Sneffels, Handies, Red Cloud and Uncompahgre Peaks, all topping out above 14,000 feet. Volcanic activity filled the southwest region of our state before humans were ever here. The volcanoes filled the area with gold, silver, zinc and many other precious metals. In the late 1800’s miners came west to seek their fortunes and conflict with the Ute Indians became a real issue. Agreements with the Utes to give up much of this mineral rich land finally enabled the miners to access these treasures. At that point many little towns evolved but only those with rail access were successful communities. Those settlements unable to be serviced by rail are the ghost towns you will view along the way, many of them having been destroyed by floods, harsh winters, or the easily mined gold and silver played out. The majority of the land along The Alpine Loop is managed by the BLM or National Forest Service, but many of the old mining claims are in private hands. Large scale, hard-rock mining has become less economical and so back country development - particularly the construction of second homes and mountain cabins - has replaced mining as the preferred use of this unique mountain property. The development of these in-holdings threatens the very qualities that have led to national recognition of The Alpine Loop. A move is underway to protect this beautiful area and yet private landowners, sportsman and outdoor lovers alike will still be able to enjoy the area. Lake San Cristobal - Colorado’s Most Beautiful Lake This beautiful natural lake, Colorado’s second largest, was formed over 800 years ago when a tremendous land slide came down from a high mountain and blocked the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. This major slide is known as the “Slumgullion Slide” and is still moving at a slow rate from the top of the mountain. Trees can be seen at strange angles where the slide is slowly moving down the mountain. Geologists tell us the slide will offer no danger for about 300 years and even at that will take an additional 300 years before it would cause any danger down below. This beautiful body of water holds many varieties of cold water fish as well as unbelievable amounts of other wildlife. From 8 inch stocked rainbows to huge old lake trout an angler never knows what he might land. This lake was known as a brown trout paradise many years ago but over the years lake trout were introduced to reduce the sucker population and succeeded, however they also reduced the browns. While browns still exist in large numbers they have been reduced by the fierce lake trouta. Another fish introduced into San Cristobal was the kokanee salmon. These are a great game fish and offer the angler quiet a thrill when hooked. They are also one of the best eating fish in the lake. The introduction of salmon in this lake has always been a mystery and the story goes that a plane loaded with salmon fry intended for another lake was forced to make an emergency drop due to bad weather. Blue Mesa Lake 45 miles north of here has a large population of kokanees and the DOW does a great job of raising stockers for that lake. Migratory birds abound as well as beaver, muskrats, elk and moose. It is not unusual to see a young moose taking a cool swim in the warm summer months. The elk and moose love to winter in the willows at the south end of the lake as well. Canada geese love this high country and will stay until old man winter forces them to move south close to Christmas time each year. For those of us who live on the lake watching and hearing these beautiful Canadians is a real pleasure. Many types of watercraft are seen on the lake from one man kayaks, sailboats, aluminum fishing boats to powerful ski rigs. Ski rigs are seldom seen with skiers behind because at 9000 foot elevation that water was snow a short time ago. Do the natural and irrigated water and water rights lend themselves to pasture enhancements? If the ranch is the greenest thing in the area, animals will come! • Migration Patterns – Does the ranch have historic migration patterns? What seasons do those migrations come through or onto the ranch? Is the property contributing winter habitat?
