te MAniA Angus 2013 Ai siRes
Dear Breeder, Te Mania Angus is built on a gene pool already 85 years in the making and which today is Australia’s most dominant brand in Angus Group Breedplan, with more than double the number of trait leaders than any other stud. For the wider beef cattle industry the name Te Mania Angus has become the complete genetics address – providing Angus bulls, semen, embryos, elite stud cows, ET recipients and commercial females. One of the keys to this success has been the Team Te Mania program – the only one of its kind in the Angus industry. It means only our very best, proven sires are released to the market after being tested within our own herd and through Team Te Mania. Team Te Mania is a coalition of 40 beef cattle herds across SA, Victoria and NSW used for progeny testing our cutting-edge genetics and fast-tracking commercial production. The value of this progeny testing is strongly reflected in our on-property bull sales. In March we offered and sold 113 bulls, with buyers from across the country – and the world – paying up to $24,000 and the sale averaging $8663. We were the only major Angus seedstock source to see its sale average go up this year and our top-priced bull was sired by Tuwharetoa Regent D145 (see page 4). An investment in a package of this super sire’s semen is clearly money well spent, and at a vastly more commercial price. Te Mania Berkley B1 (page 3) is one of the most outstanding Australian bred sires available on the AI market, he is a consistent breeder of exceptional progeny, including the $91,000 bull Te Mania Emperor, and won’t let you down. The Te Mania Angus herd has an unwavering focus on structure, with the entire herd independently assessed by Jim Green of Beef Xcel to ensure any animal which does not meet our strict physical requirements is culled – regardless of figures. The sires listed in this catalogue are sourced from a seedstock herd which runs its animals in large contemporary groups (up to 700). These large groups act as giant filters to identify any animals not able to thrive within strict commercial conditions. The Te Mania Angus program is internationally recognised, with semen from many of the bulls retailed to many parts of the globe. Te Mania Angus is an independent seedstock supplier, which breeds, proves and delivers market-accepted genetics to the beef industry and is not beholden to any large semen companies. We hope you will read with interest the work and effort we have put into bringing these sires to the market and if you have any questions we will be more than happy to discuss them with you.

Managing an ARTIFICIAl INSEMINATION PROGRAM Fixed Time Ai Using Gnrh – The Artificial Breeding Revolution by David Plant, Southern Cross Genetics The global beef artificial breeding industry is changing and being revolutionized by new synchronisation protocols which incorporate GnRH and Fixed Time AI. Advanced hormonal treatment has allowed the elimination of conventional heat detection programs. The benefits reach far beyond the immediate genetic advantage gained from using the best bulls in timed breeding programs. Whole herd fertility and the maternal strength of any herd can be greatly increased. Females can be “set up” reproductively for life by calving in the first 21 days of the breeding cycle as two year olds. Ovulation is synchronised rather than “heat”. Handling of cattle has been reduced to three yarding’s. Experienced artificial breeding industry stalwart Ian Moreland says - “What used to take 2 ½ days now takes 2 ½ hours”
HEIFER PROTOCOL Day 0 CIDR IN & CIDIROL or GnRH Day 7 CIDR OUT & PROSTAGLANDIN Day 9 AI & GnRH (AI 54 + or – 2 hours after CIDR removal) Range in conception rates 45% to 80% COW PROTOCOL Day 0 CIDR IN & CIDIROL or GnRH Day 7 CIDR OUT & PROSTAGLANDIN & PREGNECOL (First Calvers) Optional Day 10 AI & GnRH (AI 60 – 66 hours after CIDR removal) Range in conception rates 50% to 75% Global industry average pregnancy rates from these protocols for heifers are 53% and cows 58%. Protocol compliance is not negotiable. Semen quality is very important. There is no allowance for not adhering to the times on the schedule.
Animal handling and temperament has a profound effect on the success of FTAI. There is less stress on the animals and considerable savings on labour and time. Every animal has the opportunity to get pregnant on Day 1 of the breeding season. Research into calving distribution patterns in the USA has shown that FTAI can improve the calving profile and research quoted by Dr Rick Funston from the University of Nebraska shows “a cow that calves in the first 21 day calving interval her entire 8 or 9 year life will produce the weaning weight equivalent of up to 1 ½ additional calves in her lifetime compared to the cow that starts late and stays late” There is one important thing to remember These new FTAI protocols are not a “Silver Bullet” to success, nor are they a substitute for poor reproductive management, poor nutrition or poor heifer development. Heifers should ideally be 60 – 65% of mature weight at joining (340+ kg) and have already reached puberty and be cycling regularly. Spike feeding of heifers 60 days & preferably 90 days prior to the joining date can enhance AI conception rate. Cows should be managed so they calve in good body condition and be placed on a rising plane of nutrition post calving. The post-partum interval to joining with any AI program is a minimum of 50 days and preferably 60+ days Animals with a lesser post-partum can be included but expect a lower conception rate.
Round 2 heifers at Te Mania Angus, Mortlake, November 2012, showing minimal return rate after First Round FTAI

THE HEaT iS On: TIPS ON HEAT DETECTION Artificial Insemination Artificial Insemination is one of the best tools available today for a breeder wanting to increase the genetic merit and production of their herd. The cow herd must be on a rising plane of nutrition for an artificial breeding programme to be successful. Early Signs – before the female is in standing heat •
A small string of mucous dripping out of a reclining cow is not too common and should not be confused with the more copious mucous seen when a cow is in heat.
•
Bawling when all other herd mates are quiet. This sign is observed quite often among heifers, but not often among cows.
•
The cow is more alert and observant.
•
She walks in a rapid, business-like way.
•
She is standing when all other herd mates are lying down.
•
• •
A cow may walk through her herd mates sniffing as a bull might do as he checks cows.
probably not in heat. If still in doubt about the status of the individual, sort her off with the other cows in heat. If she is in some stage of heat she will stay close to them, if she is not she will not show a continuous interest in them. •
She gives signs. She will place her head on the rump of another cow, and when she rides another cow, copious strings of mucous will often be expelled.
•
Mucous can often be seen on the side of the tail or rump.
•
Cows in heat will group together and stand closer than they normally do. If they are touching each other or only a few centimeters away from each other, they are probably in heat.
She will attempt to ride other cows not in heat. The cow stands still when other cows mount her. This is the most obvious sign of all. If there are a large number of cows in heat in the herd, there will probably be more than one cluster of cows riding each other. A cow in heat may also ride other cows in heat, so how do you tell if the cow doing the riding is in heat or not?
This can usually be determined by watching their activity for a few minutes. If you do not see the other signs of heat in the riding cow, she is
•
Several bull calves follow a cow and attempt to ride her. Occasionally a heat detector will encounter an oversexed female that will be with the in-heat group for two or three days following heat. The short cycle cow
that will come back in heat in a week or ten days after she was first heat detected may also be encountered. These should be inseminated again. Signs that a cow has just gone out of heat With some heat cycles only lasting 12 hours, some cows are easy to miss when in heat, but it is easy to tell when they have been in heat during the night. •
Wet or matted hair, especially over the top of the shoulders.
•
Hair on the tail or rump may be slightly matted where mucous has dried.
•
Mud on the hips or hair rubbed off the hips where other cows have ridden.
•
A fresh brand on the hip will be bright red for a few hours.
•
A cow that has been riding all night while in heat may be tired by morning and be one of the few cows that will be lying down.
•
Mucous will often be expelled as a breeding tube is inserted if the cow has been in heat.

A string of blood on the side of the tail or rump indicates the cow was in heat two or three days ago. If you did not detect her, you missed her.
If cows are not synchronized, an average of five percent of each group of cows should come into heat each day. If this number is not being achieved, producers need to consider whether their cows are getting enough to eat, and whether they are in good enough condition to cycle.

EBV’S: WHAT ARE THEY, HOW TO USE THEM angus gROUP BREEDPLan is an advanced genetic evaluation system that provides a genetic description of angus cattle for a large range of traits influencing fertility, growth and carcase performance. it provides predictions of the genetic merit of individual animals called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). EBVs are based on all the available pedigree and performance records provided by breeders in Australia and New Zealand, along with available overseas genetic information. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait, and are shown as +ive or –ive values. The average EBV for different traits changes over time as the breed makes genetic progress. The averages for calves born in 2011 are shown at the bottom of each page. The averages are the easiest way to compare the merits of particular animals. accuracy (%) ~ Provides an indication of the reliability of an EBV. As more performance information becomes available on an animal, it’s progeny and relatives, the accuracy of it’s EBVs for particular traits increases. The higher the accuracy, the less chance that the figure for each EBV will vary. Calving Ease Direct (%) ~ CE (dir) tells us the amount of calving ease we can expect from a particular bull, relating directly to the females he is joined to. The calving ease figures will generally only appear on the chart of a sire, but can also appear on a younger bull’s chart if there has been a lot of information gathered on his relatives. A positive value here is better. Calving Ease Daughters (%) ~ CE (dtrs) tells us the amount of calving ease we can expect from a particular bull’s daughters. A positive value here is beneficial. gestation Length (Days) ~ This figure gives us a value relating to the number of days from the date of conception to the calf birth date. A shorter gestation length is better as it gives more time for the cow to get back in calf and there is less chance of the calf getting too big in the uterus and increasing the chances of calving difficulties. A negative value here is better. Birth Wt (Kg) ~ Birth weight gives us an indication of how much the calves of a particular animal will weigh at birth. This figure should be monitored, but be careful not to go too low as this can cause problems with calf mortality and calving ease down the track. We must also remember that only a small percentage of calving 16
ease is related to birth weight. 200-Day Wt (Kg), 400-Day Wt (Kg) and 600Day Wt (Kg) ~ Estimates the genetic differences between animals in liveweight at 200, 400 and 600 days of age. For example, if you have two bulls, one with a 600 day weight figure of +70 and the other with a figure of +80, you would expect the bull who is +80 to sire calves that would average 5kgs heavier at 600 days than the other (the sire provides 50% of the genes to the calf, 10kgs divided by 2). A positive value for these growth figures is better. Mature Cow Weight (Kg) ~ This figure provides an estimate of the genetic differences between animals in cow weight at 5 years of age.
of the animal, the more muscling an animal possesses the better, so the higher the value here the better. RiB anD RUMP FaT (MM) ~ Ultrasound scanning is also used to calculate these figures which estimate the genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the 12/13th rib site (Rib Fat) and P8 rump site (Rump Fat), in a 300 kg carcase. Very fat cattle may produce less yield, however cattle that are too lean, may run into fertility problems, so these figures need to be monitored. The best way to monitor yield and fertility however, is by not necessarily concentrating on fat, but by keeping an eye on yield and fertility!
Milk (Kg) ~ The Milk figure provides an estimate of the genetic differences between animals in milk production, expressed as a variation in the 200-day weight of their daughter’s calves. Angus cattle generally don’t have a problem providing enough milk for their offspring, so we don’t really need to worry too much about pushing this figure. Too much milk can lead to udder problems and difficulty in getting back in calf, so try to keep it positive, but remember the implications of too much milk.
Retail Beef Yield % (Rby%) ~ RBY% tells us the expected genetic differences between animals in percentage retail beef yield, in a 300kg carcase. A positive figure here is better.
Scrotal Size (Cm) ~ This figure tells us about the scrotal circumference of an animal at 400 days of age. We measure scrotal size because there is a strong, positive correlation between scrotal size and fertility in the male and female offspring. The larger the testicles, the higher the likelihood of that bull siring more fertile daughters and getting more females in calf. A positive figure here is better.
net Feed intake (nFi)
Days To Calving ~ DC tells us about female fertility, it is expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. A more fertile cow, i.e. one that gets in calf earlier is obviously more beneficial in a breeding program. A negative value here is better. Carcase Weight (Kg) ~ Carcase weight provides us with an estimate of the variation in carcase weight of a particular animal’s progeny at slaughter( this figure is adjusted to 650 days of age). EYE MUSCLE aREa (Cm2) ~ Results from ultrasound scanning of cattle at 15 – 18 months of age is used to calculate the expected genetic differences between animals in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site, in a 300kg carcase. This figure gives us a good idea of the muscling ability
intra-Muscular Fat % (imf%) ~ Marbling is very important for the premium markets. We can use ultrasound scanning (highly correlated to actual marble score) to provide us with an EBV that estimates the genetic differences between animals in marbling at the 12/13th rib site, in a 300 kg carcase. A positive value here is better. Estimates of the genetic differences in the feed intake for animals adjusted to the same growth rate and weight base. Feed efficiency is one of the most economically important production traits. It particularly affects profitability of feedlots, but is also significant for grazing enterprises. For three years now we have been taking blood samples of our herd for the purpose of testing Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) which is moderately heritable (0.4) and correlated to NFI. A negative value here is better $inDEX VaLUES $Index values were developed to make it easier to determine which animals are more suited to particular markets. Breedobject creates these indices, where it places relative emphasis on particular traits suited to each particular market. In this catalogue we have listed the new $Index Values that were introduced in December 2008 which replace the previous four $Index Values. The new $indexes are: aus. Long Fed / CaaB index: Estimate the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example high fertility self replacing commercial Angus herd
in temperate Australia targeting pasture grown steers with a 270 day feedlot finishing period for the high marbled Japanese export market. Steers are assumed marketed at 740 kg live weight (420 kg HSCW and 25 mm P8 fat depth) at 26 months of age. Significant emphasis is placed on marbling and 600 Day Growth. aus. Heavy grass Fed Steer index: Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example self replacing commercial Angus herd in temperate Australia that sells heavy grass fed steers for markets like the EU and light grass fed Jap Ox. Steers are assumed marketed at 600 kgs live weight (330 kg HSCW and 15 mm P8 fat depth) at 22 months of age. Emphasis is placed in Growth and Carcase Yield while maintaining Fertility and Marbling. aus. Short Fed Domestic index: Estimates the genetic differences between animals innet profitability per cow joined for an example high fertility self replacing commercial Angus herd selling feeder steers and heifers for the short fed domestic feedlot trade. Steers are assumed marketed at 445 kg live weight (245 kg HSCW and 10 mm P8 fat depth) at 15 months of age. Emphasis is placed on growth to 400 days and high carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. aus. Terminal index: Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability for an example commercial crossbred herd where no animals are kept for breeding. For example using Angus bulls over tropical cows targeting pasture grown steers and heifers with a 100 day feedlot finishing period. Progeny are assumed marketed at 600 kg live weight (325 kg HSCW and 17 mm P8 fat depth) at 23 months of age. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield with no weighting on calving ease, female fertility new Zealand Self Replacing index – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment) in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with all males, are slaughtered. Steers are assumed marketed at 525 kg live weight (280 kgs carcase weight) by 16 months of age. The Index is expected to favour production of a cow herd with excellent reproductive efficiency, rearing progeny with moderate to high growth rates and high yielding carcasses. new Zealand Ease of Calving index Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial dairy herd targeting the production of dairy beef progeny from dairy cows and heifers. Steers are assumed marketed at
520 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight) by 20 months of age. While calving ease is by far the most important profit driver in the Index, growth and to a lesser extent meat yield also contribute. This Index is also a reasonable indicator of a bulls’ suitability for use over heifers. angus Pure index – Estimated the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment) in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with males, are slaughtered. Steers are assumed marketed at 525 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight) by 16 months of age with a significant premium paid for marbling. This index is similar to Self Replacing Index bit will tend to highlight higher marbling sires. U.K. Terminal index (£’s) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting the EU market with no marbling requirement. All progeny are assumed to be marketed at around 550-580 kg live weight (280-320 kg carcase weight) at approximately 16 months of age. This index ranks bulls by their genetic potential for the production of prime steers and heifers for beef production. Consequently, growth and carcase EBV’s are the main drivers used in compiling this Index. Considerable emphasis is also placed on calving ease direct, which is an estimate of genetic difference between animals ability to calve without assistance. Calving ease is something that the Aberdeen-Angus breed is renowned for and hence the requirement for its positive weighting in this Index. U.K. Self Replacing index (£’s) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd selecting their own females as replacements while producing steers and excess heifers to target the EU market with no marbling requirement. All finished steers are assumed to be marketed at around 615 kg live weight (330 kg carcase weight) at approximately 18 months of age. The Angus Self Replacing index ranks bulls by their genetic potential for the production of female replacements while producing prime steers and excess heifers for beef production. It has emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.
us the value of the animal. For example, a bull with a long fed $Index value of $80 compared with another with $50, is expected to produce an extra $15 per cow joined (1/2 x (80 – 50)). Don’t forget that ½ is used because the dam provides the other half. If you are a commercial herd that targets the long fed market, select a sire with a higher $ value for that Index, the same goes for grass fed and so on. Trial Structural Trait EBVs The BeefClass Structural data was re-analysed following submission of further records scored by accredited assessors. At present, there are five traits analysed for over 9000 animals which were scored before they were 750 days of age. The number of traits analysed is likely to be expanded as further research is conducted on the structural scores available. The five traits analysed (and the flags associated with the EBV) are: Fa: Front Feet Angle (ST indicates steep angle, SH indicates shallow angle) FC: Front Feet Claw Set (OD indicates open divergent claws, SC indicates scissor claws) Ra: Rear Feet Angle (ST indicates steep angle, SH indicates shallow angle) RH: Rear leg Hind View (Bl indicates bow legged, CH indicates cow hocked) RS: Rear leg Side View (SR indicates straight rear legs, SI indicates sickle hocked) More positive EBVs indicate a higher genetic potential for the desirable form of the structural trait compared to the average for the analysis. The EBV flags only appear against animals that have more extreme, negative breeding values. The flags indicate the type of undesirable structural variation the animal tends to have. For example, a bull with a flag of ‘ST’ next to its FA EBV may produce about 35% or more progeny with steep feet angle; while a bull with a flag of ‘SH’ may produce 35% or more progeny with shallow feet angle. Therefore, using EBVs and flags in combination will assist breeders in making the right decision to improve the structural soundness of their herd. Sires with at least 40% accuracy for a Structural EBV are reported. Further information on Structural Scoring and the analysis of the structural traits can be obtained from the Angus Australia web site.
Different emphasis is placed on particular traits depending upon their relevance to the market. These indices are expressed in $ terms to show 17
BEEF CLASS ClASS STRUCTURAL STRUCTURAl ASSESSMENT ASSESSMENT SySTEM SYSTEM Structural problems in cattle have a substantial effect on both the reproductive and growth performance of a beef herd. It is widely recognized that structural problems in sires have detrimental effects on conception rates, calving patterns and thus profitability. By Jim green & liam cardile of BeeFXcel Similarly, females with inadequate structural characteristics are more prone to weaning lighter calves or conceiving later in the breeding season than their more functional counterparts. These structural problems are filtered through the supply chain resulting in reduced income for the producer, feedlot and thus reducing the overall productivity of the Australian Beef Industry.
Te Mania Angus is continually expanding their structural assessment program in order to optimise soundness and performance in their stock. The program involves an independent assessor from BEEFXCEL analysing the structural composition of the herd on an individual basis. The program used at Te Mania comprises of: • An annual assessment of all sale bulls;
• A score of 2 or 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked at cautiously and inspected very closely before purchasing;
The current trend for improving consistency and quality of product has shifted producers’ focus, towards selecting seedstock on carcass and growth genetic traits (EBV’s). Whilst, this selection has been, and will continue to be pivotal in developing the Australian beef industry, we must not forget the fundamentals of livestock breeding.
• An annual assessment of all breeding females and donor cows
• A score of 1 or 9 should not be catalogued and are considered immediate culls.
• All animals deemed inadequate are culled.
For more information please contact: Jim Green 0402 003 137 or Liam Cardile 0409 572 570 Or visit the BEEFXCEL web page.
The Beef Class Structural Assessment System was designed by the MLA, the BIA and several breed societies to address structural problems in the beef industry. Detailed analysis of three thousand animals in genetically linked herds indicated that structural characteristics such as leg and foot structure were moderately to highly heritable. BEEFXCEL now services many seedstock operations in their selection and grading of stock using the Beef Class Structural Assessment System.
An explanation of the Beef Class Structural Assessment System
• A score of 3 or 7 shows greater variation but would be acceptable in most commercial programs. However, seedstock producers should be vigilant and understand that this score indicates greater variation from ideal;
The Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1-9 scoring system for feet and leg structure; • A score of 5 is ideal; • A score of 4 or 6 shows slight variation from ideal, but this includes most sound animals. An animal scoring 4 or 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program; Jim Green
