ASDAN Acknowledge our Outstanding Practice The Bullers Wood ASDAN team have just received an award for our good practice at CoPE moderation. Since gaining accreditation for the CoPE programme in 2006, a succession of girls have taken part in the programme, and gained CoPE Level 2, which is equivalent to a B at GCSE. The CoPE programme allows students to develop key skills through a range of different activities. The ASDAN team use their different skills to teach First Aid, Drama warmup, Jewellery making, gardening and a wide range of other interesting activities. Since 2006, every student entered for the qualification has achieved a Level 2, and we have been commended regularly for the standard of the work they have produced.
International Group Two of the members of The Friends Of Bullers Wood, Mrs Anne Levin and Mrs Eva Morgan would like to set up an International Group at Bullers Wood. The purpose of the group is to support parents who have moved to this country from abroad by swapping ideas and experiences and sharing diversity in a social context. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, 26th January at 11.00 in room T4 at Bullers Wood. If you would like to join us for coffee, cakes and a chat please let Mrs Lawless on Reception know (plawless@bullerswood.bromley.sch.uk). Please report to Reception and you will be directed to the meeting room.
PANTOMIME REVIEW
Weeks and weeks of living and breathing „Snow White‟ were all over in a deafening round of applause as the curtain cascaded down on the exhausted but beaming cast on Friday 16th December. Work began on the script in September. Casting was another challenge; Year 12 was overflowing with talent! After a few swaps here and there, the final cast coursed into rehearsals with zealous determination and exuberant energy, and so commenced the long and taxing rehearsal period of forgotten cues, wrong entrances and a lot of takes! The hard-work of the cast (including the staff), directors, and the ingenious technical team was unrivalled, and without their commitment, the pantomime would not have been the roaring success it was. Mr Leadon‟s devotion to the pantomime inspired us all to soldier. It all came together in the end- Snow White and Prince Harry got together, and they all lived happily ever after! Hearing the eruption of laughter was a very „moo-ving‟ moment (excuse the pun!) considering the, sometimes rocky, journey we had been on! I had watched the pantomime evolve from a cluster of words on a Microsoft Word Document, to a slurred blur of flustered last minute rehearsals and ultimately a rip-roaring success! Everyone who was involved should be very proud of themselves! Tessa Standen
The Festive Fun of the Christmas Concert
On Thursday 16th December, 2011, members of the Music Department put on a spectacular show for family and friends to see, just in time for the festive season. Quentin Blake
Going to listen to Quentin Blake was such an experience! I love the books of Roal Dahl, so meeting his illustrator was very exciting. Before arriving at the Royal Festival Hall, we walked from London Bridge to Waterloo looking at the attractions on the South bank and making notes for a website page we will make on the South Bank when we get back in school. It was a boiling hot day at the end of September, so the River Thames shone in the sun as we made our way to the Royal Festival Hall via The Golden Hinde, The Globe and Tate Modern. There were lots of actors marching along dressed in brightly coloured suits as “Smurfs”. They looked very strange! Quentin Blake came on to the stage to very loud cheering. We were lucky to be sitting right in the front! He told many stories about working with Roal Dahl and how he created characters such as “Matilda” and “The Twits”. He drew on a visualiser, so his illustrations were blown up on a large screen. His drawing was amazing! He advised us always to be proud of our efforts and never use a rubber! At the end of the presentation he stayed behind to sign the books we bought. I proudly showed mine to my family when we arrived home. It was my first school trip since joining Bullers Wood. It was a lovely day and I thoroughly enjoyed it. By Jade Oakley Year 7
Open House London
On Saturday 17th September, we were delighted to once again open our doors to the public for the third year running as part of Open House London. We welcomed a range of visitors from including former students, many with interesting tales to tell about their educational experiences from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Students once again showed around our visitors. Victorian-style refreshments were provided by our Catering students as well as a virtual tour of the site with a PowerPoint presentation in the Library, formerly the Drawing Room, given by Mrs van Teutem. Winnie Powell (Williamson) who came to the school in 1945 aged 13 years accompanied by her twin sister Pat. She remembers assemblies in the library and learning to ballroom dance in the library in the summer term. The school was then a secretarial college and she learned to touch type and shorthand.
The School Council meets each half term to discuss issues raised by the students plus other whole school topics. The representatives then report back to their year group in the year assembly the following week. The full minutes can be found on the students’ vle.
