On the winners podium they dream to be emergin’ Such are typical dreams of the tri virgin High tech efforts to go faster like Total Immersion Are the tactics used by some tri virgins To go faster they shave their legs and arms cause they think they are hairy All in an effort to complete all three and pop the tri cherry. So we salute you in swim, bike, run—and three sport aversion And toast to the day you are no longer a tri virgin.

Dear El Fuego, Is it more cost effective to buy 2000 dollar wheels to make me faster, or spend the time training that it would take me to make the two grand. Thanks El Cheapo

Hey Sailor, Funny question you do present! HARGGGG! Here’s your quick answer, “Yes, race wheels make you faster”, but when you compare the benefits that race wheels bring to the entire list of things you can do to be a faster rider, it might not be worth spending the $2 grand, until you get in shape!!. Research shows that it’s clearly the RIDER that determines how fast the bike will go. You need strength to generate power, which translates to watts, which is what the cyclist needs to move the rider and the bike forward. And you need to be small so there’s less of you to create power for. Roughly, the average rider power requirements needed to move the bike & rider forward on a course with a zero net elevation gain: 60% is contributed to rider drag, 12% to rolling resistance, 8% to wheel drag, 8% to frame drag, 8% to bike & rider inertia, 0.5% to wheel inertia forces, and 3% unaccounted for. When evaluating wheel performance, wheel aerodynamics is the most important, distantly followed by wheel mass. Wheel inertia effects in all cases are so small that they are arguably insignificant. How can it be that wheel inertial forces are nearly insignificant, when the advertisements say that inertia is so important? Quite simply, inertial forces are a function of acceleration. In bike racing this peak acceleration is about .1 to .2 g’s and is generally only seen when beginning from an initial velocity of 0. Furthermore, the 0.3kg/0.66lb difference in wheels, even if this mass is out at the rim, is so small compared to your body mass that the differences in wheel inertia will be unperceivable. Any difference in acceleration due to bicycle wheels that is claimed by your riding buddies is primarily due to cognitive dissonance, or the placebo effect (they paid a lot of money for the wheels so there must be some perceiv-

Dear El Cheapo-

If you have the disposable income to throw down on a set of slick wheels then go for it. Such a great feeling when someone on a beat up cruiser with make shift aero bars calls out “ON YER LEFT!!” Your ego will be left with a serious bruise for weeks. You may even have to call on Mark’s therapy services to get you through to the next race. Seriously, if you have the dough, then buy them but to really get full benefit from them you need to already be able to maintain 18 -20mph. I would first ask yourself if you are maxing out your bike training already? If you have been slack on the ride time then you would be much better off spending time instead of money on your bike. How many miles are you putting in? Are you doing a variety of rides- long, tempo, interval, hills? It really is about the rider more than the bike (you could put Lance on a unicycle and he’d still smoke the field!). My suggestion is to plan out your bike training and spend time building your base and getting stronger & faster. You may also consider spending some coin on enlisting in a coach that can help you assess what your strengths & weaknesses. So… not knowing what kind of rider you are to begin with my suggestion would be to train your arse off THEN go get yerself some wheels…. and make sure you pass everyone without them!

Able gain)

Wheels account for almost 10% of the total power required to race your bike and the dominant factor in wheel performance is aerodynamics. Wheel mass is a second order effect (nearly 10 times less significant) and wheel inertia is a third order effect (nearly 100 times less significant). The best wheels in terms of performance are the ones that are lightweight, aerodynamic, don’t rub brake pads and are strong enough to get you to the finish line. The problem with these high performance wheels, though, is that they sacrifice on the other two key variables important in wheel selection: durability and price. High performance wheels are neither durable nor cheap. So save your $2 thousand bucks for now, lose some weight, and double up on your training. Get stronger and lighter and you will go faster. Nothing is ever easy, is it? If you still want the race wheels for your next race, I hear you can rent top of the line Bontrager or Zipp wheels at The Trek Store in S. Tampa for only $75 dollars. What a steal! And you know how I love to steal! ARRGGGHH!! El Feugo Lives!!

Well, there you are. Real questions and real good advice from the El Fuego and La Fuega team.
