JAN 2018 Bulletins TUF at School Information Inspire Communities
Walk with me On 27th November, the student mentors and mentees from "Walk with me" got a precious chance to visit the “My Cup Noodles Factory”. During the visit, they created their own completely original cup noodles package. Students could select their favorite soup among four varieties and four toppings from among 12 condiments for their own personalized cup of noodles. The students really enjoyed the visit as they could get away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom and offered them an opportunity to spend time with each other. They also gained more insight into the food industry as well.
Day:
Have you ever wondered how TUF’s approach can better support students’ needs? On 9th December, Program Mentors had the opportunity to promote TUF’s work at the information day of our partner school, Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School (TCGSS) through lesson demo and board display. TUF mentors students. The lesson showcased the strength of TUF's English Mentoring Program: a student-centred and interactive learning approach. It was filled with laughter and fun! Participants showed great enthusiasm for learning English in class. Thank you TCGSS for making this happen. Let’s inspire the community to support quality education for socially disadvantaged students!

Mickey Wong Christmas Board Game Fun Day Board games are always a lively and casual way to motivate students to learn English. Therefore on 19th December, we prepared several board games and fun facts about Christmas to play with students in TWGHs Kwok Yat Wai College. Students were excited when they were playing ‘Pictureka’, a searching specific target card game. While playing the game they acquired new vocabulary words as they had to know what they needed to search for. Students were also invited to write down their Christmas wishes on the board. We were glad to see students leave with smiles.
Hi, all! I am Mickey, a year 1 Program Mentor at TWGHs Yau Tze Tin Memorial College. I graduated from the University of Hong Kong, majoring in counseling and statistics. I am grateful for the education I received from my majors. From my counseling major, I learnt to understand students; from statistics, I learnt to test on the usefulness of different ways to help students. These skills help me to improve my teaching methods. I feel satisfaction in educating youngsters whose potential has not been developed. This is a chance for me to give back to society.
Virpal Kaur Hello, I am Virpal, a year 1 Program Mentor working in TWGHs Yau Tze Tin Memorial College. I graduated from the University of Hong Kong majoring in Accounting.
Students were playing Party Guess and Jenga
I believe school plays an important role in our lives and each student deserves to make the best of the experience. When I joined TUF, I wrote these words “Be fearless and discover students’ stories and grow with them, be of help when needed”. As a Program Mentor, I hope to walk and grow with the students in the journey of discovering themselves, overcoming their inhibitions and becoming better versions of themselves.

Student Story
“On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you about English?” I asked K. K said, “3.’” “Only 3?”, I repeated. The first time I noticed K was when she slept during English lessons. “I don‘t like English.” “Why?” “It’s really difficult.” With encouragement she joined my lunchtime small group support and consistently attended. Before exams, I asked K if she needed help revising for the exam. Surprisingly, she nodded. On that day, she paid so much attention. Even when I asked if she was tired, she shook her head and said she wanted to get higher marks. ‘Now, on a scale of 1-10, how confident are you about English?’ ‘3.’ ‘Only 3?’ ‘It was 0.’

“Hey good, you almost have it, but you can say it better. Try again! “ My former mentee, Mr. Chiu, asked me to help him practice English. Working in a Mong Kok restaurant he often encounters foreigners looking for the lavatory and he felt uneasy responding in English. While he was working hard to memorize and perfect his pronunciation, I felt proud. This kid who used to be unmotivated and sleepy through English lessons was now realizing the importance of English as a practical tool. I just hope that the visitors were not asking for a glass of water. By Tim Yip

Operation Desk TUF is very fortunate to have built meaningful relationships with schools, companies and other NGOs. You can see events highlighted in each newsletter. Last year, we participated in a board game competition organized by Gameplan along with the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong. These partnerships allow others to understand what we do and to see first-hand the impact on our students. Credit Suisse x TCGSS – Girls Go Tech Did you know Countess Ada Lovelace wrote the world’s first computer program in the 1840s?
English Explorer: Door to the World – TUF x Rockhampton Management Limited Following the successful program with Rockhampton Management Limited during the last school year, 13 students from F.2 to F.4 in HKTA The Yuen Yuen Institute No.1 Secondary School have been selected as the English Explorers this year! The English Explorers and the colleagues of Rockhampton Management Ltd discussed different customs and fun facts about Taiwan and the United Kingdom. During the second meeting, we could see the Explorers were improving! They were not as nervous and spoke more confidently. They experienced so many new things including a nice cup of Taiwan bubble tea! All of us are looking forward to the next session.
Though the modern-day computer did not yet exist, what Lovelace did is considered programming. Fast forward to 3rd November, where 28 girls from Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School had a taster of computer programming with Credit Suisse volunteers during the Girls Go Tech event. The girls had a lot of fun experimenting and playing with Micro:bit devices. They also had the chance to interact with working adults in the corporate world. Many participants expressed that it was a new and exciting experience for them! Thank you, Credit Suisse, for making this happen!
Training Support to Program Mentors TUF Training and Development activities aim to support Program Mentors in applying leadership practices and developing effective mentoring strategies for students. Through building purposeful, non-judgemental and trusting relationships, Mentors are able to customize support to students and encourage behavioural changes such as putting more effort into schoolwork and speaking up to learn. These changes are reinforced through positive role modelling and helping students to achieve longer-term personal growth and goals. The mentorship framework is strengthened through the continual reflective process in various training by our coaches and practitioners. Our successful student stories show the benefits of a dynamic and personalized mentorship.
