The theme of Australian native animals provides a relevant and appropriate background to the work students are required to complete, even in a relief teaching situation.

Mathematics Sheets These are primarily problem solving, using the facts supplied in the information pages. However there is also some graph, measurement and arithmetic calculation work.

The activities in this book are ideal for use by relief or support teachers needing interesting and stimulating activities for their students.

Grid Drawing These visual perspective/ratio work sheets are designed to stimulate students with interesting and fun activities.

Cloze These sheets require students to supply three possible words to fill the gaps. A word has been provided that adds more interest to the exercise by providing ‘points’ to those who managed to choose the word as one of theirs. This emphasizes that, in most cases, one word may be as good as other possibilites.

These worksheets are designed to enhance teaching by seeking to focus lessons, challenge students, reinforce the lesson taught and to bring an element of enjoyment to the process of learning.

Prior to being given the worksheet, students should be prepared by discussion and by working through similar examples to ensure that they know and appreciate the tasks set by the worksheets.

These are similar to traditional word search activities but the words to be found are only partially given within a paragraph about an Australian native animal. When the students find all the words, there are letters left over which make up a mystery sentence.

Word Grid

The first letter or two of words that students have to enter into a grid arrangement are given in a paragraph. When students enter all the words a set of coordinates that refers to the grid gives them a mystery sentence to solve.

Section Quiz At the conclusion of each section is a quiz. Students should be told at the start of the section that there will be a quiz. They will then have to take care of the sheets until they are needed. Students can either be asked to learn the information prior to the quiz as homework, or they could be allowed to refer to the sheets during the quiz.

Two almost identical stories are presented to students who are required to read them carefully to find the ten differences. The stories are fictitious. This exercise is best done by getting students to work in pairs, with each one having a different version of the story. That way they need to cooperate and read together to find the differences.

Facts Maze Students work their way through a maze and pick up letters along the way. Underneath, students locate and copy some facts on particular native animals.

Arthropods: These are invertebrates (no backbone) with jointed legs. They make up about 75% of all animals on earth and are arguably the most successful animals on the planet. They have conquered land, sea and air and have a major role in maintaining ecosystems as pollinators, recyclers of nutrients, scavengers and as food for other animals. Over one million species are known but since many arthropod species remain undiscovered, especially in tropical rain forests, the true number is probably in the tens of millions. They include many animals we come across in our gardens, such as spiders, ants, centipedes and slaters. Arthropods are divided into four major groups: Insects; Myriapods (including centipedes and millipedes); Arachnids (including spiders, mites and scorpions); and Crustaceans (including slaters, prawns and crabs). Arthropods have been around for a long time – their ancestors originated in the oceans 530 million years ago, in a time known as the Cambrian period. Arthropods exist today because they

Funnel Web: This is a large, 7 cm, black, aggressive, ugly looking spider with massive fangs, which are large and powerful enough to easily penetrate a fingernail. When disturbed the spiders tend to rear up on their hind legs, a defensive posture that exposes their fangs. They don’t jump. Their venom is highly toxic and can kill a human in two hours. The venom of the male spider is five times as toxic as that of the female. For some strange reason toads, cats and rabbits are almost unaffected by the venom.

When people are bitten by a venomous animal they are treated with anti-venom, however it has to be specific to the creature that attacked them. Fortunately, the specific redback anti-venom is reliable. Around 250 people each year are treated for redback bites in Australia. Anti-venom is injected directly into the muscle because of the small volume involved.

Wallaroo: The wallaroo is also known by other names including: euro, eastern grey wallaroo, red wallaroo, roan wallaroo and hill kangaroo. They can be identified by their dark grey colour that is reddish on top and paler underneath the body. Measured from nose to tail tip, males can attain a length of almost 2 metres while females reach a length of 1·5 metres. Males can weigh up to 46·5 kg while females can reach 25 kg. The wallaroo grazes during the cool evening, primarily on grasses and shrubs.

Brushtail Possum: The common brushtail is a nocturnal animal and spends the day in a tree hollow, while in urban areas it favours roof cavities. It is an arboreal animal, climbing by means of its sharp claws and moderately prehensile tail. It eats a variety of leaves, particularly eucalypts. The dingo, carpet python, and lace monitor are known to prey on the common brushtail. Longevity is usually about 11 years. Over 90 per cent of females breed annually. A single young is born at a time. It spends 5 months in the pouch and a further 2 months suckling and riding on its mother’s back before weaning is complete. It can grow up to 550 mm in body and an extra 350 mm with its tail length. Females weigh as much as 3500 g and males 4500 g.

Red Kangaroo: This is the largest living marsupial. While the males have a reddish coat, the females are often more blue-grey in colour. The young, known as joeys, are born 33 days after mating and are only 2·5 centimetres long. Large kangaroos can reach a running speed of 64 kmh, with leaps as long as 8 metres and as high as 3 metres. Due to the unusual shape of their legs and the bulky tail, a kangaroo cannot walk backwards easily. It lives over most of the central part of Australia in areas where rainfall averages less than 500 millimetres. The animals prefer open plain habitats with neither trees nor bushes, but are seldom found in regions without shade from scattered trees.

Marsupials

46 cm long, with a tail the same length again. It weighs up to 1·5 kg. Its fur is brown to grey, with a paler belly. The prehensile (grasping) tail is hairless at the tip. Females are pregnant for about 4 months. After birth, the two tiny newborn animals crawl into the pouch, where they drink milk for about two months. After leaving the pouch, they continue to ride on their mother’s back until they mature.

Long-nosed Bandicoot: This animal is coloured a drab, greyish-brown on top and is creamy white below. Its pouch opens backwards. It is approximately 375 mm from tip to tail with a tail length of 135 mm. It weighs about 1100 g. Its natural home ranges from rainforest, through to wet and dry woodland, to areas with little ground cover. It also inhabits suburban areas where it digs holes in lawns in search of food. A longnosed bandicoot spends the day in a nest, usually a shallow hole on the surface of the ground, lined with grass and leaves. Females start to breed at about five months of age, before they are fully grown. Litters average three babies. The gestation period is only about eight days. The newborn young are about 13 mm long and weigh 0·25 g. The young grow hair when they are 40 days old, their eyes open at 47 days, and weaning occurs about 60 days after birth.

Tasmanian Devils: This is the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial. It is nocturnal. It has a thickset, squat build, with a relatively large, broad head and a short, thick tail. Its fur is mostly or wholly black, often with white markings. They can weigh up to 12 kg and stand about 30 cm high at the shoulder. Devils once lived on mainland Australia, however now they are only found in Tasmania. It is believed the devil became extinct on the mainland some 600 years ago because it couldn’t compete with the dingo. The devil is mainly a scavenger and feeds on whatever is available. Powerful jaws and teeth enable it to completely devour its prey – bones, fur and all. Longevity is up to eight years. Gestation is 21 days. The young are carried in the pouch for four months.

Birds

Rainbow Lorikeet: is a breed of small, brightly coloured Australian parrot with a brush-tipped tongue. It chatters while eating. It feeds in flocks of about 20 parrots, but roosts in flocks of thousands. Mating pairs stay together for life. It has a life span of about 20 years. It is up to about 35 cm long and weighs about 33 g. They have red, green, blue, yellow and orange feathers and a red, curved bill. There are 3 white eggs in a clutch that females incubate for 26 days, while the male feeds her.

Emu: its name comes from the Portuguese word ‘ema’, which means ‘large bird’. Standing up to 2 m tall, adult male emus are Australia’s largest birds. Only ostriches are larger. They can run at 50 km per hour and a stride can measure up to 3 m. It thrives in remote places like the dry plains of Australia’s centre, the tropical woodlands to the north, and the cold snowfields of the high country. It eats a wide variety of leaves, grasses, fruits, native plants, and insects. To escape predators, it will run in a zigzag pattern. However, at close quarters their main defence is a swift kick or two with their powerful legs.

Little Penguin: is a breed of flightless seabird. It is the smallest of all penguins at about 35 cm in height, and one kilogram when fully grown. It mainly feeds in shallow waters within 20 kilometres off the coast. It lives for an average of seven years. Both males and females incubate eggs for 35 days. Upon hatching, the penguin chicks are very weak and cannot raise their heads. Their eyes open at one week of age. Chicks, called fledgings, leave the nest to go to sea at nine weeks of age.

Thylacine: known as the Tasmanian tiger, it was the largest marsupial predator to have survived into historic times. It was last officially seen on the night of 7 September, 1936 when the last known one died. It was wolf-like in shape with males reaching around 35 kg and 1·5 m long. They hunted wallabies and other prey by scent, eventually running them to exhaustion or into ambush. Thylacines were hunted into extinction. A bounty was paid on their scalps. The species was finally protected by law in Tasmania in 1936, but that was too late. Scientists have managed to replicate bits of thylacine DNA taken from a specimen preserved in alcohol since 1866. This is a very small step in a very long and difficult process to clone the animal and bring the species back to life.

become extinct as recently as 15,000 years ago. It has the distinction of being the largest marsupial ever. It was the size of a rhinoceros – 3 m long, 2 m high at the shoulder, and weighing as much as two tonnes. The Diprotodon optatum was quite widespread throughout inland Australia but the last Ice Age brought increasingly dry conditions inland, and this may have caused its extinction. Zygomaturus tasmanicus, which was a close relative of diprotodon, was somewhat smaller at about 2·5 m long and about 1 m high at the shoulder, with a weight of 500 kg.

White Gallinule: was a stately bird species with a solid, red beak and yellowish-red legs. It lived on Lord Howe Island, an area of 1455 hectares. Today the white gallinule is sunk in mystery. Just two skins survive and so little is known about it that it is impossible to determine exactly when it became extinct. It is not known if it was still around in 1834, when the island was first settled, but it was certainly extinct by 1844. It is certain, however, that the cause was outright slaughter.
