The devastating effect of diamond and gold mining on the environment is well documented. In many underdeveloped parts of the world, mining corporations exploit weak governments and lax environmental laws to strip mine and chemically extract diamonds and gold from the earth. These destructive processes often leave behind a poisoned, dead landscape, not to mention the exploitation of workers who are often unfairly treated. How Can You Evaluate Our Products? It is hard to evaluate a product unless you first start with what you know. Chances are you already know a lot about diamonds. Diamonds are generally evaluated by assessing the 4 C’s: Clarity, Color, Cut, and Carat Weight. - Clarity describes the purity of a diamond. This is determined by the number, size, nature, and location of the internal inclusions and external imperfections. The highest purity rating attainable is IF (internally flawless). All of our stones are IF rated. - Color describes the amount of color a diamond contains. The color scale ranges from absolutely colorless (D color) which is the most perferred, all the way down to colors that can be quite gray and muddy looking. In addition to white stones, diamonds can come in some pretty intense colors called “fancy colors” which can be yellow, red, pink, blue, and even green. But when most people think of a diamond, they are thinking of the traditional white diamond. All of our stones are D color.
- Cut speaks to the way a diamond’s proportions are created. It is really quite mathematical. A perfectly cut diamond will yield the most fire and brilliance. In the jewelry industry, there is an ideal cut formula which was first developed by Marcel Tolkowsky, a Belgian diamond cutter and engineer who in 1919 developed this optimal cut to bring out the most fire in a diamond. Take a look at “The Art of Gemstone Cutting” on page 8 to learn more about this cut called “Hearts and Arrows.” All of our stones are cut to the same standards and exacting measurements first developed by Marcel Tolkowsky. - Carat is the unit of weight for a diamond. In nature, large diamonds are much rarer than small ones, so they will come with a much higher price tag. A three carat stone may be priced as high as twenty times the price of a one carat stone. Diamond Nexus gemstones are not subject to this issue of size scarcity: all of our stones carry the same per-carat price.

However, our labs produce the same thing that mother nature does when creating a diamond: a rough, uncut, raw stone. Releasing the fire, brilliance, and beauty of the stone, requires the artistry of a worldclass gemcutter. A perfectly cut gemstone refracts light in a very specific way. Asscher Cut: a beautifully unique, antique cut developed in the early 1900’s. The beauty of this elegant cut is that it draws the eye deep into the stone’s center, which is the exact opposite of modern gem cuts in which the facets repel the eye in the name of brilliance.
Emerald Cut: a step cut with broad, flat planed facets. The emerald cut shows less brilliance and dispersion (fire) than the other brilliant cut diamonds, but it has a classic elegance preferred by many. Its large, open table highlights a stone’s clarity.
Oval Cut: very similar to a round except it is elliptical. Invented in the early 1960s, this shape has a bigger surface area than a round with the same carat weight, and therefore is an excellent option for those looking for the brilliance of the round in a larger size.
