HABITAT LABYRINTH

“Exploring Modularity in Mass Housing”

In essence, “Habitat Labyrinth” is a housing project with modularity at its center. The project explores various ways in which modularity can be incorporated. The modular approach is used when designing clusters, masses, materials, and services. This design serves the basic aspects of housing and promotes customization according to the site area, context, and climate. It is modular and does not focus on any specific site. The design included is one of the many options explored. Using a maze as an inspiration, the form concept is based on the name. In the form of multiple courtyards, gathering spaces, and unobstructed views from maximum longitudinal facades, vertical and horizontal inspirations are drawn and explored.

By subdividing a system into standard units, modular design can build a building in a variety of ways. The voids and spaces formed as a result of arranging modules are used as terrace gardens. It also forms many different-sized courtyards thus forming pockets of public space each dedicated to a different activity. The stairwell acts as the main core and takes the load structurally. 3 different sized units are arranged on the same floor thus reducing the class based isolation and thus making it a community as well as a residence.

“Rethinking Substance Abuse Rehabilitation”

According to the reports, Gujarat is third-worst hit state with rising Substance overdose cases. Only few Rehab cen ters provide such facility, others are a floor or room within the hospital building. So, there is a need to build a more stimulating space considering the current scenario. Due to the lack of proper rehab in the state, people were looking for them outside the state which makes it difficult for the patient to see their family members on regular basis. The rehabs available in Gujarat were either too expensive for the mass to afford or wasn’t full filling the ideal factors of a rehab center. My project focuses on providing an Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, where Patients are supposed to undergo an extensive 30-35 days of care involving physical, medical and recreational therapies. The design focuses on providing an inclusive environment for the patient to grow and find a greater purpose. It aims on providing a balance between ‘Freedom’ and ‘Discipline’

Site is located near Karai dam which falls in Chiloda district under AUDA. It is accessible to both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The noticeable feature is the surrounding natural elements and quiet and calm context.

SITE SELECTION CRITERIAS: 1. ACCESSBILE TO BOTH MAJOR CITIES; Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar 2. BALANCE between Inclusion and Isolation 3. SECURITY 4. CALM AND SERENE environment

Basic zoning and ideas were developed in this stage. Use of elements, levels and curves is figured out. Moreover response to climate and context is taken as driving factors while doing so. Level Differences (forming overlooking spaces), Ramp as an ‘Element’ (main circulation between all levels) and curved and organic spaces. More sectional and spatial connections to context and other built masses.

‘Freedom+Discipline’ concept is carried out. Forms remain organic but center of space and openings giving a focal point is thought of. The zoning is changed and arranged following and axis derived by locating view points.

BAWA PAVILION

“Tribute Project to Geoffrey Bawa”

Softwares used: SketchUp/ AutoCad/ Photoshop/ Ind]Design/

This project aimed to design a ‘Pavilion’ dedicated to a known Architect (in my case, Geoffrey Bawa). Here, the focus is laid upon the architectural principles, philosophy of Bawa, studying then and applying those in an individual approach to design space which is a hub for architects and students from around the globe to know about his work and appre ciate the architecture which speaks ‘BAWA’. Pavilion in itself is an exhibition, but apart from that; separate exhibition spaces and a sample house (comprising of his typical architectural style) are also given in the program.

Amphi theatre for recreational purpose. Also provides a view and a pause point for the visiters. Connects two or more levels. Also acts as a connect ing space to the other built masses. Semi-open exhibition following a tropical style creating maze like movements leads us plesantly and gradually to the top most level. Overall, Bawa’s pavilion is designed using Bawa’s philosophy and techniques, but with an individual thought process amal gamated with it. There are four major building units crept inside the sloped site, together forming a huge courtyard with various amenities. The amphitheater in the center gives the user connection to each unit visually and approachable as well. It also offers the best possible view of the lake. The slope of the roof is in such a direction that it follows the natural contour of the site offering its respect toward it. The orientation of the units is also kept keeping the slope of the site in mind.

The clinic’s design is simple yet bold at points. It sets an example of balancing in terms of geometry, color, and material palette, and utilize as much area as we can. The dental area is raised by 9” to carry out

palette, while also keeping functionality in mind. The main goal was to maximize the functionality of the space out the plumbing services mandatory to carry out dental activities

wAITING aREA

Reception and waiting are the spaces where the patients have to kill time. so, an attempt is made is to make it the most lively space by using pop-up colors and the emphasis laid on geometry by creating horizontal and vertical line composition which balances each other out.

RUINS OF HEMKUTA:

The documentation was part of Research Study Program organised by Anant National University where we visited the Hampi, Karnataka for mea sure drawing of the ruins of temple. The documentation included measuring, drawing, studying and sketching various temples and its details. The Hemakuta hill is sprinkled with ancient temples that belong to both, pre-Vijayanagara as well as Vijayanagara periods. A large number of these temples dates back to 9th to 14th century and hence, belong to the era before the Vijayanagara Empire was founded. Among the Hemakuta group of temples, some are in total ruins while some are in comparatively better condition. Some of the temples have partially sunk to the ground. The Archaeological Survey of India is undertaking efforts to renovate these temples and bring back their lost glory. Some of the temples that had escaped destruction during the Mughal invasions have suffered damage from the wear and tear of weather.

POL HOUSES OF AHMEDABAD:

The documentation was part of Summer School organised by Anant National University where we visited the ‘pol’ (vernacular) houses of walled city. This world was also a part of an initiative of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation documenting Heritage Houses which were to be preserved under UNESCO’s world hertitage cities. Pols were originally made as a protection measure when communal riots necessitated greater security probably dating from 1738 during Mughal-Maratha rule (1738–1753) in Ahmedabad. A typical pol would have only one or two entrances and also some se cret entrances known only to people residing in a pol. Some pols contain old beautiful houses with internal courts having intricate wooden carved facades with columns and fresco work done around court walls or ceilings. Pol architecture is an interesting evolution in urban living space
