BECOMING AN EMPLOYER? WHERE TO START When recruiting your first employee the two main things to do are: 1. Get the basics right, and 2. Keep it simple The basics You wouldn’t build a house without foundations so the first thing to put in place is a good contract of employment. Many businesses can overlook this basic legal requirement. Get your HR Policies and Procedures in place - it doesn’t need to be daunting. Think of them this way: • they set out what you have to do if anything happens that you need to deal with; and • they are your business protection in terms of showing you did what they said The keeping it simple bit Yes there’s a lot of employment legislation but keep things clear and simple, and deal with things fairly and promptly, then it is easier to manage. Key tips for achieving this are:
6 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
• Be fair and consistent • Be able to clearly justify any decisions which affect staff • Lead by example - practice what you preach and set your standards • Job clarity - ensure the employee is clear about what their duties, responsibilities and limits of authority are • Provide training to do the job • Nip potential issues in the bud early a quick quiet word may be all that’s needed to put them back on track • Don’t jump to conclusions or make hasty decisions - if you don’t know the answer to an employee’s query or particular point of legislation, tell them you will get back to them So what now? Make sure you put effective foundations in place. You wouldn’t spend £20,000 on a car or a piece of equipment without making sure what you were getting matched your needs and came on the right contractual terms.

Team Valley’s Kingfisher Media set to expand services following MBO
Ian Heads of Kingfisher Media with Ben Jackson of Hay & Kilner law firm.
A specialist Gateshead-based publisher is expanding its print and online offering after the successful completion of its MBO (managerial buyout). Kingfisher Media publishes an extensive portfolio of more than 70 visitor guides to cities and regions in the UK and Ireland, working with four and five-star accommodation providers to make them available in their guest bedrooms and lounge areas. The company was founded in 2007 by former journalist Colin Cameron, who has now sold his majority shareholding to co-director Ian Heads for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. Ben Jackson and Neil Dwyer of Hay & Kilner Law Firm in Newcastle advised Ian Heads on all aspects of the transaction.

forward to watching the company go from strength to strength under Ian’s leadership, and with the assistance of our top-class staff.”
It is also set to be substantially upgrading its online presence in the new year through a contemporary lifestyle web resource that complements its physical publications.
Ian himself added: “Kingfisher has a superb national portfolio of highly-regarded, high quality visitor guides and we are now beginning to execute plans which will take the business to the next level.
The business currently employs 25 staff at its Team Valley offices, and is looking to create up to four new jobs in the new year as part of its continuing development, with more expected to follow in the future. Colin Cameron, who sold his previous publishing business to Bob Geldof’s Ten Alps PLC in 2006, said: “Ian and I have worked together growing two businesses for more than 15 years now, and I couldn’t be leaving Kingfisher in better hands. “Kingfisher Media has developed an excellent reputation for publishing excellence in our sector, and I look
“The new, fully mobile-optimized website we will be launching in the new year will complement our physical guides perfectly and will allow us to regularly update our content to tie in with what’s happening in each location through the year, as well as to collaborate with local partners to support their promotions, events and venues.”

Gateshead Council teams up with expanding electric bike company Gateshead Council is the latest institution to partner with Tyneside’s expanding ‘eBike’ firm, Ride Electric. It is looking to change the way its employees travel around town and to work in the colder months. The news comes on the back of Ride Electric’s announcement this summer that it is on course for a £1.5m turnover in the next three years, and is set to undergo a large-scale recruitment drive within the next year. Ride Electric - which supplies electric bikes to the business community from its North Shields base - has said it is calling on all councils in the North East to follow Gateshead Council’s ‘forwardthinking’ approach to sustainable, green employee transport. The company hopes to expand its service to all local authorities in the region by the end of 2019. Speaking on the launch of its eBike initiative with the council, Ride Electric’s general manager, Craig Goff-Cooper, said: “eBikes provide a whole new mode of transportation and we’re delighted that Gateshead Council has embraced the technology we provide. “Public transport isn’t always reliable and parking is always a major problem for people. Driving short distances to work and to meetings every day can also be extremely uneconomical. “We want to get people active to and from work and in and around the workplace and we believe our eBikes provide the ultimate solution. We’re confident more councils in the area will follow Gateshead Council’s lead and provide eBikes for their employees. “Every single person who has tested out our bikes on behalf of the council has come back with a smile on their face. It’s great to see and we’re confident that our new partnership will pave the way for a more active future for their staff members.” As part of the new partnership, employees of Gateshead Council are now able to reserve eBikes using the council’s internal booking system for free. www,bdaily.co.uk

“Companies are capitalising on the UK’s world leading position in the greener economy as we transition to a greener, cleaner economy and is one of the greatest industrial opportunities of our time.

Jennifer Jach of Lear; apprentice Natalia Walas; and Paul Lockwood of Gateshead College.
Gateshead College partners with automotive firm to deliver national apprenticeship scheme
North East recruiter to promote ‘workforce of the future’ with New College Durham Team Valley based Westray Recruitment Consultants has announced a partnership with New College Durham (NCD) aimed at retaining talent in the region.
Lear Corporation, an automotive seating supplier, has teamed up with Gateshead College to begin the roll-out of a national apprenticeship programme. Lear Corporation has joined forces with the college and its strategic partner, Cidori, to develop a skills programme designed to help the Detroitheadquartered firm improve efficiency and increase employee engagement. Initial training has already taken place at Lear’s Coventry operation, which employs more than 1,100 staff, and saw more than 100 apprentices work on projects designed to improve the running of production lines and make the general workplace safer. Adam Ford, continuous improvements manager at Lear, said: “We wanted to find ways of encouraging our operatives to come forward with suggestions on how to improve not only themselves but the business. “That’s why we’ve developed this training programme with Gateshead College and Cidori, to give apprentices the skill set as well as the opportunity to make improvements that will have a significant impact. In the initial phase, we’ve seen a rise in productivity, a reduction in scrap and an increase in staff engagement. We can grow and develop our UK business while giving our staff the confidence and skills to progress in their careers.” The training equips apprentices with the skills, knowledge and understanding to meet the challenges and changing needs of a modern production environment. It also allows them to work towards a business improvement techniques qualification. Ivan Jepson, director of business development at Gateshead College, concluded: “We’re thrilled to be working with Lear on the national apprenticeship programme. We already have expertise in delivering a number of national training programmes with employers and work closely with them to ensure the training meets their evolving business needs. This gives companies a better chance of hitting their growth targets by becoming more productive and competitive.” www.bdaily.co.uk
The tie-up will promote opportunities for local employment and career development to students as they head off into the world of work. By pooling their business partner networks, Westray and NCD will help students access work opportunities that meet their needs in terms of both career development and financial goals. Westray Recruitment Consultants’ commercial director, Ashleigh Wright, said: “As well as networking, employers at the breakfast event will have the opportunity to take a stand free of charge, where they can speak directly to the students and display their company information. “This is an excellent opportunity for businesses to connect with the workforce of the future. In a Post-Brexit Britain, there is predicted to be skill shortages and lack of easily accessible talent.” She added: “This partnership looks to inform and strengthen business and education links, meaning there is the potential to reduce skills shortages.” Westray and NCD’s first joint event under the partnership is due to take place at the
college’s Framwellgate Moor premises on December 11. It will have a ‘meet the students’ theme, focusing on putting employers in direct contact with students seeking work placements. New College Durham vice principal Dawn Fairlamb commented: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Westray Recruitment. Ensuring our students gain work placement opportunities is a vital part of their studies. “These placements mean they develop the skills they will need to succeed when they go on to enter the workplace. In addition, it allows businesses to create a pool of talent for their own recruitment activities.” She continued: Westray have fantastic links and relationships with local employers, which will only enhance our students’ opportunities.”

Investors sought for Gateshead scheme that includes 12,500 seater stadium The development at Gateshead Quays will span almost 10 acres
The Department for International Trade (DIT) is supporting the creation of thousands of jobs in the North East with the launch of £2bn worth of new investment opportunities. The portfolio will help deliver 5,000 jobs at Gateshead’s Follingsby Max logistics and distribution centre and a new 12,500-seater stadium at Gateshead Quays. The latter development will span almost 10 acres and include 350 new hotel rooms across two buildings, more than 516,000 sq ft of leisure space and almost 41,000 sq ft of retail space. Minister for Investment Graham Stuart MP recently revealled the schemes at the MIPIM UK property conference in London, which is forecast to attract 3,000 property professionals and more than 300 potential investors from around the world. The £2bn portfolio includes schemes in Liverpool, Sussex, Edinburgh and Belfast. It was created by the DIT’s Capital Investment team, which is leading the Government’s drive to attract and support international investment for large-scale property, regeneration, infrastructure and energy projects in the UK.
22 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
Dr Liam Fox MP, International Trade Secretary, said: “It has never been easier to find opportunities for global investment in the UK and these seven projects worth £2 billion give investors the opportunity to do just that. “Not only will these projects promote our vibrant and successful real estate industry, they also create homes and jobs across the country.” He added: “As an international economic department, our message is loud and clear: the UK is open for business, and we can help find the right investment for you.” Minister for Investment Graham Stuart MP commented: “It’s a privilege for me to launch these new schemes, which will provide new homes and jobs for people across the country. “The UK is the number one destination in Europe for foreign investment, and we will continue to promote opportunities that help people find decent jobs and develop strong communities.”
Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry MP said: “From a transformed waterfront in Liverpool to rival any historic European city, to a new, state-of-the-art Quay in Gateshead, these new developments represent over £1bn of world-class investment in the Northern Powerhouse. “With Government working hand-in-hand with business and attracting international investment from across the globe, we’re delivering transformative regeneration for communities from coast to coast across the North - further evidence that the Northern Powerhouse is one of the most business-friendly regions in the UK.”
