Small businesses in GATESHEAD SOUTH, Newcastle and North Tyneside now have extra time to apply for £3,000 grants for better broadband Newcastle and Gateshead have undergone a dramatic transformation of its digital landscape, latest figures show. As one of the UK’s “Superconnected Cities”, Government has invested in helping Newcastle develop the digital infrastructure it needs to remain internationally competitive and attractive places to invest, visit and do business. Figures released today reveal that almost 300 Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside businesses have been given grants for a faster and more reliable internet service, and dozens of free public Wi-Fi hotspots are created in and around Newcastle and Gateshead. Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said: “I’m delighted that Newcastle has taken up the challenge to become one of the UK’s Superconnected Cities as part of the Government programme. It’s vital that our cities have the digital infrastructure like superfast broadband and Wi-Fi in place to deal with the demands of the digital age. Our investment in Newcastle has delivered a welcome boost to Newcastle’s economy, and is all part of our long term economic plan.” Across the UK more than 14,000 small businesses have taken up broadband grants of up to £3,000 each. The broadband grant scheme (due to finish on 31 March 2015) has been so popular that the offer has now been extended, and is being offered to an additional 28 UK cities.
Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Investment and Development Cllr Ged Bell said: “Newcastle City Council, in partnership, is making Newcastle become a digital powerhouse thanks to the help that our small and medium sized businesses are receiving to get connected to superfast broadband – it’s making Newcastle one of the betterconnected cities in the country, which can only benefit the economy of the North East.” The broadband grants provides up to £3,000 towards the installation costs. Many businesses are also opting to apply as a group to connect bigger or more complicated premises. Once installed, businesses pay the line rental and VAT. Businesses in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside can apply by visiting www. connectionvouchers.co.uk The scheme is open to small businesses in 50 cities around the UK and small businesses are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment. One group of Newcastle businesses who have benefited from the scheme are retailers at the prestigious Eldon Garden in the city centre. The shopping centre applied for connection vouchers on behalf of its tenants. Eldon Garden operations manager Dave Mains said: “Retailers work hand-in-hand with online services and sales these days, so superfast broadband can be a real boost for business.” Business Networx Magazine 11
ECONOMY
Radical review of outdated English business rates launched A “radical review” of English business rates has been launched, which will seek to bring about equality between digital companies and businesses struck by the annual property tax. The review, which is reportedly due in time for the 2016 budget, is set to significantly change the way the current system, launched in 1988, works.
12 www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
With the consensus that the current system is outdated, the review was first announced back in December’s Autumn Statement. Launching the review, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: “Our system of business rates was created nearly 30 years ago. “Since that time, the worlds of commerce and industry have changed beyond recognition. I’ve been impressed by the representations made by the business community and I know that business rates are a considerable cost.
“This government has taken measures to help businesses by capping rates and introducing reliefs for smaller businesses. “But now the time has come for a radical review of this important tax. We want to ensure the business rates system is fair, efficient and effective.”

will now look at increasing support in many more emerging markets, so that this opportunity can be grabbed with both hands. On ultra fast broadband, Mark said: “This is a very worthwhile commitment and builds on positive developments we have already seen. But as with other areas of infrastructure, we would like to see a detailed plan with timescales for implementation.” Overall, the region’s largest membership organisation was pleased with the announcements, which were seen as relatively positive although it was thought that some major announcements were bypassed. NECC Director of Policy, Ross Smith said: “There have been several positive announcements made by the Chancellor. The elimination of National Insurance payments for Under 21s and the abolition of the annual tax return will make life much easier for our smaller business members and contribute to the positive employment figures released on Wednesday morning.” Although the NECC welcomed positive updates from the Chancellor the organisation will continue to push for more powerful action on a series of vital issues. Ross said: “While there have been promises made around business rate reform, annual investment allowances and northern transport, we are yet to see action. Actions speaking louder than words and these issues need to be addressed as a matter of urgency by whoever is in the Treasury after the election.” With regards to International Trade, NECC Policy and Research Manager Mark Stephenson was pleased to see more resource promised to enhance the UK’s exports to the Chinese market. He said: “Funding additional trade missions will be incredibly helpful to our members who work in overseas markets; this will help many companies get into markets for the first time. There is a huge opportunity for companies in the North East in terms of exporting and we hope George Osborne
There was good news for North Sea industry. Mark Stephenson said: “These strong measures announced on oil and gas will help the excellent businesses and 65,000 people employed in the sector in the North East and we’re sure our members will welcome the news.” On annual tax returns, NECC Policy Adviser Rachel Travis said: “We were pleased with the abolition of the annual tax return, as this will be good news for many of the NECC’s smaller business members who find themselves tangled in red tape each year.” On reductions to National Insurance, Rachel Travis said: “This is a positive step that will encourage businesses to create opportunities for the talented young people in our region and further invest in training.” The announcement around the chemical industries was also welcomed by NECC. NECC Head of Member Relations Rachel Anderson said: “Providing £1m to the Centre for Process Innovation is the kind of investment the industry needs and I look forward to seeing this in place.” Tourism was also given a mention, with the Government backing reinstatement of the ferry from Norway to Newcastle. Head of Member Relations Jonathan Walker said: “The announcement to provide £300k funding for a new marketing campaign to promote the tourism links between Newcastle and Scandinavia is great news. Tourism is a valuable commodity in the North East and it provides an incredible knock on effect for many local businesses.”

Massive export drive lands top award A huge investment to drive growth – particularly exports – has landed Express Engineering a top honour. The Tyneside based Oil and Gas Division of the business picked up the Global Export prize at the annual Subsea UK Awards.
which monitors the UK’s fastest growing, privately owned operations and was placed 52nd in the International Track league table for exports. Said Group Chief Executive, Nigel Davison: “It is always nice to receive recognition for the improvements we make and so to do so at arguably the most prestigious awards ceremony in the subsea sector is great news.
The success follows a six-year, £12 million investment programme which has seen the company’s turnover more than double to £45 million and direct exports almost treble to £19 million. Overall about 90% of production is used overseas.
“Export is the lifeblood of our business. We have invested heavily in our equipment, processes and people, networking and building relationships in all of the global oil and gas hubs. We’ve increased capacity and improved scheduling systems to co-ordinate the activity and logistics of complex full turnkey projects - enabling smooth and seamless deliveries all over the world.
Last year the business broke into the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list

and technical engineering support, has resulted in multiple global supply agreements with our key accounts. We now have a firmly established operation In Brazil and are seeking to replicate this model, through tried and tested technology transfer, in other regions.” All of this has resulted in Express opening up new markets in Angola, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Singapore and the USA. The Subsea UK Awards coincide with Europe’s largest annual subsea exhibition and conference, Subsea Expo. The event took place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC). The coveted awards highlight the achievements of individuals and companies throughout the subsea industry and bring together peers in mutual celebration of the UK’s leading position on the global stage.

The total value of exports in the last year, up to the end of 2014, has risen by 7.24 per cent from the 2013 figure, while the national figure has fallen by 3.89 per cent. The latest quarterly export figures released by HMRC for September to December 2014 show that £3.289 billion worth of goods were exported from the region, an increase of £250 million, or 8.21 per cent compared to the same period last year. The value of exports from the North East for the 12-months up to the end of December was £12.416 billion, compared to £12.167 billion in the previous rolling 12-month period up to the end of September 2014. The North East also remains the only English region with a consistent positive balance of trade, exports greater than imports, with the figure at £4.45 billion. said: “It’s great to see that North East exports are continuing to grow, with more companies taking up the exporting for growth challenge. “The news comes as we once again begin the search for the region’s top exporters, with the launch of the North East Exporters’ Awards 2015 which recognise the efforts of companies that are making a huge contribution, through their exporting achievements, to both the regional and UK economies. “Exporting is good for business and we hope the region’s ongoing success, will not only encourage existing exporters to enter the awards but also inspire others to follow in their footsteps and help us play out part in the 2020 Export Challenge set by the government.” One of the region’s big export success stories in recent years has been Glanbia Performance Nutrition,
of Teesside, which received the Mid and Large Exporter of the Year Award last year. The company, which provides sports nutrition functional food bars and powders for many of the leading sports brands in the UK, has grown exponentially since 2011 and in 2013, the company embarked on a new export strategy, which has reaped rewards for the business. Alex Barker, General Manager at Glanbia Performance Nutrition’s manufacturing site in Middlesbrough, said: “We had an excellent reputation in the UK and set ambitious targets for growth across Europe for our contract manufacturing commercial team. The key elements of the strategy were to identify premium brands, and offer the quality, efficiency and innovation that had driven our UK business. “We decided to focus on the premium market, because the

Our reputation and desire to build relationships with the leading brands has been at the core of our success, and has ensured we have a very strong platform across the entire EMEA region for the future.” The HMRC statistics show that the Netherlands remains the largest single market for North East goods with a 12-month export value of £1.56bn up to the end of December 2014. Gateshead company secures £260k investment to develop risk and claims management app A Gateshead-based company has secured a £260k investment to develop its breakthrough risk and claims management tool further. Logincident is a mobile application which acts as both a risk and claims management tool for businesses. The app captures near miss and incident data across all major mobile platforms and can alert for instant action. The user is guided to input near-miss and incident data using the device’s auto GPS location, auto time, camera, video, audio and text functions. The reports are then wirelessly uploaded and the app stores and aggregates data from multiple devices delivering it via a central dashboard, providing managers with access to critical information about an organisation’s incidents, accidents, potential claims and H&S performance over time. Northstar Ventures provided the majority of the funding for this round (£200,000) via its Finance for Business North East Accelerator Fund, with the remainder being sourced from private investors. The deal was led by Irving Ramsay Limited. The funding will help drive Logincident’s awareness and growth of its customer base
as well as support the further enhancement of the product. Gary Davison, co-founder of Logincident, said: “We have already had tremendous interest in Logincident and have been fortunate to secure a major client, the global facilities services company, OCS Group. OCS Group has been a supportive and collaborative client and has worked with Logincident on product development. OCS will be the first adopter of Logincident which will form part of its risk management processes. “We also have a very strong development team headed by Brian Jobling, founder of North East based Eutechnyx, and the funding will enable us to expand our team and also help us focus on customer growth. “Our first key hire has been that of Mike Ridley who has joined us as Business Development Director. Mike’s experience and expertise are already having an impact on the business.“ Rebecca Roberts, investment manager at Northstar Ventures, commented: “I am
delighted to be working with Gary and his team, which is already expanding thanks to the investment. “The app has the potential to help reduce injury to employees, clients and the general public which will be a huge benefit to all concerned. And of course it will also bring benefits to companies and their insurers.“ Mark Irving, Director at Irving Ramsay, added: “Gary and the team have worked incredibly hard to develop this innovative offering over the last couple of years so it’s very rewarding to see them close a round of funding which will now enable them to accelerate the growth of the business.“ The Accelerator Fund is backed by the European Investment Bank, the Regional Growth Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.

PRIMULA BAG BETTER HEALTH AT WORK AWARD Primula has been awarded gold status from the Better Health at Work Award (BHAWA) for the North East region, recognising efforts to develop and embed a sustainable culture of health and wellbeing in the workplace. Primula’s employees were asked which health issues they’d like more information about, with stress, cancer awareness and healthy eating coming top. With this knowledge, Primula implemented a number of events and activities throughout 2014 involving staff, their families and the wider community to address this, including a Mini Cancer Roadshow, a Love Your Liver campaign and raising awareness for the GroceryAid helpline, a national charity which supports people who are working, or have worked in the grocery industry. Primula was awarded Gold status having successfully met the specific criteria for the Better Health At Work Award. Part of the Gold level criteria asks companies to also look outside their own organisation and promote health to the wider community, the company also implemented a three-year health strategy offering annual health checks for employees, running workplace health campaigns, sharing good practice
and ideas with other organisations, and promoting the benefits of workplace health.
be – any organisation’s largest and most valuable asset.
Paul Lewney, managing director of Primula, said: “These activities are not only informative and educational; they raise awareness while still being fun and engaging. They bring staff together from across the business, regardless of their roles, and this positivity is then shared wider with family and friends.
Primula clearly demonstrates an ongoing passion and commitment to health and wellbeing in the workplace, from both management and Health Advocates alike. It’s this enthusiasm which makes workplace health and wellbeing programmes like the Award so successful, with real on-the-ground benefits for employees and employers.
“We’re very proud to have achieved the Gold status and will continue to deliver activities and campaigns focussed on both physical and mental health as part of Primula’s company culture.”
“Well done Primula, I hope more and more employers follow your brilliant example.”
Beth Farhat, regional secretary of the Northern TUC which coordinates the Award and verifies all Award assessment achievements, said: “The calibre of assessments in 2014 was extremely high and it is apparent that those who participate in the award take the health and wellbeing of their workforce very seriously and regard staff as exactly what they should

EMPLOYMENT
North East employment rises 19,000 over the quarter but is it enough? The Office for National Statistics has today revealed that unemployment has continued to fall in Britain, while wage growth outpaced inflation at the fastest rate in almost five years. Yet, whilst employment has risen in the North East, the region still has a consideraly higher rate of unemployment than the national average. Headline figures for the North East include:
represents a huge symbolic victory. In spite of the economic progress we have seen in the past two years, regional unemployment has remained largely static, so to see it falling significantly in recent months is very encouraging.
n Employment in the North East stands at 1,157,000 or 70% – a rise of 19,000 over the quarter and increase of 43,000 over the year. This compares to a rate of 73.2% nationally.
“The unemployment rate dropped as fast as anywhere in the country while the increase in employment was bettered only by one other region.
n North East unemployment stands at 102,000 or 8.0% – a fall of 15,000 over the quarter and 23,000 over the year. This compares to a rate of 5.7% nationally.
“The North East business community has made the majority of this progress possible in the context of continuing retrenchment in the public sector, which just goes to underline the necessity for pro-business
n The claimant count stands at 49,000 or 4.1% in the North East, compared to 2.5% nationally. NECC Policy and Research Manager, Mark Stephenson, said: “Today’s figures continue the great start to 2015 we saw established in January. Every indicator is heading in the right direction and over 43,000 more people in work than this time last year. “Employment is at a record high for the third successive month thanks mostly to businesses, while unemployment is at its lowest in over five years – down 23,000 on a year ago. The claimant count continues its long term decrease. “While the North East unemployment rate remains too high, moving to 8%
public policy placing a premium on development, investment, employment and growth. “Ahead of a forthcoming budget and general election it is vital that political parties understand and safeguard the role that businesses play for the well-being of our country.” Source: bdaily.co.uk

SPONSORSHIP
Gateshead firm named official partner for 2015 Tour of Britain The 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain, which was officially launched on 17 March during a ceremony in London, announced that North East based KBR are to provide WiFi at all eight stages during the event, which is Britain’s biggest and best, professional cycling race. The Gateshead based firm, who specialise in providing wireless networks, have teamed up with event organisers SweetSpot Group, a well-known sporting event company, in a bid to get more people involved in cycling and to promote an active lifestyle. KBR will be providing free WiFi access to the public at each of the eight finish lines and press areas during the tour which runs from 6 - 13 September 2015. Local fans of cycling will have a chance to see some of the World’s best riders in action with routes running through parts of the North East, including Blyth and Prudhoe, for the first time in Tour of Britain’s history. Thanks to KBR’s mobile WiFi solution, spectators will have the power to connect live from the event, which is uncommon for outdoor events of its scale.
Managing Director of KBR, Robin Price, commented: “We are delighted to be providing our services at such a prestigious event, especially one with a North East presence. “Spectators at the finish line in Blyth will be able to take photos, login to their social media accounts, connect and share live updates with their friends. Because of our ability to provide such a service, we are indirectly encouraging people to get more involved in cycling.“ Gareth Tomlin, Technical Director of KBR, added: “Providing WiFi to large scale public events such as the Tour of Britain is technically very challenging but our 30 years in the technology industry has provided us with the expertise to do this.” Alastair Grant, Commercial Director of SweetSpot, said: “The Friends Life Tour of Britain has the biggest live attendance of any sporting event in the UK. We are proud to be working in partnership with KBR to provide a way for even more people to get involved in sport, and share the feelings and news of the day with a global audience.
KBR WiFi has been chosen as the official partner and provider of mobile WiFi solutions for the 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain. 36 www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
“Creating a sense of excitement and engagement around a major national event like this is extremely important and with help from KBR we can do this.“ Last year’s Friends Tour of Britain, which KBR also provided WiFi for, saw cycling champions Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel lead the strongest line up the race has ever see. This year will welcome the biggest names in cycling to the North East on Stages Four and Five. Wednesday 9 September will see the race head south from Edinburgh, through Northumberland to the finish in Blyth, before the racing resumes with Stage Five a day later, heading from Prudhoe to Hartside Fell in Cumbria, via Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall. KBR WiFi are also to provide outdoor wireless networks at the Women’s Tour 2015, which gets underway in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, on Wednesday 17 June.
