ilpitas Property and Evidence Unit personnel are responsible for holding evidence and safekeeping property for the Milpitas Police Department. Evidence is checked out, sent to the lab, to court, inspected, disposed of or released. All of this requires a system of management capable of maintaining strict control and enforcing rules and regulations that can often change. Milpitas Property Clerk, Deborah Souza consistently keeps current with techniques regarding evidence collection, booking and technology. Souza has become known as one of the most knowledgeable Property and Evidence professionals within California. In recognition of her expertise, the California

Association for Property and Evidence (C.A.P.E.) recently awarded her the prestigious “2010 State Property Officer of the Year” award. C.A.P.E. was formed in order to promote professionalism in property and evidence gathering, processing, and retention. The non-profit organization is comprised of over 400 current law enforcement professionals throughout California involved in the daily management of property and evidence of their respective law enforcement agencies. The honor of Property Officer of the Year is given to an individual who has excelled in multiple areas: training, teaching, longevity and service in the field of Property and Evidence. Souza, who has been the Milpitas Property Clerk and a member of C.A.P.E. since 1990 and with the Milpitas Department since 1987, was chosen from a highly qualified group of ex-

tremely competent individuals. Careful and thorough attention to detail is critical when handling evidence; for the protection of Milpitas citizens and successful efforts of department officers. “We maintain all items that are collected as evidence in criminal cases, items that are

found by the City of Milpitas or recovered for safekeeping. For instance, if someone is in a car accident and goes to the hospital, we might hold their purse for safekeeping. We try to get the property to the right people” said Souza. “Our main objective is to return property back to the rightful owner. We

also determine what needs to go to the crime lab for testing and carry it back and forth.” When asked about disposal of items that cannot be returned, she says, “When I am unable to determine ownership or the items are otherwise unclaimed, I send them to PropertyRoom.com.”

Building fire SUBMITTED BY MILPITAS FIRE DEPARTMENT On Monday, November 22, at 7:49 p.m., one Milpitas Fire Unit responded to an automatic aid request from San Jose Fire Department to Numi Recycling Plant. Milpitas Engine 301 arrived on the scene first and reported a fire in elevated rubbish containers. Command was established and a report of conditions given. Truck Four laid a supply line to E301 and provided a “Rapid Invention Crew” team. Multiple attack lines were placed into service. San Jose Fire unites E5, B29, Truck 29 and Engine 29 arrived on scene. Milpitas Fire B19 maintained the role of Incident Commander and San Jose as-

sumed the role of operations. The building contained multiple elevated garbage storage containers on conveyer belts. The containers had to be accessed by ground ladders and elevated platforms. Fire units on the scene were divided into divisions and groups. The power was shut off at the conveyer units and several fires were extinguished using multiple hose lines and the building automatic sprinkler system. After the fire was contained, Milpitas units cleared the scene at 10:03 p.m. and passed “IC” to San Jose B29. San Jose Fire unites provided salvage and overhaul operations. There were no reports of injuries. The cause of fire is still under investigation.

Safe Kids acknowledges Officer Kraft SUBMITTED BY SERGEANT KEVIN MOSCUZZA, MILPITAS PD The Milpitas Police Department works in partnership with the local chapter of Safe Kids USA to prevent injuries to children and their families by conducting car seat safety inspections. Some officers are certified through Safe Kids as Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Car seat inspections are offered by appointment as a free service to the public. A certified technician can inspect your car seat to determine if it meets current safety standards and to ensure it is installed properly.

On November 16, 2010, the Safe Kids coordinator of Santa Clara County and San Mateo County acknowledged Milpitas Police Officer Dennis Kraft as the top car seat technician for 2010. To daye, during this year, Officer Kraft has completed 140 car seat inspections. To determine if a car seat is the right size for your child and if it is properly installed, please call the Milpitas Police Department at (408) 586-2400 to schedule an appointment. Day and evening appointments are available. The Milpitas Police Department is also proud to offer this free service in Spanish as well as English.

Vehicle fire SUBMITTED BY MILPITAS FIRE DEPARTMENT On November 9, at 8:08 p.m., one Milpitas Fire Unit responded to a report of a water flow alarm in a commercial building located at 1830 McCandless Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered a fire in a vehicle parked inside the shop area of the building. Six additional Milpitas Units were dispatched to the scene. Command was established and a report of conditions given. The building contained several vehicles and a significant number of batteries designed for use in hybrid vehicles. If breached, the batteries posed a severe exposure problem with serious health and safety risks for first responders and the public. The business conducted battery modifications to existing hybrid vehicles. The fire started in a modified vehicle. A second alarm was initiated by B19, with AMR Paramedics, and Command Staff notifications. Fire units initiated “fire attack” with a “Rapid Intervention Crew” in place to insure firefighter safety. The fire was quickly “knocked down” and confined to the place and room of origin. The 2nd alarm was canceled prior to arrival at the scene. Primary and secondary searches were conducted and the building was deemed “all clear.” The structure was ventilated and “run off” from batteries proved to be negative. There were no reported injuries. Cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damages were estimated at $40,000. Fire crews cleared the scene at 11:41 p.m.

American Greetings Corp. on Friday unveiled the line of cards that can make embarrassing sounds, aptly named ``It's a gas!'' The Cleveland-based company says each whoopee cushion-turned-card in

the collection can be signed and sent in an accompanying envelope. The nation's largest publicly traded greeting card company has about 2,000 employees in northeast Ohio.

n my last column, I wrote about planning for your kitchen remodel. This week, we’ll talk about kitchen countertop materials. There are numerous options available, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Your lifestyle, cooking style, design style, and of course your budget, all will come into play when deciding on countertop materials. Granite Granite continues to be very popular for kitchen counters. It is durable, practical, beautiful and luxurious. Since it is a natural stone, each slab is unique, and the patterns and colors can vary greatly from piece to piece. The randomness of granite patterns and colors is one of the

most appealing features of this material. It is easy to clean with an appropriate granite cleaner, and you must seal granite periodically to protect it from stains and water absorption. Generally speaking, the darker the granite, the more dense and water resistant it is. Granite prices run in the range of $50 to $100 per square foot installed, depending on the uniqueness of the stone and what type of edging you select. There are dozens of granite choices out there, so take your time browsing, but here are a few of my favorites: For a contemporary look, consider Black Galaxy (gorgeous black with copper flecks) or Labrador Antigua (rich brown with hints of

blue.) For a more traditional look, try Crema Bordeaux (elegant burgundy colorations) or Juparana Fantastico (beautiful mixture of cream, brown, gold and silver.) Marble Marble is less stain-resistant and more porous than granite. However, with proper care, it can last for many years and is a beautiful choice. Think about the marble sculptures in Europe that have lasted for centuries! If you love to bake, consider a baking station with a marble countertop. Marble is reputed to stay chilled longer, making it advantageous for bakers. Marble is priced similarly to granite and also comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The classic White Carrara marble works well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. Engineered Stone Engineered stone, like Caesarstone and Zodiaq, is a manmade product composed of quartz glass and colored pebbles. It is very durable, impervious to water and stains, and does not need to be sealed. For those who like more uniform and consistent colors and patterns, engineered stone is a

good choice. It works well with contemporary designs. Engineered stone is as expensive as granite and marble, so the decision to purchase it would be more about the maintenance and aesthetics rather than price. Vetrazzo Vetrazzo is the brand name for a man-made, environmentally friendly product made from 85% recycled glass. It is unique and beautiful, and comes in many colors, from earthtones to vibrant blues and greens. It is similar in durability and stain-resistance to granite and marble, and should be sealed periodically. Vetrazzo is priced similarly to engineered and natural stone, so choose it because you love the look and the fact that it is considered a “green” product. It is best suited to contemporary design styles. Laminate If you are on a tight budget, laminate countertops are the way to go. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns (some mimic the look of granite quite well!) and you also have a choice of edge details like bullnose and beveled edges. Laminate can scratch and is not heat resistant, but it is stain and water resistant.

With proper care, laminate counters can last many years and serve you very well. There are other options available as well, such as concrete, stainless steel, wood and tile. Depending on the look you want in your kitchen, your budget, and your maintenance requirements, the perfect countertop material is out there waiting for you.

2010) and the latest ordinance (approved on November 23, 2010) make Santa Clara County a leader in the nation in preventing youth tobacco use and protecting residents from second-hand smoke. They apply to the unincorporated areas of the County. The Tobacco Retailer Permit Ordinance will require all retailers to obtain and maintain an annual permit to sell tobacco products. They would pay a one-time application fee and an annual fee to cover the costs of administration and enforcement of the ordinance. A similar retail permit measure is

being considered by the City of San Jose. It will take effect in 60 days; however, the County will delay enforcement of the provision prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products for an additional 30 days to consider potential impacts on cigar and pipe tobacco products whose higher cost means youth are less likely to smoke them. The County will cover the application fee of $340 for existing, legally operating tobacco retailers. All tobacco retailers, new and existing, will be subject to the $425 annual permit fee.

The ordinance also bans any new retail outlets from selling tobacco if they operate a pharmacy or are located within 1,000 feet of a school or within 500 feet of another tobacco retailer. The Smoking Pollution Control Ordinance protects non-smokers from second-hand smoke exposure in public. Under the measure, smoking is banned at the County Fairgrounds and at all County parks. It’s the best way to stay looking young and healthy. “There are no magic creams or miracle foods,” said Dr. Anna McNay, a dermatologist and member of the Washington Hospital medical staff. “It’s just good basic skin care and healthy living.” November is designated National Healthy Skin Month to highlight the importance of taking good care of your skin. Your skin is more than just a pretty face. It’s your body’s first line of defense against disease and infection. The largest organ in your body, skin also maintains temperature control and fluid balance, McNay said. “We don’t always think about the important role our skin plays,” she added. Genes and exposure to environmental factors like sun and wind affect how your skin ages, according to McNay. Visible signs of aging include wrinkles, brown spots, and thin or transparent skin. “Sunlight is very damaging to skin,” she said. “The sun’s ultraviolet rays are much stronger today than when we were kids. Despite the current vitamin D controversy, the American Academy of Dermatology still recommends obtaining vitamin D through diet and/or supplements instead of direct exposure to the sun.” McNay offered these tips for protecting yourself from the sun and taking good care of your skin. Wear sunscreen. She recommends an SPF of 30 or higher. You need to reapply it every 80 minutes under regular conditions, sooner if you are sweating or swimming. “Teach your kids how to put it on at an early age so they get into the habit,” she added. “Use waterproof, sweat-proof sunscreen and don’t forget a hat and sunglasses.”

Keep your face clean. Most people should wash their faces twice a day, in the morning and at night, according to McNay. “If your skin is very dry, you might want to wash your face only at night,” she said. “Use a crème-based moisturizing cleanser if you have dry skin and never use soap on your face. If your skin is oily, you can use a cleanser

that has a mild salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in it.” She recommends against using harsh astringents on oily skin because the skin may produce more oil to compensate. Use moisturizing lotion. McNay encourages people to moisturize their skin daily unless they have extremely oily skin. “We live in a dry climate here

in California,” she said. “That causes your skin to dry out.” She recommends applying moisturizing lotion or cream, depending on the skin type, to your entire body. “You don’t have to pay a huge amount for fancy creams,” she added. “There are plenty of good brands on the market that don’t cost a fortune.” Don’t smoke. Smoking causes deep lines and wrinkles to appear on your face prematurely and depletes the skin of oxygen, according to McNay. “Smoking can make your skin look yellow and leathery,” she added. “It speeds up the aging process.” Drink in moderation. “Too much alcohol can also damage skin,” McNay said. “Alcohol causes small blood vessels in the skin to widen, producing broken capillaries near the surface of the skin. It can exacerbate rosacea in patients who are prone to this skin condition.” Exercise regularly. An active lifestyle leads to better health, including better skin health, according to McNay. Exercise brings more oxygen and nutrients to the skin, keeping it firmer and more nourished. “Exercise increases circulation and gives the skin a healthy, radiant glow,” she added. Get plenty of sleep. Exercise also helps you get a good night sleep, important for your skin. “Sleep helps to avoid eye puffiness,” McNay said. “The hormone melatonin is a released into your body during sleep, and that has a positive effect on the skin.” Eat right. McNay also recommends eating a diet full of fruits and vegetables and avoiding junk food. “Your mother was right, you are what you eat,” she said. “Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to nourish the skin.” ZZZ

Although many pet owners attempt to keep popular holiday poisons away from their pet friends, dogs and cats can be tempted to nibble on these delicacies. Because pets will get into mischief, pet owners are advised to be very careful during the holiday season. Many pets get less exercise during the winter months and this lack of activity and stimulation often results in mischief. to the hospital for having ingested large amounts of chocolate. Depending on the dose ingested, chocolate can cause vomiting, hyperactivity, increased heart rate including arrhythmias, increased thirst and urination, and seizures. Due to their smaller size, toy breeds are very sensitive to chocolate poisoning. Candies or gum containing an ingredient called xylitol can cause a drop in blood sugar resulting in tremors, loss of coordination and/or seizures. Leftovers should be left alone Greasy, spicy, and fatty foods are the worst for causing severe illness during the holidays. Those delicious gravies, fried foods, and chicken skin are

high in fat and can cause a severe case of pancreatitis leading to vomiting and diarrhea. The holiday chicken or turkey will leave a lot of little bones that can be easily swallowed by your pet. Bones can splinter and cause blockages or perforation. Last holiday season, I was busy removing bones from stomachs, esophagus, and intestines. Kindly, spare your pet the suffering and leave leftovers alone. No kiss under this mistletoe Mistletoe and holiday holly berries can cause upset stomach (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea), heart problems, and malaise. Poinsettias, although less toxic, can cause stomach irritation, vomiting or nausea. Toxic lilies are especially dangerous because they can cause kidney failure in cats. Practice Christmas tree safety Please secure your tree and ensure that all pine needles are picked up to prevent ingestion by your pet. Pine needles can be very sharp and can puncture or irritate your pet’s intestines. Please keep your pet away from Christmas tree water. The water may contain fertilizers which

may cause an upset stomach. The stagnant water can also serve as breeding ground for bacteria accumulation and if ingested can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Decorate with care Decorations like ribbon or tinsel are great delicacies for pets, especially kitties. They can get lodged in the intestines and cause an obstruction. No alcohol for your companion Alcohol ingestion can result in severe respiratory depression and coma. The Season of Giving Would you like to contribute for pet welfare? Consider donating your old towels and blankets to the animal shelter or your local veterinarian. You can also donate to a Good Samaritan fund at your local veterinarian, find a new home for a pet, volunteer at the animal shelter or help a homebound neighbor who may need help in caring for their pet. Your pets give you a lot of love and companionship. Isn’t it time you gave something back?

BY GIOVANNI ALBANESE JR. Cal State University-East Bay’s athletics have done a full shift into the winter season. Both the men and women basketball teams were in action last week in a light week overall. East Bay’s Lady Pioneers hoops finished up its preseason schedule with a Tuesday, Nov.

Division Championship game featuring the Chiefs and Saints. This was an important game as the Chiefs had come oh so close in the previous years. In 2008, the Chiefs went undefeated until the playoffs and

lost a heartbreaker on the very last play in the second round of the playoffs to the Cardinals. The game was close and the Chiefs fumbled on the goahead touchdown on the 1-yard

line on the last play of the game, it was a heartbreaker. In 2009, the next season, coach Raymond Adcock took over as head coach and the Chiefs also went undefeated until the championship game and lost to the Giants by four points. The kids were deflated as they had worked so hard and to lose at the end was devastating. Fast forward 12 months to the present. In 2010 the coaches told each other that they would not let the past repeat itself and let these kids down again. The kids played their hearts out and led the league with their defense, led by defensive coach Daniel Williams. They finished the year 8-0, outscoring their opponents 306-108. All of the Chiefs rookie players gave their all as they knew how much this season meant to the returnees; the returnees – including three-year players Xavier Williams, Bran-

don Bettencourt, Sammy Garcia and Alex Scully – played their hearts out wanting to finally finish what they started. In the end, the Chiefs led from start to finish and finally took the division. They led at halftime 28-8 and won 52-20 and held their trophy high. Offensively, the Chiefs were led by touchdowns from Jakobee Harris, Bettencourt and Skully. On the defensive side of the ball, Alex Lopez, Marcus Alonso and Nufi

Pokam all recovered fumbles to help the Chiefs to victory. All the boys were so ecstatic that they had to finally ask them to leave the field so the next game could start. It was truly a great ending to a long journey. In other FFL action on Championship Saturday, the Buckaneers claimed the National Division Championship while the Raiders got past the Broncos for the American Division Championship.

16, match with Holy Names in Oakland. Holy Names was able to race out to a 10-point, firsthalf lead, 39-29. In the second half, the Lady Pioneers made a run, outscoring Holy Names 30-26, ultimately falling short in the game, 65-59. Antonette Capili and JaimeLeigh Ronolo led the way for Holy Names, each netting 14

points in the winning effort. Leslie Vodicska also chipped in with 11 points for the hosts. East Bay’s individual stats for the game were unavailable at press. As a team, the Lady Pioneers out rebounded their opponents 50-35. The loss dropped East Bay to 0-2 on the preseason. Next time the Lady Pioneers tip off for a game, it will count for real. They’ll be in Bellingham, Wash., taking part in the Lynda Goodrich Classic at Western Washington University. At the

Classic, East Bay will first take on the host club, Friday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m., and conclude on Saturday, Nov. 27, 5 p.m. against St. Martin’s. For the Pioneers’ men’s basketball team, they’ve tipped off their season with a trio of games. After getting off to a solid start, they have dropped two in a row over a three-game span last week. In their regular-season opener at home against the Academy of Art, the Pioneers were able to escape with a 68-65 overtime vic-

tory. East Bay outscored AAU 3325 in the opening half, but gave up their eight-point halftime lead, being outscored 36-28 in the second half to send it into OT. However, Academy of Art seemed to run out of gas in the extra session, and were outscored by East Bay, 7-4, to drop the game. A week ago, a number of preseason scrimmages were scheduled in basketball as the season tips off for real over this coming week of Nov. 22 through Nov. 27. One game that did count in the standings last week was a battle between the Tennyson and Fremont (Oakland) high schools’ girls basketball teams. in, and within 30 feet of, any outdoor service area, such as a ticket line or the outdoor portion of a restaurant. Additionally, motels and hotels will become entirely smoke-free facilities. “Ten percent of the kids in Santa Clara County smoke cigarettes. It’s been too easy for underage youth to walk into a retailer and purchase tobacco products. We know that once these young people begin smoking, they’re likely to continue into adulthood and increase their risks of premature death from heart disease, stroke and cancer,” said Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County Health Officer. “Retail licenses are a proven deterrent to youth-access to cigarettes. Preventing youth from starting to smoke is much easier than trying to get them to stop.” The Multi-Unit Residences Ordinance bans smoking in the common areas of all multi-unit residences and in all apartment units, condominiums and townhouses. The ordinance allows for designated smoking areas for such residences provided they are in unenclosed areas that are at least 30 feet away from operable doors, windows and other openings into enclosed areas where smoking is not permitted.

n a poignant moment at the Fremont City Council meeting on Thursday, November 23rd, Coach Pete Michaletos was

honored for forty-six years service to John F. Kennedy High School (JFK) and the community. The only football coach JFK had every known, Michaletos and his wife, Jan, were more than just a fixture at the high

school. The coach commented that her support for the 46 years of their marriage was testament to her guidance and backing which proves that “Along side every good man is a good woman.” Special weekly dinners and activities for players, a willing ear to hear problems as well as a second home for many, the Michaletos house was always bustling with activity and good cheer. Although coaching his last game on Saturday, November 6, 2010 and retiring from duties as the JFK Titans head coach,

Michaletos assured everyone that he was still around and will be an active retiree. Councilmember Bob Wieckowski, who attended JFK and played football under “Coach Mike” read a proclamation and listened as the coach thanked those who helped to support his efforts. Coach Mike, “longest tenured coach in California’s history,” reminisced about the councilmember and future state legislator’s tenure as a linebacker with the Titans. Wieckowski was able to slip

into his high school letter jacket for the occasion, a memento of his participation in a 1972 championship season. The Titans won an additional championship in 1988. In tribute to Coach Mike’s service, former Raider Football Coach John Madden noted on his radio program that Michaletos epitomizes commitment saying, “We need more coaches and mentors like him.” The City resolution noted that Coach Mike “brightened the lives of everyone and anyone he touched.”

But what are schools really looking for? And what role should parents play when teens try to sum up their lives in a few hundred words? Here are some insights from admissions officials at The Ohio State University and at Oberlin College, along with advice from the author of “Write Your College Essay In Less Than a Day.” Ohio State, one of the country’s biggest schools with 56,000 students on its Columbus campus, gets 26,600 applications a year and admits more than 14,000 students. “When you’re getting the volume of applications we do, you put the greatest

weight on the high school transcript and performance in high school,” said Mabel Freeman, assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions. But like a lot of colleges, Ohio State also asks applicants to write 300 words on why they are interested in attending. “Our use of the essay is to try to determine if this is going to be a good match for an institution and a student,’’ Freeman said. “We are a big public research institution, diverse and urban. For the right student, this is the right place. Oberlin College, also located in Ohio, is a small private school with 2,900 students. Oberlin received 6,000 applications last year, admitted a third and enrolled 700. STORY AND PHOTOS BY MIRIAM G. MAZLIACH Rancho Milpitas Middle School’s 725 students were in for a special treat as they celebrated the start of “Dare to Dream” week November 15-19. The kick-off event, marked by assemblies held separately for the 7th and 8th graders, featured a “local guy who made good.” Growing up in nearby East San Jose, Deon H. Hayman had headed off to Los Angeles to achieve his dream of success in the movie business. He had come to speak with the students and screen one of his short films, targeted to the middle school-age audience. His invitation came about when Principal Leticia Villa-Gascon asked Assistant Principal Anthony Frascone, about the kind of anti-bullying assembly being planned for this year and its focus. “After reflecting on my first two years in this role,” said Frascone, “I was compelled to go back to the principal and say, I want to bring in an assembly, but not your average cookie cutter, one size fits all approach and I also want it to be positive.” While brainstorming ideas, Principal Villa-Gascon remembered her childhood friend who had made a movie about middle school and how he had won some awards. Frascone added, “The school counselor, Jennifer Hutchison, who really has her finger on the pulse of our school, was brought into the conversation, and then someone said, “Dare to Dream” week. Everything else fell into place from there,” said Frascone.

discouraged; go for your dreams,” says Hayman. “I’ve always dreamt about filmmaking and after high school I moved to L.A. to make it happen.” Frascone who had attended Rancho Milpitas in his youth, told the students, “We want you to focus on looking internally and thinking about what you want your future to look like, to find out what talents you have inside. This week your teachers are going to encourage you to pursue your dreams.” “We’re excited to promote positive attitudes in students,” added Principal Villa-Gascon. “We want to motivate students to have success and we want you to dream big.” After the assembly, Frascone announced an extra competition. The school is launching a contest that will encourage the Rancho students to use their imagination to create a poem, a short story, a public service announcement, artwork, or an interpretive dance, etc., highlighting the importance of following or expressing one’s dreams. A special prize will be given to the first place winner and the top three entries will be showcased on the morning announcements to the entire school. “Rancho Milpitas Middle School has been designated as one of the ‘national schools to watch’ by the National Forum, and was selected due to its replicable practices/curriculum that really targets what it’s like to be in middle school,” according to Jennifer Hutchison, the school’s counselor. “We’re the little school that could. A lot of great things are going on here.”

Wynne also grabbed 10 boards to notch a double-double, leading the Pioneers. But that was the high point for the Pioneers. After the early-week win, they headed up to Seattle Pacific University for the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic on Friday, Nov. 19, and Saturday, Nov. 20, dropping both games. On Friday, the Pioneers took on the No. 6-ranked Seattle Pacific University and were outclassed to the tune of a 40-point margin, 102-62. East Bay was outscored in both halves — 53-36 in the first; 49-26 in the second — as SPU ran away with it. Wynne led the way with 18 points; Freedman chipped in with 10; but no other Pioneer had double figures. On the other side, SPU had six players in double figures, including the entire starting five. A day later, East Bay put together a better performance on both ends of the floor, scoring 20 points more and allowing four less points than the day before, but were still dropped by double digits, 98-82, to Western Washington. Again, the Pioneers were outscored in both halves — 47-38 in the first; 51-44 in the second — en route to the 16-point loss. Like Seattle Pacific, Western Washington had six players in double figures scoring, three starters and three off the bench, totaling 83 points, outscoring the entire East Bay team. Meanwhile, the Pioneers only had six scorers. Samuels led the way with 26; Freedman had 24; and Wynne had 16, but no other players got their game going. Next up for the Pioneers — after an extended break — they go on the road for the start of California Collegiate Athletic Association season. First up is San Francisco State on Friday, Dec. 3, followed by Cal State University-Monterey Bay on Saturday, Dec. 4. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. In other CSEB athletics, the swim team went to Fresno to take on Fresno City and Biola in a tri-team swim meet on Saturday, Nov. 20. Results, however, were not available at press. Next up for the swim team is the UNLV Invitational on from Dec. 11 through 13.

grad who created “The Lion King” musical. Unfortunately, the applicant spelled it as “The Loin King,’’ an error that a parent proofreader might have caught. Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, author of “Write Your College Essay in Less Than a Day’’ (Random House, $15), says the hardest part of writing a college essay is finding the right topic. “Everyone has stories to tell, and you don’t have to be the top student to have a great story,’’ said WissnerGross, whose website is EducationalStrategy.org. “If you find that you’re laboring over it, it probably isn’t the right story. If it’s the right story, then you’ll be dying to tell it and it’ll be fun to

write.” She added: “The main thing colleges want to know is why they should accept you. You want your essay to tell them that as directly as possible.” Depending on the topic, “the best way to do it is to tell a real story that gives them one slice of your life rather than trying to summarize your life in 500 words. Think of a good story that shows your greatest achievement so far. It doesn’t have to be that you cured cancer or published a novel. It could be an act of compassion or community service, or something related to a job, or how you dealt with a challenge or a hardship growing up.’’

Wissner-Gross says a typical five-paragraph, 500word college essay “starts with the climax of the story - the most exciting or most confusing part of the story or the challenge.” The second paragraph tells “who, what, when, where, how and why.” The third paragraph continues the story. The fourth paragraph includes your credentials, and the fifth should “tie it all together’’ with a happy ending, punch line, moral or summation of “why I want to study this in college.” But students must keep the focus on themselves. “It shouldn’t be a story they observed, but rather a story in which they played a central or pivotal role and saved the

day or solved the problem.” The essay should “show that you’ve grown through the experience.’’ Parents can help kids brainstorm essay topics. But avoid tales from early childhood, Wissner-Gross said. She cautioned that “if a child is afraid to show the parent the essay, that’s a light bulb. A lot of kids will use this opportunity to confess all their worst misdeeds. It’s not a good idea.” While parents should proofread essays, their bigger role starts in ninth grade, by making sure teens have extracurricular activities, whether sports, clubs, work or volunteering. Students who have the hardest time writing essays, Wissner-Gross says, are the “kids who have such outrageously sheltered lives that they never experience anything.”
