GARDENING TIPS APRIL 2015
SUNSHINE AND SHOWERS
SPRING IS FINALLY IN EVIDENCE AS DAFFODILS AND FLOWERING TREES START TO BLOOM. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts. Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or modules to provide colour in the garden. Annual grasses can be fun to try too: Briza maxima, Lagurus ovatus and Hordeum jubatum are suitable examples. In mild areas with light soil, you can sow directly outside. Marking out irregularly shaped seedbeds and broadcasting ‘drifts’ of different seed gives a more natural look.
Structure care Use a stiff-bristled brush or pressure washer to remove algae from paths. Pressure washers can
TOP 10 JOBS THIS MONTH
be rented if necessary. Remove dirt and algae from walls, paving and patios too - it’s easier at this time of year before too much has grown. Check and repair pergolas, arbours and arches if needed. In dry spells, you can treat timber structures with wood preservative and stain. Only do this in a well-ventilated space, to reduce the risks to your lungs and eyes. Make sure you use appropriate products. Creosote, for example, is no longer legal.
1
Keep weeds under control
Install decking or other seating areas for summer use.
2
Protect fruit blossom from late frosts
Go through your shed and remove any old, out-of-date garden chemicals. If in doubt of how to dispose of them, your local authority tip should be able to help.
3
Tie in climbing and rambling roses
4
Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds
5
Start to feed citrus plants
6
Increase the water given to houseplants
7
Feed hungry shrubs and roses
8
Sow new lawns or repair bare patches
9
Prune fig trees
10
Divide bamboos and waterlilies
SOWING AND PLANTING
Information and guidance provided by www.rhs.org.uk and www.rspb.org.uk
8
Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. Plant out autumn -sown sweet peas that have been raised in pots, and prepare your wigwam supports for them to climb, using a light twine to tie the plants in.

HEALTH AND FITNESS
DIET PROBLEMS
For more than 20 years the media has bombarded us with a perpetual diet craze. An avalanche of fad diets are announced one after another as breaking news while producing zero true results. Sure, you may lose 5, 10 or even 20 pounds on a fad diet...but you’ll gain it all back and then some. How can I be so confident that your results will be short lived? It’s actually a simple concept, and once you understand it you will be forever saved from the tortures of yo-yo dieting. Fad diets saddle you with unreasonable calorie restrictions and some even cut out entire food groups just to produce that short lived drop in weight-a process that is actually harmful to your health. The fad diets also ignore one major component to shaping up: Exercise You see, most fad diets operate on one age old premise: cut calories, cut calories, cut calories. By restricting the type and amount of food consumed the fad dieter usually sees an immediate drop in weight. If only it stopped there... But it doesn’t stop there. Life continues, and the fad dieter returns to their pre-diet eating habits- with one major difference in their body due to the sudden drop in pounds. Their calorie requirements have gotten smaller.
I know this is starting to sound like some heavy stuff, but hear me out. Changing your lifestyle from one that is unhealthy to one that is healthy will be the best thing that you ever do for yourself. Trust me, I help people like you make this change every day with amazing results.
Fact: The shape of your body is the direct result of your current lifestyle. So how do I change my lifestyle? That is a great question, and the answer is actually easier than you might think. Most people who are unhappy with their bodies are really only holding on to a few bad habits. Once these destructive habits are identified and then replaced with healthy habits their body naturally transforms from one that they loathe to one that they are proud of. In other words, to get the body that you want simply determine your unhealthy habits and replace them with healthy ones. Here are the most prevalent unhealthy habits:
In practical terms this means that the dieter will begin gaining weight even though they are eating their normal pre-diet portions. And since exercise hasn’t become a part of their routine, the unneeded calories will result in pounds gained. So what’s a dieter to do? Find a brand new diet to follow-right? Wrong.
The habit of inactivity. Failing to exercise on a consistent basis is one of the most destructive obstacles for your health and figure. (The key word here is consistent. If you aren’t exercising at least 3-4 times each week then you own this habit.)
There is a way to drop pounds and firm your body, but you won’t read about it in the next diet book or hear it on the news. The solution to your fad dieting nightmare is a lifestyle change.
The habit of overeating. Consuming calories in excess of your daily caloric needs is one of the main reasons that more adults are overweight today than ever before.
What is a lifestyle change? To change your lifestyle means to replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones, and to do so consistently. It isn’t something you do for a week or two, only to revert back your old ways - a lifestyle change redefines who you are.
The habit of empty calories. Filling your diet with foods that hold little to no nutritional value is a great way to expand your waist. (Hint: if a food item is made up of mainly sugar and/or fat consider it ‘empty’ calories.)

UNDER STARTER'S ORDERS
History has been written about the legendary runners and riders who have triumphed in the Grand National, each of them demonstrating that thrilling combination of human endeavour and equine fortitude. From the legendary triplewinning success of Red Rum, to our present day successors, there is always a story to be told. Once again the world will stop in its tracks, as 600 million people watch live on television. 40 horses and jockeys will line up to race across the famous fences including Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn, Valentine’s and The Chair. This month’s Grand National will be held on 11 April 2015. The most recent, in 2014, was won by Pineau de Re, ridden by jockey Leighton Aspell for trainer Richard Newland. In August 2013 Crabbie’s was announced as the new sponsor of the Grand National. The three-year deal between the alcoholic ginger beer producer and Aintree saw the race run for a record purse of £1 million in 2014.

DELIV AVAILAERY BLE
Linda, Dale Care Carer
Working with the elderly is more than just a job, we are making a difference to people’s lives. At Dale Care, we care for elderly people across the region in their own homes, allowing them to live independently. A career in care work can be as rewarding for you as it is for the people you are looking after. We are interested in finding the right people to work with us and chances are, if you care about other people, you already have the main skill we need.
