A birthday is a celebration of the day when someone was born. Birthdays, in many cultures, are special occasions. In Australian society, the government requires people to register the birth of a new born baby within a set time. The development of the calendar has made the recording of dates of birth possible.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
When a birthday party is arranged, friends are invited and invitations are sent out. The importance of birthdays in Australia can be seen by the variety of birthday cards that are available in the shops.
A birthday party makes a person feel important. Birthdays are looked on as a time when a person can look back and think about what he / she has achieved. It is also a time to look forward and perhaps plan for the future.
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
When someone has a birthday, family and friends usually give cards and presents. The gifts are usually wrapped in brightly coloured wrapping paper. There is often a birthday cake which is decorated with icing and candles. After the candles are blown out, the birthday person makes a silent wish.

Questions
m . u
Did you know that the song, ‘Happy Birthday to You’, which many people in the world sing, was, at first, not a birthday song at all? This song was written by a school teacher as a religious song. The teacher’s students sang, ‘Good Morning to All’ every morning at the start of the day. This song was first sung as ‘Happy Birthday to You’ in about the 1930s. That’s a long time ago.

A party needs careful planning, well before the actual day. Where a party is held, depends on the weather and where you live. There is no point in choosing an outside venue if it is going to be cold or wet.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
The invitations should be sent out early so that the person who is organising the party, knows how many guests to expect. Each invitation should include the date, time and venue. At the bottom of the invitations there should be a RSVP. This is French for ‘respondez, s’il vous plaît’ which in English means, ‘please reply’. Replies help the organiser arrange suitable activities and provide sufficient food.

Parties are held to celebrate special occasions. A successful party is when the guests feel welcome and happy. When the guests arrive they should be welcomed and introduced to anyone who they don’t know. It is important that all guests feel comfortable, have a place to sit and no-one gets upset.
Today, you can hire entertainers who make parties extra special. Some people may choose to have a party based on a theme at home, while others may organise a visit to a special event.

and watch the show. Very efficient sound systems are set-up for concerts. If outdoor concerts involve performers changing their costumes, there must be suitable areas where they can change. Everyone works together at concerts so that everything goes smoothly. After a concert, some people are able to go back stage and meet the members of the performing group. If it was a band what would you say to the lead singer? How do you think the members of the group would feel after a performance? After a performance in any place there is always the cleaning up to do. If it is an outdoor show, the stage may have to be dismantled after the group has left. Then there are the grounds that have to be cleaned. This is where volunteers come and help.

es Costum ecial and Sp Outfits
Costumes and special outfits are worn at different times. Costumes are used for dressing up either when you go to a party, or for dancers, singers and other performers. A special outfit could be worn when you go to an important function. Throughout the years, costumes and special outfits have become popular. Many costumes have been influenced by different films that have been made. Costumes can be hired from specialist shops.

Today, costumes are fun and allow performers to interact with the crowd. In any concert or performance, costumes play a large part in holding the audience's attention. Some special costumes are made so that they appeal to children.
ew i ev Pr
Fashion designers play a large part in the making of costumes for any production. It is important that costumes fit the person who they are made for.
In some shows, like dancing and drama, the performers may need several costumes. These costumes are carefully cared for by the wardrobe mistress or wardrobe master. After each performance the costumes are checked and hung ready for the next performance. Masks are part of costumes. They are worn to conceal the face of somebody during a performance or for amusement. Masks can be made of different material. Sometimes a mask can be worn to a party to conceal the identity of the person. During the party, the masks are removed and the identities of people are revealed.

Read the text below about holidays then answer the questions.
s Holiday Sheet 1
Holidays are times when you don’t have to go to school or an adult doesn’t have to go to work. Vacation is another name for a holiday. One of the good things about holidays is that you can take your time doing things that you want to do. When holidays are mentioned, many people will think of activities that are planned for these days. Holiday camps for children are organised by trained adults. These camps provide young people with different experiences.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
There are different types of holidays. Some holidays are for the whole country. In Australia, the different states can have the same holiday on a different day.

ew i ev Pr
A public holiday is when most people have time off work and school. Christmas, New Year and Easter are special days when people usually take holidays. These specific days are on the same day in every Australian state. There are religious holidays and state holidays. ANZAC day is a very important national occasion because on this day, people remember all those men and women who have died at war. During public holidays, people may attend official functions, travel to see their family and friends, plan a barbecue at a park, or meet at someone’s house.
The school holidays are important for students. These holidays allow students to meet with their friends, visit relatives, go on a trip, go out to an event that has been planned for this time or just rest at home.

Australia Day is held on the 26th January. This marks the day that the first white colony was established in New South Wales. People from all over the world have made Australia their home. On Australia Day, many new immigrants become Australian citizens and attend a special ceremony and take an oath, where they promise to respect and be loyal to the Queen and obey the laws of the country. People of all ages can become Australian citizens.

New Year's Day is celebrated throughout the world. On New Year's Eve, people have parties and sing and dance. Just before midnight, people count down to the New Year and cheer and sing 'Auld Lang Syne'. This song means 'in memory of past times'. In many places, huge firework displays light the sky. On New Year's Day people make resolutions and this is when they promise to start or stop something. Halloween is another special day. It first started over 2,000 years ago in what is now known as Ireland. Halloween is celebrated in many countries but it is most popular in Canada and America. The Scottish and Irish settlers brought Halloween to these countries. Jack O’Lanterns are carved and there are parties, trick and treating and homes are decorated with pumpkins and corn stalks.
