GARDENING TIPS SEPTEMBER 2015

CUTTING BACK, PRUNING AND DIVIDING Don’t neglect hanging basket maintenance - a little deadheading, watering and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn. Once they are past their best, re-plant as winter/spring hanging baskets with spring-flowering bulbs, winter heathers, trailing ivies and springflowering plants as above. Continue to deadhead plants such as Dahlia, Delphinium, Rosa and Penstemon to prolong the display and give colour well into the month.

FROM SUMMER TO AUTUMN

Continue cutting back perennials that are fading and dying down.

Bring inside any tender perennials, such as Fuchsia, Gazania, Lantana and Abutilon, before frosts cause damage.

Now is a good time to divide any overgrown or tired looking clumps of alpines and herbaceous perennials such as crocosmias. This will invigorate them, and improve flowering and overall shape, for next year.

THIS MONTH’S GENERAL MAINTENANCE TIPS

Wait for the first frosts to hit dahlias and cannas before lifting the tubers or rhizomes. In warmer regions, they may be all right left in the ground, but do cover the crowns with a protective layer of straw or bracken. Some tall late-flowering perennials, such as asters, may still need staking to stop them being blown over in the wind.

top growth, are killed. Treasured plants must be protected with plastic sheeting.

SOWING AND PLANTING Sow sweet peas in a cold frame or the greenhouse for early summer blooms next year.

Sow other hardy annuals (e.g. Consolida, Calendula, Centaurea, Limnanthes and poppies) in situ. If you sowed any springflowering biennials such as Viola, Digitalis (foxglove) or Erysimum (wallflowers), earlier in the summer, they will now need planting out.

Most perennial weeds are vulnerable to weedkiller in early autumn. Applying a product containing glyphosate will ensure that the roots, as well as the

This is a good time of year to plant new perennials, especially towards the end of September, as the soil is still warm, but moisture levels are increasing.

Information and guidance provided by www.rhs.org.uk and www.rspb.org.uk

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Newcastle upon Tyne Musical Theatre Company know how to put on a show. As guests at their opening night production of Sister Act, staged at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal we were treated to a wowing performance.

A Class Act! The 14 piece Orchestra directed by Michael Lamb, dazzled with the upbeat original musical score by Alan Menken. NMTC performances offer a wealth of talent making up the cast and crew, many of whom commit 6 months of their spare time into each annual production, resulting in shows by amateurs that could rival professional west end companies. Sister Act did not disappoint, telling the hilarious story of Deloris Van

Cartier (Lauren Gordon), a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime. Placed under the protective though suspicious watch of Mother Superior (Helen Cash), hiding in a convent for her safety, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices in a bid to save the convent from financial ruin. The stand out performance of the evening for us had to be Blaydon girl Helen Cash. Helen had a really true, pure tone to her voice, which was perfectly suited to her role as Mother Superior. The comedy timing of Sarah Wales as Sister Mary Patrick donning her ‘fat suit’ for her role was perfect, her quirks mimicking that of Kathy Najimy who made

famous the role in the 1990’s block buster movie of the same name. The upcoming talent of 14 year old Ty Roach-Thompson was also clear to see in his portrayal of TJ. The evening left us excited to discover the Company’s summer 2016 production will see the Jets and Sharks take centre stage in West Side Story. Discover the dates (not yet confirmed) and how to obtain tickets by visiting www.newcastletheatreco.com and www.theatreroyal.co.uk. We will most certainly be in attendance!

NO TIME TO WORKOUT?

The number one reason why you don’t exercise is that you don’t have time. I know we are all busy. Between getting to and from work, balancing responsibilities and having time for yourself, there’s little left over for workouts. With summer in full swing your busy schedule is sure to get even busier. There will be vacations, cookouts and family gatherings. It’s no wonder that exercise quickly takes a backseat to summer activities. You don’t have to succumb to weight gain this summer. Escape the time crunch excuse in three easy steps: Step One: Schedule Your Workouts: You’ve heard this before, and it makes so much sense. If you treat your exercise time with the importance of a work meeting then you’d never skip a workout and you’d be in amazing shape. While the scheduling concept is brilliant in its simplicity, you have to put it into practice to reap the benefits. Pull out your calendar and a pen. Don’t laugh, I’m serious! Just do it. If you want to get into shape it starts with committing to a revised schedule with a set exercise time. Identify three 40-minute time slots and mark them on your calendar. That is when you’ll exercise. Remember this: if the thought that you should exercise this week is floating around in your head, but you haven’t anchored it down to a specific time and date, then it will quickly disappear.

Step Two: Get the Most from Each Minute: The days of endless, mind numbing cardio are over. A great workout can take place in under an hour, when done correctly. The idea is to burn more calories each minute. This is done through short, intense bursts of exercise.

Use the following three tips to bring your routine up to the next level:

1

Be Unstable: Use your entire body, and target your core, by performing exercises that engage stabilizing muscles. To do this use an exercise ball, a balance board, a balance disk, or you could simply stand on one leg.

2

Add Resistance: The more resistance that you incorporate with your routine translates into higher intensity and more calories burned. Some ideas for adding resistance include: carrying dumbbells while doing lunges, wearing a weighted vest while walking or jogging, or putting a weight between your feet while doing leg raises.

3

Use Intervals: Interval training is an amazing tool for creating short yet effective workouts. Don’t worry, it’s not complicated. Interval training is simply alternating between different short bursts of activity.

THE RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015

The 2015 Rugby World Cup will be hosted by England from 18 September to 31 October 2015. Twickenham Stadium in London will host the final. England was chosen to host the competition in July 2009, beating rival bids from Italy, Japan and South Africa. The competition’s organisers, Rugby World Cup Limited, had recommended England to the International Rugby Board.

After England were appointed tournament hosts the proposed stadia for the tournament were revealed (Including St. James’ Park). The final venues were confirmed, along with the tournament’s schedule, on 2 May 2013.

Of the 20 teams competing at the 2015 World Cup, 12 of them qualified by finishing in the top three places in their pools in the 2011 World Cup. The other eight teams qualified through regional competition. Of the 20 countries that competed in the previous World Cup in 2011, there was only one change - Uruguay replaced Russia.

The teams finishing in the top two of each pool will advance to the quarter-finals. The top three teams of each pool will receive automatic qualification to the 2019 Rugby World Cup. England are featured in Pool A and the group incudes: Australia, Wales, Fiji and Uruguay.

THE US OPEN
