Gateshead set for jobs boost as council approves £12.5m office scheme Gateshead Council has approved plans for a £12.5m office development that could bring hundreds of jobs to Baltic Business Quarter. The Grade A scheme, to be located next to the quays, will be leased by the real estate arm of French international banking group BNP Paribas. Newcastle architects Ryder Architecture designed the 50,000 sq ft building, which will be built by construction firm Willmott Dixon. It will be Gateshead’s first new Grade A office development in almost 10 years. Approval was granted after planners at Gateshead Council decided it would make “a significant contribution to the identified need for high-quality office floor space in the borough”. The authority’s chief exec, Sheena Ramsey, said of the project: “The commission of this new office development is another step towards achieving the vision for the broader Gateshead Quays. “It’s an exciting time for the borough. Not only will it bring around 600 new jobs to Gateshead but it will give a much needed boost to the local economy.” Work on the scheme is due to complete in late 2019. Aidan Baker, director at BNP Paribas Real Estate, commented: “Grade A office supply in Newcastle city centre and Gateshead has diminished significantly over the past three years and consequently demand outstrips availability for brand new accommodation. “The new office building at Baltic Business Quarter will therefore provide an excellent opportunity for potential occupiers to locate to the accessible and prominent area of Gateshead Quays.” He continued: “We foresee the flexible 9,000 sq ft floor plates not only appealing to SMEs, but large corporates looking to base themselves in a high specification headquarters building with excellent car parking and amenity.” Source: bdaily.co.uk

EMPLOYING YOUNG WORKERS Young workers (under 18 years old) have additional rights for their protection at work. Here is our advice for getting it right. 1. Get the contract right Many younger workers may be apprentices who are training for a specific trade or skill. Make sure a full Apprenticeship Agreement is in place as using a standard contract of employment will give enhanced rights. Training providers do not advise on the legal implications and the documentation they provide does not meet the correct legal requirements. 2. Understand pay requirements The current rate for 16 to 17 year olds is £4.20 per hour. The current Apprentice rate is £3.70 for those aged under 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship. 3. Working time, break and rest requirements Under the Working Time Regulations young workers are entitled to: • at least two consecutive days off per week • a daily rest break of 12 consecutive hours • a 30 minute break if the shift is more than 4.5 hours long • a limit of 8 hours of work per day and 40 hours of work per week
In addition, young workers cannot work between 10pm and 6am. Exceptions can apply in some circumstances. 4. Provide additional health and safety training Employers have the same responsibilities for the health and safety for all workers, but it is worth providing some additional training to young workers to allow them to work without putting themselves and others at risk. There are also age limits are in place for the use of some equipment and machinery e.g. fork lift trucks. 5. Ensure they have the support they need Young workers may require extra support so consider regular one to ones or a buddy to help them.

‘Madchester’ inspired record label launches in Gateshead A new independent record label formed by two local musicians has launched on the Tyne. Ginger Syrup Records, the brainchild of music producer, Dee Dowling and singer-songwriter Gary Wight, has opened its doors at its recording HQ on Bill Quay, Gateshead. The pair are said to be working with and developing the ‘best emerging artists’ from the region’s music scene.
Security
First ever security training centre for the region opens in Team Valley
Inspired by the legacy of ‘Madchester’ figurehead, Tony Wilson and his infamous Factory Records label, the new partnership forged between the pair will see the label actively hunt for musicians to sign up to the label from the region and throughout the UK. The label has said it will work with its artists to produce, develop and release singles and albums on an international scale. Dee Dowling said: “Working in collaboration with our in-house engineers, producers, photographers and filmmakers, Ginger Syrup Records is here for the long haul and we’re very excited about the future. “As the live music scene changes with the death of the club culture, venues will change and so will the clientele. All of that talent will have to be channelled somewhere and we want to help plug that gap. “We intend to place songwriting at the forefront of everything. We want to create a songwriting academy, where writers can work together to write for others as well as themselves.”
North East security firms and their apprentices are set to receive a boost as a security training facility opens its doors in Gateshead.
Dee, a professional musician and recording engineer by trade, believes the new label will boost the North East’s independent music scene. He continued: “We genuinely hope to create a community, where people feel ownership and their art is not treated as a product. “We feel our starting point is the legacy of past great independent labels like Factory or Stiff. We want to make music we want to listen to and believe others will as well.”

The security industry is experiencing growth and there is high demand for apprentices. Access Training more than doubled its number of apprentices in the last year.
he workshop, based at Access Training on the Team Valley, is the first of its kind in the North East and was designed and kitted out in partnership with a number of regional security firms. The facility will ensure hundreds of young people get the opportunity to learn security systems hands-on and will help to provide more high-quality security apprentices to firms across the region.
At the workshop, apprentices will learn the skills to design, install, commission and maintain electronic systems inside and outside premises to protect people and properties from risk and danger. This includes CCTV, intruder alarms, fire alarms and access control systems. The facility was officially opened on Monday March 26 by former Metropolitan

Police Commissioner Lord, John Stevens of Kirkwhelpington, who is also chair of Gateshead-based security firm, The Protector Group. Managing director of Access Training, Malcolm Armstrong said: “We have seen a steady rise in the demand for security apprentices over the last few years and it became clear that having a practical workshop would be advantageous to the companies we work with. “This new provision is going to improve the quality of the training we can offer the security industry. The technology involved in security systems advances at a pace and being able to provide practical training of these systems on site is essential. “We would like to thank all the companies who generously donated equipment for the centre.” www.bdaily.co.uk

Gateshead College named bestperforming college in the region Staff, students and partners at Gateshead College are celebrating after being recognised as the best-performing college in the North East for the fourth year running, as well as the second top in the country.
New figures from the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) show that Gateshead College achieved an overall student achievement rate of 93.9% in the academic year of 2016-17 – almost 10% higher than the national average and only 0.1% below the top-performing college in England.
more than 12% above the national average. The organisation delivers 1,900 apprenticeships designed to help students get a job and boost the skills base of firms across a wide range of industry sectors.
Gateshead College has been ranked in the top ten colleges in the country for several years, and has been the top performing college in the North East for the last four years.
Judith Doyle CBE, principal and chief executive of Gateshead College, said: “I’m so proud of this magnificent achievement, which reflects the diligence of our talented staff and the enthusiastic way they have bought into our clear strategic vision. The fact that we have made sustained progress over the last five years is the result of hard work, clarity of focus and an absolute determination to do the very best for every single one of our students.
In addition, in 2016-17 the college also achieved a particularly strong rating for apprenticeships, which was in the top 10% in the country and
“The difference this had made to the life chances of so many individuals, families and communities should not be underestimated.”
The published data shows the performance of 202 further education colleges in England, listing achievement rates based on the number of students staying on at college and successfully gaining qualifications
12 | www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk
The achievement builds on previous progress made by the college. Back in January, data published by the Department for Education confirmed that Gateshead College students achieve much higher grades than at other local colleges. The progress measures placed Gateshead College 1st in the country for the progress made by their 16-18 year old students completing tech level programmes and 4th for those completing applied general qualifications. Gateshead College was also ranked outstanding by Ofsted in 2015 - with only four other colleges achieving this recognition in the last three years.

RTS Solutions snapped up by Gateshead security developer Security and surveillance systems developer, Petards has acquired the entire issued share capital of RTS Solutions (Holdings) Limited as well as RTS Solutions (UK).
R
TS is a specialist transportation software engineering company which delivers web-based, realtime safety critical applications, whose main customers are currently Network Rail and its Tier 1 contractors. It supplies end-to-end integrated solutions that support the UK rail network infrastructure by maximising effectiveness for operational, engineering and maintenance programmes. RTS’s unaudited accounts for the year ended March 31, 2017 show that it
generated revenues of £778k and reported a profit before tax of £262k. Over 50 per cent of these revenues related to recurring software licences, maintenance and support contracts. Commenting on the acquisition, Raschid Abdullah, Petards’ chairman, said: “We are delighted to welcome RTS and its staff to the Petards Group and look forward to working with them to further develop and grow its business. “This acquisition marks a further step in the broadening of the group’s portfolio of products, providing the opportunity
to expand its earnings and enhance shareholder value.” RTS will operate as an independent company within the (Gatesheadbased) Petards Group from its offices at Holbeck Rail Depot in Leeds. All staff will be retained within the business as part of the acquisition. The directors believe that the acquisition will strengthen the group’s software solutions offering and that it will provide the group with an entry into the UK rail infrastructure market. www.bdaily.co.uk

£3 million to support creative projects A new £3 million fund to support creative and cultural organisations across the Northern Powerhouse has been announced by the Prime Minister. The funding, which follows an Industrial Strategy sector deal for the creative industries earlier this year, will mean arts projects and enterprises which support their local communities, in areas including Cumbria, Manchester, Lancashire, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Yorkshire, can apply for £150,000 of government funding. This could include projects using theatre to improve child literacy or art workshops for disabled people or the elderly. The Prime Minister made the announcement at No 10 where she welcomed publishers, artists, actors, directors of art galleries and theatres and craftspeople to celebrate the contribution of creative industries to all parts of the UK. To showcase the sector’s success, companies including Warner Bros, bespoke shoe makers Carréducker, furniture designers Angus Ross, denim manufacturer Hiut Denim and Mourne Textiles exhibited their products in Downing Street. Speaking to the audience at the reception, which included guests from Universal Music, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery, Pinewood Studios and the National Theatre, the Prime Minister praised the creative industries which contribute £92 billion to the UK economy, providing work for more than two million people right across the country. Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Our creative industries are at the heart of what makes Britain great, from the big screen to the local gallery. Our films captivate audiences the world over, our fashion designers surprise and delight, our architects are shaping skylines and cityscapes on every continent. In publishing, in music, in advertising and more, every day our creative industries fly the flag for Britain on the global stage.”
Government calls on technology firms to help tackle the UK’s biggest challenges The Government is launching competitions for tech firms to develop solutions to tackle the major social challenges of our modern age. The Minister for Implementation, Oliver Dowden, will announce the first round of competitions for tech specialists to tackle social challenges at the government’s flagship digital conference, Sprint 18. The competitions will be delivered using the £20m GovTech fund launched by the Prime Minister in November 2017. Contributing to each of the government’s Grand Challenges - the data economy; clean growth; healthy ageing and the future of mobility - the competition is designed to incentivise Britain’s tech firms to come up with innovative solutions to improve public services. The Government Digital Service is challenging tech experts to find solutions for specific issues including tackling loneliness and how to reduce plastic waste. The first of these competitions opened on Monday 14 May and is running for six

weeks, with the remaining competitions being launched in subsequent months. Tech firms bidding to the fund will have free rein to create truly innovative fixes. Winning companies will be awarded up to £50,000 to develop their ideas. The companies providing the best potential solutions will then be awarded research and development contracts of up to £500,000 to build prototypes. These solutions will then be available to the public sector to purchase. Minister for Implementation, Oliver Dowden, in the Cabinet Office said: “Our modern Industrial Strategy will cement Britain’s position as a worldleader in digital innovation and this Government is committed to providing more opportunities for tech businesses - including small firms - to access public procurement contracts. The GovTech fund encourages firms to find innovative ways to fix the big social problems we all face - loneliness, plastic pollution and national security. “Through emerging technologies, this fund will elevate British companies onto a global market while helping to deliver outstanding public services and improving lives for people”.

PLANS REVEALED TO BUILD EUROPE’S TALLEST OBSERVATION WHEEL ON NEWCASTLE QUAYSIDE AND CREATE 550 JOBS WITH £100m INVESTMENT Standing 140 metres high, the observation wheel - dubbed ‘The Whey Aye’ in celebration of its location – will be five metres taller than the London Eye. The wheel will also have a world-record breaking 10,000 sq m LED digital screen as its centre piece, which will be used to communicate information about local culture and events as well as social media content and advertising.
Developers have announced plans to build Europe’s tallest observation wheel on Newcastle Quayside in a project that would see more than £100m invested in the city and up to 550 jobs created.
Such is the nature and scale of the project, it is has already gained endorsements from Newcastle and England football legend, Alan Shearer, and prominent North East businessman and co-founder of accountancy software company The Sage Group, Graham Wylie. It is proposed that the wheel is built at the east end of the Quayside on the location of the former Spillers’ Flour Mill, which was demolished in 2011 and has lain vacant since. The plans include a pedestrianised experience featuring premium bars and restaurants and a world-leading 9,000 sq m visitor attraction called the Giants of the North Experience. Featuring cuttingedge virtual mixed reality and interactive technology, the attraction will hail the achievements of the region’s famous creative and sporting individuals, and the collective giants of North East industry including ship builders and the mining community. Along with the Giants of the North Experience, the plans will deliver a family entertainment centre and a multi-purpose play and sports complex, with covered
five-a-side pitches and tennis courts, as well as a state-of-the-art virtual golf club. The plans were announced by the World Wheel Company which has built and operated giant observation wheels and family entertainment centres around the world. These include 120 metre and 90 metre wheels in Suzhou, China, and Tbilisi, Georgia, respectively, and more than 20 family entertainment centres across the globe. With its head office in Hong Kong, China, World Wheel Company has established a base in Newcastle on Leazes Park Road, from where the design, construction and operation of the new developments on the Quayside will be managed. A detailed planning application relating to the wheel and visitor attractions is due to be submitted to Newcastle City Council later this year by World Wheel Company. Commenting on the plans, Alan Shearer said: “I think it would be great news for Newcastle. It’s just what the city needs. A new iconic attraction that celebrates
our rich history and culture, while creating jobs and income for the people. A development like this would have my full support.” Graham Wylie said: “‘Should this new development get planning approval, it will deliver a new iconic landmark for the City and any project that delivers real job opportunities of this scale, regenerates a disused part of the Quayside and generates income to the city has to be a good idea. This is potentially great news for Newcastle.” According to the World Wheel Company, the wheel will offer 30-minute ‘flights’ and there are plans to accommodate more than 800,000 visitors in its first year. The entire development will only take 18 to 24 months to build, once planning has been formally approved. Commenting on the proposals, Phil Lynagh, chief executive officer of World Wheel Company’s Newcastle operation, said: “This is without doubt one of the most exciting investment and regeneration projects in the UK, if not the world.”

MAKING YOUR BUSINESS READY FOR INVESTMENT FROM NEW £120M NORTH EAST FUND By Michael Cantwell, head of Corporate Finance at RMT Accountants & Business Advisors With the recent launch of the longawaited £120m North East Fund, and announcements being made on the fund managers who have been given responsibility for investing its different constituent parts, the race is on for businesses across the region to be among the first to access investment capital from it. The Funds have been designed to support over 600 North East businesses and create around 3,500 jobs across the region, with each of the funds of which it is comprised focussing on a specific part of the business community, from seed capital and early stage businesses through to wellestablished firms that want to take their operations to the next level. Each fund manager is going to want to make a fast start on building their new portfolio of investee firms, and it’s reasonable to expect that they’re going to get a lot of enquiries and business plans to choose from over the next few months. So if you’re thinking about being one of these applicants, what do you need to
do to stand out from the crowd, to make yourself and your business as attractive an investment proposition as possible and to ensure you’re fully ‘investment ready’ when the fund manager comes calling? The calibre of the people within your business should be the first thing you look at, which means both the management team that will be driving the implementation of the business plan in which you’re looking for an investment, and the workforce that will deliver it on a day-to-day basis. You and your management team’s track record will also play a big part in weighing up the likelihood of success. Can you show that your people and/or business have achieved their commercial objectives in the past, that this experience is going to be used to make similar success more likely in your next venture and that you’re in the right shape to make this happen? Do they have the collective credibility, knowledge, skills and determination to turn what’s on paper into something more tangible? How will they do this, how will venture capital involvement make success more likely, what new tools or ideas do you think you need, and are there any gaps in your team that you should be looking to fill? The strength and extent of the competition you’re facing also makes a
big difference, especially if you’re going up against a well-established or highlyregarded rival - how you are going to compete successfully against them, and what makes you stand out from their other potential rivals? Having a credible narrative business plan in place should go without saying, and should present a clear growth strategy which defines the market opportunity, identifies how your product and/or service will address it, and offers realistic costs for delivering the plan you’re promising. It’s essential that you have robust financial plans and forecasts in place which dovetail with the way forward that you’re laying out. As any of the entrepreneurs on Dragons’ Den would tell you, if the numbers don’t stack up, they’re not going to be interested in the story, however good it is, and it’s an area where we spend a lot of time working with clients to draw out all the detail that’s required. Our experience of helping dozens of North East firms attract investment capital tells us that the more detailed planning, preparation and research you do, and the more expert support you have in developing, refining and delivering your investment case, the more likely you are to succeed. With a fresh tranche of investment capital now available to the North East business community, and a real willingness to see it begin to reach its constituent companies sooner rather than later, there’s a real opportunity for ambitious firms to be getting on with bringing in the capital they need to grow, develop and create jobs in the years to come. RMT provides the full range of financial and business advisory services through its accountancy, corporate finance, specialist tax, healthcare, information technology and recovery & insolvency teams, and works with firms of all sizes both within and outside the North East.
