North East bucks national trend as business confidence rises Business confidence rose across the North East to buck a national downward trend. In the latest Business Barometer from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, confidence among the region’s firms increased seven points to 8%. Companies reported higher optimism for the wider economy, at 7%, but confidence in their own prospects fell five points to 7%. Job creation plans also increased, according to Lloyds’ findings, with a net balance of 8% of North East businesses expecting to hire more staff during the next year. Last month, the net balance was just 4%. The overall rise in confidence and economic optimism in the North East contrasted with the national picture, which saw overall confidence fall 15 points to 4%. Similarly, firms’ confidence in their own trading prospects fell 14 points on a national level, although at 13% it was still almost twice as positive as it was in the North East. Nationally, economic optimism plummeted 15 points to -5%. Elsewhere, more North East firms reported feeling that Brexit is having a negative impact on their business activity expectations - a net balance of 12% in February, compared with 8% in January. Kelly Green, Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking’s North East regional director, said of the findings: “Along with the North East’s rise in overall confidence, it’s encouraging to see an increase in the number of businesses planning to hire new staff, a sign of optimism from local firms operating in what are difficult times for some. To support businesses in their plans for growth, we’ve committed to lend up to £700m to North East businesses in 2019, and we’ll be on hand to offer local firms our advice and guidance.”

‘Futuristic’ electric buses set to hit Newcastle and Gateshead Bus operator Go North East and Nexus the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, have been awarded funding from the government’s Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme.

Gateshead-based Entrepreneurs’ Forum increases support with new partner deals The Entrepreneurs’ Forum has announced a string of new partnerships to bolster ties with the North East business community.

The scheme helps bus operators and local authorities to adopt the latest green vehicle technologies by assisting with the extra capital cost of the vehicles and setting up depot infrastructure such as re-charging stations. Go North East and Nexus’ bid will see nine full electric zero emission buses enter service in the region, the first of their kind. Go North East’s managing director, Martin Gilbert, said: “Buses are a really important part of keeping our towns and cities moving, reducing congestion and improving air quality. “We’re therefore delighted to receive this funding to help support our investment in the introduction of full electric, zero emission buses that will make travelling by bus in the North East even greener. “These buses will build on our existing investment which has already seen over 170 low emission buses join our fleet in recent years, as well as an ongoing programme supported by local partners to upgrade the engine emission standards of much of our existing fleet.” The buses will form a key part of Go North East’s ongoing work with partners to improve air quality, further enhancing the already good per passenger journey emissions of bus use, and will be the first latest generation full electric buses capable of all day service to operate in North East England. They will be deployed in service between Newcastle and Gateshead operating over the Tyne Bridge, a major Air Quality hot spot. Overnight electric charging infrastructure will be installed at Go North East’s Gateshead Riverside depot, where the buses will be based. The vehicles, and associated in-depot charging infrastructure, are expected to be live by early 2020. www,bdaily.co.uk

Crabtree supports Kenya-based packaging company with bespoke metal decorating technology Global metal decorating and coating equipment pioneer, Crabtree, has experienced more export success with the design, supply and installation of a bespoke metal decorating machine for Kenya-based Metal Crowns. Metals and plastics packaging company Metal Crowns, which is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a further manufacturing facility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, commissioned Crabtree to provide a bespoke machine that would enable it to reduce labour costs and increase output. Crabtree has been designing and manufacturing metal decorating and coating machines and components from its site in Gateshead, UK for 50 years. It has a strong track record of exporting its machines and undertaking projects for businesses world-wide and has provided metal decorating technology in more than 90 countries spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australasia. Metal Crowns, which was founded in 1978, is a leading manufacturer of crown corks to the beverage industry and works with international brands such as CocaCola and Heineken. The company was seeking a solution that would improve time efficiencies and maintain quality in its metal decorating operations. Crabtree’s consulting engineers and design team worked closely with Metal Crowns to create a solution that was in line with its end-product requirements, formats and infrastructure. Metal Crowns was also able to select which machine functions to automate based on its specific requirements. Crabtree developed a user-friendly hybrid machine, in both cure and automated operation. A 3-colour FastReady press was commissioned with conventional and UV cure, along with an inline varnish and coating unit. And from an operational perspective, several CNC functions were removed that would not be required by Metal Crowns during operation. Crabtree designs, manufactures, builds and tests each machine at its own facility before dismantling, shipping and installing at client site. This ensures 100 per cent quality assurance and a client demonstration before the machine leaves. This ultimately allows Crabtree to provide one of the quickest installation and start-up periods in the market, with confidence.

Prior to delivery, General Manager Printing at Metal Crowns, Michael Hart, visited Crabtree’s Gateshead facility to sign off the machine and witness a demonstration of its capabilities. The new machine was able to demonstrate an actual production speed of 6,000 sheets per hour and a reduction in time taken to set the machine at changeover. Michael Hart, General Manager Printing, Metal Crowns said: “We are delighted with the level of service and attention to detail provided by the Crabtree team. I’m hugely satisfied with the company’s ability to really listen to what we need and to design a solution that meets our requirements. “For us, efficiency is the number one priority, so we tasked Crabtree with providing a machine that could deliver certain efficiencies in speed, accuracy and shorten the time to set the designs – this is exactly what they have delivered. “We have worked on a number of successful projects with Crabtree and as such they have been a preferred supplier of ours for the last 30 years. This is largely down to the quality and reliability of their product and the great relationship we have developed with them.”

Alan Rutter, Senior Director, Crabtree added: “It has been great working with Metal Crowns to develop their capability. In particular, liaising directly with Michael to specify a machine that ticks all the boxes. “We take on all kinds of projects here at Crabtree, centred around the clients’ wants, needs, skillset and infrastructure to name but a few. Versatility and approachability are common place as we look into projects with the Technical Team, in a bid to offer a solution for all potential clients, be it start-up or established, specifics or general. We’re proud of our openminded flexible approach, and we’re striving to offer more, as we want to be the solution, not the option.” As a pioneer in the manufacture of metal decorating and coating equipment, and with a heritage stretching back more than five decades, Crabtree has a unique understanding of the metal decorating industry and applies this to product innovation and problem solving. Its services include manufacturing and supplying components, upgrading machinery to give customers additional capabilities, servicing, maintenance, repairs and consultancy.

Gateshead Council approves transformation of former Npower Team Valley base Tolent bags new contract with £400m Leeds project

Plans to develop the former Team Valley Npower base into high-spec industrial and distribution facilities have been approved by Gateshead Council.

Tolent has announced its recent contract win at Kirkstall Forge, where the team will build the site’s first residential phase, with the contract initially delivering the construction of two prototype houses. Led by CEG, Kirkstall Forge is a £400m project in Leeds that will see over 1,000 new homes and 400,000 sq ft of offices, retail, leisure and community spaces being developed. The two prototype houses will be completed this summer and, once finished, members of CEG’s design team will move into the three and five-bed homes and test out the living experience. Improvements will be made to finesse the final product before continuing with the first phase of 112 contemporary homes, which were designed by Stirling Prize winner Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Regional director for Gateshead-based Tolent, John Currie, said: “This is another great win for the team which really shows the depth of experience and expertise we have as a national construction firm. “With such a significant and visionary project that is already winning awards, we’re looking forward to being a part of this legacy for Leeds as well as the innovative prototype housing which is something new for us.” Tolent has been working across the Leeds and wider Yorkshire area since 1990, delivering contracts from industrial, leisure and more recently student accommodation. www.bdaily.co.uk

This is another great win for the team which really shows the depth of experience and expertise we have as a national construction firm.

UK Land Estates will develop two adjoining sites - 4.92 acres of land - at Eighth Avenue with potential for up to 90,000 sq ft of warehouse and office space. The firm, said to be the largest commercial property investment and development company in the region, is now in talks with potential tenants to develop the sites known as Eighth Avenue East and Eighth Avenue West. Planning consent is already in place for Eighth Avenue West, while permission for Eighth Avenue East has recently been granted. Tim Witty, development director at UK Land Estates, said: “This is an exciting development that can be delivered within 15 months, and we’re hopeful of attracting occupiers to this prime location at the heart of the Team Valley. “Nationally there is a shortage of high quality industrial space and this

development will boost the region’s provision and support economic growth. “With a portfolio of land including existing planning consents, and a development team that can quickly and efficiently complete properties to client specifications, UK Land Estates provides high quality buildings for business.” A significant number of jobs are likely to follow the development. Team Valley is home to roughly 700 businesses employing more than 20,000 people from the skilled and manual service trade to high end manufacturing and professional services.

Dutch firm’s tender win sees five new electric car charging stations for Newcastle and Gateshead.

Dutch electric vehicle charging company Fastned plans to expand in the North East.

Fastned won a second tender in the UK led by the North East Joined Transport Committee. Fastned will build and operate five fast charging stations (hubs) for electric vehicles across the region. Each station will initially house two 50 kW fast chargers (known as “rapid” chargers in the UK) that will deliver 100% renewable electricity.

Two other Fastned stations are currently under development in Newcastle and Sunderland as part of the Go Ultra Low NE programme.

Fastned intends to build and operate the five fast charging stations in Gateshead, Blyth, Whitley Bay, Washington, and Kingston Park. These fast charging stations will enable fully electric cars to fast charge their batteries and will be added to Fastned’s European network. This network currently consist of 88 stations in the Netherlands and Germany and is expanding rapidly.

Michiel Langezaal, CEO Fastned: “Fastned was founded to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, so we are pleased we can start offering fast charging infrastructure in the North East of England. Reliable fast charging infrastructure will make fully electric vehicles just as practical as cars with internal combustion engines. Fastned has the ambition to build a European network

The five rapid charging hubs will help further establish the North East of England as a leader in electric mobility and are very good news for electric drivers in our region. 20 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk

of 1000 fast charging stations and aims to build more fast charging stations in the UK. Councillor Martin Gannon, Chair of the North East Joint Transport Committee and Leader of Gateshead Council: “The five rapid charging hubs will help further establish the North East of England as a leader in electric mobility and are very good news for electric drivers in our region. The hubs can provide electric freedom and ease of travelling for local commuters, commercial fleets, and travellers passing through the region.” The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the UK Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). The stations will be owned by the North East Joined Transport Committee. Fastned will manage the stations’ design and construction, and operate and maintain them as part of its growing network.
