One for the kids: Garden Bingo
IN THE GARDEN
Nesting season is under way
Adult birds are getting more daring in their quest for insects, grubs and berries to feed their fledglings. Red-fruited pyracanthas, if not stripped of berries already, are particularly popular with blackbirds, while the white berries of the snowberry often attract robins and finches. As well as providing food, thick and thorny shrubs like these shelter young birds from predators. Its a good idea to keep feeders well stocked for seed eaters such as finches and other farmland birds which sometimes venture into gardens at this time of year in search of extra food. You may be tempted to get out and start tidying up after the winter. However, if you can leave some areas undisturbed, it helps wildlife. Birds may be nesting in hedges and shrubs, so it would be good now to wait until after the nesting season to trim them.
If you leave the foliage on daffodils and tulips for a couple of months after flowering to die back, rather than cutting them back, nutrients can be fed back into the bulbs. When the leaves fade, you can tidy them up by gathering them into a knot. Regular dead-heading also helps keep nutrients in the bulb. Spring-flowering plants bring valuable early nectar for insects. Ornamental cherry trees, yellow forsythia and red flowering currant will already be a blaze of colour in the south, although still dormant in colder areas. Some of our native plants, such as blackthorn and wild cherry start flowering this month.
Nature becomes more active at Spring. Keep a close eye out in your garden and tick off any of the following that you see, try and complete the list:
BLACKBIRD
CHAFFINCH
BUMBLEBEE
FROG
HEDGEHOG
DAFFODIL
SQUIRREL
PIGEON
For colder or shady areas, a more suitable hardy early-flowering evergreen is Mahonia aquifolium, which produces blue-black berries in the summer.

Plant evergreen hedges (holly, yew etc). Sow hardy annuals. Finish planting shrubs, trees and hedges, watering them in well. Prune roses. You can shorten them by at least a half, cutting back just above an outward-facing bud. Feed and mulch beds and borders. Plant herbaceous plants. Plant summer bulbs. Sow tender vegetables such as tomatoes and runner beans on a window ledge indoors. In warmer areas, start growing vegetables outdoors from seed. Mow the lawn on a high cut.

Salmon and Dil Fishcakes with Roasted Asparagus
A delectable spring treat of tender asparagus and soft, flavoursome fish cakes with a crispy coating. This makes an excellent light lunch or dinner and is quick enough for midweek cooking. You could also make a cheaper version of this with good quality tinned salmon. This goes well with mayonnaise or hollandaise sauce. salmon on, skin side down if there is any. INGREDIENTS 3 salmon fillets, about 350-400g 500g potatoes, peeled & diced 3 tbsp fresh dill leaves (or parsley, tarragon, or a mixture), chopped Zest of ½ lemon, finely grated 1 tbsp plain flour, plus more for dusting 2 eggs, beaten 150g dried breadcrumbs 400g asparagus, trimmed of their woody ends Oil for frying, e.g. sunflower or light olive Mayonnaise, to serve
Serves: 4 Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to the boil and cook until tender, about 1215 minutes. Drain, leave to dry out for a few minutes, then mash and leave to cool. While the potatoes are cooking, line your grill tray with a piece of foil and oil it lightly. Put the
Leave the salmon to cool, then flake, discarding any bones and skin. Gently mix the flakes in a bowl with the mash, lemon zest, herbs and 1 tablespooon of flour. Mix in 1 beaten egg. Divide into 8 evenly sized balls, mould into fishcake shapes, dust in a little flour, then chill for 30 minutes (on a non-stick tray or on greaseproof paper). Put the other egg and the breadcrumbs in separate flat dishes. Turn the fishcakes in the egg, then the breadcrumbs to coat. Put the asparagus in a small baking dish. Toss in a little oil, season with salt and pepper and roast for 10-15 minutes, depending on thickness. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large frying pan and fry the fishcakes in for 3-4 minutes on each side on a medium heat, until golden, in batches if needs be. Alternatively you could bake them for about 20 minutes until golden. Serve with a dollop of mayonnaise.

The 2016 Masters Tournament will be the 80th edition of the Masters Tournament and the first of golf’s four major championships to be held in 2016. The tournament will be held from April 7-10 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia (above). The Masters has the smallest field of the four major championships. Officially, the Masters remains an invitation event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field. Each player is classified according to the first category by which he qualified, with other categories in which he qualified shown in parentheses.

Betfred Snooker World Championship The World Championship, sponsored by Betfred until 2017, is snooker’s most important event, and one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. For 17 days each Spring, the very best on the planet go through a test of endurance, skill and mental toughness with an ultimate goal: to lift snooker’s most famous and coveted trophy. The tournament has been running since 1927 and is steeped in history, from the days of Joe Davis, through the 1980s when snooker became the biggest sport in Britain, to the modern era when greats such as Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry have graced the green baize. Since 1977, the tournament has been staged at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, and the event is watched by nearly 400 million people worldwide. It is sport at its finest. www.worldsnooker.com
