Theme Packs for Lower Primary - Set 3 Foreword Written by Helen Hall Illustrated by Roseanne Humphreys This series of books has been published for use in lower primary Years and is based on a series of themes that students of this age level have shown empathy with. The books present a range of activities that can be integrated into the teaching program as a complete theme or as individual activities. Activities cover the language, mathematics, creative and problem-solving aspects of the school program. To supplement the activities a further selection of ideas is provided to develop the theme and to allow for integration into the class program. The author has written the activities to be used mainly in the first and second years of a student's schooling; however, they can also be applied as high-interest remedial activities for other Year levels. Ideas to develop the Dinosaur theme Language/Science Brainstorm: Facts and ideas about dinosaurs. Write words on shaped cards. Organise facts under headings suitable for writing a report. Excursion:
Visit the museum or local science centre to view dinosaur displays. Write a recount of your visit.
Art/Crafts Crayon-resist pictures: 3-D modelling: With plasticine. Sewing: Around a dinosaur shape. Dinosaur Frieze: Children draw and cut out their own dinosaurs . Paint the background on a long strip of paper. Glue dinosaurs to the background. Paper sculptures: Draw large dinosaurs then cut out and trace onto another sheet of paper. Colour backs and fronts then staple the edges together leaving a small opening. Stuff the dinosaur with bits of torn paper then staple the opening. Mathematics: Sorting and Classifying: Use small plastic dinosaur figures and sort them into a variety of groups. Let the children decide the attributes for sorting; for example colour, size, types, special features, e.g. spikes, long neck, walks on two feet . Draw a large dinosaur footprint. Dinosaurs Dinosaur is the name given to a kind of reptile that lived millions of years ago. Dinosaurs lived in the earth's tropical areas. The word 'dinosaur' means 'terrible lizard'. Dinosaurs were the largest animals to live on the earth. Some of the biggest dinosaurs were the Diplodocus, the Apatosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex. They were usually heavy, slow movers. Not all dinosaurs were huge. Compsognathus, the smallest dinosaur, was only as big as a chicken and could move ©quickly. R. I . C.Publ i cat i ons

Others were meat eaters and were called 'carnivores'. Scientists who study dinosaurs are called palaeontologists. They are able to learn about these huge creatures by studying fossils. Fossils are the remains of animals or plants found in the rocks of the earth.
Scientists don't know why the dinosaurs died. Some believe they died when a meteorite hit the Earth. Others believe the climate of the Earth became too cold and they died.
