2. Sell ‘loser’ stocks to offset gains. You may have a mix of winner and ‘loser’ stocks – if you have a big gain, sell some of the ‘loser’ stocks. You can erase
a large gain with a corresponding loss. 3. Expense Business Assets under Section 179. If you own your own business and have plans to buy office furniture, equipment or other tangible business property, you might consider doing so before year-end to take advantage of the temporarily increased Section 179 deduction and/or the temporary 50% / 100% bonus depreciation. For 2010, the new rule increases the maximum amount a taxpayer may expense under Section 179 to $500,000 and increases the phase-out threshold amount to $2 million. In addition, a first-year 100% bonus depreciation deduction is available for qualified properties acquired and placed in service during the period from September 8, 2010 through December 31, 2011. First-year 50% bonus depreciation deduction is still available for the qualified purchase from January 1, 2010 to September 7, 2010. 4. Put the maximum amount into retirement accounts. Bump up your 401k contribution for the maximum allowed contribution ($16,500 for year 2010). Payroll deductions can increase your takehome pay because they reduce your taxable income. Some employers allow catch up for the current year. Other types of qualified retired plans are available to you if you

own your own business. In a defined contribution plan, the maximum that may be contributed to a participant’s account is limited to lesser of $49,000 or 100% of the participant’s compensation. In a defined benefit plan, the maximum annual benefit for the year cannot exceed the lesser of $195,000 or 100% of the participant’s average compensation for his or her highest three (3) consecutive calendar years. 5. Do a Roth IRA Conversion. For 2010, no matter how high your income is, you are allowed to take advantage of the Roth conversion strategy. If your income level prevented a 2009 Roth conversion, you can do one in 2010. There is a novel tax deferral opportunity with respect to 2010 Roth IRA conversion the tax that you’ll owe as a result of the rollover will be payable half in 2011 and half in 2012, unless you elect to pay the entire tax bill in 2010. Moreover, if your conversion decision turns out to be a bad idea, you have until October 15, 2011 to recharacterize (unwind) your converted account(s). 6. Prepay state and/or local tax. If you expect your income to be lower and you won’t be affected by the AMT (sometimes, the acceleration of deductions can continued on page 29

cost you money if it triggers the AMT) you should make additional state and local tax payments to take the deduction this year. 7. Make charitable contributions. Donate and save receipts for deductions on your return. Donate stock that is growing. If you have appreciated stock that has been held for more than 1 year, hang on to cash but donate stock. With this strategy you avoid tax on appreciation but can deduct the full value of stock – everyone wins. If you are 70 1/2 and older, you may elect to take a tax-free distribution from an IRA to public charities. 8. Think green – take a tax credit. A great way to cut energy cost and save up to $1,500 in income taxes is to make energy efficiency improvements to your principal residence. The $1,500 maximum does not apply to geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, solar panels, fuel cells, and wind generators. These are all eligible for a 30% tax credit with no upper limit. 9. Tax credits. Tax credits can be more valuable than deductions. Here are some of the ‘big’ ones: a. Child Tax Credit: $1,000 for each qualified child under the age of 17 b. American Opportunity Credit: a maximum allowable credit is $2,500

“Growing a Vegetable Garden in Kindergarten.” The Foundation funded 12 projects, HEART funded two, Fremont Bank funded one, and longtime Foundation member Art Kuhlmann and his wife, Cheryl, funded the other. With these awards, a total of 99 New Haven educators have received more than $36,000 for projects that directly impact instruction since the program was started during the 2005-06 school year. This year’s recipients and their schools and projects: Foundation awards: Lynne DeForest (Pioneer Elementary,

c. Lifetime Learning Credit: Up to $2,000 – part time students can qualify. d. Child Independent Care Credit: If you paid someone to care for your child(ren) under the age of 13 so you could work, you are entitled to up to $3,000 paid for one qualifying individual or $6,000 for two. e. Adoption Credit: $13,170 per adopted child and it is refundable. 10. Gift Your Money at the Lowest Rate. For the 2010 tax year, the top gift tax rate is 35% with an exemption of $1 million and the generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax has been suspended (only for the current year). For years 2011 and 2012, the top transfer tax rate remains 35%, but the exemption increases to $5 million. Additionally, the new law reunifies the federal estate tax exemption and the federal gift tax exemption, meaning the lifetime gift tax exemption rises to $5 million per person ($10 million per couple). Now is a good time for you to consider when to make a gift to your child and grandchildren and what estate tax planning strategy you should take. 11. Weigh the tax election for 2010 estates: Estate tax is repealed in 2010. However, the executors of 2010 estates over $5 million with highly appreciated as-
sets should consider whether to make an election to subject the estate to the new law. If the executor selects to do so, the first $5 million of estate assets will exempt from federal estate taxes, while the amount exceeding $5 million may be subject to estate tax. However, the entire estate will receive full step up in basis. 12. Take advantage of “portability” rule for an estate: New tax provision allows a surviving spouse to utilize an unused exemption from the spouse who has passed away, so a married couple can exempt up to $10 million. If this is the case for your family, do not forget to make the election on the estate tax return to take advantage of this new “portability” rule.
As always, these are general guidelines and we suggest you consult with a tax professional regarding your particular situation before taking any action. Toys for Tots ‘thank you’ SUBMITTED BY CHRISTINA PAUL The doctors and staff of Fremont Animal Hospital would like to express tremendous gratitude to our clients and the community for helping to make smiles brighter this Holiday Season through your contributions to our Toys-for-Tots campaign. This year not only were our three Toys-for-Tots donation bins filled to overflowing, but four eighteen-gallon containers, a table top, and considerable floor space were all laden with gifts – a testament to our client’s and community’s compassion for children in need. A special thanks is owed to Union City residents Creed and Patty Morgan for their generous donation towards the purchase of toys for this drive, and the
kind-hearted but anonymous family who, for the second consecutive year, hosted their own “Toy for Admission” holiday party and then donated many large bags filled with toys to the campaign. A special mention is also owed to the KRUZ3R MOB Bicycle Club of Newark – on their annual “KRUZ3R KRAWL” on December 11. They not only saw the sights and sounds of the Holidays and
collected toys for donation along the way, but also sent their Santa’s Sleigh / Chevy Tahoe to deliver those toys to our collection bins. We genuinely thank you all for your charity and kindness, and for sharing your Holiday Spirit with us. Dr. Margo Hogan Dr. John O’Dea & The Staff at Fremont Animal Hospital
Sunol Glen School Board CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 children at the school, she is passionate about education, and wanted to attend the board meeting to get an accurate picture of the state of the school. She encouraged other community members to look for ways to get involved, and emphasized the importance of not placing blame for any perceived shortcomings. Al Mendall, a parent of two students at the school, also addressed the board. After spending time with relatives in Southern California and seeing the desperate state of education in other parts of the state, he appreciates the great efforts being made by Sunol Glen administrators to do the very most with what they have. Districts everywhere are having to make tough choices, but in
spite of the great financial difficulty, Sunol Glen USD is strong and continuing to put students first. Principal/Superintendent Molly Barnes updated the board and audience on staff and curriculum development. She has been working with teachers, establishing focus groups for language arts and math in an effort to increase commonality across all grades for core subjects. She shared that in a time when many schools are stripping all arts from curriculum, Sunol Glen is continuing to encourage students to develop their creative skills. The Third Sunol Glen Film Festival was held last week, where dozens of students showcased their unique and original short films. Staff members are constantly
looking for extra-curricular enhancement activities for students. Closing comments were made by both Diane Everett and Gerry Beemiller. Ms. Everett thanked the audience for their attendance and support in the recent election. Mr. Beemiller expressed his appreciation to voters as well, and indicated that the time has come for the Sunol community to bind together in support of the school. He feels that much of the “small town” feel of the school has been lost in recent years, and hopes to regain that environment while still continuing to provide a solid education to the students. The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 18.

prised of team Pew Pew Lazer Beam from Mission San Jose High School and Red HoloRAMS from Irvington High School won the tournament. “Two teams received an ‘automatic’ bid to the Northern California Championship,” said Jill Wilker, an FTC coordinator. “Red HoloRAMS was officially designated as ‘home’ team and Pew Pew Lazer Beams received a bid based on winning two awards - Captain of the winning alliance as well as winner of the highest award at the tournament, the Inspire Award.” Twenty-eight teams from around Northern California will compete in the Northern California Championship to be held at Newark Memorial High School on January 19. Winners of the competition, as well as students from Canada, Mexico, Europe, and possibly China and Japan, will go to the World Championships on April 27-
April 30 in St. Louis, Missouri. Irvington High School junior Nicholas Yuk, from the winning team said, “The hardest part of the project was programming because only Joraaver [Chahal] could do it well, and finding strategies during matches was difficult, but we hope to outperform [the other teams]at the Northern California Championships.” Juniors Joraaver and his twin brother Suchaaver Chalal are the captains for Red HoloRAMS. While the winners do not receive any monetary awards, they become eligible for many
scholarships and get a boost on college applications. For instance, Mary Catalfamo, Drexel University’s Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions
said, “I must stress how impressed we were with the overall capabilities and talents of all of the FIRST Scholarship applicants. The applicants presented excellent academic qualifications and tremendous abilities or creative thinking, teamwork and team support.” Playing at Learning, a 510(c) (3) nonprofit, has partnered with FIRST to coordinate the PTC program throughout Northern California. The goal of FTC is to “reach young people in high school with the opportunity to discover the excitement and rewards of science, technology, and engineering.”
Reminder for In-Home Supportive Services providers to re-enroll SUBMITTED BY CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Director John Wagner on Wednesday reminded In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) workers to complete the new provider enrollment process before the end of the year or lose eligibility for the program. “While we are pleased that most providers have already completed background check requirements, approximately 27,000 in-home supportive service workers need to take steps now to ensure they complete that process by the end of the year,” Wagner said.
More than 380,000 providers have completed state requirements enacted in 2009, which include fingerprinting, undergoing a criminal background check and taking part in a provider orientation. Assembly Bill, Fourth Extraordinary Legislative Session (ABX4) 19 (Chapter 17, Statutes of 2009) established additional enrollment requirements for all IHSS providers which were to be completed no later than July 1, 2010. Due to the volume of provider enrollment forms, orientations, and criminal background checks that could not be processed by counties by June 30, 2010, CDSS instructed counties via an All-County Letter that current providers who
have completed one of four provider enrollment requirements will be allowed until December 31, 2010, to complete the remaining mandated enrollment requirements. Any provider who has not completed the entire process will then be terminated and no longer be paid by the IHSS program for any hours they work after December 31, 2010. IHSS providers needing to take steps to re-enroll in the program should contact their county IHSS program or public authority to learn more about how to re-enroll. A list of IHSS contacts by counties can be found at http://www.cdss.ca.gov/agedblinddisabled/PG1785.htm.
