IN THE GARDEN
Secret Gardens, Hidden Histories
Thursday 8 - Sunday 11 September Green-fingered folk from community allotments to private gardens and civic parks across Newcastle are being encouraged to celebrate the Year of the English Garden as part of Heritage Open Days this September. The festival is joining in with the 300th anniversary of Newcastleborn, Capability Brown by showcasing some of the most stunning public and private gardens in England. There will also be free access to the gardens and houses at a selection of National Trust properties as well as lesser known private and public secret green spaces and community gardening projects with fascinating stories to tell. Registration for organisers closes on 1st August with hundreds of green spaces already listed including Dilston Physic Garden in Corbridge, St. Wilfrid’s Church and Kirkharle Courtyard in Newcastle. Loyd Grossman, Patron of Heritage Open Days, said: “Heritage Open Days is a great
opportunity to showcase the hidden histories behind the green spaces in your area. From formal, prize-winning horticultural landscaping, to allotments, pub gardens and community planting projects, every gardener has a story to tell!” Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery said: “This is the chance for proud gardeners to take part in Heritage Open Days and an opportunity for visitors to enjoy some of the secret gardens in their own communities.” Organisers will need to register their green space with Heritage Open Days by 1st August 2016. By registering, all participants will be able to apply for a free marketing support pack and their event will be listed at www.heritageopendays.org.uk from mid-July. For more information, visit the website or email info@heritageopendays.org.uk
Sultry late summer August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holidaytime, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summerflowering shrubs.

RECIPE

Lamb Stew with Baby Turnips
Lamb stew needn’t be a dark and heavy affair. Summer turnips have a sweet, almost radish-like taste, that’s lighter than their winter cousins. White wine instead of red and the addition of some vibrant green veg and herbs at the end also lighten things. Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS Olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 1 carrot, finely diced 2 celery sticks, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1kg lamb neck, cut into 3–4cm chunks 1 glass of dry white wine 1 bay leaf 500ml hot chicken stock 4 baby turnips, peeled 100g French beans, topped, tailed & thinly sliced 100g double-podded broad beans 2 tsp Dijon mustard (optional) 1 mint sprig, leaves only, chopped Small bunch of parsley, chopped ½ lemon Salt and pepper
Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy-bottomed Heat the oven to 170°C/Gas 3½. Heat a little olive oil in a large casserole pot and gently cook the onion, carrot, celery and garlic over a low heat until beginning to soften and take a little colour, about 15 minutes. Remove from the pan and set to one side. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Turn the heat up to medium, add some more oil to the pan and brown the lamb on all sides. When nicely golden, add the wine and scrape the base of the pan with a wooden spoon to deglaze. Cook until the wine is reduced by half. Return the veg to the pan, add the bay leaf and pour in the stock so that the lamb is just covered. Season with salt and pepper, cover the casserole and transfer to the oven for 30 minutes. Cut the turnips into thick wedges, add to the casserole and cook for a further hour, or until the lamb is tender. Add the French and broad beans to the pot and simmer on the stove for about 5 minutes to cook them. Just before serving, stir in the mustard, parsley and mint leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice.
