Scented winter shrubs
That precious combination of colour and fragrance is all the more valuable in winter when we all need a lift, and there are some superb shrubs to remind us that winter is not all about endless rain or scraping ice off the car
Sarcococca
Chimonanthus praecox
(Christmas box) Sarcococcas, sometimes known as sweet or Christmas box, are easy evergreens with glossy pointed foliage. The blooms of some, such as the white-flowered S. confusa, tend to be hidden amongst the leaves - but their scent is unmissable and often the first sign of flowering is the scent wafting around the garden.
Viburnum × bodnantense
(wintersweet) Wintersweet, is well known for its winter fragrance and the clear yellow bells of ‘Luteus’ or the red-marked form, ‘Grandiflorus’, are often seen. But look out for ‘Trenython’ which has creamy, almost white, flowers brightly marked in red and an unusually powerful scent.
Hamamelis
(winter-flowering viburnum) Viburnum × bodnantense is widely grown but it’s almost always the variety, ‘Dawn’, that’s seen. The fragrant flowers are borne intermittently from early winter into spring.
(witch hazels) This is a case where choosing the right variety is crucial as while many are very brightly colourful, not all are scented. And a word of warning: H. × intermedia ‘Pallida’ is the best known and always recommended, and if you’re sold the right plant the colour and scent are marvellous. But there are impostors being sold under that name which have no scent, so either shop at a specialist, or choose another.
Lonicera (scented bushy honeysuckles) The scented bushy honeysuckles are well known - but again there’s one to look out for that should be grown more widely. Lonicera standishii var. lancifolia ‘Budapest’ not only has attractively pink-tinted flowers, strongly scented of course, but the new shoots on the 2m (6½ft) plants are coppery bronze in colour, providing a beautiful spring spectacle. Easily grown and tolerant of many conditions, although best against a wall in cold areas.

Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls. Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops.for use in the winter.

The Genting Arena in Birmingham will host the event on Sunday, 18 December and will celebrate an outstanding 12 months of British sport. Will this be the toughest year to pick a winner? Once again, it has been a summer when Britain’s sporting stars have done so much to delight. In Rio, second place in the medal table, 20 years after the Atlanta Olympics saw the nation finish 36th. They won gold medals in 15 different sports, a wider spread than any other nation - sitting-down sports, as the old gag goes, but also face down in watersports, fighting sports, multi-sports and running sports. Roast Potatoes with Lemon, Rosemary & Thyme Crisp and caramelised from roasting, tart and tangy from the lemons, this variation on traditional roast potatoes makes a particularly good side for chicken or fish, accompanied by a bitter leaf salad. INGREDIENTS 1.5kg fairly waxy potatoes (such as Marfona, Orla or Triplo), washed but not peeled, cut into halves or quarters, depending on size 2 lemons, cut into thick slices, plus an extra ½ lemon to finish 7–8 garlic cloves, unpeeled, lightly smashed 4 rosemary sprigs 6 thyme sprigs 4 tbsp olive oil Salt and black pepper
in a colander for a few minutes. Transfer to a roasting pan and scatter over the lemon slices, garlic, rosemary and thyme. Drizzle over the oil and toss together with your hands, making sure each potato is coated in oil. Season well with salt and pepper. Roast for 35–40 minutes, turning everything once or twice, until the lemons are starting to caramelise and the potatoes are golden brown. Squeeze over the extra lemon half, sprinkle with a little more salt and serve immediately.
Variations
Serves: 6 as a side
• Small waxy potatoes such as pink fir apples and Charlottes can be halved lengthways, tossed with oil and salt and roasted from raw at 180°C/Gas 4.
Heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Put the potatoes into a pan of cold salted water, bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and let dry
• Toss the potatoes with a tablespoon of wholegrain mustard before roasting for more of a zing.

King Charles I’s attempt to impose a new prayer book on the Scots led to military conflict in the summer of 1640. To avoid assaulting the strong defences on the north side of Newcastle, a Scottish army of up to 20,000 men under the command of Alexander Leslie (below) decided to cross the Tyne and attack from the weaker southern side. Lord Conway opposed the crossing from the south bank of the Tyne, constructing fortification to defend both of the fords.
The defences at the fords were breached and the English retreated in confusion, being ill trained, ill paid and largely reluctant to fight a battle for which they had little commitment. The English cavalry and infantry scattered in disarray in different directions. Some headed for Ryton, scaling the slopes of Holburn Dene and others headed for Stella, probably up Peth Lane which appears to have been in existence since medieval times. The Scots went on to capture Newcastle, which Lord Stafford hastily abandoned to its fate. The consequences for King Charles were to prove serious. The cost of raising the army had been enormous, and he then had to pay £200,000 to free Newcastle.

The Battle of Newburn Ford was the only battle of the Second Bishops’ War. Politically it was of the greatest importance. He was forced to recall Parliament in November- the famous Long Parliament - that sat until the Restoration, long after the king had lost his head and the Monarchy, as an Institution, much of its power. The landscape of 1640 was profoundly different from that of today. The river had been straightened and the floodplain largely developed. Even so, the topography allows an understanding of the course of events during the battle, which took place over pastureland with woods on the steep river cliffs.
DID YOU KNOW: Charles I was tried, convicted, and executed for high treason in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and a republic called the Commonwealth of England was declared. The monarchy was restored to Charles’s son, Charles II, in 1660.
