Teachers’ Notes The Essential Phonics series is designed for use with students working at middle primary levels and for older children that struggle with spelling and reading basics. The activities are designed to help children identify and distinguish the many combinations of vowel sounds (graphs, digraphs and trigraphs) that make up the English language. It contains a range of concrete worksheets and review sheets that will aid children in their spelling and reading. This book can be used on its own or in conjunction with other existing phonic programs.

Fitted into your daily or weekly literacy program; Used to help children who are struggling with spelling or reading; As revision work sheets; In conjunction with a language program (e.g. THRASS) or other phonic programs; • Homeschooling; • Tutoring.

How you choose to use the book will vary depending on the child or students you are working with. There is no set order that needs to be followed. You may choose to work through this book from the beginning to the end in the alphabetical phonic order as it is set out, or select specific sounds groups that the children are experiencing difficulty with.

Whichever way you choose to use the activities, the book will prove to be an asset not only to you, but to the students completing the sheets.

If the book is used for children who are clearly experiencing learning difficulties with their spelling and reading, it is recommended that you try working through the sheets using the direct teaching method as outlined on page 5.

Direct Teaching 1. Establish the sound that is made by the phonemes in the group you are working with, i.e.

“ar ” as in chart

2. Before commencing the sheet, you may like to conduct a word brainstorm on the board. Students think of as many words as they can that contain the sound you are studying. 3. SHEET - Ask student/s to circle the sound in the box at the top of the sheet you are working though.

4. Read each word and ask student/s to repeat each word after you. mistakes straight away. )

5. Students then circle the sound they are working on in that word and put a tick in the box after the word, to show they have said the word correctly. 6. Children are then asked to print the word. 7. Put in the missing phoneme sound. 8. Write the sounds in each word.

9. It is important that students work across the line, completing each step before moving on to the next word.

10. When these steps have been completed, work through the rest of the sheet using this method. • Say each new word, asking student/s to repeat. Remember, to correct any mistakes immediately. • Circle the phoneme sound in each new word.

11. Correct each section as you go along, calling on different students to read their answer or parts of the worksheet. 12. When a set of phoneme sheets are completed, the children can then complete the review sheet that accompanies each of the phoneme groups.

Some Review Sheets can be worked on without too much assistance, but others will need the direct teaching method to be used. Ready-Ed Publications

It was Mike’s 11th birthday. He had woken up early and ran straight downstairs to the kitchen. Dad was busy making scrambled eggs for Mike. He knew that they were his favourite. Dad smiled and wished Mike a happy birthday.

While Olivia was eating her breakfast, Mum came in with the mail. One of the letters was addressed to Olivia. She opened it to find an invitation to a fancy dress party from her friend Mike. Olivia was so excited. She had never been to a fancy dress party. “What would she wear?” Mum reminded her about the large chest that was in the shed. It might contain something to help with her costume. The chest was very old and might have lots of interesting things in it. Gulping down the last of her cereal, she ran out the door and down the back steps to the shed. Unhooking the latch, she carefully entered and saw that the shed was full of all sorts of stuff. Back out in the noisy street, Mike packed the books in his bag. The light was starting to fade. He hopped onto his bike and started to ride home. As he peddled he could feel small drops of rain hitting his face. He began to pedal faster. By the time he reached home, the sky had grown dimmer and the rain was getting heavier. He quickly put his bike in the garage and ran inside inside. The first place Mike headed for was the warm fire fire. He stood there drying off and warming himself up before he started his project.
