OUT AND ABOUT
IN THE GARDEN
Almost Spring If you regularly go out into the garden at daybreak, you will notice the birdsong increasing as the days get longer. Male birds are starting to mark out their territories ready for mating and the nesting season. Natural food supplies may be in short supply, especially when deep frosts persist. Lengthening days also tempt keen gardeners back out again. In all areas, there is still time to plant trees, hedges and shrubs before they resume growing in the spring. You can also plant bare rooted fruit trees and soft fruits. If it is too wet and cold for gardening, sit back and use the time to plan for the coming year. Why not look at other gardens in your area to see what grows well and looks good at this time of year? If you have a well-established flower border and want to increase the amount of flowers at no cost, you can divide perennials such as hardy geraniums and asters. These will have formed new growth under last year’s leaves. If you dig these up carefully and split them in two, you can then replant both. They’ll do best if you add a little compost to the ground first. You may notice very early bulbs will now be through, including snowdrops, crocuses and, in the south, daffodils.

SPORTS GUIDE: FEBRUARY 2017
FIS Alpine World Ski Championships St. Moritz 2017 THE 2017 SIX NATIONS WILL CHAMPIONSHIP, S RIE SE TH 18 E BE TH NS OF THE SIX NATIO CHAMPIONSHIP.
©Marco Iacobucci EPP
2017 SIX NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP The annual international rugby union competition returns this month. The current champions are England, having won the 2016 tournament. For the first time, the 2017 tournament will use the bonus point system common to most other professional rugby union tournaments. As well as the standard four points for a win or two for a draw, a team scoring four or more tries during a match will receive an
additional league table point, as will a team losing by 7 or fewer points. Additionally, to ensure that a team winning all of its five matches (a Grand Slam) will also win the Championship, three bonus points will be awarded for this achievement. England hold the record for outright wins of the Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations tournaments, with 27 titles, although Wales follow closely with 26 outright wins with the addition of 12 shared victories to England’s 10.
SUPER BOWL LI The 51st Super Bowl will take place at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The American Football Conference (AFC) champion will play the National Football Conference (NFC) champion to decide the league champion for the 2016 season. Last year, AFC champions Denver Broncos defeated NFC champions Carolina Panthers 24 -10 to win their third Super Bowl title.
18
A total of 600 athletes from approx 70 countries will compete for medals and the title of World Champion in the six disciplines Downhill, Giant Slalom, Super-G, Slalom, Super Combination and in the Team Event. All competitions take place on the St. Moritz home mountain Corviglia. The legendary “free fall” start of the men’s downhill is the absolute highlight: the athletes enter the course directly on a gradient of 100 percent or 45 degrees, accelerating to 140 km/h in 6 seconds. Inspired by the “free fall” and starting from their position, “Britannia”. The Alpine World Ski Championships are the most important championships in alpine ski racing and are held every two years.
“Fast, thrilling and legendary but also authentic, atmospheric and innovative.” www.stmoritz2017.ch

RECIPE
Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes
Keralan Cabbage Thoran INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp sunflower or 3 tbsp coconut oil or vegetable oil 2 tsp black mustard seeds 10 fresh curry leaves, roughly chopped (optional) 1 tsp cumin seeds 2 dried red chillies, each broken into several pieces 30g (or 4cm piece) fresh ginger, peeled and very finely grated 2 fresh green bird’s-eye chillies, sliced into very thin rounds, with seeds ½ tsp ground turmeric Good pinch of salt ½ tsp coarsely ground black pepper 250g hispi or pointed spring cabbage (or spring greens), shredded into 5mm pieces 2 carrots, peeled and cut into fine matchsticks or coarsely grated 100g fresh grated coconut, or 2 tbsp desiccated coconut (optional) Handful of fresh coriander Leaves, finely chopped Juice of ½ lemon (optional)
This is a dry cabbage stir-fry that is delicious eaten with just a poppadum or two. Cabbage pairs brilliantly with chilli, mustard seeds and ginger and this dish is one of many regional Indian variations on the theme. Don’t worry if you don’t have the curry leaves or coconut – the recipe will work well without them.
Serves: 2 Heat the oil in a heavy-based saucepan or wok over a medium heat, and, when hot, add the mustard seeds followed by the curry leaves (if using), cumin seeds and dried chillies. Stir for about 30 seconds, then add the ginger, fresh chilli, turmeric, salt and pepper and fry for another 30 seconds. Watch out – the mustard seeds will pop and spit. Stir in the cabbage and carrots and cook, covered, over a medium heat for 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender, adding a splash of water if they start to stick to the pan. Scatter over the coconut, if using, and coriander and sprinkle with the lemon juice (if using) then serve.
Variations You don’t have to stick to cabbage – this will make a light, healthy dinner with any of your veg box greens – spinach, chard, kale or even shredded Brussels sprouts.
