ody Forward is an athletic event of the mind. This all day competition is an exercise of cutting edge robotics that will showcase 24 teams of 4th-8th grade students who hope to qualify for Northern California Regional Competition. Each team has bio-engineered and programmed a robot to demonstrate their knowledge and prowess. Every September, First Lego League Robotics (FLL) releases a “Challenge,” based on a real-
world scientific topic. Each Challenge has two parts: the Robot Game and the Project. This year, the Body Forward theme examines innovative approaches that “will explore the cutting-edge world of biomedical engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body’s potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.” continued on page 4

Teams have programmed an autonomous robot to solve a problem they have identified within the theme. In past years, challenges have focused on nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped population, and transportation. One of the qualifying First Lego League Robotics (FLL) Tournaments is slated for Saturday, November 20th at Irvington High School in Fremont. Students will be judged in robot design, performance, research presentation and teamwork. To demonstrate the culmination of these elements, four team flights will run robot missions simultaneously. This year, over 15,000 teams formed for this competition in over 50 countries. The Irvington High School event is expected to attract approximately 150 student team members, their coaches and families. The event is free and open to the public. Letter to Editor It started as a holiday employee giving program in the City of Fremont’s Department of Human Services. City employees have raised funds for over 12 years to provide seniors and families with ‘extras’ at the holidays and their funds created an “Urgent Need Fund” that case workers use to help needy residents when sudden emergencies come up during the winter. A few years ago, word started getting out about the program and it expanded to include donations from the community, although it still remained primarily a city employee holiday giving campaign. Funds raised were used to provide seniors and families with grocery and target gift cards in modest amounts, to help boost their spirits and provide ‘extras’ during the holidays, and create an emergency fund that case workers could draw from for emergency lodging, emergency medication, transportation or when money has run out, and there is no food for the family dinner. Currently, approximately 300 families, 100 seniors, and 1000 children/teens are assigned to City case workers – and additional people walk in requesting help daily. Fortunately, City programs are linked

Adopt a family or senior closely with non-profits in the area serving needy residents, so efforts are coordinated to serve as many people as possible. But still the need has outgrown current resources. This year, with the bad economy and unemployment situation, City case workers estimate that the number of individuals, children, seniors, and families requesting help has grown by over 60%, and associated depression and counseling needs have increased by more than 70%. The need is bigger than those of us already involved, and we need more people to help our Fremont neighbors through this difficult time. Please help this grass roots effort to make a difference. Quite frankly, those of us already involved are finding that it is boosting our own spirits to help others. For our neighbors who don’t have family, resources or support, the impact is truly overwhelming. Here are the ways to help: Donate funds to the City of Fremont’s ‘Urgent Needs Fund” or donate grocery/restaurant/target gift cards– send checks & gift cards to: Monica Dominguez Senior Office Specialist Aging & Family Services
City of Fremont 3300 Capitol Ave, Building B, Fremont 94538 (510) 574-2057 (510) 574-2054 fax mdominguez@fremont.gov Donate new or like-new coats and new socks for children, teens, and adults (by Dec. 5) Current Drop Off locations: Color Me Quilts, 37495 Niles Blvd. The Nile Café, 121 I St. Daily 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) More locations needed. Create a holiday gift basket for a needy family or senior. Organize family, neighbors, work team, & friends to collectively share the experience & cost of building a holiday food/gift basket We are also requesting NEW items to fill baskets – anything that could make a senior, individual, or family’s gift basket nicer. This is a great opportunity to come together and encourage hope during this difficult time. The city staff often gets a bad rap – but I think that this type of community involvement is often overlooked. continued on page 22

officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children in fifth grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive, drug and violence-free lives. Through DARE, students learn how to interact with police officers in a controlled, safe, classroom environment. On November 3, St. John the Baptist School in Milpitas celebrated the year’s first DARE graduation. This marks the 18th year the Milpitas Police Department has worked with the fifth grade
class at St. John’s School. The graduating class consisted of 22 fifth grade students. Several police officers and students from all grades attended the ceremony. The fifth grade class worked with DARE Officer Gene Smith for several weeks and participated in a contest involving the creation of a DARE poster, and wrote essays regarding what they had learned in the program. Winner of the essay contest was Jillian Nool, and the poster award went to Albert Nguyen. Ethan To was honored with the Most Inspirational Student award. All of these students received medals for their performances. Patrick Gloria was named the Top DARE Student, for his essay, poster, and participation, and was rewarded with a trophy presented by Chief Dennis Graham.
Newark Police investigate armed robbery at Chuck E. Cheese’s SUBMITTED BY ROBERT DOUGLAS On Saturday, November 13, at approximately 10 p.m., the Newark Police Department received multiple 911 calls from customers and employees at Chuck E. Cheese’s reporting an armed robbery in progress. Arriving Newark Police Officers set up a perimeter around the business while Newark Police Dispatch maintained contact with the victims inside. Victims relayed that three armed suspects had entered Chuck E. Cheese’s at closing time and herded over 40 customers (including children) and employees into a storeroom. The victims communicated they were unsure if the suspects were still in the business. An team of police officers entered the business to secure the safety of the trapped victims and the building was evacuated. None of the victims were injured. It appeared the suspects had fled prior to police arrival. Fremont Police Officers assisted with securing the perimeter and the entry of the business. Patrons and employees at the nearby Chevy’s restaurant were asked to shelter in place until it was safe for them to leave. Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to call Detective David Higbee at (510) 5784231. Information can also be left anonymously on the “Silent Witness” hotline: 578-4000, extension 500.

ccording to FBI statistics Hayward’s violent crime for 2009 dropped by 14.8 percent with a 13.7 percent drop in robberies, 9.8 percent fewer aggravated assaults and 49.1 percent fewer forcible rapes. City saw a drop in robberies from 517 to 446. There were seven homicides in 2008 and six in 2009, although there has been a spate of homicides this year. The violent crime category includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent Crime dropped from 868 to 740 with fewer rapes (57 in 2008 to 29 in 2009), aggravated assaults (287 in 2008 and 259 in 2009). Property crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Property Crimes are down from 4,537 in 2008 to 4,405 in 2009. Burglaries reported in 2008 were 1,080 dropping to 979 last year. The only exception is motor vehicle theft with 1,343 cases in 2008 rising to 1,452 in 2009. Talking about police efforts that help

“About a year ago we had about 10 or 12 vacant positions that were being held open pending budget issues,” said Chief Ace. “Fortunately for the City of Hayward, the community awarded us the Utility Users Tax and with the combination of federal stimulus grant, we were able to hire all of our vacant positions plus add nine positions. So we have hired 20 Police Officers over the last eight months to nine months that has allowed us to place special units back in place, neighborhood watch programs to achieve our goals of excellence in law enforcement. We are implementing several new strategies like the SMASH (Synchronized Multi Agency Safe Housing) program.” SMASH targets problem properties, whether a bar, apartment complex or single-family residence, that account for a high number of police calls. Officers team up with the building inspectors, fire officials, city legal staff and others to do a full sweep of the property, checking for parole and probation problems, and code violations to make sure that everybody is abiding by the rules. Addressing the spike in homicides this year he said,

“We have had an unusual number of homicides this year, with unusual cases like double homicides.” Chief Ace’s career as a law enforcement professional spans over 35 years with prior service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 through 1971. He served with the Concord Police Department from 1975 until retirement in 2005. Previously, Ace served as a Deputy Sheriff with Alameda County from 1973 to 1975. During his tenure with the Concord PD, Chief Ace held a variety of positions including Uniform Patrol, Field Training Officer, Property Crimes Detective, Robbery/Homicide Detective, and Sexual Assault Detective. He served as Interim Chief of Police for Hayward since March 2008 and was appointed Chief of Police in January 2009. Chief Ace has received several awards throughout his career including, Outstanding Friend of Education - California School Administrators; Officer of the Year - Concord Police Department; Outstanding Service Award - Northern California Juvenile Officer’s Association; and the Warrington Stokes Award for Child Abuse Prevention.

Movies - New Releases Megamind Rating: PG Cast: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt Megamind is the most brilliant super-villain the world has ever known...
and the least successful. Over the years, he has tried to conquer Metro City in every imaginable way. Each attempt, a colossal failure thanks to caped superhero “Metro Man,” until the day Megamind actually defeats him during one of his botched evil plans. Suddenly, the fate of Metro City is threatened when a new villain arrives and chaos runs rampant, leaving everyone to wonder: Can the world’s biggest “mind” save the day? Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer Rated R Cast: Eliot Spitzer, Kim Allen and Wrenn Schmidt This documentary feature takes an in-depth look at the rapid rise and dramatic fall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Nicknamed “The Sheriff of Wall Street” when he was NY’s Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer prosecuted crimes of America’s largest financial in-
stitutions and some of the most powerful executives in the country. After his election as Governor, with the largest margin in the state’s history, many believed Spitzer was on his way to becoming the nation’s first Jewish President. Shockingly, Spitzer’s meteoric rise turned into a precipitous fall when the New York Times revealed that Spitzer – a paragon of rectitude - had been caught visiting prostitutes. Powerful enemies gloated and his supporters questioned the timing of it all. As the Sheriff fell, so did the financial markets, in a cataclysm that threatened to unravel the global economy. With unique access to the escort world as well as friends, colleagues and enemies of the ex-Governor (many of whom have come forward for the first time), the film explores the hidden contours of this tale of hubris, sex, and power. Morning Glory Rated: PG-13 Cast: Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton
When hard-working TV producer Becky Fuller (McAdams) is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her hapless love life. Stumbling into a job at “Daybreak” (the lastplace national morning news show), Becky de-
cides to revitalize the show by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Ford). Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity gossip, weather, fashion and crafts, let alone work with his new cohost, Colleen Peck (Keaton), a former beauty queen and longtime morning show personality who is more than happy covering morning “news.” As Mike and Colleen clash, first behind the scenes and then on the air, Becky’s blossoming love affair with fellow producer, Adam Bennett (Wilson) begins to unravel. Soon Becky is struggling to save her relationship, her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself Unstoppable Rated: PG-13 Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Ethan Suplee Inspired by actual events, “Unstoppable” is an adrenaline rush fueled by director Tony Scott’s signature mark of
propulsive action rooted in the reality of ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. A veteran train engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine) race the clock to stop an unmanned runaway train – effectively a missile the size of a skyscraper - and prevent disaster in a heavily populated area.
Fair Game Rated PG-13 Cast: Naomi Watts, Sean Penn Screenplay by: Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, Fair Game is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was exposed by a politically motivated press leak. As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a firestorm of controversy.

Washington Hospital Class Shows How Yoga Can Help
I
f you suffer from chronic pain, you know it can take a heavy toll on your life. It can keep you from enjoying time with friends and family, and even affect your ability to perform everyday tasks like bathing or dressing. “Chronic pain can cause frustration, anger and depression,” said Bonnie Maeda, RN, a certified yoga instructor. “Yoga can help address some of the physical pain you feel as well as the emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies it.” Maeda will present “Yoga and Chronic Pain” on Tuesday, December 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. The class is part of Washington Hospital’s Totally Good Information for Females program and will be held in the Conrad E. Anderson, M.D. Auditorium, Room A, 2500 Mowry Avenue, in Fremont. You need to preregister for the class, which is limited to 15 participants. To register and prepay the $15 fee, call (510) 608-1301. The class is open to women who are dealing with pain on a regular basis. Some of the most common causes of chronic pain include arthritis, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, and cancer. “Even if you have limited mobility, this class can help,” Maeda said. She will start the class by discussing different types of pain, including physical, emotional, and spiritual, and how they are all interrelated. She will help participants understand the pain response and how negative emotions like fear, anxiety and depression can intensify pain. “Understanding how pain affects you emotionally is critical,” Maeda said. “Pain can interfere with living, and that takes an emotional toll, which can make pain worse. For example, depression can deplete your energy, making it harder to cope with the pain.” It is also important to be able to identify and assess your physical pain, she said. “Is it sharp or dull; steady or intermittent? You need to be able to accu-
Learn more about yoga and how it can relieve pain and improve the quality of your life at an upcoming Washington Women’s Center class. The class will take place on Tuesday, December 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be held in the Conrad E. Anderson, M.D. Auditorium, Room A, 2500 Mowry Avenue, in Fremont. You need to preregister for the class, which is limited to 15 participants. To register and prepay the $15 fee, call (510) 608-1301.
rately describe your pain to your physician,” she explained. “Write it down so you can give your doctor a clear picture of what’s going on with you.” Moving Toward Relief According to Maeda, yoga can help decrease physical pain while improving your ability to cope with it. “Yoga helps you get in the moment, concentrate on
the here and now so you can cope with what is,” she explained. “The focus on breathing and relaxation also reduces stress, which is important because stress causes muscles to tighten and hurt.” Studies show that gentle stretching and movement can decrease the intensity and duration of pain, according to Maeda. It helps to reduce muscle stiff-
ness and tension, alleviating pain along the spine, including in the shoulders and upper back, she explained. She will first teach the class a gentle yoga sequence while participants sit in a chair. “We begin by being aware of what is going on with the body and honoring the body for where it’s at,” she said. “Body awareness is critical. You need to be aware of your body so you know what you can and can’t do; know your limits so you only do what is appropriate and keep your body safe. Body awareness also helps you stay present, be in the moment.” She will guide the group through movements that increase range of motion by gently stretching major joints like the shoulders and hips. Next, participants who are able to stand will learn some gentle poses that increase circulation and respiration. “Breathing is very important,” Maeda said. “Anyone dealing with chronic pain and stress tends to have a shallow breathing pattern. Yoga gets them breathing deeper, which helps bring oxygen to the brain and other major organs. Deep breathing also helps to alleviate depression.” Yoga can also help participants feel more control over their bodies, which also improves their ability to cope with pain, Maeda explained. “Resistance to your situation can often cause more pain,” she said. “A lot of people who suffer from chronic pain are very hard on themselves. My goal is to help people be kind and compassionate toward themselves. The class is a way to see if yoga can help you feel better and talk to others who share your struggles.” For more information about other programs and services offered by the Washington Women’s Center, visit www.whhs.com/womenscenter. mmm

Doing real science with NASA You can control it to help scientists make new discoveries. And you may be able to do it right from your own school. Several years ago, this particular radio telescope was used to communicate with NASA spacecraft as they explored the solar system. Now NASA no longer needs it, and has given the telescope to You can move an object that weighs 850,000 pounds with one finger. Really. This weighty object is a huge telescope—a radio telescope. Most telescopes are like really sharp eyes for looking at the light from stars and planets. This telescope is more like a superduper ear that hears another kind of “light” from space called radio waves. Using just your mouse finger— and your brain—you can turn and tilt this telescope.
a special school so that students can learn to use it and understand what real science is all about. Now the telescope is called the “Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope.” The telescope sits solidly in the Southern California Mojave Desert. The school, called the Lewis Center for Educational Research, is quite a few miles away. You can’t even see the telescope from the school. But that doesn’t matter, because the students operate the telescope using the internet. What’s more, students all over the USA operate this telescope using the internet! Teachers come to the Lewis Center to learn all about the GoldstoneApple Valley Radio Telescope and about radio astronomy. Then, they go back to their schools and teach the students. A human is very tiny compared to the 34-meter (111.5-foot) wide antenna of the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope. The big dish rotates and tilts to receive radio waves from particular locations in space.
Together, they work with real scientists and do real astronomy research. So far, students all across the country have used telescope to make brand new discoveries about gas giant planets Jupiter and Uranus, about quasars (mysterious objects that put out more energy each second than our Sun does in 200 years), about black holes, and about the Moon. You and your teachers can learn more about the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope program at http://deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/ds n/gavrt. Meanwhile, play “Uplink-Downlink” at http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/en/kids/dsn, and see how these big radio telescopes communicate with NASA’s solar-system-exploring spacecraft. n two seasons in Women’s Professional Soccer, the Bay Area-based FC Gold Pride have had a whirlwind experience. That experience came to an abrupt halt earlier this week. On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Pride officially folded its operations, leaving WPS less than two months after capping off a remarkable season with a 4-0 triumph in the WPS Championship (Sept 26. vs. the Philadelphia Independence). FC Gold Pride became the third team in WPS to fold, joining the Los Angeles Sol (January 2010) and St. Louis Athletica (May 2010). When St. Louis severed its allegiance from WPS in May – in midseason – it forced the league to think on its toes, essentially rescheduling the entire year so each team played the full 24-game regular season.
WHAT’S HAPPENING’S TRI-CITY VOICE
With the 2009 regular season champion Sol, since its halt of operations took place in the off season, WPS held a Dispersal Draft – vastly organized; however, since St. Louis folded during the season, all players were lumped into a free agency pool. Instead of players dispersed evenly throughout the league, players could sign anywhere, which led to a handful of players – Hope Solo, Eniola Aluko, Tina Ellertson, Carolyn Blank and Lori Chalupny – signed with one team, the Atlanta Beat. Hoping to avoid the situation that unfolded in 2010 with St. Louis, teams were required to give WPS a deposit which essentially committed itself for the entire season. Previously, teams were asked to give a bond that wasn’t nearly as much as the current asking price (financial terms are not disclosed in WPS).
Initially, the deadline to provide the league with the deposit was set for Nov. 1. Four teams – Gold Pride, Chicago Red Stars, Boston Breakers and Washington Freedom – did not meet the deadline. WPS, not willing to cease league operations, extended the deadline to Nov. 15. Boston and Washington, along with the Atlanta Beat, Philadelphia Independence, inaugural champion Sky Blue FC and the 2011 expansion club from Western New York, have committed to the 2011 season. Chicago was also granted a month’s extension, allowing them to pursue investors until Dec. 15. For the Pride, however, it’s the end of the line. “While it is disappointing to the league and its many enthusiastic fans, players and partners that FC Gold Pride did not find the level of support it aimed for in its market, the

continuing WPS teams have fully committed to the 2011 WPS season,” said WPS CEO Anne-Marie Eileraas. “These past few weeks have been critical to ensuring the long-term health of the league, and we are pleased to be moving forward today with these six committed teams for the 2011 Season. We are hopeful that Chicago will also join those teams for 2011.” After the deadline to provide WPS with the funds to commit to another season, the Pride began introductory conversations with potential investors. But the timeframe was not large enough, and no commitments were made. “We have exhausted our options, and it is with a heavy heart we close operations,” said Pride owner Nancy NeSmith. “We are grateful to have been a part of Women’s Professional Soccer, and we wish all the teams and the league great success in 2011 and beyond.” Gold Pride has gone through ups and downs, both on and off the field. After committing to WPS later than any other club, the Pride got off on the wrong foot, stumbling to a league-worst 4-10-6 record in the inaugural season while calling Santa Clara University’s Buck Shaw Stadium its “home”. But after picking up Marta
(Dispersal Draft) and Camille Abily (trade) from the Sol, along with Kelley O’Hara, Ali Riley and Becky Edwards (2011 WPS Draft), then adding Shannon Boxx (free agency after Athletica folded), the Pride dominated the league in 2010. Their complete turnaround consisted of a move from SCU to Cal State University-East Bay’s Pioneer Stadium, followed by a 16-3-5 record (17 points better than any other club), most goals scored, least goals allowed, biggest goal differential and a WPS Championship. “Don’t get me wrong, winning a championship was great,” said Pride GM Ilisa Kessler. “But I would trade the championship for more years in the league. (Gold Pride) was here for more than winning championships.” Being the lone West Coast club in WPS (after the folding of Los Angeles) proved to be too much of a grind for the Pride, slashing into their budget severely with numerous crosscountry trips. Diminished ticket sales also played a factor in the Pride’s decision to bow out of WPS. All the Pride players will now become free agents, available to be signed by any team. Free agency began on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at midnight.

BY GIOVANNI ALBANESE JR. In January 2010, Cal State University-East Bay and FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer agreed to a two-year lease that allowed the eventual WPS champion to play on CSUEB’s newly renovated Pioneer Stadium. Not even a calendar year later, the Pride is extinct from professional soccer. Despite the loss of a partner which helped bring in money, for East Bay, the biggest loss was FCGP’s presence. “We hoped for a long-term relationship, but it wasn’t about money. It wasn’t our primary reasoning,” said Chris Brown, associate vice president of enterprise operations at East Bay. “They were a good partner; they treated us well; and it was a good service to the community.”
BY GIOVANNI ALBANESE JR. PHOTO BY MIKE HEIGHTCHEW Long-time Mission Valley Athletic League football coach Skip Cain has been honored by the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers. In each of the past four years, the 49ers have honored the role of unity in strengthening communities, acknowledging a nonprofit agency, youth football coach and current 49er player that demonstrated a commitment to unity around the community with the Perry/Yonamine Unity Awards. Named after former 49ers players Joe Perry and Wally Yonamine – two people who exemplify the cause to the fullest – the award winners are rewarded with a $10,000 grant that will be donated to their respective organization.
WHAT’S HAPPENING’S TRI-CITY VOICE
And while Brown noted that more people came up to East Bay than had ever done so before, not nearly enough came up to support the Pride and keep the franchise fiscally afloat. East Bay was fortunate to make a few dollars from the Pride, along with certain renovations to Pioneer Stadium that hadn’t been planned – specifically a couple light fixtures behind the press box – but it didn’t result in fans, as the Pride finished the season with the second-lowest attendance in WPS. Gold Pride had until Monday, Nov. 15, to provide WPS with a payment to ensure their commitment to the 2011 season – just a month and a half after winning the 2010 championship. WPS had also engaged discussions with prospective owners to take over the Pride but those talks fell through

the cracks, leaving the Bay area without a team. “It’s very sad to see this great operation not going forward,” said East Bay’s Director of Athletics Debby De Angelis. “It is a sad day for the advancement of women’s professional sports in the Bay area.” In the end, it’s a business decision, and Brown was happy with the tenure, albeit a short one, that the two sides shared. “Having FC Gold Pride at East Bay helped with finances and exposure,” said Brown. “They were great and showed to be a great positive to our campus and soccer program. It’s a big loss, but not a substantial financial loss at all.” FC Gold Pride will continue to pay off the bills owed for the remainder of the two-year lease, which will end in 2012.
match teacher before retiring from teaching in 2008. The $10,000 grant will go directly back to the Vikings football program – indirectly to the athletic program as a whole. Cain has coached the Vikings football team for eight seasons – continuing to coach the team after retiring from teaching two years ago – finishing the 2010 year with a 2-8 record. Cain’s most successful season with the Vikings came in 2005, when he led the team to an MVAL title with a 9-4 record overall, 6-0 in the league. Upon the selection (which is picked by a selection committee based who meets the awards’ criteria) Cain will publicly be honored at Candlestick Park in San Francisco during the 49ers game on Sunday, Nov. 21, vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Adopt a family or senior I’d also like to say that with such a huge rise in public need, there is a lot of added stress for case workers and people involved in helping to support residents in need. I see that they are dealing with really heartwrenching situations on a daily basis, and I think they deserve a big “thank-you” for their dedication. It is not an easy job for sure – and many of them are reaching into their pockets when people come for help after hours or when the ‘resource’ cupboards are bare. Please spread word about the need and encourage more participation in this wonderful holiday giving program. You will love the feeling of being involved in this! Warmest regards, Nicki Bouton Fremont

SUBMITTED BY DANIEL WILSON, ALAMEDA CO. VECTOR CONTROL An ill Mexican Free?Tailed bat found in the parking lot of Ohlone College in Fremont (11/7/2010), and subsequently delivered to San Francisco Health Department for testing. The bat tested positive for rabies antigen. The Tri?Cities Animal Shelter in Fremont, the Alameda County Public Health Department and Alameda County Vector Control were notified of the test results Wednesday afternoon (11/9/2010). This is the third bat (Livermore, Pleasanton, now Fremont) infected with rabies detected in Alameda County during 2010. The person, who initially found the bat, and submitted it for testing stated he did not handle the bat, therefore did not require rabies post exposure treatment. Handling wild animals, especially animals that are acting strangely—seemingly ill, are potential high risk contacts for rabies transmission. Even if not bitten or scratched, contact with the saliva infected with the rabies virus can be acquired through skin abrasions or mucus membrane. For this reason any person(s) who had this contact should be seen by a physician and possibly begin anti?rabies post
exposure treatment Rabies is almost always fatal once the infection begins, but treatment can effectively halt the infection. The periodic discovery of rabid animals (mostly bats) in Alameda County reinforces the need to keep your pets rabies vaccination up?to?date, and contact your local animal control (Fremont Animal Services (510) 790?6630, or Vector Control (510) 567?6826, if you notice a suspicious situation involving wildlife, foxes, ferrets or cats and dogs. All mammals are potential victims of rabies, but in Alameda County, bats are the animals most commonly detected with rabies, followed by skunks. During 2010 we detected 3 bats (including this bat) infected with rabies and no other animals in Alameda County. What is rabies and how is it transmitted? Rabies is an acutely infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. People get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. Any wild mammal, like a bat, skunk, or fox can have rabies and transmit it to people. It is also possible, but quite rare, that people may get continued on page 31

Fremont Unified School District board meeting report BY MIRIAM G. MAZLIACH The following are highlights from the Fremont Unified School District board meeting held November 10, 2010. Superintendent’s Comments: “Fremont is only one of two districts in the state to pass a local funding measure, such as Measure K. We are extremely proud and humbled to have this support from the community,” stated Superintendent Morris. Additionally, he singled out Peggy Herndon for spearheading the effort with a group of dedicated volunteers, who worked tirelessly to get the word out to the Fremont community. Herndon commented, “Over 70 percent of the voters said ‘yes’ to our schools. You need to be commended. A group of 12 committee members as well as Fremont Unified District Teachers Association (FUDTA) came to donate and help the electorate. The citizens of Fremont overwhelmingly demonstrated support for our schools.” The campaign raised $65,000 which covered most of the expenses related to publicizing Measure K to the voters. However, $18,000 is needed in order to retire the remaining debt from this undertaking. Anyone interested in donating is encouraged to send a check to: Yes on K, P.O. Box 1, Fremont CA 94537. Superintendent Morris also spoke about a successful meeting he held with the Fremont Police Department regarding a notification system for incidents at schools or in the community. “We want to make sure that we have an easy and clear system when there is an incident at a school or in the surrounding community. A
dedicated phone line is being installed, only to be used at those instances by the police to get the information out to us,” said Morris. Public Communications: Phil Swift of the Centerville Business and Community Association handed out gift certificates, valued at $100, to representatives from each of these six neighborhood elementary schools: Cabrillo, Niles, Maloney, Glenmoor, Parkmont and Vallejo Mill. Parent Gail Edwards spoke on behalf of school nurses, who are a vital part of the district. Her son had recently been helped by the school nurse at Niles Elementary, regarding his vision issues. School Board President Lara York informed the meeting attendees that Fremont, with 11 school nurses, is one of the few districts in California with such a high ratio of school nurses. Lisa Ogrey told of an upcoming presentation for parents, by the Fremont PTA, being held on November 17, from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Washington High School. For further information visit FremontCouncilPTA.org or email the speaker at lorinaylor@gmail.com. Ogrey also discussed the need for repairs on the lunch benches at Niles Elementary, which had been vandalized, leaving a group of young students without a place to sit and eat their lunches. She suggested using some of the District Facility Use Fee funds for that purpose. Scott Cantacessi, of Employee’s Union SEIU 1021, spoke out against the cuts to Maintenance and Operations & Grounds employees, which he
stated is affecting the safety of students. Board Agenda - Villa D’Este: A large contingent of parents and families from the Villa D’Este Housing Development came to to ensure that those who had lived in the area since its construction be allowed to remain within their [Ardenwood/Thornton J.H./American] attendance area. The area is already overcrowded with a large number of Ardenwood Elementary and Parkmont Elementary students being overloaded to other schools and the situation is only going to get worse. An additional 190 units are being completed for the final phase of the Villa D’Este development. “My recommendation is that we do something the school district hasn’t done in the past,” said Superintendent Morris. “We need to designate an ‘at-large’ attendance area, not to a particular set of schools and we have to assign to whatever school has space,” he added. Over a period of several hours, 15 speakers took turns addressing the Board, most stating that they had bought homes in the area a few years back, with the expectation that their children would be going to schools in the Ardenwood attendance area. “You’re taking away a social infrastructure if the students are sent to another attendance area. It’s a systemic problem,” said Villa D’Este resident Mike Chen. “Please take the families and children of that area into consideration.” Superintendent Morris clarified that there would be differentiation for students currently living in the area and attending school. “The change to another
attendance area would be only for future students who would come into the area,” he explained. Trustee Larry Sweeney stated, “Fremont is a high performing district and I believe your kids will receive the best education anywhere.” However, he commented that this is a great opportunity to have more voice in telling developers where future developments should or shouldn’t be built. School Board Trustee Ivy Wu, suggested looking into a “lease to buy” of newer property, such as a vacant building or warehouse in the Ardenwood area, to utilize for K-2 students. In that way students would be retained in their attendance area. In response, Superintendent Morris informed attendees that any place the district moves students has to be built to Field Act standards, in order to ensure the building would stand up in the event of an earthquake. “We need to hold the developers and the city accountable,” said Trustee Bryan Gebhardt. “We have tried to work to find the solution but we have to have the developers wake up and work with us. We need to tighten up our process when reviewing developments and attendance areas,” he added. After further comments and discussion, a motion was made by Trustee Sweeney and passed with 6 ayes. It stated that after Staff delineates the existing number of homes in the Ardenwood/Villa D’Este, those residents will remain in the American attendance area; all other future homes/developments being built are to be assigned by the district as “at-large” [to other attendance
areas, or as space dictates]. Board Agenda – Patterson Ranch Development: This item was for up for community input and informational review only and not to be voted on at this time. Approximately 500 homes are planned in the Patterson Ranch development, which was recently approved by Fremont’s City Council. Space at neighborhood schools is already problematic, with many students currently being overloaded elsewhere. Several scenarios have been suggested to date: Option 1: Patterson Elementary expansion – Construction of additional classrooms and overall expansion of site to accommodate a total enrollment of 900, at an estimated cost of $16 million. Option 2: Ardenwood Elementary Sister School: - Creation of a “mega-school” with the addition of K-2/3-6 sister school on property for a total enrollment of 1400 students. Cost would be approximately $25 million. Thornton Junior High and American High School would also need to each add 14 classrooms at an approximate cost of $7 million at each of these two secondary schools. Option 3: This was proposed by a parent at the Board Meeting. It was suggested that all Patterson Ranch development students be assigned to the Kennedy Attendance area. Several young students, who currently attend Ardenwood Elementary, spoke out against turning it into a mega-school, continued on page 31

which would decrease their green park and play areas. Most Board members agreed that the Kennedy Attendance area
option was a good idea but that all options need to be considered. Superintendent Morris indicated that he will take this back
to Staff to determine what the plan would look like if Patterson Ranch students were to be assigned to the Kennedy Atten-
dance area. “We won’t solve this problem today, but we’ve had a healthy discussion and will continue to look at addi-
tional options,” he stated in conclusion.

rabies if infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, gets directly into their eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound. Because rabies is a fatal disease, the goal of public health is first, to prevent human exposure to rabies by education and second, to prevent the disease by anti?rabies treatment if exposure occurs. Thousands of people are successfully treated each year after being bitten by an animal that may have rabies. A few people die of rabies each year in the United States, usually because they do not recognize the risk of rabies from the bite of a wild animal and do not promptly seek medical advice. Bat contact is one of the highest?risks for rabies, especially when people or their pets are exposed and think their incidental contact was so slight that there is not a problem. Why should I know about rabies? Rabies is a fatal disease if left untreated soon after the time of exposure. Rabies virus acquired from bats has caused most of the recent human rabies cases acquired in California. Awareness of the facts about rabies can help people protect themselves, their families and their pets. This information may also help clear up misunderstandings about the rabies risk in our area. In California from 1997 to 2009, rabies has been detected in 3,380 animals, with 6 fatal human cases (4 acquired outside California and two acquired from bats in California). Bats are the leader with 2,060 detected with rabies, and skunks are slightly behind with
1,166. The next closest runner?up is the fox with 99, and followed by dogs (18) and cats (17). During this same time, period 103 rabid animals were detected in Alameda County (74 bats, 27 skunks, 1 fox, and one opossum). As of November 9th this year, 109 bats, 19 skunks, 4 foxes, 1 coyote, and one dog (a total of 134 animals) have been detected with rabies in California. Alameda County is a “declared rabies area” and rabies vaccination is mandatory for dogs over 4 months old. Vaccination helps protect your pet, and reduce the rabies exposure potential to you, your family, and neighbors. If your dog or cat is involved in a bite to a human or other animal, state law mandates “rabies quarantine” (isolation from people or animals) for the biting animal (usually 10 days). An unvaccinated dog, or cat that has contact with a biting animal that is subject to rabies, and that is not apprehended for quarantine or testing, will have to be vaccinated, and undergo six?month quarantine. Vaccinated dogs or cats will have to be re?vaccinated, and monitored for 30 days in quarantine. For the above reasons, having up?to?date rabies vaccination is very important to you, your family, and your pet. Six?month quarantine is a long time for a dog or cat to be isolated. BY SUE MANNING ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER LOS ANGELES (AP), Oct 1 - So your dog follows your every move around the house. Now, when you leave home, you can follow your dog. Puppy Tweets is an electronic dog tag with a sensor that you attach to your dog’s collar. It detects your pet’s movements and sounds and sends a variety of tweets to a Twitter page you set up for your dog on a computer or smart phone. You can invite all your friends to be followers, too. The new Mattel Inc. novelty is aimed at the pet-loving social network crowd, said spokeswoman Rachel Cooper. There are 500 tweets programmed into the software that comes with the .05-ounce devices, available in blue and pink. The frequency of messages is directly related to the activity level of your dog, she said. If a dog is very active, he could tweet: “Chasing everything that moves is definitely a full time job!’’ If he is sleeping, his inactivity might trigger the message: “Your comforter does just what its name says it does.’’ To guard against repetition, El Segundo-based Mattel was adding 200 free tweets this week to the message library, Cooper said. Bethenny Frankel, the star of “Bethenny Getting Married?’’ and one of “The Real Housewives of New York,’’ and her dog Cookie hosted the official launch of Puppy Tweets in New York Thursday night. A limited number of the tags went on sale earlier this year. Some buyers on Amazon.com complained about software problems, which Cooper said the company was working on and had mostly resolved. The tags won’t work on small dogs or cats, she said. And you can retweet messages as they come in, but you can’t reply - at least not yet, Cooper said. Online: http://puppytweet.com
