Rocking out at the Marquis Local Businessman, David Bennison, has realised a dream that most men have but don’t get to do... …he has taken over his local pub and is transforming it with knowledge gleaned from his favourite experiences when travelling the world! David spent around 14 years of his career travelling around the world exporting products manufactured here in the North East. On his travels he was fortunate enough to experience many different styles of food, flavours and presentation styles. “When I was traveling overseas I used to miss the cosy ambience of the Marquis of Granby and the company of my fellow Geordies as opposed to pretentious restaurants full of very false people. I used to think that it would be nice to have creative, well presented food but in the lovely surroundings of the Marquis. Well here we are, my favourite local with great food but at sensible prices and nice people”. As David has other business interests he will not be working behind the bar so he has brought back Peter Thompson, the previous Manager who ran the pub very successfully
for a number of years. David said that; ‘Peter always had a smile on his face and has a very dry sense of humour, he’s just a nice down to earth guy who takes great pride in the quality and presentation of all the drinks’. For the restaurant David has brought in a head chef, Gabriel Bejenaru. David met Gabriel by chance one night while dining out and loved his passion for food. David said, “Gabriel loves what he does and is very creative, I was so impressed with him I instantly offered him the job of heading up the food side at the Marquis and after a couple of meetings he thankfully agreed to join the team”. Having been recently refurbished by Star Pubs and Bars (formerly S&N Pubs), David is now putting his own stamp on the family pub and restaurant, which is on the A692 between Lobley Hill and Sunniside. David has created his own brand of food called Hot Rock Grill. The new menu will have a variety of well-presented dishes but as the name suggests some of the dishes are served on a hot rock where the customer cooks either steak or fish themselves so they can cook it exactly to their liking. “I first tried a steak cooked on a rock in Seoul, Korea and thought it was really special. I’ve
6
always wanted a restaurant where I could offer it. Probably more associated with restaurants offering fine dining, however I thought why not offer this at the Marquis, I don’t need to charge silly prices and it’s a fun way of dining, Having said that if any customers would like steaks cooked for them we will be happy to oblige’. Another feature of the menu is freshly made pizzas in an open kitchen so customers can see their pizzas being prepared and cooked. New chef Gabriel will create New York style pizzas with whichever topping you like. He also serves pizza rings with a choice of pasta or salad in the middle. The menu also includes a great range of old favourites, special 2 course lunch offers and of course traditional roast dinners on a Sunday. “The bar will continue to be a focus as many customers like to just pop in for a relaxing drink and we are really aiming for the feel of good fun food, served in a great pub. No airs and graces, just pure quality ingredients, excellent staff and first class customer service. “We are on a main road, and hope that many passers by will start to drop in, as well as people from the local villages around us”.

Gone phishing! – 75,000 fake tax refund emails reported
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is warning taxpayers to be on their guard against fraudulent phishing emails, after almost 75,000 fake emails were reported to the taxman over the last six months. Some 74,743 scam emails were reported to HMRC’s dedicated phishing email account between April and September – a 70% increase on the same period in 2013. Over the same six-month period, HMRC worked with other law enforcement agencies to help close down more than 4,000 websites responsible for sending out the emails. The emails promise a tax refund, and often ask for a recipient’s name, address, date of birth, bank and credit card details – including passwords and their mother’s maiden name. Once the victim has provided the information, money is stolen from their bank account and their details are sold on to other criminal gangs, which can lead to identity theft.
Steve Singh, Deputy Head of Operations, HMRC Digital Security, said: HMRC never contacts customers who are due a tax refund by email – we always send a letter through the post. If you receive an email which claims to be from HMRC, and which offers you a tax refund, we recommend you send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then permanently delete it. We can, and do, close these websites down and we continue our efforts to work with law enforcement agencies around the world to bring down the criminals behind these scams. HMRC asks people to: Check www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/advice. htm for its online security advice Check to see examples of phishing emails online at: www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/examples.htm Forward suspicious emails to HMRC at phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete them. Avoid clicking on websites or links in suspicious emails, or opening attachments. Further advice can also be found at: www.getsafeonline.co.uk

Keep moving this winter with Go Smarter to Work Go Smarter to Work is all about helping people get to work in a way that is cheaper, greener and healthier, and even in the winter, cycling is the perfect way to do this. There are loads of great reasons to keep pedalling through the winter, keep an eye out as our Go Smarter to Work team will be out visiting businesses, giving some top tips and great advice to help you carry on cycling. Here are some handy tips to keep you safe when cycling this winter.
Be bright! Lights are a legal requirement when cycling in the dark, you must display a white front light and a red rear light. Always carry a back up set just in case the days turns dark earlier than expected.
Stay warm Layers, gloves and a good quality jacket will help keep you comfortable while cycling. You can improve your visibility by wearing a jacket with reflective tabs or wearing a bright colour.
Ride safe There are a few simple changes you can make to your riding which will help you in tricky conditions if you get caught out by the winter weather. You can plan your journey on our new journey planner to help you find alternative routes which may be safer in the winter months.
Don’t break the habit We all know it’s hard to get motivated, especially when it’s cold, dark and damp. But if you’ve been cycling to work already this year keep up the good work and try to keep going this winter. You don’t have to do it everyday, just give yourself a personal challenge to try cycling once a week.

British Safety Council New safety qualification designed for people driving at work The British Safety Council has launched a new qualification to help people who drive as part of their work stay safe on the roads.
The Level 2 Award in Safe Driving at Work provides learners with key knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with driving. It equips vehicle users with valuable guidance on the measures available for reducing these risks, such as vehicle inspection, behaviour and defensive driving. According to estimates from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), up to a third of all road traffic accidents in Britain involve someone involved in work-related activity. In 2013, according to government figures, 1,713 people died on the road, with the total number of casualties standing at 183,670. The Ofqual-regulated qualification, which is designed to be delivered by employers or training organisations, instructs learners on a range of topics including the particular risks
associated with vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, the importance of regular vehicle safety checks and how to adapt driving style in response to changes in driving conditions or the actions of others. Alex Botha, the British Safety Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Driving can be a risky activity, a fact borne out by the high number of injuries and fatalities that occur annually on our roads. “However, simple steps can be taken by employers and drivers to manage and reduce this risk. Our new Level 2 Award in Safe Driving at Work provides learners with all the essential knowledge to help them stay safe on the roads. “Learners can expect to leave the qualification with a thorough knowledge of the main risks posed by driving – whether to themselves or other road users – and how to reduce them. “Once registered with us, employers or training centres deliver the training using the high-quality teaching and student materials
14
provided. Qualifications are assessed through a 45-minute multiple-choice examination that can be either taken online or on paper. “This is a stand-alone qualification designed for delivery as a short course. It is also wellsuited for integration into wider vocational programmes of study or, for example, as part of an induction programme. Students need no former knowledge or experience, so can come from a diverse range of educational and employment backgrounds. “Safer driving habits should also feed through into workers’ personal lives, providing employers with a valuable corporate social responsibility tool to help make our roads safer in and out of work.”
eslington - early bird review Eslington Villa has long been renowned as a sanctuary for those searching for fine dining without the hustle and bustle of the big city. Tucked away in its own little haven just off the beaten track, the hotel is an impressive sight from its stunning building to its delightful gardens. Its varied and sumptuous menu has kept people returning for many years, however in order to attract new clientele the hotel has launched its new early bird menu. Served weekdays between 5.30 pm and 6.45 pm the menu comprises of five starters, mains and desserts with the option to have 2 courses (£14.95) or 3 courses (£17.95). There is also a selection of side orders to choose from and the option of ending your meal with coffee or tea served with chocolate truffles. My husband and I decided to try the new menu one Wednesday evening. We were
impressed with the whole service from the moment we entered until the moment we left. On entering we were sat in a very cozy lounge area set with comfy sofas and small tables and chairs. Our drinks were brought to us with an aperitif and the menu. Our order was taken promptly and we were led through to the conservatory dining area a short time later. The table was already set with slices of soft white bread and butter served on a small slate platter. The starters of black pudding served with julienne apple and apple puree and a ‘Yorkshire goats’ cheese served with beetroot, watercress and toasted hazelnuts were delicious and well presented. For main course my husband chose the Chinese style braised beef with yellow rice and pak choi whilst I opted for steamed hake served with squash puree, spinach, prawns and spiced butter and a side order of twice cooked chips to share.
I can honestly truly say it was the nicest meal I have had in a long time, everything went perfectly well together, cooked and presented impeccably, I didn’t want it to end! To continue our delightful food journey we took the option of the 3rd course. My husband had sticky toffee pudding served with hot toffee sauce and ice cream and said the combination of hot and cold worked so well together. My choice was Bakewell tart served with cherry jelly and cream drizzled with honey, the whole thing tasted amazing. Following our fabulous meal we retired to the lounge area for coffee which gave us a chance to further take in the opulent surroundings and reflect on our dining experience. I would highly recommend Eslington Villa to everybody, the staff are incredibly polite and well trained, the surroundings are beautiful and the food is amazing, a little taste of luxury for a very small price. We will most definitely be back.

Reaching New Heights after 25 Years
Universal Forwarding recently marked their 25th Anniversary at Newcastle Airport. As the two Directors Phil Naylor and Trevor Harbottle reflect on the changing face of North East businesses, they have no doubt that their success can be attributed to one main factor.“Service is and always has been what sets us above any competitor,” states Trevor Harbottle. “Many of our clients have been with us since the very early days of our business and consider us an extension of their team as we understand and adapt to their needs.” The company was founded in 1989 by the two Directors and is based at Newcastle International Airport Freight Village which gives them access to a worldwide gateway. With a 15 strong team and their own fleet of vehicles, Universal Forwarding has firmly established itself as one of the largest independent freight forwarders in the North East of England. Trevor is also a member of the Board of the International Freight Association which partners Universal Forwarding with worldwide representation.
“Our client base continues to grow,” adds Phil Naylor, “This can only be achieved by offering competitive costs without compromising on our quality of service.” The company operates 24 hours, 7 days a week. This proves to be an invaluable asset to their clients, given today’s competitive markets where exceptional customer service is key to success - as Universal Forwarding continues to prove 25 years later. Both Directors are committed to utilising the past 25 years of experience to drive the company forward, expanding their client base by offering bespoke, cost effective solutions. Simon Fisher, Finance Director at Newcastle International Airport, said: “Freight is a critical part of the Newcastle International Airport operation, and we are delighted that Universal Forwarding have played their part for 25 years now. Congratulations to all the team at Universal Forwarding on this important anniversary.”

Disciplinary Procedure - Why a Verbal Warning is not really Verbal. Under a disciplinary procedure or the ACAS Code of Practice on Discipline, there is reference to a verbal warning stage. Many people have taken this to mean that a warning can just be delivered verbally, without the need to record the matter. This in reality is some way off being an acceptable approach.

Lack of CPR skills in the North East could cost lives Less than half (47%) of adults in the North East have been trained in lifesaving CPR - a shortfall that could lead to people needlessly losing their lives to cardiac arrests, according to new statistics from the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The charity is today urging local schools, community groups, businesses and individuals to get behind a campaign to teach the whole of the North East lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Figures show that more than 28,0001 people suffer a cardiac arrest in England every year – 80%2 of which occur in the home, often in front of family members and loved ones. But fewer than one in ten (8.6%) people survive3, partly because not enough people have the skills and confidence to perform CPR. The charity says that in countries where CPR is taught to all young people at school, survival rates are as high as 25%4. If this was achieved in the UK it could save around 5,000 additional lives a year. In some cases, performing CPR will double a person’s chance of survival5. But the
figures show that many people in the North East are reluctant to act. · 70% of people would not feel confident performing CPR on a family member or loved one6 · 47% would be deterred by the ‘fear of causing more harm than good’ · 73% of people would not be confident performing CPR on a stranger · 54% admit that most people in Britain would look for someone else to take the lead if they were to witness a medical emergency The BHF’s new campaign includes the rollout of a quick-and-simple CPR training programme, a continued call on the Government to make CPR training a mandatory part of the curriculum in England and a commitment to running mass awareness CPR campaigns. The heart charity’s innovative Call Push Rescue training programme enables schools, workplaces and community groups to become completely selfsufficient in teaching CPR. Simon Gillespie, BHF Chief Executive, said: “Too many lives are lost needlessly because people don’t have the basic CPR skills to act in life-threatening situations.
22
“These figures show how crucial it is that people are taught CPR so they know how to respond if they witness someone suffering a cardiac arrest. The ‘Call. Push. Rescue’ message is simple to remember and by spreading this far and wide we’re determined to radically improve the country’s shocking survival rates. “We need every school, workplace, community group and individual in the North East to join our campaign to create a Nation of Lifesavers and help make the UK a safer place to live.” David Pitcher, Chairman of the Resuscitation Council (UK), said: “The Resuscitation Council (UK) welcomes and supports the BHF campaign to create a Nation of Lifesavers. It is so important that many more people know the simple things to do when someone collapses and stops breathing. An immediate 999 call and then giving CPR until the ambulance arrives can more than double a person’s chances of recovery.” To help the BHF create a Nation of Lifesavers, or find out how you can teach CPR in your school, workplace or community group visit bhf.org.uk/lifesavers To help the BHF create a Nation of Lifesavers, or find out how you can teach CPR in your school, workplace or community group visit bhf.org.uk/lifesavers

British Safety Council offers free stress advice to businesses With stress costing the UK economy £6.5bn, it is undeniable that this is one of the biggest health related priorities facing businesses. The British Safety Council is lending its voice to this important issue, as well asking workplaces to give due attention to occupational health overall. Alex Botha, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “Businesses managing risks in their workplace are increasingly seeing occupational health as a priority. A number of factors are contributing - a workforce that is ageing, the changing shape of our economy to one that is more service orientated, the pressures on government and the NHS with the fact that people are living with illness and disease for longer.
“But with so many pressures on businesses too, and the complexity involved, we recognise that we have an important role to play in providing practical steps on how to address occupational health. “We draw in the practical experience of thousands of our members dealing with these issues and we share their experiences but also identify what more can, and should, be done. “What we’ve seen is that in tackling occupational health, a lot of learning can be drawn from the ‘safety’ landscape. So often we see that it is about clear leadership, effective communication, appropriate training, good measurement and management – in a sense, health can be managed ‘like safety’. And the business case is there to support the value of such investments.” In support of European Health and Safety Week held this week, the British Safety Council is making its guide for employers on managing stress in the workplace freely

available until the end of November. The British Safety Council is increasingly highlighting the importance of good occupational health. Earlier this month, it held its annual conference and used the opportunity to raise the profile of occupational health matters. During the day’s proceedings, panel discussions were held covering key topics such as mental health and stress management. Similarly, the upcoming December 2014 issue of its magazine, Safety Management, will have a focus on occupational health with input from a number of key organisations engaged in such issues as mental health and cancer. To accompany the magazine, the British Safety Council will also be publishing an updated version of its occupational health guide.

Team Valley office building to undergo £1 million refurbishment
Naylors Chartered Surveyors have been instructed to undertake a £1 million refurbishment of Talipot House, a 17,000 sq ft, two storey office building located centrally on Team Valley, Gateshead.
Naylors will be working on behalf of the landlord, a private London investor, for whom they acquired the property in April. The multi-disciplinary firm of chartered surveyors previously undertook a similar project on Olas House, a sister building to Talipot House, which was acquired, refurbished and successfully let on a long lease to Gateshead Housing Group. Head of investment at Naylors, Fergus Laird said; “We are able to offer client acquisition services, building consultancy, letting services and sale of the resultant investment all under one banner. Our office agency team, headed by Simon Taylor, has been appointed to let Talipot House and are currently in negotiations with a prospective tenant, looking to occupy the refurbished building on an extended leasehold basis.”
The building, which is located on Fifth Avenue, was previously occupied by Daisy Communications Ltd and is in need of an extensive refurbishment in order to secure new tenants. Naylors Building Consultancy team were initially approached to undertake a condition survey and measured survey works of the premises including a full building survey, layout, roof and elevation plans, in addition to organising and overseeing additional specialist investigations via a number of approved consultant partners. Phil Garner, building surveyor at Naylors said: “Following our preliminary investigations we were instructed to specify, tender and oversee the initial strip out works. Now underway,
34
the design team is being assembled and specification for the proposed refurbishment is due to start in earnest within the coming weeks. The works are to include full renewal of all building services and finishes, remodelling of the reception area with a focus on improving energy performance throughout”. The refurbishment project is due to complete in May next year and Naylors hope to secure an occupier for immediate occupation.

Apprenticeship commitment at Express
Despite huge growth and change at Express Engineering, the company’s commitment to apprenticeships has remained resolute. Eleven new apprentices have joined the oil and gas division of the operation in Gateshead where a sixth factory was recently opened on the Team Valley. The new starters include apprentice engineer Nicolas Grimshaw, 19, from Gateshead, who was recently selected as Rolls Royce apprentice of the year 2014 and Express’ first commercial apprentice - Elliott Brown, 18, from Newcastle. Evan Crawford from Washington and James Kilburn from Sunderland, both 17, are undertaking apprenticeships in welding and fitting respectively and Daniel Routledge, 18, from Chester-le-Street and Andrew Bull, 19, from Newcastle, have started their apprenticeships in production engineering and scheduling. Andrew Kay, 20, from Seaton Delaval, James Miller, 16, from Washington, Ryan Amer, 19, from Easington lane, Danny Gatens, 18, from Jarrow and John Surrey, 23, from Gateshead, will all undertake engineering apprenticeships. Nicolas Grimshaw said: “I used to drive past Express Engineering every day on my way to college, but I never thought I’d actually end up working here. It has been fantastic. Everyone is helpful and supportive and I’m learning so much. Being
chosen as apprentice of the year out of 120 other trainees was a great honour but an even bigger prize has been securing my apprenticeship here at Express. I couldn’t be happier.” Elliott Brown added: “Express is putting me through my HNC for which I study at Tyne Met College one day a week. I’m also completing my three month Performance Engineering Operations qualification at Rolls Royce at present, before I move over to the Team Valley to spend a year on the factory floor at Express to provide me with an overview of how everything works. “Once I have a handle on all of this, the commercial side of my apprenticeship will start in earnest and I’ll be trained in stock ordering, job costings and timescales as well as customer and supplier management, with a view to begin managing my own customer accounts. It is a great opportunity and I’m delighted to be involved with a company that I know will support me well throughout my training.” An additional two Engineering apprentices - Ryan Harris and Callum Russell, both 18 – have also started work at Express’ Aerospace facility in Stokesley - taking the number of new training opportunities created across the group since the start of 2014 to 13. Said Express Group Chief Executive, Nigel Davison: “We are delighted to be able to offer so many young people the chance to learn new skills in a business which has a busy and bright future.
36
The apprentices join at a time when Express is investing almost £7 million in further expansion which is creating 30 new jobs at the Gateshead sites. It now employs almost 500 people at its Team Valley based oil and gas business, the Stokesley Aerospace and Industrial Product divisions in North Yorkshire and in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where it owns and operates Petrotec. Express Engineering has already been singled out as ‘one to watch’ in a league table of the country’s fastest growing firms. It is the North East’s only representative on a 10 strong list of operations tipped to break into the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 – the UK’s top 100 private businesses demonstrating the most rapid expansion. A 58% increase in exports over the past two years saw the business climb to 52nd in the International Track 200 table whilst a 250% growth in turnover over the same period (now at £37 million) and the subsequent increase in profit, saw Express rocket to eighth place in the Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 league table. This puts the company ahead of wellknown national brands such as Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian, biscuit manufacturer Tunnocks and Pret A Manger.
