President’s Letter

TDMAW excels at the 13TH Biennial Wisconsin Manufacturing & Technology Show

I

am so proud and humbled by the united t e a m w o r k displayed by so many members, partners, sponsors and the Wisconsin Apprenticeship Board at the Wisconsin Manufacturing & Technology Show (WMTS) at State Fair Park on October 8, 9 and 10. Sharing the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp (WEDC) booth built a strong bridge between our organizations. This will be great assistance to each of us as we individually and collectively try to attract new business to this region of the state. The visibility of this booth was a vital tool to our goal of attracting new members and new beneficial sponsors and advertisers. I feel extremely confident in saying that we will experience growth in all of these important areas. As a WMTS Manufacturing Labor Initiative Sponsor, we were also able to interact with area students and faculty during Student Day. Pointing out the positive career paths offered by manufacturing will hopefully lead to growing our future workforce and allow Wisconsin to be the #1 Manufacturing State in the United States for decades to come. Lastly, regarding our WMTS participation, the new ad hoc women’s committee, empoWer, was well received, collecting about 40 signatures from women at the Show that want to become involved and encourage women to pursue careers in manufacturing. (See the empoWer article in this edition of Surgeon’s of Steel).

Working to close the Skills Gap

Our latest ad hoc effort, uniting with workforce development boards, technical colleges and area non-profit employment agencies (like GPS and Milwaukee Job Corps), was launched with a roundtable discussion on October 9th. The goal of this initial meeting was to determine common interests that would assist member companies in finding, educating

and/or retain workers; possibilities of this initiative include providing or developing financial solutions or grants. I am proud to say it was a major success. The following organizations were represented: • DW Development – WI Fast Forward • Gateway Technical College • GPS Education Partners (formerly Second Chance) • MATC • Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board • Milwaukee Job Corps Center • Waukesha County Technical College • WOW Workforce Development, Inc. • WRTP / BIG STEP Thank you to Doug Brockelman and Mary Wehrheim from Stanek Tool, and Jen Marti from Busch Precision, for their participation and providing a member perspective. Thanks also to Gary Swick from Swick Technologies, for a TDMAW Partner perspective. Based on the positive feedback of this group, we will help organize these valuable resources in 2014 and report progress to members.

2013-14 Kick-Off Member Meeting on October 8th was truly a “Perfect 10.”

• W e welcomed three new members and presented their membership plaques: -The Kinetic Company: Ken Coombs and John Sobocinski - Riverstone Machining: Beau Lane -Southwest Metal Finishing: Nicole Busalacchi and Tom Gray • A great “tailgate” buffet and lively networking with one hundred attendees (room capacity) • Presentation by Author Karin Lindner about her book “How Can We Make Manufacturing Sexy?” Keynote speaker, Wayne Larrivee was insightful in his presentation: How to be a Winner. When he fully turned his attention to the Green Bay Packers “Packer Nation” came alive so he answered 15 minutes of overtime questions. His “Dagger” closing phrase definitely made the event a 100% success.

n 2011, following years of significant donations to area technical colleges and the BotsIQ Wisconsin program, the Board of Directors set a goal to rebuild the TDMAW treasury. The Reserve minimum was set at eight to twelve month’s operating expenses, to be reached within five years. To accomplish this goal, an aggressive 20% minimum growth in Retained Earnings was added to the annual budget. -We are pleased to report that we on target to reach this goal. Wisconsin Manufacturing and Agriculture Credit

W

isconsin is well known for our manufacturing leadership. And because innovations in this industry continue to create a competitive advantage for our state, we provide specific incentives to manufacturers to maximize their production here. Chief among them is the Manufacturing and Agriculture Credit, which virtually eliminates the tax on income from manufacturing activity in the state. How It Works The manufacturing and agriculture tax credit is available to individuals and entities for taxable years that begin on or after January 1, 2013, for manufacturing and agricultural activities in Wisconsin. The tax credit is available for income derived from manufacturing or agricultural property located in Wisconsin and will offset a significant share of Wisconsin income taxes. The credit is a percentage of “eligible qualified production activities income.” It is being phased in as follows: • Tax year 2013 = 1.875% • Tax year 2014 = 3.75% • Tax year 2015 = 5.526% • Tax year 2016 = 7.5%

For a corporation, eligible qualified production activities income is the lesser of: • eligible qualified production activities income, • income apportioned to Wisconsin, or

• income taxable to Wisconsin as determined by combined reporting law, if the corporation is a member of a Wisconsin combined group. The amount of credit not entirely offset against Wisconsin income or franchise taxes may be carried forward and credited against Wisconsin income or franchise taxes due for up to 15 years. Claiming the Credit The schedule to be used to claim the Wisconsin Manufacturing and Agriculture Credit is available on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue website. For more information about the Wisconsin Manufacturing and Agriculture Credit, contact the Wisconsin Department of Revenue at 608.266.2772 or corp@revenue.wi.gov

The second annual event served as a kick-off to Manufacturing Month in Wisconsin and the Governor took the opportunity to highlight improvements to the Wisconsin economy over the past few years. Among the many positive signs, Governor Walker highlighted the point that since the beginning of this year, over 11,000 new businesses were created in Wisconsin. Kurt Bauer, President of WMC, noted that WMC’s most recent membership survey showed that 94 percent of the state’s job creators believe Wisconsin is heading in the right direction. Bauer said he was confident in saying that “the state of Wisconsin business is strong and getting stronger.”

Federated Insurance Offers Health Reform Solution For Small Employers

F

ederated Insurance, your association’s recommended insurance carrier, has developed a strategy for small employer accounts (50 or fewer employees) to change their plan year and renew their coverage on December 1, 2013, deferring the impact of many portions of the ACA until December 1, 2014 versus January 1, 2014. Each Federated client will have the option to either change their plan year to 12/1/13 or remain on their current plan year. Electing to change their plan year to begin on December 1, 2013 will allow employers to take advantage of lower premium rates, retaining their current plan design, and possibly delaying the application of nondiscrimination rules. If you are not currently a Federated Insurance client, please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to explore your association’s recommended group health program. Federated has been a loyal supporter of our association and a trusted business partner to many of our members for years. They are here to offer you the professional counsel and innovative services that will help you navigate these uncertain times. If you are a Federated Insurance client, please expect to hear from your local Federated Insurance Marketing Representative regarding this and other health care reform solutions.

mpower , a new TDMAW Ad Hoc Committee, is a group of exciting individuals looking to expand the presence of women in and around the manufacturing sector. The vision for this group started last summer with a couple of TDMAW directors. Following, a focus group of women was formed to explore the possibilities. In early October, we had the opportunity to show our presence at two events: The Granville Chamber of Commerce luncheon and through a booth at the WI Manufacturers & Technology Show (WMTS) at State Fair Park. Listening to our peers at the WMTS, we gained even more insightful knowledge that will propel us forward. For example, the two biggest responses we received were needs for networking and mentoring; here’s why: • Each day, a significant part of doing business is not only what you know, but who you know. The ability to connect to different businesses and strategic partners across the industry can only better our organizations. • Mentoring in our industry can lead to unparalleled growth, both personally and professionally. Mentoring is both rewarding for the mentor and the mentee; both can see the shared potential of opportunities. Watch for our official launch in early 2014. We look forward to working with TDMAW members, as well as other organizations, so women can contribute its fair share into the workforce. Here’s to growth and prosperity for many years to come!

DMAW was proud to exhibit at the Wisconsin Manufacturing and Technology Show (WMTS), at WI State Fair Park, on October 8-10. Our association shared a booth with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), who has launched a new marketing campaign, promoting Wisconsin tier I, II and III manufacturers, outside WI borders. This marketing campaign is called In Wisconsin. Learn more by visiting: www.inwisconsin.org. Once on the In Wisconsin web site, be sure to look at the “Wisconsin Manufacturing and Agriculture Credit” section at the bottom of the home page, to see if you qualify for this tax credit for products made or grown in Wisconsin! Watch for our new sponsors and members, fruit of the booth.

Technology Best Practice and Industry Standards SUBMITTED BY SWICK TECHNOLOIGES, TDMAW GROUP BUYING PARTNER

W

hy is this important? Over the years I have worked at a couple of different companies and have found that when they deliver services or products to their customers, they have quality control standards to make sure the product is delivered consistently every time. You can turn to your own shop floor to see this in action.

However, what we see at our customers in their front office Information Technology Infrastructure is a collection of different computer systems and devices implemented quickly to solve a single problem at the time. As technology changes, the systems are installed and everyone hopes the new equipment will communicate with the other older systems. In Information Technology, consistency in implementation is the key to having everyone work together. With IT Standards, the configuration is created to make the most out of latest technology and have it interface properly with existing technology. When new technology is developed, best practices are determined by the various vendors to make sure you get the most out of their product offerings. Why re-invent the wheel? Other professionals have tested and proved the concepts you want to implement and know which way is going to provide the long term ease of use you are looking for.

Another benefit to standards upon implementation is work sharing and staff mobility. If everyone is using the same version of Word or Excel, files can be easily shared between staff to help with workloads. Also, if the PCs are configured with the same standard software and printers, should a PC fail,

toolmaker@TDMAW.org

that staff member can move to another station and be productive without additional re-training. Less downtime is good for productivity in the front office as well the shop floor.

Also, by following Technology Best Practices and Industry Standards, you get the right tools for the job at hand. Remember a screwdriver is not a hammer, a PC is not a Server and a network hub is not a network switch. Each device was designed for a specific purpose, and using the correct device in your network design will insure years of trouble free operation and will consistently help reduce IT Labor costs. At Swick Technologies we have company standards on how to implement IT Infrastructure. These are developed using information from the following sources, plus our 30 years of experience supporting business networks of many different sizes. Your company should develop documented network standards for your Information Technology. This will make your new system purchases easier because any new system should coordinate with the existing standards. This list is not everyone out there: • Microsoft Best Practices; on their website, every product has a set of instructions for best practices in deployment, configuration, operation and maintenance. When researching products to implement at your business, consulting this information will help you determine the best way to get the most out of your purchase. • Dell; when purchasing equipment, there are a number of ‘recommended’ options Dell will present during the configuration. For most implementations,

the recommendations should be taken. Dell also has white papers for helping design solutions to meet your business needs. • TechRepublic.com; this website has numerous articles, newsletters, reviews, and information provided by other IT industry experts. The information can be overwhelming so I suggest you consult an IT professional to do that research for you. I personally like the articles talking about the future trends in IT to see what is on the horizon that our customers can use to improve their business. Information Technology is extremely complex and ever changing. Your systems, hardware, software, servers and documentation must effectively interact inside and outside your organization. Having certified professionals manage the technology you rely on to operate your business is one way to provide Technology Best Practices and Industry Standards. Doing so will save you support labor dollars and provide consistency in software and hardware deployments. If your information technology infrastructure isn’t consistent, how can your products or services be?
