LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2017–18 HANDBOOK
ABOUT TEACH FOR AUSTRALIA In Australia, the postcode that you’re born in can radically impact your whole future. Teach For Australia is part of a global movement dedicated to breaking the cycle of disadvantage through teaching and leadership in education. Just like the problem that we seek to address, our work is complex. In short, we do two things: •
The first is to recruit and develop some of Australia’s most talented graduates, young professionals and career-changers to teach in schools serving low socioeconomic communities and deliver improvements in student and school outcomes.
•
The second is to create a pipeline of leaders to drive change and innovation in education over the longterm, within schools and the broader education system.
Through our award-winning Leadership Development Program, Associates commit two years to complete: •
leadership development activities delivered by Teach For Australia;
•
a Master of Teaching (Secondary) delivered by Deakin University; and
•
a school placement at a Teach For Australia partner school with full salary and benefits.
Teach For Australia seeks to ensure that students taught by Associates: •
achieve significant academic growth in outcomes;
•
experience increased access to opportunities;
•
develop positive attitudes and beliefs about themselves and learning; and
•
develop aspirations, interests and excitement that propels them forward.
Our vision is of an Australia where all children, regardless of background, attain an excellent education.

OUR PROGRAM WE EMPOWER TALENTED PEOPLE TO BECOME GREAT TEACHERS AND LEAD OTHERS TO ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. Teach For Australia’s award-winning Leadership Development Program develops highly effective teachers and leaders, building their knowledge, skills and mindsets to ensure that they have a positive impact on students and schools and make a lifelong commitment to breaking the cycle of disadvantage.
Teach For Australia and Deakin University support Associates to accelerate their successful demonstration of the Standards, encouraging all Associates to reach Graduate level by the end of their first year of teaching and Proficient level by the end of their second year.
Teaching is the core of our Leadership Development Program. We see teaching as leadership.
In contrast, other initial teacher education programs seek to ensure that their graduates (of two-to-four-year programs) reach Graduate level on entering the teaching profession, following which they need to achieve Proficient level within two-to-three years to continue teaching.
Over the course of two years, Teach For Australia supports Associates through ongoing practical skills development and reflective coaching. A set of research-embedded teaching and leadership principles and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers serve as the foundation of the Leadership Development Program.
A critical component of the Leadership Development Program is our university partnership model. Teach For Australia has partnered with Deakin University, which delivers the Master of Teaching (Secondary), providing Associates with a nationally recognised teaching qualification. The Deakin University Master of Teaching (Secondary) is designed for concurrent teaching in diverse educational contexts.
As an employment-based pathway, the Leadership Development Program offers accelerated entry into the teaching profession. Teach For Australia partners exclusively with secondary schools serving low socioeconomic communities, providing Associates with a two-year school placement. Our approach allows Associates to immediately integrate the knowledge, skills and mindsets developed through the Leadership Development Program to the context of their own classrooms, working in close collaboration with their fellow teachers, school leaders and community. Teach For Australia exists to serve students, schools and communities. Only together can we help change outcomes and opportunities available to the next generation.

LEADERSHIP OUTCOMES TEACHING AND LEARNING
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
Through our Leadership Development Program, we develop teachers and leaders who:
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) awarded by Deakin University is accredited as an initial teacher education program by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
•
•
•
•
prepare purposefully: use their knowledge of content and students to set outcomes, design coherent instruction and develop effective assessments; engage others: use influence to create a respectful culture for learning in their classrooms and demonstrate unconditional positive regard, empathy and interpersonal skills to engage students in learning; implement effectively: engage students in learning and effectively implement questioning and assessments throughout instruction; engage professionally: participate fully in the professional community by reflecting on teaching, working with colleagues, maintaining records and communicating with families;
•
understand self: develop their self-awareness, emotional self-control and cultural literacy, are adaptable, achievement-oriented and use vision to mobilise others; and
•
understand change: use adaptive leadership and understanding of mindsets to influence change.
Upon completion of the Leadership Development Program, Associates: •
are awarded a Master of Teaching (Secondary) by Deakin University; and
•
demonstrate the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at Proficient level.
Additionally, the qualification has been assessed by a national accreditation committee (convened by the VIT) as meeting the standards required for national accreditation. As such, the Master of Teaching (Secondary) is recognised as an approved program of initial teacher education by the teacher regulatory authority in each Australian state and territory. During the program, Associates are employed as full-time entrylevel teachers on two-year fixed-term contracts by the relevant government department or directorate or school in accordance with their school placement.
The Australian Government Department of Education and Training is a major supporter of the Teach For Australia initiative.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES The Leadership Development Program is a formative experience that ingrains in Associates a lifetime commitment to addressing educational disadvantage. Teach For Australia Alumni drive change and innovation in education: •
within the classroom: at all education levels in primary and secondary schools;
•
within schools: as lead teachers, assistant principals and principals; and
•
beyond the classroom: as government and political leaders who drive systemic policy change and local community leaders and social entrepreneurs who disrupt the system.
Associates join the national Teach For Australia Alumni network and global Teach For All network of approximately 40 partner organisations that work to expand educational opportunity in their own countries with models similar to Teach For Australia.

TEACHING AND LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES The Leadership Development Program is underpinned by a set of research-based principles, which provide the foundation for Associates’ teaching and leadership practice. •
Vision: essential to achieving change. Associates develop visions that are based on values and strengths, which continually evolve as they develop greater understanding of their students, school and community.
•
Unconditional positive regard: the belief that every student has value and should be treated with warm acceptance. Even when students resist learning, it is the responsibility of Associates to care for students and their needs.
•
•
Relationship building capacity: success hinges on the capacity to build strong and authentic relationships. Associates build their emotional and social intelligence as well as concrete strategies to engage effectively with students, colleagues and the community, ensuring that their efforts are inclusive and collaborative. High expectations: the belief that students are capable of achieving better learning outcomes than previous outcomes would suggest. Research suggests that high or low expectations directly link students’ academic growth. Associates develop the mindset and strategies to ensure that all students are challenged to exceed expectations.
•
Understanding by design: an approach to planning that starts with an end goal and works backwards. Associates identify learning intentions, determine how students will demonstrate their understanding and design activities that lead students to the desired results.
•
Growth mindset: the belief in one’s own ability to achieve through hard work. Associates provide ongoing and explicit feedback that promotes growth mindsets, encouraging students to embrace challenges and see mistakes as learning experiences.
•
Rigour: Associates push students to learn through effective questioning, formative assessment, high quality feedback and engaging students in rich learning experiences.
•
Diversity and identity: to ensure that all students succeed, Associates address cultural differences and diverse learning needs using a range of research-based frameworks.
•
Data and goals: academic growth and positive attitudes visible through evidence. Associates track student learning through data and use it to inform planning and accelerate progress.
•
Adaptive leadership: mobilising people to develop complex solutions to difficult challenges. Associates work with their Teaching and Leadership Advisers to apply this approach within their school communities.
•
Collective impact: confronting educational disadvantage. Associates work alongside thousands of others within the education sector and beyond to create change that is larger than the individual.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The final stage of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) offers Associates the opportunity to choose one of the following specialisation pathways: Leadership, Inclusive Education, Languages Teaching, Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages, Internationalisation or Research (may lead to a PhD pathway).
Leadership development activities are delivered by Teach For Australia. Teach For Australia delivers executive education-style intensive programs, online learning, bespoke professional development sessions and ongoing peer and expert coaching and feedback.
SCHOOL PLACEMENT
Leadership development activities are designed to build the knowledge, skills and mindsets underpinned by the teaching and leadership principles. Leadership development activities also complement the Master of Teaching (Secondary) coursework and accelerate Associates’ progression against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The design and delivery of leadership development activities are responsive to the needs of Associates, government requirements and information as it updates on best practice in education. Throughout the program, there is increasing choice at each intensive program and Associates are able to shape their learning to meet their individual strengths, challenges and context.
MASTER OF TEACHING (SECONDARY) The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is delivered by Deakin University.
Associates undertake full-time employment as an entry level teacher at a Teach For Australia partner school. Teach For Australia partner schools vary in their size, age, location, resource availability and ethnic diversity. Associates are matched according to the unique needs of each school’s profile, curriculum, subjects and culture. All Associates fill a specific vacancy that exists within a school, for a teacher in a particular subject area or combination of subject areas. Associates are not surplus teachers in schools. Teach For Australia endeavours to place Associates in clusters within the same school and schools nearby one another to increase the opportunity for impact within the community. Partner schools provide Associates with 20 per cent time release to study towards the completion of their Master of Teaching (Secondary) as well as timetable flexibility for School Learning Mentors to support Associates.
Alongside core education studies, Associates complete two Secondary Curriculum Studies from English, Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages, Languages other than English, Drama, Dance, Media, Visual Arts, Music, Humanities, Business and Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Health, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Science and Environmental Science.

They observe Associates’ teaching and leadership practices, providing feedback multiple times per month as well as pastoral care to ensure that Associates maintain their wellbeing.
