Italian Circus Joins Carnation festival tradition
T
he Zoppé Italian Family Circus, an Italian Cultural Village, and a pie-baking contest are the newest additions to this year’s Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival, Fri. and Sat., Aug. 17 and 18, at Anderson Park, 4355 Field St. And thanks to Jeffco Schools’ buses, getting there will be less of a hassle. The circus includes acrobatics, clowns, horses and dog acts, housed under a 63-foot tent, which will be raised 7 a.m. Friday – the public is invited to watch. Circus admission is $15 ($20 for VIP seating), and performances continue through Aug. 26. Italian food, wine tastings, vendors, artisans and Italian culture can be found in the Italian Cultural Village, and local chefs will mimic “American Idol” in judging Wheat Ridge’s best pastries in “American Pidol”. Other new festival attractions include a chili cook off and salsa dancing. As in years past, a midway, rides, food, a spaghetti supper, and two nights of fireworks are part of the fete. The Carnation Festival Parade starts 10 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 18, on
38th Avenue between Wadsworth and Sheridan. Free activities for kids include the Kids Craft Central booth and performances by Lewis the Magician. The Butterfly Pavilion will bring Rosie the tarantula and other interesting insects, and HawkQuest will bring birds of prey. Saturday afternoon there will be a remote-control model airplane demonstration on the baseball diamond. Jerry Nealon is serving as the Festival’s count for 2012, with Milly Nadler taking the chair as countess. Denise Waddell, 2012 Grand Marshall, will lead the parade down 38th Avenue, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug.18. A fine arts sale has been added to the Wheat Ridge Art League’s juried show. And the Rocky Mountain Quarter Midget Association will provide a racecar demonstration. Jefferson County Schools will shuttle participants to and from parking lots at Everitt Middle (3900 Kipling St.), Wheat Ridge Middle (7101 W. 38th Ave.) and

elebrating Colorado’s diverse artists and musicians and sharing Celtic culture, the third annual Celtic Harvest Festival Edgewater will feature nine of the state’s best Celtic bands, plus traditional pipe bands, dancers and a ceremonial calling of the clans, Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 15 & 16, at Citizen’s Park, 24th & Benton, west of Sloans Lake. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, and admission is free. Heading up contemporary musical lineup are Indulgers, Colcannon, DelallaBartsch, Mulligan Stew, Deb and the Pariahs, Delilah’s’ Revenge, Beth and Margot, Jon & Adam & Emily, and Wicked Shehogue, playing throughout both days of the festival. To add an exciting, traditional flair there are Pipe Bands, Celtic Dancers and, on Saturday evening, a Clan Ceilidh and ceremonial calling of the Clans.
The Renaissance Scots Reenactment Village will provide hands-on experiences to learn about life in highland Scotland in the early 1600s, before the Battle of Culloden. Guests can test their skills by engaging in a sword fight with the master Scots, or shop in the Celtic Marketplace and Farmer’s Market, while indulging in a variety of food and drinks, including Scotch and Oskar Blues Brews. Celtic clans will present clan history, traditions and genealogy, as well as a Saturday evening clan ceilidh—the ceremonial calling of the clans. Hawkquest will entertain and educate with their birds of prey. The children’s area will feature sheep herding lessons, Celtic-themed games, and crafts for children of all ages, face painters, balloon art, and storytelling. 4H will give demonstrations in rocketry and leather works, and Cosmic Circle Puppets will stage a whimsical puppet show. Dogs of the British Empire will showcase more than 20

reathe Easy Wheat Ridge is a coalition of residents, businesses, and organizations working to build community support for smoke-free bar and restaurant patios, parks and playgrounds, bus stops, hospital sidewalks, all indoor workplaces, and 25 feet around workplace entrances. While people may know about the popularity and benefits of smoke-free indoor environments, more communities across Colorado and the US are making outdoor public places smoke-free for health, safety, and appeal. Colorado’s statewide smoke-free law passed in 2006 to protect residents, workers, and visitors but did not cover all indoor workplaces or outdoor areas such as patios, parks, playgrounds or transit waiting areas. As a result of local and state law, Arvada parks, playgrounds, patios of bars and restaurants, and all indoor workplaces are smoke-free. In fact,more than 20 communities in Colorado have adopted local provisions stronger than the state law removing indoor exemptions and/or making outdoor areas such as patios, parks and playgrounds smoke-free. “The benefit of smoke-free air is clear and people are expecting to breathe smoke-free air where they work and recreate,” said Sarah Davis, Wheat Ridge resident and Chair of Breathe Easy Wheat Ridge. The coalition’s endorsement list for a stronger law in Wheat Ridge includes several hundred residents and a diverse mix of organizations and businesses including Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Live Well Wheat Ridge, Family Tree, Abrusci’s Restaurant, Cebiche’s Restaurant, Dragonfly Café, Right Coast Pizza, Wheat Ridge Cyclery, Cress Kitchen and Bath, Compass Construction, Heavenly Harvest Produce, Jefferson County Public Health, the American Lung Association, and Jefferson County PTA. The driver of many of the policies is science behind the dangers of tobacco smoke exposure. According to the most recent Surgeon General’s report on tobacco smoke, there is no safe level of exposure and it contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds of toxic or cancer causing chemicals such as arsenic, benzene, and hydrogen cyanide. In addition to the health impact, the 2006 Surgeon General’s report on secondhand smoke found “Evidence from peer-reviewed studies shows that smoke-free policies and regulations do not have an adverse economic impact on the hospitality industry.” In 2010, a study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found Pueblo Colorado’s smoke-free law passed in 2003 did not have negative economic impact

and may have contributed to an increase in sales tax revenue for Pueblo. “We believe our proposal is not only great for public health but a win for Wheat Ridge and its ongoing work to bring new families and businesses to our community,” Davis added. “Preliminary results from a recent survey of households in surrounding communities about the appeal of stronger smoke-free protections in Wheat Ridge are encouraging,” she said. What’s Happening Walking Audit Aims to Make Streets Complete Wheat Ridge’s pedestrians will get their chance to help the city improve the safety and walkability of 38th Avenue during a Walking Audit, Tues., Aug. 21, 5:30-7 p.m., starting in front of Wheat Ridge Cyclery, 7085 W. 38th Ave. The audit is a diagnostic tool used to assess the walking environment of a street, school environment, or neighborhood, usually conducted by a pedestrian design expert, who leads residents, traffic engineers, and others on a walk and points out deficiencies such as missing sidewalks or curb ramps, obstacles, and dangerous street crossings. During the evening, participants will receive a brief update on the 38th Avenue Corridor Plan, the latest roadway improvements to make the roadway pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly, and efforts to measure bicycle and pedestrian use throughout the redesign process. They’ll be given an overview of the walking audit tool, then break into small groups to walk a portion of the Avenue (near High Court) with an audit checklist to record observations, reconvening later to share observations, opinions and recommendations.

Options Abound during Wr rec Center Closure The Wheat Ridge Recreation Center will be closed for regularly scheduled annual maintenance, Mon.-Fri., Aug. 27-31, but lap swimmers and participants in SilverSneakers and CancerFit programs will be able to continue their workouts at other venues. The Wheat Ridge Outdoor Pool, located in Anderson Park at 4355 Field St., will be open for lap swimming only from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the lap pool closure at the rec center (Aug. 20-Sept. 7, or until completion of replastering, whichever is sooner). The pool officially closes for the season at 6:30 p.m. on Thur., Aug. 16. Lap swimmers may show their annual pass or punch card for free admission or pay the daily drop-in fee; fees vary based on residency. Wondering what’s up with the RTD’s Gold Line rail project since groundbreaking last year? Get back in the know when project contractor Denver Transit Partners holds an RTD FasTracks Gold Line/Northwest Rail Open House Wed., Aug. 22, at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, 4005 Kipling St. A second open house will be held at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., on Thur., Aug. 23. The Gold Line is an 11.2-mile electric commuter rail line that is part of the RTD FasTracks transit expansion program, and will run along the railroad route from Denver Union Station to Ward Road in Wheat Ridge, passing through northwest Denver, Adams County and Arvada. The Gold Line and Northwest Rail (the FasTracks project that will connect downtown Denver to Boulder and Longmont) will share the alignment from Denver Union Station to Pecos Street. The project has seven stations planned, located at 41st, Pecos, Federal, Sheridan, Olde Town, Arvada Ridge and Ward Road. Construction will begin this fall with the line opening in 2016. Keep Our Fire Department The Edgewater Fire Department has been the heart and soul of this city since 1915 and to read of its possible demise in a letter with little explanation to its citizens is concerning. [It is] a decision that will impact our homeowners with higher taxes and lower property value due to a longer response time. Eighty to 90 percent of EFD’s calls are first aid calls, which PrideMark Ambulance Service responds to. Why do we need a 75-foot aerial fire truck to also respond, which would cut manpower and costs? I was unaware, and believe most citizens are as well, that PrideMark has used our fire station for housing, or have heard of any problems for them doing so. Saying the equipment is outdated, most pumpers do not likely have 2,000 hours logged. I have not researched this, suggestions only for keeping our fire department. The city should use the newsletter or water billing to inform our citizens on these issues in advance. City works have been cut and possibly other positions to outside businesses, contract labor, trash pickup, seeing our library being threatened to close, the historical building empty without progress. Now our fire department, what next? This city is unique with young families moving in and could slowly disappear, which should concern our elected mayor and city council and be their priority to protect.
