Detailing Volume (Part Two) This week’s activity saw our constructing environments group return to the Oval Pavilion construction site that we had visited earlier in the semester to inspect its progress and to gain more knowledge on structural systems and materials.

The image above was taken from the south side of the oval, facing north of the site. The image exemplifies the Falsework and in-situ concrete system in place, where the Falsework holds the concrete in the desired place and position until it’s desired to be removed, as explained by the site guide, Henry. The image also shows the three main structural materials used in construction, concrete, timber and steel framing. The image to the bottom left is a great example of the false work concrete in its different stages. We can also better see the concrete block masonry on the left of the Falsework, which exemplifies the multiple ways concrete, can be handled in a single site. The trench mesh at the bottom of the image hasn’t progressed much at all since the first visit to the site. One can assume though this will be a point to drain water to a desired outlet. This site visit has really solidified knowledge gained throughout the whole semester on structural systems as well as providing a case study we can see this all occurring over time.

image above from the east side of the Pavilion really illustrates the lateral bracing in the structure. Rigid timber horizontal planes in collaboration with steel cross bracing ensure the building will remain strong against lateral forces. The steel concrete supported in the concrete slab is more evident as well as the use of I beams throughout the roof structure. Box gutter become more evident from the buildings east profile. A mechanical service yard exists in the north east of the Pavilion as explained by Henry.
