Taking over the valley – sixth factory for Express As part of its continued expansion, precision engineering operation Express has taken on its sixth Team Valley site – to be known as factory five! The deal for the 24,000 sq. ft. unit, which will accommodate the business’ welding operations, has been in the pipeline for some time – meaning a sixth site was established first by the rapidly growing company.
has also secured additional turning and milling machines from Scotland. All this has been installed at a 32,000 sq. ft. site between Kingsway and Princes Way - the company’s fifth site on the Team Valley.
It brings the total amount of operational space on Team Valley to 160,000sq. ft. – a three fold increase in just four years.
Said Express Group Chief Executive, Nigel Davison: “Our recent investment in new machinery, unique to the UK, a new assembly and testing centre and now this specialist welding facility means our oil and gas business is ready to move to the next level. We have the capability and capacity to produce new components and move into new markets with new customers.”
Express Engineering recently joined an elite group of 45 organisations in the UK to be certificated under the International Institute of Welding approved ISO 3834 standard for its clad welding process – producing robust components for sub-sea operations. Other highlights during the year include a £1.5 million multi-tasking Mazak machine, the first of its kind in the UK and only the second in Europe. It will allow Express to make new components, whilst ensuring that the existing products for the oil and gas exploration and extratction markets are produced more efficiently.
The group has invested almost £18 million in the past four years. In addition to the expansion of the oil and gas division on Team Valley it has acquired other engineering businesses on Tyneside and in Stokesley, North Yorkshire - where it has created an aerospace and industrials division – and established sub-sea component manufacturer, Petrotec, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The purchase is part of a £6.5 million investment programme for the year which
A capital injection from mid-market private equity investor LDC – which took a minority
equity stake in the business late in 2013 - and a grant from the BE Group’s Let’s Grow Fund have supported the expansion programme. As a result, almost 100 new jobs have been created this year, including 13 new apprentices, meaning the workforce has almost quadrupled – now just under 500 – in the past four years. Earlier this month the business broke into a league table of the country’s fastest growing, privately owned firms, being placed 88th in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100. As one of 13 new entrants on the list, Express has achieved an annual sales growth of 50% over the past three years, taking the turnover to almost £38 million. Fast Track 100 has been published each December for the past 17 years. Typical listed companies are owned and run by entrepreneurs, have between 20 and 500 staff, an average three-year sales growth of between 50% and 300% per annum and sales of between £5 million and £100 million. Around 20% have venture capital backing.

MOTIVATION DAY LAUNCH The UK’s first official National Employee Motivation Day TOOK PLACE ON Wednesday 21st January A nationwide study has revealed that over half of British workers are completely unmotivated at work every day, with 43 per cent saying ‘feeling valued’ is their top motivator.
Those working in the media are the least motivated with 68 per cent admitting to slacking off regularly and two fifths confessing they don’t actually enjoy their job. For two in ten media bods, responsibility and recognition are their key motivators – sound familiar? To reignite the nation’s motivation, National Employee Motivation Day was dedicated to boosting morale across Britain’s workforce!

Team Valley Industrial Evolution is coming…
UK Land Estates, the region’s premier industrial and warehouse developer, has unveiled ambitious plans for a £30m scheme on Kingsway, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, which is capable of accommodating some 1,000 jobs. John Seager, Director at UKLE, heralds the marketing launch as a ‘landmark in the development of industrial property in the North East’. “The industrial element of the scheme proposed as part of the 10-acre mixeduse development, will deliver the most advanced buildings of their type seen in the region, most appropriate as the site was once the home of a leading engineering company, Huwood. That was the past, today we have a clear vision of the future – this is industrial evolution,” says Mr. Seager. Included within the master-plan are three buildings – the flagship No 1 Team Valley up to 80,000 sq ft including offices and Nos 1 and 2 Kingsway both 30,000 sq ft including high specification two-storey offices designed to offer an unparalleled sense of arrival. Designed by Teesside’s architects, Lister Associates, they fulfil the brief to radically re-think the industrial buildings. “The site is very prominent at the northern end of Kingsway. Our ambition is to set new levels of industrial space for the region that is likely to appeal as a headquarters for a high- end manufacturer keen on location, image and attracting a skilled workforce,” explains Mr Seager. Mark Proudlock, Partner, industrial agency, Knight Frank, says: “The prominent location, excellent connectivity, and the quality of building design, will ensure this becomes one of the premier addresses in the region.” 12 www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
Keith Stewart, Director at joint marketing agency Naylors, added “The occupier could well come from the offshore, wind and gas, technology and IT sectors as well as manufacturing and engineering end-users seeking a style of operational building that reflects a significant corporate image with a style, elegance and finish that sets them apart.” Available on a pre-let basis, occupiers have the opportunity to plan their own space within the footprint which combines offices with warehouse/industrial space, 12m high eaves, the ability to install cranage, excellent yard space and parking facilities. The office content will
be Grade A standard with architectural features including a glass atrium looking up to first floor level. “This will be space that will reflect the success of the occupier and be an attraction to a skilled workforce. What we are proposing is market leading, innovative and at the forefront of architectural design for industrial and warehouse space,” adds Mr. Seager. INTERLINK EXPRESS
Interlink Express takes 18,000 sq ft Team Valley Depot Interlink Express, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Geopost, the mail, parcels and logistics group which covers more than 40 European countries and serves 230 countries throughout the world. It has taken a 17,897 sq ft warehouse, unit B ‘Aquarius’, Kingsway, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, on a 10 year lease from owners UK Land Estates. The new facility is operated as a franchise by brothers Glen & Steve Watson who also hold the franchise for the Teesside and Durham area working out of recently acquired premises at Stockton. Glen Watson (pictured) said “We recently took on the Gateshead & Sunderland franchise of Interlink Express but found that the existing depot at Chester Le Street was simply too small to cope with the volume of business and there was no capacity to expand the operation. This new facility on Team Valley provides almost twice the floorspace and is easily accessible both for deliveries and also for the public 18 www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
collecting parcels. It will greatly enhance Interlink’s network in the region being an important part of the UK business which delivers over 285 million parcels a year via 100 depots with 2,500 vehicles,”. Shirley Simpson, Senior Lettings Surveyor at UK Land Estates commented “This letting illustrates how popular Team Valley as a location remains and Aquarius was the last large unit we had available on the estate. We are bringing forward major new industrial schemes on Team Valley at both Kingsway North (former Huwood’s site) and Dukesway Central and this letting is a clear endorsement of our company’s drive to provide further new space” Simon Haggie, partner of joint letting agents Knight Frank, says “Both our
joint agents Naylors and ourselves have received considerable interest in this unit but it seemed to be the perfect fit for Interlink Express, combining the advantages of an attractive prominent building with a dedicated secure yard, an essential requirement for a transport business of this nature. We are now down to the bare bones in terms of modern stock of this size in the Tyneside conurbation and desperate for new development to come forward” says Mr. Haggie.

Gateshead’s Advantex secures £500k worth of new business Work to provide IT services for a North East car dealership is among new contract wins worth in excess of £500k for fast growing Gateshead firm Advantex Network Solutions Ltd. The firm, one of the region’s leading suppliers of IT and communications services, has been working for the region’s most successful Peugeot dealership Simon Bailes Peugeot, across the company’s four sites in Northallerton, Guisborough and Stockton. The contract has included a major upgrade to the dealerships’ PC technology network as well as a new Internet infrastructure and enhanced secure Wi-Fi connectivity for staff and visitors. Advantex has already installed internetbased telephony and data cabling but has won this second phase of work after proposing a proactive solution to further improve services. Advantex’s head of IT John Prescott said: “This exciting project will see touchscreen PCs installed and connected in their showrooms to 22 www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
enable customers to interactively select and build their own cars. “The showrooms will be securely connected together to allow the Simon Bailes Peugeot teams to better communicate with each other, allowing staff to flexibly work anywhere with access to all their emails and documents.“
among the systems being upgraded by Advantex over the next three years – the firm will also be providing an on-going Internet connectivity and security. Owners of the hotel and restaurant Jesmond Dene House are also investing in a three-year IT programme for their St. Mary’s Inn site, which is under refurbishment at Stannington, Northumberland.
A third phase of work will see the expansion of the existing internet-based phone services (VoIP) to the Northallerton showroom and the ability to call from site to site to reduce telecom costs and provide reliable and fast communications for the company.
There, Advantex is installing a new IT infrastructure and IP telecommunications system, which it will also manage as part of an on-going service and maintenance agreement.
Elsewhere, a deal has been won with Prudhoe-based manufacturers and suppliers of unlicensed medicines The Specials Laboratory. Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, telecommunications, call recording, and ICT support services are
The contracts are the latest success for Advantex, which is looking to boost current turnover of £4 million by 20% in the next year and expand its workforce of 45 people as work starts to ramp-up in the coming months.
North East house prices £40k less than UK average The North East is the second cheapest place to buy a house in the UK, coming slightly above Northern Ireland in the latest First Time Buyer Tracker from Your Move and Reeds Rains. The average house price in the North East is £108k, compared to a national average of £149.9k. Average deposit in the North East is £16.2k, £9k less than the UK average. London is the most expensive place to buy a house, with average purchase price at £290.1 and average deposit at £68.1k. The stamp duty reforms announced in the Autumn Statement will have the most pronounced effect on first-time buyers in London and the South East. At the other end of the spectrum, the changes will have little effect on first-time buyers in regions where the average purchase price for a first home in below the lower stamp duty
threshold of £125,000 – including the North East. Adrian Gill, director of estate agents Your Move and Reeds Rains, said: “The Government unveiled a revised stamp duty structure in the Autumn Statement, and this will further nurture demand at the lower end of the market. “But while it will have a big impact in the capital, the changes will be less noticeable elsewhere – and in some areas where the average price of a firsttime buyer property is still beneath the bottom tier, they may be negligible. “Still, the media buzz surrounding the announcement has pepped up interest regardless.“ Source: www.bdaily.co.uk
The firm is already targeting further growth on the back of this and another recent contract to supply IT services to several schools across Wearside, Tyneside and Teesside. Managing director, Simon Bailes, said: “We’re currently undergoing a period of development and investing heavily in our operations systems so that we can continually provide the highest levels of customer service. “Advantex is helping us to do exactly that and has been exceptionally proactive in developing our systems. “This latest investment will allow us to move forward with our growth plans across our four sites and help to secure our capacity for growth and expansion as we ramp up to meet customer demand for new cars over the next few years.“ Director Stephen O’Connell said: “These and other contract wins have seen the value of using us as a single source supplier of state-ofthe-art technology and services. “Our success has been achieved through sheer hard work, investing in skilled people and an on-going commitment to providing clients with a high quality, cost effective and proactive service.“ Business Networx Magazine 23

North East companies North East urged to seize new businesses £5000 voucher scheme to benefit North East LEP’s new heavyweight board driving from funding The business innovation has called on local companies to seize the opportunity to get Government-backed extension financial help to fund new growth ideas. Hundreds of North East businesses are set to benefit after a fund set up to support business growth projects was extended this week.
developing ideas and bringing new products to market, making the most of intellectual property or learning more about how to use design in business.
The North East Business Support Fund (NEBSF), which is part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, has been extended to June next year. The fund has already helped almost 2,000 businesses across the North East, offering support with the costs of projects designed to spur on their growth. To date, NEBSF has paid out £1.4million, to support a range of projects from expansion planning and product development to web design and marketing strategy development. The fund is managed by NBSL, a North East enterprise agency, and provides up to 40 per cent of funding for a project, up to a maximum of £1,400. John King, North East business support manager, said that the extension of the NEBSF funding to June 2015 will allow several hundred more SMEs in the region to access support that will help them develop and realise their expansion goals. John said: “It’s been fantastic for us to help so many businesses across the region to access this funding and see them grow as a result. We are delighted that more businesses in the North East will have the chance to gain access to support that will unlock their potential. “We support businesses of all types and make sure that accessing the funding is easy and hassle-free. The extension is great news and we are really looking forward working with even more businesses to help them succeed.“ Sourced from www.bdaily.co.uk. Supporting more businesses to grow through innovation is a priority of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership and a key theme of its North East Strategic Economic Plan. Chair of the North East Innovation Board, Professor Roy Sandbach (left), said: “While big flagship innovation hub projects, like those announced for Newcastle University and CPI last week, are important, we really want to find creative ways to support smaller innovation-centric businesses as they grow and deliver more and better jobs. “Through this voucher scheme, small and medium-sized businesses can focus their innovation work and add momentum to their growth plans.“

HOT ON THE ROCKS The Marquis of Granby iS an impressive stone building located in Streetgate, Sunniside just up the road from the Team Valley Trading Estate. Ran for decades as a brewery pub serving traditional pub food, in was taken over in late 2014 by David Bennison. The building’s interior has been given a facelift and the kitchen has been opened up so it is visible to all who enter. My husband and I decided to try out the new menu on a rare date night one Saturday evening. On arrival we were greeted by very friendly staff and seated at our table. We were offered drinks from the bar and left to peruse the menu. After hearing a lot about the Hot Rock Grill my husband was greatly looking forward to trying it out for himself. The menu is extensive and varied, boasting a range of starters, pizza and pasta dishes as well as more traditional pub food including fish & chips, mince & dumplings, curry & rice and steak & ale pie. The menu also includes hot or cold sandwiches for those in search of a lighter bite, side orders and a lovely list of desserts to try too.
tasted. The bread was perfectly toasted, the topping was the right combination of tomatoes and onion and the dressing finished off superbly. For main course my husband opted for the Hot Rock fillet steak. He was offered a choice of sauces and was able to choose two side orders from the list to go with it. He decided on his favourite peppercorn sauce with chips and salad. It arrived at the table in dramatic style, sizzling and steaming away on a hot rock heated to over 400 C. A plate was provided to put his steak on when it was cooked to his desired specification, of which the waitress was extremely knowledgeable over just how long a medium steak required to be cooked. The verdict on the hot rock was a positive one, my husband enjoyed cooking his own steak and he said the home cooked chips he had were amazing. After changing my mind several times due to the menu containing so many things
I wanted to try, I finally decided to go with the pizza ring. This is a different take on a half pizza / half pasta option with the pasta being served in a bowl in the centre of the cut out pizza. The pizza was freshly cooked and was very tasty but the pasta was heavenly. I chose the pepperanta and it was so delicious I didn’t want it to end! We decided that since we were out for the evening we may as well go all out and have dessert as well. I chose the knicker bocker glory which came packed full of juicy berries, meringue, cream and icecream, it was so refreshing and the perfect ending to my meal. My husband opted for the syrup sponge which he found to be light, moist and totally delicious. Our overall experience of the Marquis was a fantastic one. The atmosphere is lovely, the staff are friendly and helpful, the decor is warm and cosy and the food is absolutely amazing. We loved every minute of our time there and will definitely be back!
The starters arrived beautifully presented on wooden boards and were both accompanied by a rocket salad. My husband opted for the chicken wings on fire, which he said were meaty and full of flavour, whilst I opted for brushetta. As starters go I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular, however I can honestly say it’s the nicest brushetta I have ever

PEOPLE IN NORTH EAST TRUST LOCAL BUSINESSES MORE THAN BUSINESS GENERALLY - CBI’S YouGov POLL People in the North East have a dramatically higher level of trust in businesses in their area than they do in UK business as a whole. The CBI’s Great Business Debate (its campaign to increase public trust in business) recently published a YouGov survey of over four thousand people, including 172 in the North East. It shows that, when people’s feelings about businesses are determined by their direct experience, they are overwhelmingly positive but that this often fails to translate into support for business generally. In the North East 81% of people trust ‘local businesses’ (firms in their vicinity, big or small, that they interact with) compared with 62% who trust business overall. That matches a pattern for the whole UK where the figures were 81% and 57%. The CBI is encouraging individuals to recognise that contradiction and calling on businesses to go further in strengthening their engagement with the areas where they operate. It is also calling on businesses to tell the bigger story of their contribution to communities, jobs and investment more convincingly. Dianne Sharp, CBI North East Director, said: “Businesses here have a job to do using the
warmth felt for them at a local level to improve feelings about UK business as a whole.
Other key findings for the region include:
“When people have direct experience of companies, for example as customers or employees, it’s overwhelmingly good and trust is high as a result. But opinions about business generally seem to have less solid roots. These views are more likely to be influenced by things people read or hear second hand and are a lot less positive.
other businesses in the area by sourcing
“As part of the CBI’s trust-in-business campaign, The Great Business Debate, we’re challenging individuals to think about the contradiction in how they perceive businesses locally and business generally. We’re also calling on firms in the North East to build on the positive engagement they already have in the areas where they operate and to tell more convincingly the story of their impact on jobs, investment and taxes which is felt in communities all over the country.”

gateshead hour
Twitter UK has 15 million followers In December 2014 Debra (Dee) Coxon host @Gatesheadhour and @Onlinehour was chosen by Twitter UK to represent the voice of small business on the Twitter platform. Her website www.theonlinehour.com provides tools and resources for followers of Twitter Hours up and down the country and it was this along with her activity on the Twitter platform that attracted the attention of Twitter UK hence the invitation to their London HQ to meet Twitters Director of Small Business for EMEA (Europe Middle East and Africa) Mr Barry Collins. Debra spent two days with the Twitter team and did a total of eleven radio interviews alongside Barry Collins. she described her visit to the high- spec high tech Twitter offices as an incredible experience and said “on arriving at reception and noticing a Dalek on duty I just knew it was going to be one to remember and Twitter did not disappoint” The purpose of the trip was linked to Small Business Saturday UK, a grassroots, non political, non commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to shop local and support small businesses in their communities Small Business Saturday
UK takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year and the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses year on year. During the radio interviews Debra and Barry discussed how and why small businesses should and could get involved with #SmallBizSatUK and more importantly the benefits of using Twitter for small business, not least because it’s free to everyone and can be used as an effective marketing tool. Driven by her passion to see every large town and city across the globe (with access to internet) launch its own regional Twitter Hour the phenomenon is certainly gathering momentum. In 2011 there were a handful of Twitter Hours operating, by the end of 2014 that number had increased to 500 plus across the UK alone. Described as an “outstanding social communicator” Debra explains how business owners using Twitter need to put down the digital megaphone, stop shouting about their business, start
building relationships instead and see the value of being social in every aspect of their lives. In this “social age” businesses must care about more than their bottom line. They must give back, provide mentorship and care about real social issues. They must act consistently and collaboratively, share what they know and really connect with people. Customers are so fed up with hype and sales talk they are now looking for the heart in a business. They want to know who is behind the brand and this requires openness and transparency from business owners. Information about a business can be found easily online but in this social age that’s no longer enough. People want more than information, they want a connection and one of the quickest and easiest way to begin making these connections is through Twitter. @gatesheadhour is an online “people to people” market place and currently has over 5,000 followers connecting narrow and deep with a local audience, allowing them to raise their business profiles and elevate their online presence. An inclusive network @gatesheadhour is free to join and takes place on Thursdays 8pm till 9pm on Twitter. All you need is a Twitter account and you’re in.
