Zoom In interactive content now available through Snapplify Snapplify given exclusive distribution rights to Oxford University Press South Africa innovative digital study series, Zoom In
An exclusive partnership between leading local educational publisher, Oxford University Press South Africa, and global edtech company, Snapplify, has made the publisher’s interactive content series, Zoom In, easily available to thousands of learners. Covering the major South African subjects for Grades 10 -12, in both English and Afrikaans, the Zoom In interactive products are designed to help learners tackle tough exam concepts, giving them the confidence to conquer all their exam questions. Interactive resources are integrated throughout, providing opportunities for self-assessment, as well as increased engagement, leading to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. For those signed up to Snapplify’s e-learning platform, Engage, free samples are downloadable, with all additional content available to check out via the digital library. The full series is also available to purchase by individual learners
(through Engage or Snapplify’s online store), or in bulk via a school-wide licence. ‘Snapplify is committed to improving access to quality digital educational content, so we’re especially pleased to be distributing the Zoom In series, which really takes digital study to the next level. Using a range of interactive features, such as simulations, animations, games and activities with immediate feedback, videos, and more, Zoom In truly provides learners with the opportunity to get to grips with key concepts in the curriculum,’ said Snapplify’s Operations Director, Mark Seabrook. The launch of the series comes at an exciting time, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that all public schools will adopt digital education over the next six years – a project in which Snapplify and other stakeholders have been actively involved. Email education@snapplify.com to chat about your specific needs and how we can work together.
Re-imagine Education Awards Wesley Lynch, Snapplify’s CEO, will be representing the pan-African educational company on Reimagine Education’s international panel of judges for next year’s prestigious award. Often referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the Education sector, the Reimagine Awards is a global competition for innovators in education. This honour follows Snapplify’s recent wins at the Reimagine Education Conference in San Francisco in November 2018, where the company took home the Reimagine Education Overall EdTech Award, as well as the category award for E-Learning. ‘It is a privilege to have been asked to be a judge for this distinguished award. As part of Snapplify’s commitment to innovation and collaboration in the edtech space, we are looking forward to giving back to the education industry through shared knowledge,’ said Lynch. In November 2018, Snapplify took first place at the South African semi-finals for the Global EdTech Startups Awards, securing a shot at the finals in London in early 2019. For a second time, Snapplify was also named one of London Stock Exchange Group’s ‘Companies to Inspire Africa’ in 2019. Snapplify’s work with partners to zero-rate hundreds of thousands of digital education ebooks in Africa, and the launch of Basic Engage – a free version of the Engage e-learning platform for students and teachers – have gone a long way to improving access to digital educational content and reducing barriers to entry in emerging markets.

d6 Group
We have asked the CEO, Willem Kitshoff to tell us more about the company and innovative solutions they have for schools.
“d6 group is all about creating
#effectiveschools ……. through better management and the use of technology. It currently serves more than 2 500 schools nationally, with its state-of-the-art school management system, d6+, as well as the wellknown d6 school communicator and d6 Connect.
When we think of schools, we tend to think only about the learning and sometimes forget the complexities around the management and assume it's a hygiene factor. Effective management is key to enable effective learning. Schools are complex businesses and all the parts need to work together. In our view, management of schools do not receive enough emphasis and attention to ensure and enable quality learning. Most effort and funding (including CSI funding) are more focused on solving the learning issues and not necessarily school management, which is the core. d6 group is much more than just a communicator to schools. It is a company that understands the education space, and with its d6+ software solutions, it assists schools to become even more effective. #morethanjustacommunicator
In light of the recent surge in cash-in-transit heists, d6 group has committed to find a solution through the utilisation of new innovations in the financial technology industry. As part of its ongoing mission to help schools become more efficient, d6 group has developed a solution that takes a blanket approach to the cash-on-premises problem by working on a school level to create secure cashless environments.
Willem Kitshoff – CEO d6 group
d6 group has partnered with Sticitt, a financial technology business, to embed a payment solution in the existing d6+ product offering, which various communities and schools already use to communicate with their respective members. This allows parents to make payments without having to download and get used to another application. d6+ also offers direct financial accounting integration to automate some of the administration involved in managing payment receipts. The d6+ Cashless solution already offers support for card processing, EFT and cash deposits at ATMs, and the d6 group is currently working on additional ways for people to make payments without requiring a smart device or Internet connectivity, such as our Scan-to-pay options. 2019 will also see the inclusion of on-campus payment options rounding off the d6+ Cashless offering to truly offer a full cashless solution. With the problem of using cash often affecting those who are least able to afford the current alternatives, d6 is dedicated to solving these challenges in a manner that suits everyone.”

Microsoft Problem Based Learning (PBL) Teachers Challenge The norm in daily school life, teachers are the instructors, facilitators, designers and assessors of the learning process. At the Microsoft Local Education Exchange (E2) event, held at Showcase School, Steyn City School, this norm was flipped. Teachers became the learners and were challenged with a real-life problem. In this ever changing, fast paced, often complex technological world, Problem Based Learning (PBL), enables learners to find joy in their learning and discover creative solutions to real life problems. There are several definitions of PBL but for the purpose of this narrative, PBL is defined as a constructivist pedagogical approach that organises curriculum and instruction around carefully crafted “ill-structured” problems as the focus for learner engagement. Unlike Project Based Learning, Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a continuous non-linear problem finding challenge. The PBL pedagogical approach drives learners to construct their own knowledge, and to do this, teachers do not provide any content prior to learners undertaking their own research. Therefore, the strong argument is that the effectiveness of PBL should be evaluated against the criteria it was developed against. Barrows and Kelson (1995)40 outline the competencies, skills and attitudes that PBL set out to help learners develop: ● ● ● ● ●
Flexible knowledge Effective problem-solving skills, Student directed learning skills, Effective collaboration skills, Intrinsic motivation.
Microsoft Training Partners, Computers4Kids http://computers4kids.co.za; Technology Training Academy (TTA) https://www.techtacademy.com and Qberty www.qberty.co.za provide STEAM solutions to promote 21st Century Skills and Problem Based Learning.
Microsoft in Education has developed a carefully structured Problem Based Learning course for teachers to unpack the benefits and explore the unique assessment opportunity in the learning environment. The PBL course is available on the Microsoft Educator Community (www.education.microsoft.com), accessed using an Office 365 or Microsoft account.
Microsoft Local E2 – Smart City Challenge facilitated by CRSP dsgn

Microsoft Authorised Education Partner, CRSP dsgn facilitated an exciting Smart City Challenge at the Microsoft Local E2, over a period of two days in September 2018. The event provided Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts the opportunity to develop their knowledge base in Robotics, Coding, as well as critical 21st Century skills. Skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity were infused into the PBL challenge.
Teachers were challenged to develop a Smart City that involved building the city of the future, which covered elements of Smart Communications; Smart Energy, Smart Mobility and Smart Infrastructure. A particularly exciting twist to the challenge was that each teacher was assigned a role that included current jobs such as Engineers, Programmers, Brand Managers and Journalists, as well as jobs that will increasingly be available in the future such as Vloggers and Social Media Marketers. The overall experience for the teachers was captured in their excitement to continue the path to support their learners in the development of competencies and skills that will place them in good stead for the Fourth Industrial Revolution! We are excited to host our MIE Experts for 2019-2020 and school leaders for the next Local E2, taking place on 25 and 26 September 2019. For more information on how you can get involved in this exciting event, reach out to Ronelle.

Does your car have an alarm and immobilizer, do you lock your car and house, and do you have a linked armed reaction unit to you alarm? For the majority of us the answer is YES!
We live in a security conscience society when it comes to most areas of our lives. We don’t, however, share the same drive for locks, alarms and reaction units when it comes to our cyber security. This entails unauthorised access to certain sites, unauthorised entry from unwanted visitors and the security of our data and the data of others we transact with.

Staffroom
A software solution equipping schools for the 4IR In 2019 advancements in technology are gaining momentum at an unprecedented rate. In fact, we are no longer moving towards the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, we are already there. The difference between the previous digital revolution, and where we are now, is that we no longer see the development of new technologies, but rather innovation of technology that has the capacity to complete tasks that were usually restricted to humans. Schools and the 4IR While schools need to prepare learners for this unpredictable future, they also have the opportunity to integrate the tools at hand to increase their existing teaching capacity. Staffroom Software can do just that for schools. Through making management easier in terms of administration and communication, Staffroom saves teachers time, allowing them to focus on the important job at hand – educating and preparing learners for their futures. Streamlining school management Staffroom is an integrated software suite that helps your school collect, store and share all relevant information pertaining to learners, parents and staff. The suite connects relevant stakeholders contributing to learner success, and allows them access to important information and insights about the learner. In turn they have the knowledge to respond suitably to a learner’s needs. Specifically designed for schools, this software suite provides easy-to-use, labour saving tools, helping school staff complete administrative tasks both faster and more precisely. Ensuring implementation and everyday use goes as smoothly as intended, Staffroom offers world class onboarding and support services. A central information point Staffroom creates a central point where data is collected and shared, forming channels for incoming and outgoing communication. These channels create networks that connect scholars, parents, principals, teachers and inspectors & government regulators. Besides collecting data, the software also helps with the interpretation of data – resulting in informed decisions and improved management. Staffroom is essentially a unique management system that adapts to suit each individual school’s unique needs. The proof is in the solution Wendy Horn, School Principal and teacher at Protea Heights Academy, as well as Global Teacher Prize Nominee of 2018 agrees that Staffroom makes a school easier to manage. She shares, “[Staffroom] adds to our brand in that we communicate with parents effectively. It allows educators to work smartly and saves time. The product allows easy and effective data analysis. It just makes the admin a little bit easier – which in turn means we can use our time more efficiently.”
