ALL YEAR ROUND STAR GAZING & ASTRONOMY HEAVEN!
WINTER SPACE KIDS Mon 15th, Wed 17th & Fri 19th February 2016 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm A return of one of our most popular holiday time events… for parents and their young scientists Our Space kids events are designed to inspire, enthuse and educate, in a way the youngsters will never forget.
FAMILY DAYS OUT
Kielder Observatory A magical and unique visitor attraction under the largest protected Dark Sky park in Europe Kielder Observatory is one of the most remarkable places to visit in the whole of the UK. A public observatory which is second to none, under some of the darkest skies in the world.
Winter nights are darkest and best for viewing deep sky objects such as galaxies, while in summer you can view the beautiful Milky Way, passing comets, shooting stars and see the Sun’s surface using our incredible telescopes. Booking is essential via our website www.kielderobservatory. org/events
FAMILY ASTRONOMY These events take place every Saturday from 5pm to 6.30pm Tonight you sit back, relax and listen to your kids amaze you! Watch their faces as they get more and more interested in the topic as we whizz them through the Universe at breakneck speed, with stunning visuals and the famed Kielder Observatory delivery team. They will be absorbed! Following the interactive talks you will all enjoy a tour of the observatory and an introduction on how to use the powerful telescopes.
4
These instructions are given with special focus to our younger visitors, the specific aim being that no matter what age or experience anyone can become an Astronomer. Even at this early time the skies will be dark enough for us to observe so we will open the observatory doors and guide you around the darkest skies in England looking into space at objects such as planets, galaxies, nebulae and star clusters.
The event starts with a brief talk and questions from you, our audience, which our astronomers will endeavour to answer, though with some of the questions we get from young minds, it’s even a challenge for us!.. Then a chance to touch real rocks from space, meteorites from the Moon, Mars and the asteroid belt, some of which are even older then the planet you’re stood on right now. Then a full tour of the observatory, and a chance to see, play with and drive our two big telescopes! As it starts to get dark we may even be able to see some stars! Then rocket making, we turn Kielder in to mission control, and teach you how to build and launch your own rockets. A fun packed few hours of wonder and real discovery..
Family tickets to these events cost £45.63 and includes 2 x adults and 2 children.

A closer look: Earwigs These long, glossy brown insects can be recognised by the characteristic pincers at the hind end of their body. Although there are about 1,000 known species worldwide, only four are native to the UK. Earwigs are generally nocturnal, and seek out dark cracks and crevices to rest during the day. They are mainly vegetarian scavengers, but will eat carrion and other insects.
IN THE GARDEN
Preparing for Spring With Spring upon us, lengthening days begin to tempt keen gardeners back out again. In all areas, there is still time to plant trees, hedges and shrubs before they resume growing in the spring. You can also plant bare rooted fruit trees and soft fruits. If it is too wet and cold for gardening, sit back and use the time to plan for the coming year. Why not look at other gardens in your area to see what grows well and looks good at this time of year? If you have a well-established flower border and want to increase the amount of flowers at no cost, you can divide perennials such as hardy geraniums and asters. These will have formed new growth under last year’s leaves. If you dig these up carefully and split them in two, you can then replant both. They’ll do best if you add a little compost to the ground first. Very early bulbs will now be through, including snowdrops, crocuses and, in the south, daffodils. If you want to plant some for next year, note in your
Despite their name, earwigs are unlikely to venture into a human ear!
diary now to buy and plant bulbs in the autumn. If you grow winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) for its bright yellow flowers through December and January, it’s now the right time to cut back flowered shoots to strong buds after flowering. You can also buy them now to plant against a wall or fence to provide some winter colour for next year. Other shrubs you might like to try for winter flowers include: witch hazel (best in acid soils), Viburnum bodnantense and Daphne mezereum. If you like grasses, one that looks good in a winter border is Stipa calamagrostis. If you leave it after it’s flowered, its tawny seed-heads look great in frosty weather. You can then cut it back in March or April when new leaves appear. Any seedheads at this time of year will provide welcome food for birds.

8
Although they have wings, earwigs are usually reluctant to fly. Unlike most insects, a female earwig is a good mother. She lays 20-30 eggs and protects them through the winter. When they hatch, she feeds and tends the nymphs until they are able to fend for themselves.
This month’s jobs Plant trees, shrubs and hedges in milder weather. Prune winter dogwoods to just above ground level. Spread compost or bark around shrubs and trees. Prune apple and pear trees. Make a pond or wetland. Check bird baths and ponds and remove any ice. Put up nestboxes. Buy seed catalogues and plan what you will grow.

Capital One Cup Final The League Cup Final will be held on 28 February 2016 at Wembley Stadium. THE STORY BEHIND THE TROPHY In 1961, Aston Villa - the inaugural League Cup winners - lifted the iconic trophy for the very first time. More than half a century later, the same piece of silverware is still in use. The original trophy was commissioned and paid for by Football League president Joe Richards, who had his named engraved on the prize. Richards’ support for Football League secretary Alan Hardaker, the man credited with first proposing the League Cup, by creation of the trophy is regarded as fundamental in bringing the League Cup to fruition. He later told Hardaker: “One day it will be played for on the Wembley turf but not in my lifetime.” But Richards would live to see it happen, when in 1967 – a year
14
before his death – the Final made its debut beneath the Twin Towers. And today, the prize still bears his name as part of an inscription that reads: The Football League Cup Presented by the President J Richards Esq. J.P., Season 1960-61. Richards entrusted the design and production of the trophy to Mappin & Webb, one of the UK’s leading retailers of fine jewellery and silverware who got to work creating the iconic and unusual threehandled prize – a feature based on an old design from a ‘loving cup’. Modelled in a typical Georgian style, the trophy is in the shape of an urn with C-scroll handles and panels of shell and scroll decoration. A plinth – ebonised with an inscribed silver band – was later made separately to complete the design. Measuring 27 cm by 20.5cm, the cost to reproduce the same trophy today would be worth around £20,000. www.capitalonecup.co.uk
It has been dubbed as the Golden Super Bowl because it will be located in the Golden State (California); held in the home stadium of the San Francisco 49ers, a team named after the miners of the California Gold Rush; and because a 50th anniversary is traditionally the “golden anniversary.” Multiple acts will perform during the halftime show and on December 3, the league confirmed that the show would be headlined by Coldplay. RECIPE
Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes
Purple Sprouting Broccoli with Chorizo and Potatoes Simple and full-flavoured, this relies on the paprika flavour of good cooking chorizo for its success. Smaller, more waxy potatoes are best as they’ll hold their shape. Serve this dish on its own or with roasted chicken, fish or a fried egg. Serves: 2
INGREDIENTS 300g potatoes, scrubbed but left whole and unpeeled 200g purple sprouting broccoli, trimmed if necessary 1 tbsp light olive or sunflower oil 1 cooking chorizo (about 100g), skinned and crumbled Juice of ½ lemon Handful of parsley leaves, chopped Salt and black pepper
Bring the potatoes to the boil in a pan of cold, salted water. When simmering, cook for 15-20 minutes, depending on size, until tender. Drain and leave to dry. Boil or steam the purple sprouting broccoli for 3-4 minutes, until just tender (see page 218). Drain and refresh in very cold or iced water to stop the cooking process and preserve the colour, then drain again. Cut the cooked potatoes into wedges. Heat the oil in a frying pan. Add the chorizo and potato and fry on a medium heat for a few minutes to cook the chorizo through and crisp the potato. Add the broccoli and fry for a minute or two more to warm it through. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkling of chopped parsley.

LOCAL HISTORY
Tynemouth Castle is located on a rocky headland (known as Pen Bal Crag), overlooking Tynemouth Pier.
TYNEMOUTH CASTLE AND PRIORY The moated castle-towers, gatehouse and keep are combined with the ruins of the Benedictine priory where early kings of Northumbria were buried. The coat of arms of the town of Tynemouth still includes three crowns commemorating the tradition that the Priory had been the burial place for three kings.
Little is known of the early history of the site. Some Roman stones have been found there, but there is no definite evidence that it was occupied by the Romans. In 651 Oswin, king of Deira was murdered by the soldiers of King Oswiu of Bernicia, and subsequently his body was brought to Tynemouth for burial. He became St Oswin and his burial place became a shrine visited by pilgrims. He was the first of the three kings buried at Tynemouth.
In 792 Osred who had been king of Northumbria from 789 to 790 and then deposed, was murdered. He also was buried at Tynemouth Priory. Osred was the second of the three kings buried at Tynemouth. The third king to be buried at Tynemouth was Malcolm III, king of Scotland, who was killed at the Battle of Alnwick in 1093. The king’s body was sent north for reburial, in the reign of his son Alexander, at Dunfermline Abbey, or possibly Iona. It is believed in 1095 there was a castle on the site consisting of earthen ramparts and a wooden stockade. In 1296 the prior of Tynemouth was granted royal permission to surround the monastery with walls of stone, which he did. In 1390 a gatehouse and barbican were added on the landward side of the castle. Much remains of the priory structure as well as the castle gatehouse and walls which are 3200 feet (975 m) in length.
