Beamish, the North East’s award-winning open air museum, is no ordinary museum. You won’t see ‘do not touch’ signs or objects locked away in glass cases. Instead you’ll take a tram ride back in time to the 1820s, 1910s and 1940s to explore The Town, Pit Village, Pockerley Old Hall and the 1940s Farm and see what life was really like.
Taste freshly baked bread, hear trundling trams on a bustling street, smell the steam from the engine as you ride on a train, feel the reality of life underground in a mine and be amazed as you see history come to life. And there’s never been a better time to visit Beamish with an Unlimited Pass, you pay just once and visit for a whole year free of charge. GARDENING TIPS MARCH 2015
HANDY TIPS FOR YOUR PLOT It is unusual to take over a pristine plot; many are in very bad shape, covered in weeds, debris and rubbish. The first step is looking at the plot as a whole and identifying what will give most pleasure and productivity.
ALLOTMENTS
PUT COMPOST BINS IN THE LEASTVALUED PART OF YOUR PLOT AND DISGUISE WITH ORNAMENTAL PLANTS
YOU CAN’T BEAT THE TASTE OF FRESHLY HARVESTED CARROTS, CRUNCHY COURGETTES OR CRISP LETTUCE GETTING STARTED ON YOUR ALLOTMENT With a bit of preparation work you can produce attractive and productive plots for crops all year round. Make sure you clear the ground, test the soil and plan what to grow when, to ensure a satsifying supply of food for the table. FInd out the easiest ways to clear the ground, check the soil and get growing.
MAKING THE MOST OF A PLOT Getting to know your plot is as important as it is satisfying. Once you find out what the opportunities are, as well as the limitations, you can plan what crops will grow well, look good and taste great.
CLEARING THE GROUND Ground clearing can look daunting, but even a full plot is only 250 sq metres (300 sq yards) and if you clear just five of those each week, the job will be done in a year. PRETTY AND PRACTICAL If looks come first, a plot may be laborious and output may suffer: low, clipped hedges, for example, are troublesome, and narrow paved paths are awkward, inflexible and need a lot of weeding.
Plots may seem to be blank canvasses of earth, but no two are quite alike. n Boughs can be pruned (with permission) for stakes, and their leaves composted. n Terracing can be used on slopes to make easy-to-work raised beds. n Wet patches are problematic, but are perfect if you hanker after a pond. n Most sites have areas of neglect, such as banks, hedges and ditches, that offer potential sources of pea sticks, leaves for leafmould and vegetation for compost. Exploiting these will keep them in better repair, but do agree any activities with the site management first.
MIX UP YOUR CROPS According to the theory of companion planting, mixing plants together confuses insects, especially if you mix a strongly scented plant such as French marigolds with vulnerable crops such as runner beans.

Carrot & Coriander Soup Classic, healthy and great for using up all those winter carrots. Serve with toasted sourdough or ciabatta, or chunky pieces of warm bread.
Method: 1. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large, heavy-based pan. Add the onion and celery. Fry for 10 mins, stirring now and then to stop it catching. If it does start to catch, add a splash of water.
INGREDIENTS Oil for frying 1 large onion, diced 2 sticks celery, chopped into small pieces 800g carrots (unpeeled weight), peeled & cut into chunks 1 medium potato, peeled & diced 1 litre good veg stock 30g coriander (a large bunch)

Serves 4 Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 30 mins
2. Roughly chop the coriander stalks off the leaves. Chop the stalks into small pieces and add to the onion and celery as soon as they’re ready. 3. After 10 mins, add the carrots, potato and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring up to a low boil, then simmer until the veg is tender, approx 20 mins. Add the coriander leaves. 4. Blitz in a processor or blender (in batches if needs be) until smooth. Reheat gently and check the seasoning to serve.

COMIC RELIEF RED NOSE DAY BRINGS RED NOSE DAY COMMUNITY CASH TO THE NORTH EAST
DO SOMETHING FUNNY
Local group, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, benefitted from a Community Cash grant last time around.
Fund worth £65,000 is ready to reach local projects in your community.
The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company is a charity made up of eleven performers and facilitators who have a learning disability. Their mission is ‘to change lives through theatre.’
As Red Nose Day returns and local fundraisers gear up for weird and wonderful cashraising antics in the name of charity, organisers Comic Relief announce a new £65,000 fund to support community groups across the North East.
Based in Newcastle, the theatre company empowers adults with learning disabilities to express themselves through drama, and to speak up about the issues that are most important to them. Their aim is to increase the confidence and independence of the young people.
Red Nose Day Community Cash grants of £500-£1,000 are available to small organisations in the North East that are doing great work to help local people living tough lives. Applications are open now, with the Community Foundation for Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and the Cumbria Community Foundation working with Comic Relief to get the cash to the groups that need it most.
Founded in 2009, The Twisting Ducks also delivers training to health professionals and the wider workforce to improve the quality of life for people with learning disabilities, leading to better quality services and treatment.
Interested groups can apply by going to www.communityfoundation. org.uk/ (Tyne & Wear and Northumberland) or www.cumbriafoundation.org/ (Cumbria).
10
A small grant from Comic Relief has helped The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company to purchase camera equipment to enable the group to make more films and
attract commissions from external companies to increase financial stability and sustainability. Jay Hare, who is the Project Co-ordinator said: “One of our biggest film projects this year has been ‘Work for All’, a DVD based toolkit that promotes employment, apprenticeships and work-based training for people with learning disabilities and potential employers.” This year the public is being asked to make their faces funny for money for Red Nose Day on Friday 13th March. The charity is urging people across the North East to paint their faces, wear a Red Nose or grow a sponsored comb-over to raise life-changing cash for vulnerable people all over the UK and across Africa. All the latest Red Nose Day news and fundraising ideas are available from rednoseday.com.

SPORT
BACK ON TRACK
THE 2015 FORMULA ONE SEASON WILL BE THE 66TH SEASON OF THE FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Twenty-two drivers representing eleven teams will contest twenty Grands Prix, starting in Australia on 15 March and ending in Abu Dhabi on 29 November as they compete for the World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ Championships. Lewis Hamilton is the defending Drivers’ Champion after securing his second title at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Mercedes will begin the season as the defending Constructors’ Champion, having secured its first championship title at the 2014 Russian Grand Prix. • Sebastian Vettel left Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2014 season after fifteen years with the team and its wider junior development programme to join Ferrari in the place of Fernando Alonso. Red Bull promoted Daniil
Kvyat from Toro Rosso to fill the seat vacated by Vettel. • Fernando Alonso will return to McLaren, seven years after he last raced for the team. After weeks of speculation, Jenson Button was confirmed as the team’s second driver, with Kevin Magnussen retained in a test and reserve role. The decision to appoint Button alongside Alonso gave McLaren the single most experienced driver line-up in Formula One history, with the drivers having over five hundred Grand Prix starts between them. Toro Rosso’s driver line-up was completely overhauled, with Kvyat promoted and Jean-Éric Vergne leaving the team to compete in the FIA Formula E Championship while joining Ferrari as a test driver. CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL March 10-13th It is a huge week for the whole racing industry with punters at the centre of the attention, the betting for each race often starts through the season and up until seconds before the off. The Festival itself is held over four days and continues to expand with every passing season, each of the four days has a feature race with the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Day Four the feature race of the meeting. The Gold Cup is the stand out race of the entire week at the Cheltenham Festival and the ante post betting will be as competitive as ever with a number of horses likely to be in the frame for the big race. One of those will certainly be Lord Windermere who is the defending champ and will no doubt be targeted at the race once again in 2015.
