Introduction Hello and welcome to my E book. Just like you, I am a teacher of English as a foreign language. More than 20 years ago I came to Italy. I transferred to Genoa not for work but for love! I met my Italian man in a sailing boat around the Greek islands. I left my family, home and job in London, for an adventure that has lasted a lifetime. Twenty years ago in Genoa nobody could speak English. In the area where I was living, near Brignole Station in Piazza Alimonda, it was the Genovese dialect that I heard in the shops and bars. So how did I start teaching English when at that time I was a fitness instructor and sports massage therapist?! My Italian man introduced me to the headmaster of a secondary school whose students were studying tourism. He was interested in the idea of using a mother tongue English woman (me!) to teach English conversation to them. I needed work. I said “Yes. I will never forget the first time i entered the classroom. I was more terrified that the kids. Twenty five eighteen year olds. I was thirty four and felt younger than them! They were excited, emotional and very agitated. I wanted to be interesting and fun. I wanted to connect to them. I wanted them to like me.

Before coming to Italy I was indeed a teacher, but a teacher of aerobics and fitness in the gym. I was a Jane Fonda girl. It’s true: I was very often teaching my aerobics classes to groups of 30 to 50 participants on a stage with a mike. On that stage I was energetic, motivating and fun. I was an entertainer. Now I had twenty-five eighteen year olds standing in front of me, eyes fixed on me full of expectancy, individual needs and diverse reasons for being there. So what did I do. I got them doing aerobics! They were already on their feet. They were full of energy. And it was the way I knew how to warm up the body and the mind , to fill the blood with oxygen to improve concentration and the efficiency of both muscles, joints and the heart and to prepare for the work ahead. And what fun we had! What a success it was! Eighteen year olds seem so big and adult like and rather frightening but fundamentally they are still children with little experience and so much to develop. With this aerobic activity, movement with actions and commands, listening and repeating, I was able to understand their level of comprehension and ability to respond to English. I was able to evaluate their knowledge of my language without them even knowing it. I was able to create an enjoyable environment full of energy, interest and involvement. My challenge then was of course to maintain the level of motivation in the lessons that followed. In those days there was no internet, no interactive white boards and no You Tube! Nothing was at the touch of a button back then. I had to use my own resources: my creativity and imagination, my empathy and personality and my bag of Mary Poppins truss which has grown in size over the years and which is filled with ideas that I carry with me to every lesson even now. My style of teaching English as a foreign language has developed and evolved over twenty years of working in public and private comprehensive elementary and secondary schools in Italy. I have

been organising and teaching English along side Italian teachers in their classrooms. I have been teaching extra scholastic English courses, after school English activities, Exam preparation and CLIL and I have also been running teacher training courses for Italian primary school teachers to help them improve their method in the English learning classroom.

Having my son at the age of forty, changed my life and was i am sure the most influencing factor in my career as a teacher. But the magnificent thing about teaching in schools is that every new scholastic year gives us the opportunity to start afresh. We can change. we can incorporate new methods and ideas and try out I want to now explain to you my method which I have created through my journey of hard work and constant learning from mistakes made and successes achieved, constantly correcting and improving along my way. It is a method that works. I know because I have used it! You will see that my method is a valid one and it will simplify your life. I will give you lots of ideas, materials, songs, games, videos links to useful web sites that I use regularly and that only a mother tongue English speaking teacher could know. My 5 step method will help you to improve your technique and provide you with a structure for your class that works.

I will teach you how to teach memorable, efficient English classes that engage, involve and enthuse your pupils.

Mrs Pritchard’s 5 Step Formula for Super English EFL lessons with primary school kids Do you teach English to children? Do you have a routine? When you teach to children, especially the little ones, it is fundamental to have a routine with which you been and develop each of your lessons.

With a routine your children know hat to expect. They will then feel at ease and comfortable. With a standard routine the children obtain confidence in themselves, their self-esteem increases and their insecurities diminish.

If you divide your lessons into five parts and always follow the same method at every lesson your structure will be clear not only to you but also to your pupils.

Having a clear structure that is repeated at every lesson will make your pupils feel more safe and secure and ready to learn. Even if you change the theme and consequently the activities , the children will still be concentrated and willing.

This book will oer you plenty of varied games and activities for each step that you can adapt to any theme and any age from 6 to10.
