Sevcon kicks off first phase of its three-year triple digit recruitment drive Team Valley electric vehicle business Sevcon has launched the first phase of its triple digit recruitment push as it looks to support its future growth over the next three years. The initial push will see the firm add over 20 new members of staff in the coming months as it looks to expand its team of skilled engineers and technicians after adding £320m-worth of contracts to its order book. In total, Sevcon is looking to boost headcount by 200 to add to the 80 skilled engineering staff it currently employs from its Team Valley base, where it designs and manufactures controllers used in green hybrid and electric vehicles. The recruitment drive comes a little over a month after the firm was given the green light by Gateshead Council to upsize from its current premises to a new 55,000 sq ft HQ at the rear of Gateshead College’s Skills Academy for Construction on Kingsway.

Louise Morshead, Human Resources Manager at Sevcon, said: “Sevcon believes that a skilled, enthusiastic and driven workforce are the key to taking on the challenges to develop state of the art technology for the modern world of environmentally friendly vehicles. “The business is growing quickly with many major motor manufacturers turning to Sevcon to support the switch from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles to next generation electric and hybrid vehicles. “Sevcon has strong roots in the North East and is very keen to invest in and nurture local talent. In particular, we’re looking for male and female technicians and engineers wanting to make their mark in the world.”

Milestone for £350 million housing project An ambitious, £350 million programme, designed to transform the quality and choice of housing in the North East, has reached another milestone with the completion of the show homes on its fourth development. Senior representatives from the Gateshead Regeneration Partnership (GRP) - the joint venture driving the initiative - visited the properties at The Aspens in Birtley. GRP was established by Gateshead Council, Galliford Try and Home Group to regenerate 19 sites across the borough, delivering over 2,400 new homes for private sale and affordable tenures - with around a quarter for rent or shared ownership.
the number of new family homes across the borough that were affordable, sustainable and spacious. This scheme at The Aspens is a great example of the outstanding new homes now available in Gateshead.”
Work began at The Sycamores, adjacent to The Aspens, in 2014 and another site in Saltwell Road (Trilogy I) is underway with a fourth, smaller development - in Deckham - completed.
Brian Ham, Home Group Executive Director of Development, added: “We’re delighted that another significant milestone has been achieved in the Gateshead Regeneration Partnership. This £350m project is clearly demonstrating that joint venture working can bring benefits to all partners and provide the homes of all tenures which are so desperately needed.”
After visiting the four bedroomed show homes – The Hickory and Beech - and The Hemlock view home, Paul Dowling, Gateshead Council’s Strategic Director for Communities and Environment said: “We forged this partnership to increase
Stuart Gibbons, Divisional Managing Director with Galliford Try, commented: “Our goal is to work with partners across the region to provide high quality homes that meet the need for housing in all sections of the community and I am

delighted with what has already been achieved in Gateshead.” The project, which will provide jobs and training for local people and create artwork and new public spaces, is designed to help promote sustainable and long lasting communities across the borough. Galliford Try is constructing the homes and its housebuilding division - Linden Homes - is marketing the properties for sale. All GRP homes are built to high space and design standards and achieve, as a minimum, level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. They also meet Lifetime Homes and Secure by Design standards. North East businesses can have their postBrexit trading queries answered Businesses across the North East looking to plan for post-Brexit tariffs will soon be able to have their questions answered, thanks to the upcoming launch of a new information hub. According to the North East England Chamber of Commerce, companies region-wide have expressed concern over trading relations and procedures in light of Britain’s decision to leave the EU. Developed by i2i Infinity, new website will be launched in tandem with a Chamber session called ‘Brexit and Beyond’, where guests will hear what can be expected on issues including possible duty rates and how to prepare for the changes. Guest speakers will include Hirohito Imakoji, Liebherr Sunderland Works, who will set out his company’s approach to deciphering potential changes, and how the Chamber is assisting with this, using the website and technical expertise retained for members. Brian Dakers, Chamber international trade manager, said: “This website and the launch event have been designed to ensure businesses are able to find out as much as possible on the potential outcomes of the Brexit negotiations. “While it’s impossible to say what kind of deal we’ll achieve at this stage, we are sure that World Trade Organisation (WTO) rates of duty are the fall back option. “Our new Brexit toolkit allows companies to find out what WTO rates mean for their imports and exports, allowing for accurate assessment of the changes ahead, in the worst case, presuming no better deal is achieved. “Some businesses may be pleasantly surprised to learn what the percentages are, while others might find their situation less favourable but it’s obviously best to have the information, regardless.” Further information is available on the Chamber website. The Importance of Backing up your website Websites are no longer just something nice for a business to have, they are an important business tool, yet in surveys it was found that over 40% of companies don’t ensure that their website is safely backed up just in case the unimaginable happens like it breaking or worse being deleted from the web entirely. Why are backup’s important? > It’s not always your hosts responsibility to backup your website. A lot of web hosting companies won’t offer backups as part of their standard hosting packages and will often require you to pay extra for this support. As such if you don’t get this support from your hosting company and don’t backup the website yourself should something happens to your site your provider might not be able to help you restore the files. If you are unsure if your hosting comes with website backups contact your hosting provider to check the terms of your contract with them.
> Server Failure At the end of the day a server is just a computer and like all computers there is a chance that it could get a virus or have hard drive failure causing it to lose data.
> Protection from hackers While the aim of some hackers is to steal personal information such as credit card details, others just do it to prove that they can and cause inconvenience for the person that has been hacked. Ensuring you have a backup of your website means that should this happen to your website you are able to quickly restore it and get your site back up and running.
> Update Failure If you have a Content Managed Website you might have noticed when you’re asked to perform a security update that it tells you to create a backup before running the update. This is because websites have multiple files and components that make it work and store data, should anything go wrong with just one of these during an update then your entire website could be taken offline.
> Original development files can become outdated. A customer we had created a website for a few years back recently contact us because their website had been hacked. As we didn’t host the website and their
12 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
chosen hosting provider didn’t keep backups of their files, the only backup they had to get their site back up and running was our stored development site. So because they didn’t have a backup plan in place it meant that they lost around 2 years worth of news and updates to their website and effectively had to start again from scratch.
combination with on server backups to ensure that you have an off server version of your site to hand should you require one. The biggest downfall of this method is that it isn’t automated so you need to remember to do the backup, plus if your website is big and you have a capped bandwidth usage then it can take some time to download the site and cost you in bandwidth.
Peace of mind
> Cloud Backups
While there are a lot of technical reasons behind backing up a website doing it will also leave you safe in the knowledge that no matter what happens to your website you are able to react quickly to any issues and get it back up.
Using a cloud based solution such as Amazon S3 or Dropbox is our pick when it comes to backing up websites. This method of backing up files is both automated and is stored in a separate location from the web server. Also as the storage size is flexible it can be increased as your website grows meaning you only pay for the space that you need for your backup.
Backup Solutions > On Server Backups Backing up your website onto your server is the quickest and easy solution to creating regular automated backups of your website. There is however one massive downfall to doing this, the backups are stored on the same sever as your website. So while they can be a good method to restore your site should it get hacked or an update fail should the server fail in anyway then you will lose your website and your site backups.
> Ask your Hosting Provider
> Manual Backups
While hosting companies may not do this as a standard practice a lot will offer this service for an additional cost, this could be the ideal method for those that don’t wish to do it themselves. While it does mean that you are relying on one company to both host and backup your website, the backups will be stored in a separate location to your actual website, meaning that should the website fail you will still have a backup of your site.
Backing up your site manually is the most low-tech method of backing up your website, although you could use it in

BCC: Businesses must take action to prepare for new data protection responsibilities The British Chambers of Commerce is urging businesses to prepare for the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation which comes into effect next year. With a year to go until the General Data Protection Regulation comes into law, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is urging businesses to start preparing to ensure that they are compliant with the legislation when it comes into force. From 25 May 2018, all businesses that hold personal data will have to guarantee that their data procedures are fit for purpose and compliant with the new regulation. While the GDPR is an EU-initiative, the UK government has already made it clear that the legislation will still take effect in the UK after Brexit. Businesses that are found to be non-compliant risk potential fines of up to €20 million or 4% of annual worldwide turnover. Chambers of Commerce around the country are urging their members to start taking the necessary preparations to ensure they are ready for the regulation. Steps for businesses to take include: • Document what personal data the company holds, where it came from and who it is shared with. Firms may want to consider organising an information audit or speaking to a data expert.
14 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
• Review current privacy notices and plan for any necessary changes needed before the implementation deadline. • Check procedures to ensure that they cover all the rights individuals have under the new rules, including how to delete personal data or provide data electronically if needed. • Review how the company seeks, obtains and records consent from individuals, and whether any changes are necessary. • Ensure the right procedures are in place to detect, report and investigate a personal data breach • Determine whether a Data Protection Officer is required, and designate one if so, to take responsibility for data protection compliance and assess how the role will sit within the organisation. For more steps on preparing for the General Data Protection Regulation, businesses should revert to the Information Commissioner’s Office checklist. David Riches, Executive Director at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
“Businesses need to be proactive about ensuring they are ready for the new data protection regulations when they come into force this time next year, and not leave preparations until the eleventh hour. Those firms that don’t fulfil the necessary responsibilities leave themselves vulnerable to tough penalties, not to mention public scrutiny. “With twelve months to go, there are a number of procedures businesses should be reviewing to determine what changes may need to be introduced to be compliant. Businesses that are already vigilant about their data protection responsibilities, won’t be unduly burdened by the new legislation. “The General Data Protection Regulation is intended to reflect modern working practices in the digital age, and will strengthen consumer trust and confidence in businesses. It will establish a single set of rules across Europe, which will make it simpler and cheaper for UK companies to do business across the continent, even after we leave the EU.”

With the IT, automotive, manufacturing, energy and financial sectors booming over the past year, the region has enjoyed a total of 84 inward investment projects during the period, with 64 of these investments from foreign companies. Guy Currey, Invest North East England Director, explained: “The latest inward investment statistics are highly encouraging and show how attractive a location North East England is to foreign and UK-owned businesses. “Companies who choose to invest here tell us the region’s highly skilled,

“We are already expanding our team due to the volume of work and we are looking forward to delivering more successful projects for clients over the next 12 months.”
“It’s been a very positive first year for the business and we are proud to be working on flagship developments across the region, which are helping to drive economic growth,” said Jack Bruce, who is onsite managing the Intersect 19 project.
